REVIEWS OF Psychiatry South, Inc. IN Alabama

I never had issues with this place I been seeing them for almost a year and only one time I had to wait over 1 hr. But Dr. Shug apologized and we took care of business as usual. If you don't want to be treated like an addict don't act like one, I walk in we talk about my mental issue and I told him what I was taking and what I feel it was working and what wasn't I told him you are the doctor so you tell me what would help me. Since then I feel great

My experience with Dr. Sugg has been awful. Aside from waiting for at least 45 minutes after the scheduled appointment time, he just sits there in his "office" typing on his little laptop IN HIS LAP because he doesn't even have a desk save an end table next to his chair. He asks the same battery of questions every time that can be answered with one word responses. I like to have good relationships with my medical providers. That is impossible with this man. He talks to me like I'm dumb. The last time I saw him it was an emergency visit because I ran out of refills for my medication and when I tried to express my dissatisfaction for the communication breakdown between him and me, he blamed me! At one point I was answering work related emails and texts while I sat in the chair waiting for him to finish typing whatever he was typing (which, by the way, I can't figure out what he could be putting in my chart since we don't talk at all) and he proceeded to sneer at me as though I was the one being rude. REALLY? He is a nightmare to work with and I dread every appointment I have with him.

Helpful staff, wonderful office. This is the first time in 13 years that I've felt comfortable with the people providing my care. I highly recommend this office!

Staff refuses to return emails or phone messages, making it impossible to speak to anyone if you have a problem. Very unprofessional staff. I would not recommend this group to anyone.

Woody .

You’re my favorite deputy!

While my psychiatrist, Dr. Austin, is absolutely wonderful, the staff at Psychiatry South are very unprofessional. I have been calling since my appointment 2 months ago to check on a bill and pay it. Each time I'm told I have to leave a message for billing and have them call me. I do and noone returns my call. This happened before and when I got to my appointment I was told I had a bill. I explained that I had tried to call on may occassions and left many messages. I was told they tried to return my call but they did not. I know this for a fact. I just want to pay a damn bill and can't. You would think they would want their patients to do that but apparently they don't. The front office staff needs a refresher course on how to run the front office and the billing office needs to understand that they need to help people who are willing to pay their bills. I will be discussing this at my next appointment with Dr. Austin. This is so unprofessional and aggrevating.

I have been going to this office for little over a year. At first it was great and they really made you think that you are welcomed and special, but the more I go the less I feel that way. They NEVER answer thei phone, they rush you off the phone when they do, and it gives me severe anxiety when they won't answer the phone to confirm anything and that's what I'm being seen about! It's gotten awful and I am going to start looking for another provider and see if I can find that atmosphere I had when I first started here

I have had anxiety all of my life and about 6 months ago, they developed into the form of panic attacks. When I have them I feel as if I can't breath and am going to die and they are happening on a daily basis. I have explained to dr sugg my history and my need for something until I can get on with daily life and be able to breath again. He has been very difficult and rude to me. He told me that he thinks I would be fine with just therapy, which I have tried, and told me he had other patients to see and I needed to leave as I was crying. He told me the fact that I've seen 3 different doctors about my anxiety raises questions. I still have no help for my anxiety and no prescription and am only getting by by drinking "calm" drinks from target and taking "anxiety vitamins" these however do not save me from the terrifying panic attacks that I am suffering on a daily basis. It feels like I'm having a heart attack at least twice a day. Maybe my post will create more anxiety awareness as I hope his other patients aren't having to suffer through what I am going through.

If I could rate negative or zero stars I would! I’ve been a patient here for years. I used to see Dr. Sung and she was amazing. When she left the practice, I was given no choice as to who my new doctor would be. In fact, I wasn’t made aware of her leaving until I show up for an appointment and they inform me that she is gone and I will now be seeing Dr. Sugg. Since that day, every visit has been TERRIBLE. Dr. Sugg is always late. As in, I wait in the waiting room for at LEAST an hour PAST my appointment time before he calls me back. This happens EVERY TIME. I’ve asked to speak to the office manager multiple times only to be told that, “I’m next in line.” I requested to switch to a different doctor (one that can see patients timely) and my request was denied for the reason, “they don’t see each other’s patients.” Also, the other reviews stating that all Dr. Sugg does is type into the computer are completely accurate. I do not feel as though he listens to my concerns or even cares to be frank. As I sit here typing this in the waiting room, it’s 1 hour and 15 min past my appointment time. This will be my last visit. I would NOT recommend this practice to anyone!

Jack Guyton

Dr. Austin, I must apologize because I am not able to meet with you today. I am not feeling safe even though I have not given you an adequate chance at showing me what I have read is not true. I only needed a brief appointment with a psychiatrist to get a referral for me to see a psychologist that I have worked with for many years in the past. Due to the current things I have read I don’t get the feeling it would be a win - win situation for both your practice or myself. I have been abused by psychiatrist who made several incorrect diagnosis’s. The way things appear do not help my confidence or security. I was only looking for instructions on how to find your office prior to leaving this in the morning when I was horrified with what all I have read. With all that is written I feel I should have had some warning about the accounts I may have read. I feel more information from your office would have offset the current situation. Thus, I can not be content do not want to waste your time and finances or my own as well. I hope you understand. You have my sincere apology. Good day,

Thanos .

After wiping out half the universe and killing my favorite daughter Gamora I fell into a deep depression. I didn’t know what to do with myself but then... I found psychiatry south and Therapist Wes Wilkes helped me get through my depression and realize what I did was wrong. This place is great!!!

Bailey Rhodes

I have called the past theee weeks to make an appointment and the front staff are not very nice. The intake process has taken over three weeks. Sadly it was easier for me to buy a car than to get into this practice. I have gone elsewhere with no help from the from staff on referrals. It's sad that this office wouldn't help me even when I pled for help. I felt little to no compassion.

Pamela Flanagan

now I am a little worried....

Elizabeth (Libby) Davis

Don’t waste your time here. I’ve been treated for a specific illness for years, came here when I moved and I was told I was “too young” for anything other than depression. They gave me meds that made me feel awful and won’t answer my calls about scheduling an appointment to fix it. If you’re looking for mental healthcare, Psychiatry South will worsen your mental health. **EDIT** In response to the "response from the owner" below - I did not try to call them at "almost 10:30" on a Saturday. I called on a Tuesday morning. I'm not so stupid that I would expect them to answer a call from 10:30 pm on a Saturday. This proves that this place is even more of a JOKE than I thought it was.

Matthew Wilson

Seriously the worst place I have ever been to. I have been visiting this place for over a year now and taking the same medication for a year. Suddenly they cant refill my prescription because the "doctor" I saw no longer works there. So they suddenly cut my medication off completely, and proceed ro tell me that i have to ckme in for an appointment to have my prescription refilled. I dont mind coming for an appointment, but you just called and cancelled an appointment we had scheduled for last month. Why would you refuse to refill? They could at least provide me enough of my daily medication to last until my next scheduled appointment, but no, they wont eveb do that. The staff is ignorant and could care less about anyone. When I ask to speak with someone from administration, I constantly get forwarded to a voicemail in which the call is never returned. I seriously believe being a crash test dummy would be more beneficial than trying to seek any kind of assistance from these idiots. For those who have had the same or similar frustrations from these people, please join me in contacting the State and let's move forward from that point. Apparently these people believe mental health is a joke.

David Smith

Horrible! If you didn't need a psychiatrist before dealing with these people you'll definitely need one afterward!!!

Katia Kolbin

I can’t even give one star. I am writing this, as I just found out I’m pregnant and sick and called for an appt yesterday. I love my doctor, and it’s the only reason I’ve been tolerating this place, but today is the day I have to go somewhere else. I can’t even tell you how unorganized this place is, the staff is rude. Writing this review, as I’m sitting to see my doctor and they just told me they do not have an appointment for me. This was the final straw. Please, please, please... listen to these reviews, they don’t lie! I don’t know how this place is still in business! PS. I have never waited less than an hour, sometim s two at this place. In fact, every time I see my doc, I block a 3 hour wondow. Update: they tried to argue with me. Yep, that happens. I have never missed an appt, I am an organized person. They told me they had a cancellation for 2:50. It’s 3:45, and I’m still waiting to see the Doc. Run!!!

Mary Hudgins

My Dr. Is wonderful But the office staff is the WORST I have ever seen. I called for a refill on my prescription 6 or 7 time even telling them on the multiple voicemails I left that I could come in just to get a refill if they needed me too, I also left a message on THEIR webpage about this and NEVER got a call back, its been 4 weeks now! My primary the following Monday had to write a Rx for me after my pharmacy had to give me a emergency refill for 3 days. I have multiple health problems including a heart condition which would have been made worst if I had suddenly stop my medication. I was referred to this company by my wonderful Rheumatologist, who would have never referred me if he knew what would happen. So I suggest if you need medication for ANY medical condition that this "company" would write for you DO NOT need to go here! Absolutely do not go here for any medication or if you might need emergency medical attention!

Emily Allen

Dr. Austin was wonderful. However, when a communication issue (not returning my calls) came up recently, I ended up running out of ALL of my medication. (VERY bad thing.) I had to go to the office in person to speak to someone. I didn't get a single apology, and instead of being treated as an adult with a valid complaint, I was talked down to and treated as a child who was misbehaving. I asked to be discharged so I could find another doctor, and two days ago received a letter stating that I had been "dismissed due to noncompliance." Over the top incompetence on their part. They were supposed to get me enough meds to last 30 days two weeks ago; haven't heard a word, even after the pharmacy faxed them on my behalf. Go to a place where the staff, not just the doctors, respect the patients.

Dana Elkins

If I could give anything below a one star I would!! Please do not waste your time with this facility. The office personell are incompetent. I gave the benefit of the doubt after reading these reviews...believe all of them!

Crystal Makous

Joshua Blair

Don’t visit with Linsey she will schedule a bunch of appointments without consulting you.

Zach Edwards

First off I have never dealt with such incompetent people in my life. The office staff is the rudest and most disrespectful group of people I've ever meet. They will not return phone calls to the patient or to the pharmacy about medications or any other reason. If you need a prior authorization for your insurance plan on waiting atleast three weeks to a month for them to file it and that's only after you've payed their $25.00 processing fee and that's for each p.a. If you call and cancel an appointment they will still charge you $75 if they forgot to take you off the schedule because of an office mistake.

Steve Martin

Staff not responsive to voicemail or answering phone to get appt scheduled. If your only a quarterly scheduled ie... not a high income patient your considered a C client. Sung will drop you off her patient list by scheduling you months away even if you need your prescription filled. I had to reschedule an appointment and was only given a time that was two months out, knowing my prescription had expired.

Annamarie Wallace

I feel that they are mean and do not care about patients well-being. They mostly deal with court referral patients and treat all their patients as criminals and/or drug addicts. This place does not feel welcoming and I feel as though anything I said was ignored and irrelevant to them.

vandalyn green

I'm a new patient. I HEARD my so called doctor put patients ahead of my appointed time. I've been waiting over an hour. The dr is Anderson and I'm already having a negative outcome. NOT COOL!

Countess Fleming

BBB rating is an F. Possible FRAUDULENT billing practices. BEWARE of this practice. Office staff COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL AND RUDE. I would never recommend this practice. Also, Dr. Lazenby and Dr. Austin will not return your phone calls. Dr. Countess Fleming

Pheobe Phantomhive

I DIDN'T SEE A DOCTOR PERSONALLY. I AM FROM A DOCTORS AND WE REFERRED A PATIENT.THE PATIENT WAS TREATED POORLY BY THIS OFFICE STAFF AND THE NP. THE STAFF WAS ALSO RUDE TO THE REFERRING DOCTOR'S OFFICE. NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE WILL NOT BE REFERRING TO THIS GROUP AGAIN.

Chris A

Never had any problems out of psychiatry south. I have been seeing them for years.

Susan Wiggins - Simpson

Dr. Anderson was great! He just disappeared, gone! not given a chance to pick another doctor! I was thrown on to Dr sugg, no say! Dr. Sugg has little to no compassion. He never has answers to questions. Rather he looks at his laptop pushing whatever on the screen!!! I hope the owner has took notice of all the complaints regarding Dr. Sugg and does something about it *update they have & don't care! Having a doctrine degree gives you the title doctor but it does not make you a good doctor and it sure doesn't give you compassion. Amanda Miller is so right about everything she said and I have went through the same nightmare!! UPDATE: I having stage 4 terminal cancer going through A LOT as a single mom...thank God I found another psychiatrist that cares! That recognizes PTSD. One that doesn't drug test you every single time, making you feel singled out like a junky, not every patient was drug tested every time!! *update again! E Campbell re your review 1st "your not sure why Dr sugg has many negative reviews? maybe because there's a problem with him and you don't get it because you & only 2 others like him out of over 70 reviews, your judgemental too like him" like ass-uming one is abusing their medication! I did NOT abuse my medication, even passed every pill count much less drug test repeatedly not that its your business. I referred to how he would test me monthly but not other patients, that is "singling one out" and if i was African American I would slap him with a discrimination lawsuit along with Psychiatry south who condones all the negative complaints of his behavior!! I asked him why he stayed on the laptop (i have no reason to make it up) and his reply "he must update my medical info" well my cancer is not for him to update that's for my oncologist! fyi I have stage 4 cancer and do not even take pain meds while you want to pass judgement, I see why you hit it off with him! You need to stick to reviewing the doctor not judging other patients! I'd like to know why management brushes off the negative reviews only focusing on a positive one, probably shocked to see one! I mean when most reviews are negative among over 70, the common denominator is the doctor and or practice! I too asked to see another doctor in the practice, I know Dr. Austin is a wonderful caring doctor but no! i was told I would have to do an exit review with Dr. sugg to get such approval instead he pointed out my original google negative review on here and immediately began to cut my medication which is dangerous and clearly retaliation. I'm only on Wellbutrin and 2 benzo a day, my goodness, divorced single mom, ptsd and stage 4 cancer, your anxiety/depression/ptsd would be bad too! Documenting is very important but not during the whole appointment never giving the patient attention and when given, uncaring and short with you! Also, a good psychiatrist documents in between patients but when the doctor is late that leaves him no time to do so which brings me to the time I came from Tuscaloosa all the way to Birmingham for him not to be there, however he did apologize when I had seen him at the next visit for no-one failing to notify me. I can appreciate that but it's a huge inconvenience after a bilateral mastectomy and 2 hour round trip! A doctor must find a balance between documenting and doctoring after all you are there to get help, to be listened too not to documented like you are in a court trial.. I get the DEA is hammering down but its pretty clear they are controlling many doctors to the point the patient does not matter only covering their as*! Well there are ones that can care for a patient and do it legally documenting keeping in DEA guidelines, balancing it out! Matter of fact when one documents to heavily you have to question why? As there's no reason to be concerned with overly documenting when you know you been ethical and management should agree, however they don't seem to care about ones who have been negatively affected only positive reviews.

The office staff is tolerable, and the Doctor was terrible. Dr. Suggs is an awful Doctor, who I unfortunately have seen before at the Alabama Psychiatric Building. He will NOT work with you. He will NOT give you any options. He doesn't listen to anything that you have to say, rather he hears it, and does not respond AT ALL. I have seen many doctors, and prefer any of them, over him. Please, do yourself a favor and find different psychiatric services. I shouldn't have ignored Psychiatry South's terrible ratings, and neither should anyone else. I truly have never been so insulted; and would hate for anyone to be talked down to, like I was. Truly a shame.

Tammy Stringfellow

I saw Dr. Suggs APS and wasn't impressed with him. However I was pregnant and didn't need any medication from him. I told him I fully intended to go back on all my medication as soon as I had the baby. Even then he pushed the non-addictive mild medications for when I did go back on them. I ended up seeing another doctor after I had the baby and went back on all my normal meds without an issue. As of last month my doctor that had been prescribing me meds left her practice. She suggested Dr. Suggs and I'm not sure why but I agreed to see him. I was told to arrive at 9:40 which I did. I then filled out multiple pages of paperwork. After an hour or so I asked the somewhat rude receptionist what was taking so long. She said I still needed to do labs! Labs, seriously for what? I have NEVER had to do labs to see a psychiatrist but whatever. After labs I waited another 30-45mins. When I saw Dr.Suggs I explained how I had been having more anxiety than usual due to some personal issues. He then asked all about the personal issues only to give me NO options to up the dosage of my anxiety meds or he said I could quit taking one of the medicines I've been taking for over 10 years. He said that benzo's are habit forming and benzo's aren't meant to be used for long term use. I asked him why so many doctors had prescribed these for over 15yrs without hesitation. He just shrugged and said he didn't know. I should also mention that Dr. Suggs literally has the personality of a robot. I would've been better off going to a doc in the box. He seems to think that the medications that he likes for his patients to take is the right medication for every patient to take. I've taken almost every med you can think of. My opinion of what has worked and what hasn't worked should matter. Also, he questioned me so much on dates and RX's that were filled that I felt like he was accusing me of Doctor shopping. That isn't the case I've just had to see diff docs due to insurance or APS closing or etc! Anyway, I will NEVER set foot I that place again. Dr. Suggs needs to switch specialities bcse he sucks at compassion and he's just the kind of Doctor that makes you feel embarrassed you even went to the doctor! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME at this place!! Awful staff and even worse is Dr. Suggs the inconsiderate robot.

Christina Diaz

I was a first time patient to see Dr. Anderson and I literally sat in the waiting room that day for 2 hours as I watched everyone that got there after me be called back. Besides that everyone was friendly and I enjoyed my Doctor, just think that the wait time should be adjusted for patients.

Sara Bryan

I have been going to see Dr Cassidy for 2 years. She left but I decided to stay. Had my 3 month appointment today to see the new doctor and they told me I needed a referral or it would be a $200 out of pocket payment. I had a referral. I drove an hour for them to turn me away. Front desk was less than helpful telling me to call my GP and my insurance should've informed me that I needed a referral. Why do I need to call about something I wasn't even told I needed and how would an insurance company know when I had an appointment? Ran my card as she was telling me all of this. I've never had any issues with these guys before but it is unbelievably bad business to let someone drive so far and treat them this way. Update 10/19 I love how these people in "management" never called me back about refunding what they charged me and didn't leave a response ON GOOGLE until 2 days ago. This place is a joke. They do not care about their patients or how they handle business at all! Several other places in Birmingham to go to. Don't waste your time...

Erik Thomas

Pathetic customer service. The first question was what type of insurance do you have? Now I see why the ratings are so bad on google.

Spongebob Squarepants

I’M READY, I’M READY, FOR MY APPOINTMENT WITH TREY THE NURSE PRACTITIONER!!!

Matthew Bailey

Robert Persons

Worst staff ever. Very rude. Will not return calls.

Andrew H

First of all, to charge someone $25 to prior approve a medication that the Dr. decided to prescribe is a joke and then they take their on sweet time to do it. Me and my wife both called and left messages for 4 days with no return call or prior approval. So I ended up calling the front desk to get this accomplished but had no problem taking the $25. I really do question the competency at this clinic. And yes I would be glad to discuss this with the management there.

Janel Shestak

It’s a decent drive for me to get here, the wait is not long and my psychiatrist and I finally began to get somewhere...and then they discharged me. Without telling me why. I thought it was a payment for a cancellation, but it was for too many cancellations. Which I found out more months later! They continually transferred me to the administrators number which I left voicemails and NO ONE EVER called me back. They could have at least explained this tstuff me earlier.

Lara B

Wanted to be a new patient there but they didn't even give me a chance! Took all my info and never called me back! I called them twice, she said they were working on checking my insurance info (really, all other places tell you straight ahead if they accept my insurance or not) !!!! Terrible!!!

Paula Hutsler

This place is RUDE! Don’t go! They literally do not care about their patients .

UPDATE: After almost 90 days of trying to reach this office: Emails, phone calls, voicemails, and physically dropping off a letter to the office, I never received a phone call back. I have now received a letter saying I have been a non compliant patient and they are terminating me as a patient. PSYCHIATRY SOUTH is unprofessional and does not care about their patients. #1: $500 for an appointment and urinalysis. #2: It has been 40 days now I've been trying to get in touch with my doctor, a manager, WHOEVER can help. I'm not calling to make an appointment, I'm calling with a concern and can't get any resolution. I have even physically gone up to the office and was brushed off. I have now had to come off my medication cold turkey because the staff won't return my MANY calls and voicemails. This is extremely dangerous with the medication I'm on. Additonally, the staff has NO CLUE about private pay (no insurance) fees. I got a bill in the mail 3 months after my appointment, and I paid OUT OF POCKET. My charges shouldn't be a mystery, they aren't even filing insurance. Don't waste your time and money here.

New Patient within just hours now. They did not call in a prescription, will not answer the phone when you try to call busy I get but ,hire better staff that deals with customer calls hey take a sticky note duhhhh???. voice mail, call back, FORGET ABOUT IT. AVOID THIS LOCATION LIKE THE PLAGUE. No customer service whatsoever!!!!

Emmanuel Tynes

Wait is too long. No one returns phone calls. Everyone acts like their clients are an inconvenience.

Ashley Wright

I love my doctor! This location is very easy to get to. The office staff has overall been nice and courteous. There has been a few appointments where I have had to wait over an hour but not many. I don't like that you have to pay for the doctors to fill out FMLA information. I haven't really ever had a problem getting an appointment. The only thing I don't like is when you leave a message for the doctor, the nurse practitioner returns her calls. She not very helpful in the slightest and normally takes a while to return your call. Other than that I have been very happy with them. They are 100 times better than the last psychiatrist I saw!!

Carlyle Galloway

The psychiatrist Dr. Sug is consistently an hour late for appointments, the office staff is horrible and never answers the phone or returns calls. Stay away. Don't give this place business.

Purified Water

Do cubed people water their baguettes???? Where is Ryan??

Mary Vines

As this was my first visit, I was not impressed by the help out front. They talked down to you if you forgot to initial a line. Other than that, which I can, live with, the person that I was assigned to was extremely helpful. As I was called in, I felt comfortable instantly. Brittany was very understanding and listened well to everything I had to say. I finally found someone to talk to that understood me. We accomplished a lot for just 1 visit and I am looking forward to seeing her again and again.

Lucy S

Pending.. Before I complete this review I'm going to follow up with the office and see what they have to say about the critical errors they have made.

Jane Smith

Cheyanne Maree

The Doctor was nice, but the administrative staff is absolutely terrible. Worst I have ever seen. They made an appointment for me without consulting me, and then did not notify me of said appointment, and then because I did not show up to the appointment I did not know about, they decided to drop me as a patient because I was "non-compliant". Trying to fix the issue is just an absolute headache. I would not recommend Psychiatry South to anyone, and would go as far as to tell others to avoid it like the plague.

Garrett Coyne

Jeremy Bullock

Love Dr. Suggs and his team. I've had to wait excessively once (on my initial visit) but the front desk attendant apologized and told me when I arrived that the day was moving behind. Dr. Suggs has followed through with everything he has promised and is helping me tremendously.

Mary Samples-Hudgins

So I got a $75 bill from these people after I cancelled an appointment on 15th that was scheduled for the 18th. You apperantly cannot post pictures on Google review but if you would like to see my phone record I posted a comment to your Facebook page as well as sent a private message to you... I'm not going to call you again because it apperantly will not do any good.

Kayla Mardis

I haven't been here yet; I might end up here due to my constant terroristic thoughts.

Sharron Johns

I love Dr Lazenby and all the staff. Even when they have transitioned staff, someone always returns my calls. Dr Lazenby is the best. And the communication with the staff to get messages back and forth have been great. And I’ve nothing but praises for them dealing with all my insurance craziness. Dr Lazenby gives best quality of care, but also helps research the best medication that’s affordable for you that treats your symptoms.

Casey C.

My appointment was cancelled and I missed the initial call from Psychiatry South to reschedule. I immediately called back to reschedule with no luck. I have been trying to reschedule for 3 weeks now with no luck. I've been hung up on several times and the recording at the beginning of the call warns leaving multiple voice mails delays the response time. I have not received a response from the first voice mail I left three weeks ago so I tried it again today. Fingers crossed! You are dealing with mental health so I would think you would have a sense of urgency. I have time sensitive meds that I have to have check up visits to recieve. One more thing, all of the reviews on here are all similar complaints. Do you not think it is time to reevaluate you admin procedures, staff, process, etc? I love my doctor so I was always willing to wait 30 min to an hour to be called back for my quarterly visit, but I think it is time to find another just because of the front of the office.

Andrew Elliott

Staff is very un-responsive. In general avoid this place it will make everything more complicated and more expensive than it should be. Just avoid.

Kathie C. Jones

I have had awesome care by Dr Rebecca Jones, as well as Suzette Smalley, counselor.

Katie S

The WORST place!!! They never return your phone calls and don't care about the patient or their needs!! Especially Dr. Suggs!! The staff is a joke!!! Do not go here!!

Preston Adams

I'm a dentist, I know the challenges of scheduling and managing an office. The only word I have to describe this place: absolutely terrible.

Patrick Crystal Brophy

Great doctors and staff, but they are very confused over appointments and insurance. I have corrected them several times that they are billing the wrong insurance and they still haven't fixed the issue after the efforts I have made to explain to them how they are billing the wrong insurance company. Also, every appointment I've had with my psychiatrist had been rescheduled. Today they called me to reschedule tomorrow's appointment (so short notice) I've already taken off work tomorrow to go, plus I am out of Meds. I wish they would have let me know a lot sooner than the day before.

Patrick Michael

I strongly urge everyone to avoid this group. Most of the practitioners only work a couple of days per week. If you are having a serious issue that is not life-threatening, it may be weeks before your provider or designee responds. I've been a patient in this group for a few years now and feel that I must make a change. I even contacted the office manager regarding my concerns and no one has returned my phone call after 10 days. One other thing, this office has caused several traumatic events in my life due to their negligence. The following is the most impactful example: I was in an intense academic program at a local university. I needed documentation from my physicians to implement a 504 plan. I gave information to my provider the first time--the 504 office didn't receive it. The second time, I literally hand-delivered the documents to the office with a note describing the urgency of my situation. Finally, the 504 office had to contact my provider on my behalf to get the needed information. I have multiple health issues that require vigilance on my behalf to manage. The 504 office could not act on any of my disabilities until all documentation was in place. Because of this, I was unable to do what was required for the program. The day I had my 504 hearing to put my plan in place, I had just left a meeting with the program director informing me that I was being dismissed from the program because of my poor performance in the clinical setting.

I've had nothing but trouble since I started coming to this practice. The office staff is rude and waits forever to return calls, if you get a call back at all. Not to mention having an appointment scheduled on the doctor's off day at the location - with no phone call ahead of time. Talk about a wasted trip! Save yourself the hassle and go somewhere else!

EDITED WITH AN UPDATE: My initial experience here was wonderful. In a matter of a few months, we had a perfect treatment plan in place. For some reason, though, they later became completely incapable of communicating. You have to harass them with messages for weeks just to get a response. In December, I turned 26 and lost my insurance. Dr. Austin assured me that this wouldn't stop me from getting what I needed. Every time I needed refills, it would take weeks of calls and me cutting my meds in half to make them last before she finally called them in, and after 4 months of that, she stopped calling them in at all and I was sent a letter saying that they were dropping me. I am still uninsured and cannot see a new doctor. Once I stopped being a walking dollar sign, my health and safety no longer mattered. I am deeply regretting recommending them to people as they've had equally terrible experiences, and I'm horrified at this lack of humanity. Shame on you. Updates: the nurse finally called me after I escalated it to a couple angry voicemails. She told me that she would call in one last prescription as I don't have health insurance and cannot get a new doctor right now. She explained I'd have a 6month supply of all 3 of my meds. That was a lie, she called in 1 month of 1 of them, forcing me to stop taking the others suddenly. Today I discovered that one of the drugs I'm on interacts terribly with birth control, rendering both ineffective and causing seizures. My doctor never once mentioned this despite knowing what drugs I take. Glad I'm not pregnant or dead, guys, good looking out! Don't go to these people. They don't care about you, only the money they stand to make from you, and that is incredibly clear.

This is the most on-time, organized, competent and caring physician groups I’ve ever used. I’ve been using them for years moving to this location from their old location. If someone had a bad experience there must have been misunderstanding. I’ve never seen anything incompetent or uncaring about this staff!

I visited PSI at the end of February as a new patient. The receptionist was helpful and explained that the first appointment was longer. I appreciate the thoroughness—Dr. Sugg went through my patient intake forms and medical history in an unbiased way. As a patient, it is comforting to know that this office is committed to the best care, especially with something as delicate as mental health and wellbeing. Thanks!

Dr lazenby is great dr. I was fortunate enough to see her at medplex. She treated me for substance abuse and depression and anxiety. She really took time with me and went out of her way to help me every way she could. I want to know if it's possible for me to see her to continue my psyche medications cause I really enjoyed bring her patient. She is one in a million.

If I could leave this place 0 stars I would. Not only was I supposed to be scheduled to see a therapist, not a nurse practitioner, my appt was for 10:30am. We were in the building by 10:05, paperwork was completely finished by 20 minutes after 10. 11:10 rolls around, still nothing. I walked to the front desk twice, curious as to how.much longer the wait would be The lady at the front desk should do a self check on her attitude, especially given her place of employment. Perhaps, a job where you don't have to deal with people would be ideal. This was supposed to my first appointment with them, and I decided to decline all future services with them based off of professionalism, attitude and all around disrespect to your potential patients. I would highly suggest finding another office for your physch needs, all of the negative reviews seem very justified.

I have been trying since April to be seen by someone. I finally get my information sent to them and they never called back. I waited a week and called again and was told to call back if I didn’t hear anything. So I called again the next day and had to leave a voicemail. I was never called back. I called again the day after that and still no answer. It’s a really good thing I haven’t been out of medicine for almost 2 months now. The people here need to be better at scheduling, I have seen reviews where the same as happened to other people, so I know I’m not the only one. The lack of competency is putting people at risk. This is psychological problems that are being left untreated due to the inability to get anybody scheduled.

Pinocchio .

I cannot tell a lie psychiatry south is truly the best!

Dr. Sugg insisted on changing the course of my medication, even after receiving my history from a previous provider showing YEARS of consistently effective treatment. Additionally, he failed to electronically submit a 2 week prescription to get me through until I found a more reasonable provider, which has left me without crucial medication until then. Having just moved to the Birmingham area, I cannot think of a more counterproductive circumstance than having gone with Dr. Sugg as my initial mental health caregiver.

Dillon Quinn

The office staff is completely inconsiderate and down right rude. Unable to accomplish simple task and the patient care is poor. I wouldn't recommend this clinic

Sarah Beutjer

Please do yourself a favor and save yourself some time and a lot of stress! The wait times are absurd, the staff is absolutely the rudest staff at a doctors office I’ve ever dealt with and they never answer the phone! I was paying double the copy that I was supposed to be paying and they refuse to give me a credit for the extra they received and they say I owe money that I don’t! Trust me run, run the other way as fast as possible! There is not one good thing I can say about Psychiatry South. They have an F with the BBB! Do any research and there is nothing but bad reviews everywhere! From what I’ve read and seen first hand lots of signs of insurance fraud! I have no idea how this place is still in business!

I have been a patient here for almost 4 years and have had nothing but the best treatment. My calls are returned promptly and the staff is ever so accommodating at scheduling appointments when I need to be seen earlier than my original appointment.

Kayla Guillot

I love this office! The receptionists have always been kind and helpful. I have had to wait for some appointments before to see my main doctor, Dr. Jones (not at the fault of her - hint: if other patients run late then your appointment gets pushed back too. It's not always the doctor or the staff's fault for your wait). I've never had to wait to see my therapist (Wilkes) and it is pretty easy to get an appointment with my therapist when needed. My doctor is harder to get scheduled with but it is only due to the amount of patients she has (which to me further proves she is a great doctor). Just for reference, I did see my therapist as close as once a week at one point and once a month for my doctor and I didn't have a problem finding an appointment to fit my schedule. Keep in mind as well, this is a large office with several doctors and therapists which accounts for the hundreds of patients they see and can lead to a wait time for documents which is normal. As a patient, it is important to have patience and be kind to the people (office staff) who you need help from. I would 100% recommend and have recommended this office to anyone who needs it! Keep up the good work ladies and gents!

HULK SMASH!!!!! HULK DOES NOT SMASH ANYMORE AFTER GETTING HELP FROM PSYCHIATRIST!!!

Never had any issues with the staff or the doctors. Dr Austin is great! The only issue I had was that they charged 1400 for a drug test that was sent to some random hospital in Georgia. Had to pay 300 out of pocket with no prior communication about said cost

Cody Slovensky

As a patient of Dr. Anderson, I am very pleased with my service. He is very professional, the office staff is great and the environment is nice. Highly recommend this office.

Bailey Johnson

I could already tell I would have a terrible experience with this place just by reading t's other reviews. I will not be returning here ever again. Very rude staff. I have some anxiety issues so being stuck in a small room for more than 30 minutes while some rude lady was smacking her gum loud was enough for me.

Patchy the Pirate

Arghhhhh Dr Sugg is a great matey!

Kathey White

Dr. Austin is great but I would agree with the above that the office staff are horrible. I'm not sure the doctors are aware of all that goes on up front, because you can't get past the "gate keeper". She would get 5 stars from me but the office staff deserves far less.

Dre Turner

The front desk receptionist is completely rude. Anytime I call their office she immediately puts me on hold without acknowledging me. What's the point in setting an appointment when you have to wait so long!

Lauress Kearse

Never been here. I drive an hour away to see my doctor. I asked him to refer someone close to me and he gave me this facility name. I'm going to check the reviews on the location in Hoover and if it is as bad as this place, I will be glad to continue to drive to Tuscaloosa. I like my doctor and I never wait more than an hour. Thanks for the heads up. I pay cash for my visits. The last thing I want to deal with is a doctor or staff that is rude and insensitive. If all these reviews are true, you guys need to do better. Someone recommended my doctor and I recommended a few to him as well. I would never recommend this place. Wow…

Jeremy Thompson

The idiot in the office wanted me to cold turkey drop medication that causes serious side effects with no alternatives. he offered no alternatives to this he just said you must stop taking immediately. so I give this place a one only because I can't give it a negative one plus they're so lockdown they even make you pee in a cup so apparently at some point there were about to lose their license or something. so they've had to lock down with more paperwork and more drug testing. all that to say I had a very very very bad experience at this place

Gabrielle Quarles

So far my experience have been piss poor. Three appointments and I still haven't been seen by anyone. I got off work from working 630p-7a, yes a 12 hour shift, to come here and because I was told that if I came in early I will be seen early. Not the case. I get there at around 745 and was told by the "manager" that my appointment will start at around 9. When I tell her I have an interview at 10 she said the only option is to reschedule. I was misinformed and wasted time and gas just to be turned around. I called back wanting to speak with a manager and was placed on hold for around 12 minutes and was told she'll leave a message. I left another facility and was referred by my PCP to go to yall and so far i am upset. So I work another 12 hour shift tonight and have to do the same thing tomorrow and I am afraid I will be turned around again. I have no medicine now. IDK, maybe I am way in my feelings about this but when you drove across town just to be turned around, it's upsetting.

It is very unfortunate that Dr. Anderson works at this particular practice as his review as a doctor is 5 stars but the office staff is highly incompetent and practices horrific customer service, which is putting it mildly. I have been waiting for a response for over a week now on prior approval for my medication due to a new insurance carrier. My pharmacy has faxed over the information 4 different times now along with calling and leaving messages with no response. I myself have called multiple times and left messages for Kelly, the clinical specialist, and also with reception. I have received one phone call back from reception who just sent me back through to Kelly who of course did not pick up the phone. I am currently trying to reach them as well through sheer persistence. My phone call has been answered once and as I was explaining my issue, I was cut off midsentence. I then asked if I needed to just speak with Dr. Anderson directly. This was apparently too much information for this poor girl's brain to process as she then became confused as to which person I needed to speak with & began to argue with me about Dr. Anderson not having listened to his messages, blah blah blah. I was cut off again as I was explaining to her the person I actually needed was Kelly and was only requesting Dr. Anderson so that I might be able to get something accomplished. Sent back to good ole Kelly's voicemail, I hung up as leaving a message is apparently pointless. I have since been calling back incessantly, hearing the same hold messages over and over again. At one point, someone picked up and actually hung up on me clear as day. You people run an extremely unprofessional business, especially seeing as how this seems to be a recurring theme which obviously has not been adequately addressed. Not treating your patients with respect and letting them run out of medication that a MEDICAL DOCTOR has prescribed to them is astounding not to mention highly dangerous. I would say it's pretty audacious for office staff members to have the kind of ego that allows them to think they possess even one iota of medical knowledge allowing them to in essence dictate when patients may get their medication. I've never experienced such in my entire life and I would imagine this kind of behavior would be embarrassing to whoever owns this establishment.

Clay Earnest

Ive tried to get an appointment twice this week. i have provided my insurance twice over the phone and never received a call back for scheduling. Something is going on in that office. I wouldnt go there

Nathan Shugart

I highly recommend no one ever stepping foot in this place. Office staff is GARBAGE!

Stephanie Clifton

Currently sitting here with several other patients who have been waiting for at least an hour to be seen. I have been a patient of Paychiatry South since 2010. They used to be awesome, until they moved. When they moved my psychiatrist left the practice, I was sent a letter? But never a confirmation. Now I am seeing another psychiatrist, great! However, I have to see a PA (I’ve never met) for half of the appointment, not even my own psychiatrist due to understaffing. I’ve been very disappointed ever since they moved.

Charlee Burgess

Dr. Jones is amazing. Only doctor I've felt comfortable around. The staff is very nice - never had an issue - even when my appts were made with the incorrect doctor. i never have to wait long to see the doctor.

Angelia Manley

The WORST patient care by far. Lack of respect toward patients, terrible beside manner and office personnel rude and tactless. If you're looking for a suicide mission, do yourself a favor and visit this office. They'll give you every reason to want to blow your brains out!

Heather McKinley

I have been looking for both a psychiatrist and a therapist for a long time. This office is an answer to prayer. I've had no problem with office staff and I've never waited more than 7 minutes. U got to remember most of the time is that if the dr is running behind its because another patient is having a particularly bad day. I'm with Dr Anderson and Heath Who both have helped me tremendously in a few short weeks. Everyone giving bad reviews.... Just remember it could always be much worst. My last psychiatrist just disappeared. Leaving 100's of patients with no where to get help. Unfortunately the stigma of mental health issues may even be prevalent with the front office staff. They should be retrained. Most ppl are nervous going in and that can't help.

Melissa

Dr. Sugg is wonderful. He has always been willing to listen to me and help me.
