All I can say is this place is so much better than St. Luke's. There was only 2 people at Aurora who were rude (staff) but most of them were... nice and polite

Cassandra Reeves

The front desk and management suck! Make sure you have your pin code!! I twisted two numbers and although I am the patients power of attorney and emergency contact I still had to fight for 7 hrs to see my "patient" leaving me only 10min to visit after all that!!

Emily O'Neill

If I could give zero stars I would. This place is like a prison. I just got laughed at because my relative is being "put under another patient's wing" to be forced to exercise and read after he's only been there one day! When I complained both Roger and the nurse Vicky laughed at me. I was given a special provision to visit because of the long distance I have to drive and was treated poorly by Donna the House Supervisor. I needed to use the restroom and went to ask her a question and she said, and I quote, "Hurry up, you said you needed to pee so go I have things to do." I told her to treat us like human beings and she said, "We have 75 human beings here and if we break the rules for you, we have to do it for everyone." Apparently, there is no communication between fellow co-workers. They don't even know who certain employees are and when I explained who they were, I was brushed off and insulted. I can't wait to get my relative out of here! Banner Good Samaritan is so much more nicer as far as staff goes. You might have a beautiful looking facility, but the treatment of the family is just wrong. DON'T GO HERE!

It's been seven years since I was here as a teenager, and yet the traumatic experience still haunts me even as a mental professional today. Mother and I were having family issues, and I was very adamant about being away from her for a little while. I was told by my therapist there, that my stay at Aurora would last the weekend, but I was kept for over a week. The psychologist was an old, incompetent German fart who should have been out of practice in the 50s. Would see me every other three days to ask me one question: how do you feel? After this, he would send me away. From the interaction, he diagnosed me with PTSD, MDD, and bipolar. When I asked him about the diagnosis, he responded, "Well, it looks that way to me". One night, I remember waking up to the nurses circling me around my bedside, imploring me to take a cocktail of meds. I remember being placed into the restraining room and made to wait for hours because I refused the depakote and lexapro they tried to put me on (never been on meds; was very confused as imo, I was fine?). After a few days, the sheer stress that I gone through had significantly decreased my appetite. When I started not eating as much, the nurses and coordinator of the unit threatened to place me on a tube. I called the coordinator ignorant; the abuse, mistreatment, and unprofessionalism had reached its peak. Sitting patients in front of a tv screen all day and forcing them to attend vapid groups is not client care. Those on the unit also weren't allowed outside. One girl was prone to panic attacks induced by unit staff, I tried to soothe her by holding their hand. Staff deemed this inappropriate touching, becoming aggressive and splitting us apart. Black female coordinator screamed at me for calling her ignorant and ordered that I write her an apology or they would keep me longer. I also had a book taken from me by this boorish red-headed pig of a woman. Just plucked my coping strategy from my bedside and confiscated it because it would be "too scary" in the hands of other clients. Male nurse staff also had made sexually charged comments at me in my time, esp when my mother had come to drop off a pair of panties. And it didn't stop there. They sent a woman to my house weeks after to "check in" on me. She had no business there, and tried to persuade my mother into having me readmitted for extensive psychological evaluation. She dialed the police on me for walking out of the house at one point. Police came to apprehend me, handcuffed and dragged me into their squad vehicle though I wasn't doing anything criminal. I was returned home by the police to Linda still talking to my mother. My mother ordered her to leave, but she refused. Went out to her truck in the driveway to chainsmoke. I called the police this time, and they escorted her off the property. Linda's pride was so hurt, she wanted to pursue legal action against me. It was a mess. So, needless to say, heed the horror stories by others. This place ought to be closed indefinitely. They do not care about their clients and engage in very unethical and ILLEGAL practices; it is about control, power, and money. I practice as a therapist in California now, and Arizona's behavioral health regulations pale in comparison (to put it lightly). But thank you for helping me realize the dire need for change in how we approach mental health, Aurora. Caution to those reading this review: Please do not send your loved ones here; the majority leave more damaged then when they came.

This place is for drug addicts. Also I wasn't given the lowest dose of medication. They hand out meds like it is candy. Most of the counseling is for drug or heroin addicts. The food is average.

Wanda is a vile, disgraceful employee. She should never be allowed phone privledges. She speaks to parents like they are beneath her, I can’t imagine how she speaks to her patients. I asked her her name and position she said Wanda. I told her I would need her last name and her supervisors name. She said no. I’m not giving you that!! So I said wow, you know I am going to complain about your behavior so you’re trying to what,... hide your way out of it. DISGUSTING. If this place hires this type of staff,... if this is how they allow their staff to represent their location. Their horribly low reviews are well deserved . I would never recommend this location to anyone for any reason. County hospital staff has more respect for their patience.

I heard really bad things about this place but it was the closest facility and I had no other choice really. I made it clear I had heard bad rumors and didn't want to be treated there, and the nurses and techs were extremely nice to me the first few days. It was different from what I expected and felt like I was being treated like a child, walking in a line to art class and to meals. When one of the other patients was having an episode they seemed more annoyed than they wanted to help and it made me very uncomfortable and anxious. The psychiatrist himself was very kind and listened to what I had to say, so that was good at least. The facility itself was a little dingy, there were scrapes and missing paint on the walls, the beds were very very small and the towels and bedding were clearly old and well used. I thought the treatment would be much more personal but it was more treating everyone at once through group thereapy. The group leaders were random nurses or techs and they had no idea what they were doing most of the time. There was an overall topic for the groups but none of them really seemed helpful at all. The worst experience I had by far was on my last day of treatment. My discharge paperwork was done but then a nurse discovered half of my admission paperwork was filed incorrectly and the staff had recorded false information about my symptoms and medical history. I began to have some kind of reaction to one of the medications and the team didn't seem to care. I thought it was anaphylaxis but I guess it was some type of dystonic reaction, either way I couldn't speak or breathe right. They gave me medication and told me told calm down and not talk, but then continued to ask me questions. I got frustrated and had an axiery attack because the meds weren't working, that's when a nurse got in my face and threatened me. He told me I was over reacting and being dramatic for crying while I couldn't breathe right. He told me if I continued to cry he'd keep me for several more days for being "unstable and over dramatic". I left there in tears with my reaction still happening and had to go to the ER to get proper treatment. I would not recommend this place to anyone if you need one on one care, find a good outpatient clinic for sure. If you're in dire need of care immediately you're better off going to the ER and having them refer to somewhere better. Overall the structure was basic, the treatment plans were unspecific, and the staff seemed fed up with patients and showed no concern in an actual crisis moment. Don't go here. Don't send anyone here.

Some of the most unprofessional people I have ever met work here. The only reason I got anything out of this place was because of the other patients here. I had to be taken out by my father forcefully as they were lying to my parents about how I was doing and the doctor even lied about seeing me and recommended I stay another weekend when he hadnt seen me since the first time, 7 days prior. Too much to explain but from the beginning to the end I had bad experiences with almost all of the employees. They treated us as if we were in there for doing something bad and not people who were desperate for help.

As a RN, I loved working at Aurora. I love the/my patient's and you will always have management. Just do what you're supposed to and it's great!! Above, This was my initial Review. Since this review, i have experienced management first hand. In retrospect, I should not have been so gracious. It was not this location where the horific injustice occured.

Firstly, I feel like we were bullied into going to Aurora. I feel like they have taken advantage of the emotional roller coaster that I still feel that I am on. My son who was taken there after a suicide attempt (nearly successful). I have contacted the BBB about business practices because I feel that Aurora takes advantage of parents in my position. I realize that the office staff and they intake coordinator have a job to do, but they have such a bad attitude. While I appreciate that they are "watching" our son so he can't commit suicide again. I am researching other treatment options. I only hope that my son is having a better experience as a inpatient than his family is.

My adolescent family member got brought here for evaluation. They kept over night. That is over a month now. We are not able to release her and take her home. They turned her into a "ward of the state". She comes from a loving home but its now a prisoner at Aurora Behavioral Hospital. The social worker is manipulative, unprofessional and is turning her against her family. Stay away from this place.

If you have kids and are looking for a place to take them, don't bring them here. They under staff their unit so they are not getting the care they need, the food is okay, forget about asking for seconds one plate each. The BHT'S ARE AMAZING its uper management who makes this place bad. I worked here and i know if i wanted my child to get help i wouldn't want them here.

Takes 5 hours to get processed. The witnesses bear false testimonies in court.

This place is HORRIBLE. Some of the people who work here are whackier than the patients. There is a bi-polar wench named Ginger. She's a tech. Goes off on patients in front of others. The groups are USELESS, except for one person named Lindsey. All the others just read off a piece if paper to you. Oh, they have "therapy horses," that are not safe. The female horse tries to bite people. The food absolutely SUCKS. Is cold before you even get to a seat. I not only found a one inch green bug in my salad that was alive, but also hair in my food. Things are either way overcooked (especially vegetables) or undercooked. Pink chicken, anyone? The patio areas are like an enlarged prison cell, so don't think you will get any time outside. Caseworker Steve, is a useless tool. Does NOTHING. If and when he shows up. I didn't even see him until about day 5. He also tries to get you to sign forms that are not filled out, then he adds to them while not with you to make it look like he's actually done something. If you can swing going to Banner, DO IT! The Dr. appears nice, at first. He did not do any medication check with me for 3 days. Just another 3rd world piece of ....His wife gives ya dirty looks. If you have never been to prison, but want the experience, this place is for you!

I can say nothing good about this place. Professionalism was lacking. They undermined me in front of my daughter. They sent my daughter home angrier than when she left when I begged them to have a reconciliation meeting with her and I. (Her thinking gets easily twisted up and she needs help untwisting it all). The staff told me she was a lost cause. Well, I got professional help for her, and she is doing terrific now and I never saw her as a lost cause. Their IOP was also useless, even my daughter said that.

Don't go here without your own medical doctor, attorney, and law enforcement. Or just don't go here. If you think you might need their services, make sure you have a small army on the outside in case they try to illegally falsely imprison you. But, if this happens, just tell them you want to be transferred elsewhere, then they no longer have in interest in your false imprisonment. Seriously, do yourself a favor and go to a real hospital.

This place is amazing!!! I dont know how people are making bad comments towards it. I myself was a patient here at aurora. And i can honestly say its the best. The counselors are amazing. The nurses are encourageing and give great advice. The doctors are very loving and caring. Yes they have strict rules. But thats only for the safety of the people that are in there. Nobody is rude at any time or moment. Its very peaceful in there. I could honestly say i recommend this place. (The one in tempe)

What a joke, if your medication takes 2 weeks to kick in, why am I getting put on and off pills every other day

If you're serious about taking your own life, you should try this place first. It will give you some time to breathe and not have to worry about anything. I was ready to check out and I somehow found thing place. The food SUCKS but, do your family a favor and think things through.

On March 1st, 2019, I was admitted into this facility for suicidal thoughts and plan. Although being admitted was a nightmare, the staff was welcoming and funny. The groups were boring, the food was mediocre at best. As much as I could complain about the facility and how I couldn't use deodorant or erasers- or just overall complain about the rules- it was a great place to heal and learn how to open up to my family. I suggest bringing your loved ones here! They'll learn so many real-life skills and how to handle their problems effectively.

NEVER AGAIN! My boyfriend went to Aurora on his own. They put words in his mouth during the initial interview. They kept him and everytime I call to find out what's going on, I am told to call back. It's been 4 days and I still know nothing. I went to visit him and we were told that we were sitting too close and if it continued, the visit would be cut short. Unbelievable! They treat the patients like prisoners. No human touch is allowed during visits. This place is a joke. DONT BRING YOUR LOVED ONE HERE.

I just got out the other day some staff were not the best but I had great care other wise. It only works if you focus and pay attention. Don't rush to get out do your time and heal. I was d/c yesterday and I'm much better.

In 2017, The psychiatrist gave out my information to the hospital when I asked if my medical records is going to be public and they said no. That was a lie. I should have tried to sue them for violating of HIPA. So now I have an embarrassing medical record out in the public when it should never have.

This place is an absolute waste of time and money and will only make your condition worse. Trust me. I went there in Dec. 2016. I was sent there after checking myself into Banner Thunderbird for extreme depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. I came to Banner that day for my IOP group. After being told that Banner did not have a bed for me, I received a call from Aurora Tempe saying they had a bed available and asked if I were okay with going there. I was a bit wary at first after a bad experience at the Aurora Glendale location but after I was repeatedly assured that I would be able to leave Aurora when I felt necessary, I accepted. I was transfered over there by ambulance (non-emergent) soon after. When I arrived at Aurora, the front desk staff was too incompetent to even open/unlock the doors for the medics. It took at least an hour. Both I and the medics felt a lot of frustration over this but this oversight was so tiny in comparison to everything else they did to me there. Intake took 16 hours. That is how long I was in the waiting room. I was asked to agree to take an antihistamine medication called Vistaril before even being checked in. I asked to leave at one point and was told that could not be determined until after intake. Obviously that frustrated me but I waited another 4 hours and told them I was going to call the cops if they didn't let me leave. I was then told by another patient in intake that they'd tried but the police would not respond to the call because psych facilities got to make their own rules or something along those lines. I waited there for the remainder of the 16 hours and was finally taken up to my wing and got a room. Upon arrival, I was pretty shocked learning all the incredibly strict rules. They didn't apply to me, I thought. But I suppose could be understandable for some. Or at least until I was asked to strip naked in front of a nurse. Probably the most uncomfortable part. I felt completely violated as the door was not even closed. After speaking with their psychiatrist it soon became clear they wanted to strip you of all your self respect and identity. They wanted zombies they could control with medication. The appt with him took about 5 minutes in which he magically learned everything about me! Magic! Wow! Nope. He did not look me in the eye even once, he did not speak directly to me, and he consistently talked over me. When i refused to take Zyprexa (an antipsychotic) I was immediately put under the "non compliant" category and treated like an idiot. Like I was not even human. He would not give me any of the medications I was prescribed by my personal psychiatrist and PCP. And these were absolutely positively NOT cold turkey meds. So I struggled a lot in there mostly with anxiety. I asked for a new Psychiatrist. I decided my third night in that I would try the Vistaril, as it's supposed to help with sleep and anxiety they told me. I had an allergic reaction to this which actually made the anxiety worse. But of course there's nothing they can do about it right? Wrong. They simply chose not to. That night I filled out an AMA form and was told the next morning by the psychiatrist that my social worker was finishing up the paperwork to send me to County! Unbelievable! Just cause he was butthurt I asked for another doctor. I was then offered to redact my form. Later that day, I did. I found out there was no paperwork underway. Just another manipulation to get me to stay. I also have a LOT of food allergies and intolerances which really restrict my diet but it is extremely important that I eat a specific way or I get very sick. So I became very pale, thin, and weak during my stay because they did not comply with my restrictions or check my blood sugar, etc., which even prisons are required to do. They would not allow us outside except for a few minutes sometimes in the evening. But it was basically a large outdoor prison cell on the top floor. We could not even look at the trees or sky:( Please go anywhere else. Good psychiatric care is worth the money. Aurora is not.

The lower level staff here is terrible. They think they're better than the patients they're supposedly helping, they're very callous in their attitude. My mother was told "You know black people don't take this much medication, all you have to do is refuse it and I don't have to give it to you." This is what one of the aides said to my schizoeffective mother. This is inappropriate. They also asked her "Why did you have children if you knew you had mental health problems". Why is staff encouraging my mother to have another abortion knowing the very first one PUT her there. That's literally what's she's in there coping with along with delusions and they're going to encourage this kind of behavior. Anytime you call the staff that answers the phone is short and rude. Anytime you come for visitation the front desk woman is also rude. If they aren't nurses or MDs they AREN'T NICE. It's been like this at this location for years. I suspect the turnover rate for their lower level employees is high.

Stuff And Things

My brother was stuck here for well over a month to get him off his meds and see what to do for a new medication plan. These blundering fools put him on entirely different meds to keep him doped up! Several of the staff are incompetent, the wait times in the lobby are MUCH longer than they should be. This place makes volatile situations worse.

They watched me take a piss and the staff was rude , don't go here unless you want to be watched while peeing by a guy named sayd

Excellent service at the front desk. Rare, for places such as this. Front desk tends to act mostly like they hate their jobs, and don't want any part of talking to people... not like that at all here. Extremely helpful, and cheery the entire time to boot.

Bunnie Hadsall

The nurses, BHTs, and psychiatrists here are fantastic

Courtney Erin

The staff here are horrible. Patients had to defuse tense situations between other patients because the staff didn't care. I was grabbed by the neck by a patient and asked inappropriate questions right next to the nurse's station and nobody said or did anything. The inpatient psychiatrist doesn't seem to do his job very well. I talked to many patients and he was prescribing the same drug to most of them (Vistaril). They don't have scrubs for you to wear here, so if you don't have clothes you're stuck wearing a hospital gown with an open back. If you're planning on settling for Aurora for inpatient psychiatric care, make sure that you are okay with staying for at least a week, because if you try to check yourself out they will threaten to file a petition in court to have you involuntarily hospitalized. If you're planning on doing ECT here, I would advise you to call your insurance and ask them about the financial details first. I was told I would pay a certain amount, I paid it, and now I am receiving more bills for my ECT and bills from the Anesthesiologists, who apparently charge separately, which I was not informed of. I've called Aurora twice so far to have them resubmit my claim to my secondary insurance, and both times they said "oh let me talk to so-and-so and then I will call you back." They never called me back either time.

This is a great place . It is truly what you make out of it and staying on medication.

You may have been sent here by a doctor or had a child committed here due to depression, like me. I know these facilities take in some extreme cases so some negative reviews are inevitable. I worked at Anasazi before and did my degree in psychology so I know a bit about what should go on. If a loved one or a child is sent here, you need to get them out. Get a court order if you have to but do not let them remain in their custody. My daughter went in with mild depression. She was still smiling, relatively happy but having some trouble with depressing thoughts that would come at her at times. She left completely unraveled as a human being. I've never seen her that bad before. She couldn't speak in full sentences. They gave her drugs I specifically said were forbidden because I knew the side effects. The staff wouldn't respond to questions and requests even though they are legally required to provide them. The staff is young, inexperienced and are easily duped. They are not interested in fixing anything. All they do is hold your child in an environment that doesn't have knives, strings or hoodies so they can't do harm to themselves. They do nothing to help and do extensive, lifelong damage to people here. I even saw a man call the police on the staff for what they did to him. He was lucky enough to get someone to lend him their cell phone so he could get help. This is a medieval experience for the patients that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Again, get your people out of here immediately. I've even stopped going to the doctor that recommended this location. No human should endure what they do to people.

This place (Tempe) is all about taking your money first and providing marginal care second. My son was admitted yesterday and in the past 36hrs has only been seen by a doctor once (3hrs after he was admitted). New medications were prescribed but have not been administered as I write this. Billing office called on the first day and said we owed a $3000.00 deductible even though it has already been met. I explained to Danielle (needs communication skills training) that our deductible resets on Oct. 1st and I knew for a fact that the deductible has been met. She basically argued with me that the insurance company said it reset on Jan. 1st. What I'm sure happened is that she made an assumption that all insurances reset on January 1st and didn't really dig into the details. Daniele isn't customer focused. Called the next day and got the insurance company on the phone and did a conference call to straighten things out with someone else in billing. Long story short I was right and Danielle was wrong. I was informed by my ex-wife that Danielle told her she would not speak to me about billing anymore because I was rude. Well excuse me for fighting for $3000.00 which I'm sure they would have taken their sweet time in returning to me. Told them we were pulling my son out of there and they said they were going to call CPS which we said fine because a state facility couldn't be any worse. They relented and agreed to discharge him. What a shakedown! Now on discharge they want to charge a co-pay amount based on a seven day stay when my son has only been there 36 hours. They said they would refund the difference after the insurance settles. That's not how it works people at Aurora!!! You don't charge an excessive co-pay. Needless to say I'm going to Aetna with this complaint.

Checked my daughter into Aurora for major depression and anxiety. They kept her safe. But, did extremely little in addressing her depression. We had to do all the work in terms of figuring out how to get my daughter post discharge care. They provided no guidance in terms of therapists and/or psychiatrists to see. They did push their own intensive outpatient treatment. Though we told them multiple times that their outpatient treatment would not work for us. They seemed more concerned with booking more business than with helping my daughter. If we had to do it over again, we would have never checked our daughter into Aurora. One session with the psychologist we found, did more for our daughter than a week at Aurora.

Koenigsdorf Patrick

They called the police to take me to jail for trying to leave. The cop came, and for some reason seemed more interested in my side of the story. He said he was tired of Veterans with the same complaint about aurora and had gone there for the same thing 15 times in the last year. Thank god the area has a good Police force. anyways, he took me to the VA and linked me in with better services.

After reading more reviews I feel the need to repost. I also gave them more stars than they probably deserve but let's get real. Ok, so the reviews of this place are consistently bad however; the staff is not the problem. My husband checked into Aurora after a drug overdose that nearly took his life. Keep in mind, the reviews you see are primarily from patients so you have to take them with a grain of salt. Is the food good? No. But there are three meals a day plus countless snacks and he never saw a bug; give me a break. If you have even crappy insurance, the cost was about 1300.00 for 7days including Meds. If a patient is checked in and ends up there for a month, there is a reason. Like maybe they need to be there. He saw plenty of people get discharged that had no business getting out and probably relapsed within an hour of hitting the pavement. Dr. Ali is a good man. Sometimes the patients don't like him because there are trying to get released. This is case with most of the patients. They come in, some of them straight from the emergency room, and all they want to do is get out and get high again. Many of the patients are belligerent, aggressive and have no interest in being treated. My husband saw countless patients file their AMA' s and get released 24 hours later. Dr. Ali can only treat the willing. There were only a few willing, the rest are playing the system. The problem at this facility is not the doctors, it's not the techs and it certainly isn't the social workers; the problem is the operations management. They are consistently under staffed. One tech cannot possibly take care of 20 high maintenance people many of which do not want any help and freak out when they don't get what they want when they want it. Check in took over 5 hours. That is completely unacceptable. Visiting hours are set for a specific time everyday. Only once was it on time and was typically up to 30 minutes late. Again, unacceptable! The management team is pathetic and should be fired and replaced with some folks who know how to run mental health facilities. If they don't do something to address these problems, the staff will leave. Especially the good ones. Their frustration is evident and unfortunately can manifest into despair in dealing with the patients. My husband says he would return (of course we hope he never has to) to Aurora and met some wonderful people while he was there. We hope they can resolve their issues for the sake of the patients and the staff. Poor management is the problem, not the techs, not the doctors, not the whiny patients, not even their enabling families. There are good people there and they try really hard to help those who want help.

Jacqueline Gamboa

The place is ran like a prison. Patients are treated poorly. Staff was rude, unprofessional. During phone calls with my son, I could hear the nurses who are suppose to take care of my child yelling at the patients and at one point her someone telling them to get off the phone NOW! Every time he called he was nervous and would abruptly end the calls. Place is ran on fear and not compassion. This place needs to be investigated, something horribly wrong with it. DO NOT LET YOUR LOVED ONES STAY IN THIS PLACE.

They made me stay despite the fact that there truly was no good reason. The stay there (for me) really wasn't all that bad, but I also don't know if it would be helpful to someone who needed help, since there really was nothing wrong with me. The reason that I am upset with them is that 1. They made me stay a week, despite being just mentally fine 2. When I finally did tell them what was going on at home (abuse), they didn't take me seriously, and *gave me back* to my abusive mother, despite my requests to be given to my dad. Also, while it didn't affect me, the bill from just a week staying there was *insane*

I have been put into a couple different behavioral health locations and this one is my favorite, the newest looking, pretty cleanly, and the food is very good for hospital food (hopefully they never have/will remove the soda machine!) But in other reviews there were statements of the nurses/orderly's being very rude...and I could not agree more. They treat you like you are not human. Almost like they think every client is incoherent and mentally retarded. If you try and confront the nurses behind the desk in the unit, it will back fire and make it even worse for you. So you can literally do nothing except write a comment and put it in a comment drop box and those are NOT taken seriously. So overall, the visit the facility itself is very appealing as well as the cafeteria and food however the nurses and the orderlies are very quick to being hostile rude and put you down I can understand when patience are constantly coming up to the nurses station begging for their medications and that being a little stressful or annoying but that is their job and being in that field you would expect them to be kinder and more considerate of people's feelings emotions and mental state of being rather than them using SMI as an excuse to treat patients very poorly.

Few things I didn't like: #1physician was not responsive to families of minors. #2 kids did not go outdoors at all for 2 weeks #3 staff completed the patient satisfaction survey themselves and did not ask for input from patient or families. Some of the staff were nice

My daughter was inpatient and outpatient here. The inpatient experience was horrible and the outpatient experience barely marginal. Their "evaluation" for care is mostly looking at your insurance and then finding some way to put your loved one inpatient if you have good enough insurance. most of the inpatient patient staff seem much more like concentration camp guards than nurses and mental health care professionals. They have rules for everything and the rules are often contradictory and senseless, rigid, and yet can change suddenly change when they want them to. I ran into the exceptionally rude nurse others have complained about, and she was every bit as bad as the other reviewers indicate. Out patient is slightly, slightly, better. One of my daughter's two therapists (who didn't have their licenses yet apparently) was fine. The other one was a cross between a church lady and a road rage driver. Apparently it's bad for a patient to lose their temper or say bad word but just fine when she does it. One night she almost exploded and screamed at a patient and looked like she was a split second from going completely postal. When two different patient's parents complained about it our concerns were brushed off and we were told it was a "therapist style". Yeah, it's a therapist style you'll rarely see except in prison or mob movies. Handouts when used were photocopies from books with titles that seemed to have nothing to do anything. Overall I give inpatient zero stars, and outpatient almost two stars for a total of just less than one star.

DO NOT GO HERE.....you will go to group sessions all day telling you the same thing over and over again, like a cult...You will NOT be able to use the telephone, but for 15 minutes of the day amongst approximately 20 others, so have fun fighting over phone times. O and God forbid if you are hungry or thirsty, good luck getting anything....There will also be NO TV time except for 45 minutes per day, so have fun coloring, and staring at the walls. I thought this place would be a positive environment, but i quickly learned that was wrong.O, and I sure hope you don't get Janice for a Tech, I think she needs meds more so than the patients, she's super rude, hates her job.

Aurora Behavioral Health limits any visitation with your loved ones to 3 days a week from what I understand. The hours for visitation start from around 6:00pm to 7:00pm. I am not sure who is responsible for these bizarre policies/visitation hours but they are unethical and wrong. This facility seems to operate like they are the State Arizona Mental Hospital where criminals are housed due to their mental illness per a court order. I would also like to let everyone know if you are planning on visiting anyone at this facility be prepared to show YOUR PAPERS (Driver’s License or proof of identity and the staff writes down your personal information.) If you do not provide them with any of this you will be denied visitation. Seeing how they expect you to play ball. The second you ask them for their personal information they refuse to give it to you. How ironic is that? This is unlawful and no law requires any of this to be conducted at all. If I had known any of this prior to my loved one being admitted to this facility I would have gladly said NO. I do not trust this facility with my loved one or anyone else’s after what I saw.

My daughter stayed at Aurora House for five days. This definitely was not the facility she needed to be at for depression and anxiety but once she was admitted we were told that if we took her out they would notify child protective services. On top of that, when it was time for her release I received a phone call the morning of demanding the co-pay of $5000 before she would be released. She did not receive anything that would help her with her issues. Would definitely not recommend this place to anyone.

I was safe and my needs were met; that's what really matters in a crisis. On top of that though, the techs and nurses I met were all very kind and compassionate people. The food was the best I've had in a hospital. And the groups; especially the equine therapy group, were eye opening. My experience was not perfect and yours won't be either. - - The number of people who go through that hospital is tremendous. The clinical staff are busy people who see a constantly changing stream of patients every day. Not every group therapy session will be interesting and self advocacy is a must, as in any hospital. Remember that everyone has something to teach you, if you're looking for it, and you never know who your story might touch. You can heal. You can be strong. This is just one step in your journey.

Miserably Delicate

Do not come here if you are a diabetic. They do NOT take care of you and absolutely do NOT send your diabetic kids here.

**MIXED REVIEW*** Thank you to the wonderful staff here in the ocotillio unit. BUT the initial front office service was terrible, my therapist was with me and they even treated him bad and once i was in the inside waiting room waiting to get admitted it was WORSE i waited in the waiting room for at least 8 hours! so ridiculous. I was waiting to get admitted anywhere from 1pm-2pm and didn't get a room until a little after 10pm I will admit, the staff in the ocotillio unit were AMAZING, they made me feel so much better about being away from home, i wish i remembered their names. Thank you for those kind BHT, Nurses and the doctor.

Reception Desk attendant less than professional. She assumes that everyone's is aware of the policies of the facility. I'm accustomed to professional employees who claim they are educated to carry themselves well and have a professional demeanor and appearance. 2 inch long fingernails DO NOT make anyone feel they are dealing with a top notch employee. I'll be following up with management after a friend has been discharged.

I went in for suicidal thoughts and waited 5 hours in the intake until midnight when they brought me to my room. You’re experience is going to be based on the staff that’s on duty, the other patients in your unit, and how well you cooperate with their prison-like standards. I’ve met very kind staff who clearly care about their job aswell as rude and uncaring staff who will delay the patients their rights such as shampoo and soap and treat you like a 2nd class citizen. As far as patients go, they seem to allow any case into the units, even if they disrupt the stabilizing and therapeutic enviroment with outbursts and pure insanity which isn’t exactly healthy. Also no deoderant, so if you go, use the lotion or handsoap but the handsoap leaves a rash. Goodluck

They Employ Doctors that break HIPA LAWS! Dr. Lincoln Brickford broke the Hipa Law telling everybody with in ear range in the "Public Hallway" why I was receiving treatment because he was ANGRY I complained about him and requested a new Doctor! He threatened to send me to CPU! Don't send your Dog here! They also lie to get you to check yourself in! You can't leave unless a Doctor releases you! They have no problem violating patient rights!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm about to graduate from the IOP program for emerging young adults and it's been a life changing experience. The staff have been very friendly and professional and my group therapist is amazing! Aurora was my last hope when I walked in for the first time two months ago. I felt so lost and alone, ready to give up. Now, I feel like I have a future- something to look forward to and I can't begin to explain how thankful I am for them and what they done for me.

Thomas Smith

They brought in med school trainees from ASU. What the hell? I'm on the brink of suicide and someone knows what's going on. Someone I don't even know and I'll never see again. The doctor told someone "You're helpless." Brocomonte to be exact. They said they wouldn't bill us, after we paid, and which we did, they keep on billing us! Ugh. I asked nurses for a composition template "Ok, we'll get it." two days later... I ask again. "Ok, we'll get it." It took my grandmother from Phoenix to drop some off. Ugh. They need to fix that up.

lisa sandoval

I would agree that Aurora is run like a jail/detention center and I assume it's for the safety of all patients, considering there are varying degrees of issues they deal with there. I didn't encounter any of the rude staff mentioned in other reviews and everyone I dealt with was kind. While the center did help my daughter at the time, I will look for another facility if I need it, based on the LACK of communication from them. I only received one phone call from their staff over 7 days and it was to collect the co-pay my insurance didn't cover. I always had to call them to ask questions, to get feedback on how my daughter was doing and now I feel that she didn't get the best care I could have found for her. My insurance company's behavioral health team has called me three times to see how she's doing and to offer support, which is more than I can say for Aurora and that is very disappointing to me. I expected so much more.

SuperKirby27 !

Wish I could give this place 0.5 a star. They were horrible to me when I was 14 in 2014 and there for 6 days. I was scared, anxious, alone, and terrified. Nurses there were rude and made my stay worse. Once I was admitted, it became a day to day struggle to see how fast I could get out. I had never been more scared in my entire life. Nurses and “care”-providers cussed in front of the other adolescents I was around, and they made us feel unwanted and uncared for. Worst experience I ever had. Please, PLEASE don’t bring your loved one here.

Hailey Michelle

i have never felt so heard and loved in aurora. staff was always there to help when u needed anything even if it’s just someone to hangout around. nurses were amazing to say the least. aurora has helped me so much thank you for everything.

Bennie Richards

Incompetent staff entirely. They denied AZ SMI patient a bed, which by the way they claimed to have plenty of, because she wasn’t a danger to herself yet. Although the 3 prior episodes in the last two years I guess werent a good enough indication. THIS IS A PRIVATE HOSPITAL, they MAKE money on patients, we wouldn’t have been there if it wasn’t necessary. I just wanted to get her treated before the delusions start. She knows her episodes, I know how they manifest, and the quack that spoke to me had no concern for her wellbeing despite my insisting how severe things get quickly. She is completely medication and treatment compliant and her meds are failing her, but they sent her home anyways. These “doctors” proved today to be negligent, and may well have violated her rights. Expect me to contact every advocate group, 3 on your side, mercy maricopa, AZ department of health, and pretty much anyone else who will listen. Use as last resort, at least with urgent psychiatric care they get you he help you need, even if they treat you poorly. Aurora behavioral health needs to be investigated.

Aurora is a Behavioral Health Hospital. It's specifically designed for patients struggling with any type of mental illness, and also for patients struggling with addictions and looking to de-tox, and find other services to help you be successful once you've been discharged. Each patient is assigned a caseworker and they help to make sure that appointments with a Psychiatrist, a Psychologist, and your Primary Care Physician are all scheduled before you leave. You also work closely with a counselor and a doctor while staying there. They review your current medications, talk about what you're currently experiencing, and discuss with you possible changes that may need to be made to your daily medications. The doctors, nurses, and staff are all very friendly. I would highly recommend this hospital. Please like and share if you found this information useful.

I was referred to Aurora because they have the best detox facility. I’ve been in the medical field for years and my experience with the staff was nothing imagined. Staff was loud , rude , making facial expressions at patients. It’s take a lot for an individual to walk in through the front door to seek the help they need and to be talked to / treated as they were a bother is not okay in any way shape or form. My boyfriend was finally admitted after a long 6 1/2 hrs.

Carol McClellan

My son is still at Aurora Tempe right now. I called his Doctor to find out why he was put back on as needed medication. I was told by Dr Chaduay to get lost and he hung up on me! Unbelievable! I want my son out of there!!!

Lisa Bailey

My son was let out and the same day he goes to jail for aggravated assault. He was there about three weeks. He got worse not better.

JP Greenleaf

The staff at the Peoria location are nearly criminal with indifference towards those that suffer. The large black counselor is a pathetic, small minded person with self serving interests. Don't ever go there.

Mykal Noyed

Staff would frequently forget to carry out requests, even for psyche meds. Some nurses were very good, but it's as though they were handcuffed by "protocol." Some were just plain nasty. This place should be looked into by the appropriate outside agencies. They have me meds that causeway whole body itch.

Not Today

Went in suicide not a main concern of mine 6 days in unable to raise my head it being so full of medication I tried to sign out and the doc couldn't stop talking about suicide and had me taken out by three cops in handcuffs and taken to to chi who let me go but aurora lost my backpack my birth certificate my social security card my disability paycars and my shoes. I can't get more than we are looking for it from anyone. Have you been outside? I can't walk buy water nothing . Is this what he meant if you call the doc out you going to wish you were dead? If you care about anyone thinking of getting help please poking them in another direction we can all be docs if we printed out certification from the internet these people don't know they a** from a hole in the ground go somewhere else. Did I mention they lost all my things in a total of 8 hours

Christina Pearson

My young adult daughter had been in this hospital around a year ago for medication management and suicidal thoughts. She needed help again and chose to go back to this location. In my opinion, that fact alone is a glowing review. Every behavioral facility will have problems. Almost every patient will wish their stay was longer or shorter. With so many factors such as: insurance approvals, clinicians with limited patient time, patients who are somewhere between forthcoming and deceptive, etc. It's almost impossible to have a perfect release date. All online reviews should be taken with a grain of salt, but with Behavioral Healthcare the salt should be an extra large grain.

First of all, I am not a doctor, so I can't even imagine what they were thinking when they treated me. I went in because I was feeling suicidal, and they took me off all my medications, including my anti-anxiety medicine. This was after meeting with the psychiatrist for MAYBE five minutes. So anyway, anyone who knows anything about benzos, knows you have to withdraw from them slowly. Otherwise you could have a fatal reaction. The doctor took me off these meds cold turkey, and I was off them for six days. So it was six days of me crying uncontrollably and having severe withdrawal symptoms before they did something. Obviously, they put me back on them and slowly tapered me off over a course of several months. JUST KIDDING. They discharged me. I'm pretty sure they didn't want to deal with me any more. After I left, I almost had to go right back to the ER because I was having severe chest pain. Anyway, the nurses and therapists are alright. But they don't have much power to do anything. I can confidently say this was the worst experience of my life.

Bryan White

The staff don’t know how to use there brains if they have one kinda doubt it lazy staff sitting here staff was whining because someone took her extra Scissors and whined tell she got them back

Daniel Kampe

I was in aurora for about a week, about two years back, because I wanted to commit suicide due to my depression. I am a Trans Masculine individual. Firstly, I'd like to say, You were all extremely unprofessional, you all treated me as if I was a female, even though I had told the staff many times that I was most certainly not, although I am transgender... One of the nurses had told me that I am "technically" a female so I should just get over it, my identity was not being respected, therefore I was not being respected. And trust me, everyone got the same attitude from the staff, they did very little for any of the other children staying there. I was very uncomfortable upon my arrival, and I was of course, asked to strip infront of a nurse. I asked the female nurse that came into my room if I could have a male one, because I am severely uncomfortable with female nurses because of past trauma and the fact that this nurse had similarities. They denied my right to one, and I was made to strip, clearly uncomfortable and not consenting, I had tried to make excuses for it in my head as to why they denied my right to a male nurse for example: "Oh, well. Maybe it's too late and all the male nurses have gone?" It was 3pm on a tuesday. No way they were gone... But, alas, it was certainly Not Good on my point of view. I had to fight to make a "revolution", with another Trans friend of mine who had come there to make sure that we got the respect we deserved, yet, me and him only won the right to sit at the boys table after putting up a fight forever with the head therapist. I was extremely and thoroughly disappointed with all of the staff. The night staff were awful, they had told me to just "Deal with it" and I felt none of my needs were being met. I am overweight. My friend (whom of which is thin) and I had noticed that they would serve out smaller portions of food and I would be fed "lighter" meals to keep me "healthy", and would practically force my thin friend, who bare in mind, was a healthy weight, drink 4 ensures A DAY, even after my friend had communicated that it upset his stomach, they still told him he had to. The only time we got to go outside on the patio was once, the whole week I was there. By the end of my visit to aurora I was sickly pale and I felt very weak when I came back to my house. It took me a while to start eating regularly again. This really upset me, by the time I figured out how messed up it really was. But fearing that I was just "crazy" (Like every mentally ill person in the world, especially ones who go through this kind of treatment) I never said a word about my experience, I felt utterly brainwashed, the minute you walk out of that place and see the trees. You all made me feel wrong, insane, and like I was worth little to nothing. Seeing the nurses ignore and not nurture or attempt to comfort a younger, mentally handicapped They kept me safe, but the memories, and everything I heard and saw I will never forget. So, all in all, I would NOT recommend taking any mentally ill person here, if you are able to, always look at the reviews of mental health facilities, before you go. I do not wish that hellish of a stay upon anyone.

Melissa Vickers

I was there a couple years ago I didn't know about this website intill now.when I was there I was treated great I hated that I had to be locked up.but the staff when I was there was great there was this guy idk if he still works there but he helped me thru a lot if I was crying he was there his name was D.i was treated excellently i reccomnd this hospital if you have bad thots or plan on hurting your self please go there or call just do something don't not hurt your self.aurora saved my life it was terrible not being with my family but it was worth it.i was happy for years ago.im think of going back not doing so great.but I highly recommend the one in Tempe don't go to the other one.its terrible there.i just wanna say thank you to the staff

Tracy Riggs

Excellent care and professionalism. I was concerned at first because of the low ratings here on this review but I had nothing to worry about. I highly recommend this place. I've had 10 yrs of behavioral health system experience with another child so I know what I'm talking about. Kiddos to Tempe Aurora.

On behalf of a patient who has been at Aurora Hospital (Tempe location) during May 2019, I wanted to publicly note a particular social worker working there — Dorinda. It’s so very rare to see such a caring professional in that kind of setting. I found Dorinda to be pro-active, conscientious, and passionate about her work. She followed through with what she said she would do. She kept me apprised. She responded to my messages & email. It’s so evident that she thoroughly enjoys her work and truly helping others. In addition to Dorinda, the majority of the staff I’ve dealt with have a good attitude and are helpful. It’s not easy to work in a behavioral health facility, but Aurora stands out from the rest of the crowd. I would highly recommend this particular facility over others in the Phoenix area.

Jason Henry

Way to go Aurora...your reviews are terrible, your customer service is rude and disgraceful, and your billing is vague and unwarranted. What exactly is your company's mission? If it's to help people, you consistently fail with every contact you encounter. It's sad to think an organization created for treating mental health, inadvertently causes so much grief.

Sexi Dva

DO NOT GO HERE!!! We came there to get help for my son. They told us via crisis team to be there by 730 and we end up waiting for over 4hrs. One intake was seen after us even though we were there before. Then after requesting to leave and that we will not be using there services they hold us against our will for an hr. I had to call the crisis line and then the police. Once the police show we were all of the sudden allowed to leave!

Rozry Sunray

If I could do a no star , I would. This place is a joke & they really make you know it. The person on the phone laughs at you. The intake staff are rude and make you feel unwelcomed. They make you lock your phones up even if you’re a PARENT . The only staff member that made you feel like you were in the right place is Jamie until his shift was over , everything went downhill from there. Other than that , I’d advise you to take your loved ones that are needing help , to another facility . I’m so amazed that this place is even open still ... Stay away from this place .... you’ll thank me later !

Chuck Huffman

I repeat do NOT go to this facility. It did nothing and all the kids that are in there know it! They laugh among each other. I too was bullied into going to this place since my daughter was using they told me if we left they would call CPS on me! They never told me how much it was going to cost and then bullied me into a a 600 per month payment and I lost my job! I have been paying like 100.00 a month every month but now they send me to collection. They tried to charge me 10k for 10 days ended up with a 4k bill for 10 days that did nothing...she was back to using within 60 days because she would not go to a therapist or anything I should have locked her up while I could at a behavioral facility like scared straight! This place is the biggest joke if I would have talked to my step daughter who does this before I sent her there she said do not ever send them there! They are a last resort!

Melanie Williamson

The only thing this place helps you with is making sure you have the worst experience ever so that you'll never seek help for mental health services ever again from anywhere for as long as you live.
