REVIEWS OF Riveredge Hospital IN Illinois

My husband has been a freque t patient over the years and everyone has always been great. I attend some groups therapy and psychiatrist and all are wonderful service. However there is a lady who works in intake now her name is Cheryl she has to be the rudest person. Who works there the way she treats people she. Calling is absolutely disaceful and truly unprofessional especially when your loved one going in inpatient for psych care. She made feel very uncomfortable and almost intimidated I can't imagine being a patient having her bring me in as I just would make me feel VERY uncomfortable 9r maybe even unsafe especially after being in an abusive psych hospital like. Hicago behavioral. She's very unprofessional and should be talked to and work on her patient relation skills and maybe some etiquette classes. But as I said I haven't met any bad employees everyone truly seems to care about there patients and get bring the family in as a support system and jeep the family updated and help with how yo handle certain situation they truly try and help these patients and that a great thing, there truly aren't many hospitals that are as great as this one.

Terrible experience. Made me regret ever, staying at that place. Staff members may be nice, but sometimes lose control of their own patients, several alerts such as what they called code green; for "patients fighting". Made me less comfortable to go to any hospital.

0 Stars. My daughter was at Riveredge for 5 days, We were not allowed to take her out until after the 5th day. There had been absolutely no communication from the doctors. I have called, left messages, had notes stuck to her chart. Not one of my phone calls have been returned. The family meeting that was required for discharge did not happen. A phone conference with a therapist and my daughter is all that occurred, and no doctor was present. My daughter was there for a reason, and her needs were not met. If anything, Riveredge made her condition worse.

I was an outpatient here for almost a year, I started outpatient therapy 10/6/15 due to self harm and anger issues. When I first got there I was an extremely rude and disrespectful adolescent but over time my outpatient sessions were very helpful and taught me methods on how to control myself. In August of 2016 I believe my therapist would no longer be working there because she was moving and she decided that I would be good with out our sessions anymore, which she was correct. Ever since then I have been a lot more respectful towards everyone. Riveredge’s outpatient program is amazing and I always recommend them to anyone that tells me they need professional help. A special thanks to Therese Hogg for being the best therapist there, sad she left though :(

my wife started on a Monday and I was supposed to leave on Friday afternoon, but not only did they call me to say that they had to stay for a week ... the decision was supposed to be mine, I did not sign anything on their own They want to earn more money, and by the way I have 2 children who are suffering because they can not see their mother

Very helpful. Had my husband in there. At first it was a nightmare trying to get some information over the phone. Nobody knew anything. But after driving 3 hours there, and talking in person, we finally got some information. Got to see my husband during off hours due to living so far away. But staff was helpful after talking to them in person. But if you want to stay updated about the person in there, you have to call and ask or go up there to find out. They wont call or if they do, its hours later. Husband said food is bland but if you add salt and pepper its decent. Overall it's a decent place. It has had a bad history but they are trying to fix it up.

Hospital was really dirty. They had housekeeping but it appeared that they never actually cleaned the units. Staff was horrible they treated me less than a human. Most of the staff didn’t want to be there and it was obvious they way the interacted with my family and I. The social worker was suppose to see twice a week she saw me like once. If I ever have to go back to a psychiatric hospital it won’t be here

My spouse stayed here for three weeks in 2014 for deep depression. He was released without improvement, unable to walk without falling, slurring like a stroke patient--and on a zombie cocktail of seven strong medications. Within two days an ER physician consulted a neurologist, who recommended discontinuing several medications. Within 24 hours of discontinuation, he could walk normally (no falling) and speak normally again. We had been advised to get a Parkinson's evaluation for him, but a number of the medications had side effects that mimicked Parkinson's, all of which disappeared when the toxic medications were discontinued. He was back in another hospital within a week since no improvement had occurred at Riveredge. Riveredge also lost all his clothing, for which they sent me a check for replacement value, and when presented with the facts of his care, never sent me a bill for his "care." I also complained to my insurance company, which should have asked for its money back. At least I tried to save them from wasting their money. My advice: AVOID THIS HOSPITAL!

I can honestly say this place saved my life. Granted it was scary at first I mean it's a mental hospital and it was kind of ghetto but that only made the day less boring. I personally loved the food here they made amazing corn bread and have something different everyday. The nurses for the most part were sweet as can be. I was admitted here twice and went to outpatient. It took me awhile but after going here a few times I went from a straight D student to honor roll. The doctors are not the best in my opinion for inpatient but they make up for it with group and such. Also the education curriculum was at a 6th grade lever but other than that I loved Riveredge and would suggest it in a heartbeat to anyone struggling.

I went their for a week and a half. They were very welcoming and respectful of my appearance when I got There. I was there for personal reasons and they helped me a lot with my mental health. Yes there was some violent teenagers but there wasn’t ever a time when they harmed me or any of the patients. The staffs were helpful and they talked to me when I needed the help. This hospital made me feel better emotionally and they helped my mom too. Thank u for saving my life !

They really are helping my Son.

First day I came I had no idea what was going and Jeremiah starts being rude to me like I did something wrong even though I was just asking if I could go to the bathroom. Some days he would act like he was your friend but the other day he would be disrespecting the kids there. I am glad he got moved from the teens sections. The last time I heard from him was when he was beating up a kid. This man shouldn't even be working there. The people in the morning were a lot nicer then the staff in the afternoon. There is literally no point of coming to this hospital. I would rather give this place a -5 star review for bad service. If you are coming here for help. Don't go, don't even think about it. If your doctor tells you to go to this place show them this review. It is literally a nightmare here. A never ending nightmare. I am serious. Just forget about it.

Julia Malik

I stayed here for a month. I can't believe someone would say that you get abused here. That's a lie ok? I was in the all girls unit for teens and nobody had terrible things happen to them by the staff.

Kayla C

Helped alot. Very pleased with this place and good to go to when help is needed.

Carrie Baron

As a visitor, I am appalled by the way this hospital handles altercations among patients. Violent patients that fight with other patients and guests should be removed from the hospital and put in jail. Other patients are not safe! Because they allow that behavior here.

Hhggf Hjgdruoytrd

Defend yourself. Adequately. But not past the point of no return.

Very little communication to parent, weeks before first family session with custodial parent, still haven't spoke to medical doctor caring for child, child that threatened to harm himself was, only hours later, allowed to have a pencil in his room at 2am, which he harmed himself with, parent not notified until following day. Very concerned that there's not enough supervision! Next night threatened to hurt himself again, so was dosed up with benadryl. Child's aggression and anxiety has extremely increased since being admitted.

I think the staff was wonderful. If I ever have to go back to this type of hospital it would be Riveredge

The food is inedible. Apart from a few staff members, the MHA’s, therapists, and doctors are mostly incompetent. My physical wellness doctor didn’t know what an IUD was. They very obviously don’t care about the patients. They are rude. They are cruel. Everything is chaotic. The group therapy sessions are repetitive and unhelpful. A lot of the groups were hijacked by the Christian patients and made all about a god that many of us didn’t believe in. I wasn’t allowed to have my books on Paganism, but one lady was allowed to scream bible verses and tell everyone they’re going to hell. They will treat you like you know nothing. And they’ll keep you longer if you have good insurance. Don’t go here.

This place was a God-send for myself and my daughter in our time of need. We came in clueless about the process and what our options were and were quickly advised of our options and given all that we needed to secure the help needed. Jaimee in Access was PHENOMENAL!!! We've visited other facilities and have never come across another employee so well-versed and knowledgeable or so KIND!!! I hope Riveredge Hospital realizes what a gem they have in Jaimee!!!

On August 26, 2017 my son was admitted to Riveredge Hospital after an episode at home that was very chaotic. He had arrived home from school that afternoon to find a surprise, he was going to have his favorite cheeseburgers for dinner and he was very happy. I had just picked them up a short time before he got home and told him to take them inside because it was too early to have dinner. Once inside he found his mother sitting at the kitchen table and told her that he wanted lottery tickets and when she said NO he went ballistic. He began hitting her, kicking her and then picked up a kitchen chair and hurled it at her. He was removed from the house at this time. Being that it was technically Saturday the 26th when he arrived (he arrived after midnight from Lutheran General Hospital) he wasn't really seen by staff until Monday the 27th. On Tuesday August 28th I was contacted during a staffing and informed that my son had been talking about hearing voices, voices which told him to do the things he did. I was advised that they believed my son was not making this up and that his story was genuine. At the end of this staffing we were told that they would have another one the following Tuesday, Sept. 5th. They told us that he would not be released until after that discussion. it was just 48 hours later when we received a call from the hospital that informed us our son was going to be released on Saturday Sept. 2, without this second staffing. It was now their opinion that after two days he was suddenly better. My wife and I have been pursuing funding for adult housing since October of 2016 with an agency called CAU. It is a very exhaustive process and we have been put through the ringer repeatedly while going through this process. This lousy hospital refused to keep our son until we could secure this funding and a group home could be found. We were threatened with being reported for neglect if we refused to pick him up. Against our wishes we had to give in as the stakes were too high for us but our son wasted no time in demonstrating that he had not improved. On the way home I was pounded on while driving. His behavior is exactly as they had been before. I was hit with a flashlight while lying in bed. This place is deplorable. We are not safe in our home. He is not safe because he can't make good decisions. He is a danger to himself as well as to us. All we desired was for him to be released to an appropriate level of care. Our boy is 5'10" tall and weighs nearly 250 pounds. He has become very difficult for his mid 50's parents to manage. Avoid this place if at all possible.

I’m writing about my experience at Riveredge. When I got to there and had Dr. Shah was my Dr. he was understanding and helped me out alott. He prescribed me medication that was working. Sadly after a few months he supposedly left and was given Christie Johnson APN. So Instead of continuing the medication he had me on, she lowered it and lowered it again I feel worse and I’m afraid to say something because all the stigma today. I know several people who left that office because she continues to cut their medication.

This place is a mockery of Mental healthcare!! not sure why the doors are still open! my daughter 17 yr/old was admitted for depression anxiety and thoughts of suicide which increased when she was trying to get help while in their care, she had altercations with other girls her same age while the staff attitude towards it was no big deal I'm sorry but that's unprofessional they're rude that place is a mockery of Health Care , did not help my daughter one bit, it actually added to the stress they do not do anything positive for mental health you send your children there they will have added levels of stress on top of having mental health issues to deal with.

Horrible Horrible place. My wife was transferred here from the hospital 1am. They said she had to sign opera to see therapist and will Be released. She was not in her right state. She signed and was not released until 7 days later after repeated requests to be released. There’s no rehab in there. It’s like a jail. Worse than jail. No Rec time was given until I went there and threatened to sue. Never go here. Stay far far away. It should be shut down or taken over my a proper administration..... State needs to go in there and talk to the patients. It’s a huge Insurance scam. Beds filled means payday to the hospital.

I was 14 here a few of years ago. Started going when I was 13 and didn't end til I was 15. Reggie is not a good man and I wish I could get in contact with the owner about him. Yeah I was a kid and naive, but as a 21 year old grown woman now, he is a very bad man. I may even consider contacting an authority figure because he should not be there and they need to monitor the camera's closely.

Ashley Aviles

Negligent doctor and staff. They don't care about the wellbeing of their patients and treat you like your an animal. I wouldn't even bring my dog to be seen here. The staff looks like they just rolled out of the ghetto. Please seek care elsewhere save yourself the misery. GRISEL JACKIE CHLOE AND CHRISTINE JOHNSON are all unprofessional and uneducated on the specialty they have chosen

Dustin Valentine

Extremly rude staff. I recently called to check to on my brother and was completely disregarded before she even knew who I was or why I was calling. I hope the management of this facility would start random call checks to experience for themselves the professionalism of their employees.

This is a terrible psychiatric hospital. The rooms/bathrooms are dirty, there's mold, the food is terrible, and the staff are mean and sometimes abusive toward patients. If you seek help, I would go anywhere but here.

It was brought to my attention that the nurses and staff members are constantly swearing at the children and around the children. Staff member allowed child to call friends instead of parents. No communication but once from doc and once from therapist. Nobody could explain discharge papers and kept pointing fingers as to which staff member is supposed to explain it to me. Improper and incomplete diagnoses... this place is a joke not a place for children to get help. Very dissapointed didnt help my child but tought her its ok to swear and lie to adults... thanks for not helping my child.

i went here i while i was 15 going on 16 and i was wanting attention from my parents and they use to make fun of thing that said or did at the the time. i am now 17 and i keep thinking back to how if i could of got more help from someone else or not running away i would of never been in the potion to being place there, i told them i had a baby and i was going to die and i was giving her up for adoption and her name was kamyama , but at the time i was pregnant none of it was true. they told me i was lying and kept me there for over 3 months.they are unprofessional, they mock they girls who go there, they do not help anyone and it just a poor social environment to help us young women and men with mental illness

One of their employees is known for identity theft and has stolen personal information while employed at Rush and now doing the same at this hospital apparently thorough background checks aren't required to work here or to be around people this person is also extremely hostile and very violent...

Marzena Stanik

Dear parents, if you have kids in this hospital, PLEASE discharge them. The kids who are there, don't deserve the horrible and abusive "treatment". Staff is constantly swearing and yelling at the children. They don't give kids any treatment, but make them feel even worse. I just pulled my daughter out of this hospital today. She was there for 3 days, and she didn't receive any treatment. I could probably give her better treatment. They are just playing games, and watching Disney channel. This place needs to be shut down RIGHT NOW. It is dangerous for anyone, and is completely unstable. I had a physician lie to me about the amount of time I talked to her, and how long she talked to my daughter. All of the staff is nasty, and the food is horrible. Do not send any children, teenagers, or adults here. They are shoving pills down their throats. There was one 12 year old girl that took 16 pills EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. They act as if medicine is the only solution for them.

T Mick

This place is horrible; they make their own rules, won't allow my kiddo to call me and when I call they don't answer the phone or they keep me on hold until it hangs up. They've misplaced my kiddo's clothes and homework and one had the nerve to have an attitude when I asked about it. There's one nurse there with a very bad attitude, like she doesn't want to be bothered; sorry b$@#%, but that's your job. We as parents have questions and you need to answer them, point blank and if you don't know find someone who does. The overall hospital is filthy, some kid was running through the hallway talking about killing himself while the staff did absolutely nothing. This place is disgusting and I didn't want to give it any stars but I had no choice.

J Mayfield

thanks for taking the time to write these reviews. you saved me a trip was going to take daughters there who have depression

September Kordelewski

this was not a good place to be. the only thing I truly remember was that one of the teachers said that we couldnt eat halloween candy or else there would be raxor blades to cut our mouths. they also called everyone stupid, including me. when I told my parents they confronted river edge and took me out permanently. TEACHERS HAVE NO PRUPOSE OF CALLING A KID STUPID! DAFAUQ?

Carrie Delzer

Over twenty years ago I was placed in riversedge by my parents. They had been advised by two of the doctors that admitting me would be the best way to avoid a police investigation of child abuse. Due to the fact I was hospitalized the police did not have access to me, and the case was dropped. I returned home where I was regularly beaten until my late teens. My psychiatric problems worsened until a caring doctor employed elsewhere explained that many of my problems where actually created by my three months in riversedge. I'm 39 and still suffering serious problems due to the trauma of my hospitalization. No 12 year old should experience the things I experienced. Children being beaten. Children being tied to beds for over 24 hours, no food, no bathroom, no human contact. What can a child do when five 200bl adults are beating another child into submission? If you truly care about a child, do not place them in this facility. As a minister I will continue daily prayers for the victims currently being treated at this horrible facility. These people are criminally dangerous.

Kymiyah Robinson

Laura Swiskoski

My brother was here for about 2 years, and when he got discharged successfully he went to a transitional place. They refused to let me see him at this hospital, and the "doctor" he had here is a complete joke. He is thriving in life, when they told him in this hospital he would never be able to succeed. They diagnose wrong, and put things in the boys head. I suggest they close it down, it's a waste of money, and the "doctor" should lose his lisence. Take your children elsewhere.

Alexandra Litwin

This was the worst experience I ever had. I get it it's mostly for mental issues but once the ambulance took me there from my house in november 2k18 I say I wouldn't recommend this for many reasons. First of all, bad service in there. Horrible food, they are super strict on showers for adolescent girls. They won't let me use the vending machine they only let it for workers, Dirty rooms, dirty beds, they barely let you do anything. I understand we can't have phones cause we are being admitted but it's so boring it's like theres nothing we can do for fun. We just sit there not being able to go outside staying in same place( And I had to stay 10 days there). But it's like they don't even understand situations that other people have and therapy is not helpful at all. Being an impatient in there was horrible and I'm trying not to be droven there again. It's like jail but still be able to walk around. And you say we can't make friends there? Why how is that a good restriction, I was trying to get their social media. Bad, bad and bad. I would say parents, take your kids if you want a break from them but it's not gonna change the persons behavior.

NIA-AMANI NICHOLS

I was placed in this hospital due to a suicide attempt,The staff were mean, they gave shots to knock us out every chance they got, i was forced to slap another patient by a staff, and I witnessed a child be told that they were psychotic and stupid everyday for 20 days straight, Parents I know you want to help your childeren but please dont send them here

When I tried to get into a outpatient program I got discriminated against because I had a service dog. They kept giving me the run around and lieing to me. First they kept saying we'll call you back and I'd have to call back since they never did. One time she said hold on and let me get your file. I was on hold for 20 minutes! And how could I have a file if I wasn't a client! After that hold she said she'd have to call back since her superviser was not there. When the lady finally called back she told me that there was conveniently a waiting list. Even though before that I had gotten interviewed for the program. My counselor called then after I told her that and another lady told her that there isn't a waiting list and wondered why I was told that. She said she'd check out what happened & call back of course they never did. So that was when we just said forget it and moved on. It's against the law to deny a person services because they have a service dog. I was surprised and disgusted by there treatment towards me.

To call this "hospital" disturbing would be an understatement. The staff is lackadaisical and have no control over the patients here. I've seen violent outbursts ranging from people starting fights in the "Day Room" to attacking kitchen staff bringing food to the floor during meal time. The "process groups" and other sessions they hold during the day involve a lot of yelling from staff members like Kenny. Contraband is widespread... if you'd like a prison style tattoo or grab some pills from someone who has smuggled some in their butt (I'm serious) you can definitely get them here. The doctors have no motivation other than to keep you here as long as possible. Dr. Goldberg is particularly notorious for trying to keep patients as long as possible. Your best bet to get out of this hell hole is to sign voluntarily (I know this seems counter-intuitive) and then force their hand to release you within 3 days. They'll tell you that they can petition the court to keep you 5, 10 or 15 days but that isn't true. They have to release you. Also, if you are admitted into this den of hell you should immediately tell them you have outside therapy and ask them to write down (again I'm dead serious) in your record that you aren't going to hurt yourself or others. Say these words: "Dr. XYZ, at this moment I want you to write in my record with your pen that I am not at risk to myself and I do not want to harm any other individuals." Other hospitals all across the Chicagoland region use RiverEdge as a dumping ground for patients they don't know what to do with, especially those without the right insurance. So if you find yourself here I am sorry. Just try and do your best to get out of this land of madness and fraud as fast as possible.

It's always refreshing to come in contact with positive and professional staff. Many people write in on the negative experience and not enough on the positive. Ms.Jaime in Access keep up the great work.

The food was great. I liked the cheese fries. Whole experience was kinda eh. They woke me up late for the psychiatrist. Overall 3/5

It's unfortunate that there are so many negative reviews about this facility! I wish that every patient/family members would have had the experience we have had here at Riveredge!! Within 9 months my son had been admitted on 7 different occasions to 4 different facilities. Since my son had recently turned 18 he was legally able to sign the 5 day release. It's unfortunate that the doctors at these other facilities didn't take his mental state into account before just releasing him just because he signed the 5 day! I am in the medical field myself and understand the laws in Illinois that protect patients from being held against their will. But with that I also know that if a patient is a danger to himself and is not stable enough to be released it doesn't matter if they signed the 5 day or not. Their mental state, safety, and wellbeing come first! Obviously the true issues were never addressed since he would continue to return to the ER within weeks of being released. At every facility he had gone to they would medicate him and then release him. Even tho the problem was still very obvious and he continued to be a danger to himself!! At the last ER visit the therapist there finally listened to all of our concerns and asked us where we would like for her to try first to get him transferred to. After negative experiences at 3 different facilities we asked her what she would suggest. At that time she named a couple of facilities in the area and then added that the only place she wouldn't suggest sending him to is Riveredge. So when she came back almost 2 hours later and told us the only place that had a bed available for him was Riveredge I was extremely disappointed and feared it would just be one more wasted stay where my son would not get the help he so badly needed!! SHAME on her for speaking on behalf of a hospital she obviously knew nothing about!! SHAME on her for being one of the "professionals" who has contributed to giving this facility a bad rep!! I understand that this is a mental health hospital! Along with that comes patients that don't want to be there, don't feel they need to be there, and unfortunately can only see the negative! So I can understand the negative reviews from patients. I guess I could understand negative reviews from their family members as well since this is definitely a very stressful situation to be in. With that I wonder if these people have experienced any other mental health hospitals in the area. Because Riveredge has by far been the best hospital my son has been admitted to!! He was first admitted to their ITU unit and then was transferred to 2 North before transferring to their brand new residential unit. Whether it's calling to speak with my son, or the staff, or going there in person to visit him every single person I have come into contact with has been amazing, caring, friendly, and extremely helpful!! The ladies at the front desk are always extremely friendly! The nurses on every unit he has been on have been wonderful! Barbara...his therapist has gone above and beyond to ensure my son is getting the care he needs and always takes time out of her extremely busy schedule to call and update us every step of the way! Dana....the coordinator of their new residential program has also been extremely helpful in his transition to that unit!! This was the FIRST and ONLY hospital where he has received the help he needed!! Of course when he was admitted the first thing he did was sign the 5 day. BUT the doctors recognized that he was still a danger to himself and was not safe enough to be released! They were actually able to get him to see that he needed help and he ended up withdrawing the 5 day. He has been there for a little over a month now and only has a couple weeks left before completing their residential program. I can not thank the staff at Riveredge enough for EVERYTHING they have done for my son! You have all literally played a part in giving me my son back and I will forever be grateful! Thank you!
