worst place ever

This is by far the most unprofessional facility for mental wellness I have ever witnessed. My daughter was sent here for help, and it was only after that fact that we learned of the sickening behavior, and events that have taken place here. If you truly care for your child please do not send them there, and if they are there please for their own safety pick them up immediately. Numerous cases of abuse, sedation without reason, and many more stomach turning events. When we arrived the get our daughter the only thing that was mentioned to us was a bill we would receive... nothing on my daughters progress or anything. Your child would be safer at john wayne gacys house. That place should have been condemned long ago. Uhs is only in this for profit, not for unwell children who need help. Please, please, please do not leave your child there if you love them.

The staff is the worst they pushed me to snap

The black lady at the desk and one of the staff which was black too looked right through me as if I weren't fit to be on the same planet as them. And then instead of explaining to me that I needed a number to collect items from a patient she rudely looked at me condescendingly and asked is there anything else instead of just explaining that to me first. And there was absolutely no cordial greeting or dismissal at all no manners what so ever indicative of the area so I was not surprised at all that behavior towards whites is condoned and wide spread in the Birmingham area.

NEVER SEND ANYONE HERE THEY DON'T DESERVE IT , teens, children, adults. NO ONE. Might as well send them to prison.

All negative reviews for this facility were scrubbed by GOOGLE at the request of UHS. Do not go to any UHS facility. You have been warned

Kaley O'Neal

This is the absolute worst place. I have never been mistreated so much in my life. There were 2 women here that really helped me.. Ms. Theresa and Ms. Brandi. That’s the only good thing I experienced. The food was so gross, I ate dry cereal every day. I post 15 pounds when I was there.. It’s like jail, well 10 mines worse. You are locked up and you can barely go outside. The lunch lady called me a b**** once. It was just overall hell on earth and I would NEVER send any of my children here. It’s gave me PTSD that I will have to live with for the rest of my life.

Hillcrest Hospital has qualified social workers, counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists to meet the behavioral, emotional, and psychiatric needs of children and adolescents. They really helped my child in her time of need. I was scared to have my child admitted to the inpatient psychiatry unit at first but I am so happy I did no listen to the negative reviews. Hillcrest Hospital really helped my child during this difficult time in her life.

Deserves 0 stars. Worst experience I’ve had in my life no kidding. I’d rather go to prison for a year then stay 6 months in this place. I was on the adolescent unit for 10 days. I saw the worst of the worst. A kid that just got there said “I want to go home” and what they did was get 3 men to hold this kid down and a nurse come over and give him 2 shots in the butt right in front of everyone. And that happened at least 3 more times. Then I got a switched to another room and while I was there laying on my bed at rest period my room mate told one of the techs that I said a girl had a nice butt and that she was “fine” which never even happened and I got in trouble for it. And one day there was this really small and skinny kid he was like 13 or 14 he said something along the lines of “I want to go home this place sucks” and they asked him what he said and then he said it again and then they got 2 220lbs+ guys and a nurse to restrain him by sitting on him and giving him a shot that really messed him up he couldn’t walk and barely could talk and was drooling everywhere and the tech asked him to get up and he barely even responded and so what they did was push down his arms on the edge of a rubber sofa type thing and and one of guys pushes his arm down with so much force it snapped this kids arm with *pop* sound and they didn’t take this kid to the hospital till the next day. Another thing that happened was I had a major panic attack and all the staff did was sit and laugh at me. Another thing that happened was a kid just started punching another kid randomly in the face when he didn’t even do anything and they gave both of them shots when the one guy did absolutely nothing at all. And one of the girls a day later was just sitting in the hall scratching her arm till it was bleeding everywhere and all they did was say “quit” and walked off even tho she kept doing it. And when my doctor prescribed me medicine they didn’t even taper down which mad my jaw lock up and I couldn’t talk for like 18 hours. But there was some things that were ok Dr. con was nice Mr. Scott was good and Mr rahshi I think his name was. The food was good to but ever since then I made a choice to never ever ask for help if there is a chance of me going here. Please don’t send anyone here. It’s abusive and the techs could care less about you.

Darkness Binds

A useless waste of funds. This place is a joke even for the mental health system. Every staff member is a complete moron.

Bristol Benton

TERRIBLE STAFF, DOCTORS, PSYCHIATRIC TEAM. Was sent here for suicide attempts and because of the nature of the facility, a behavioral one, I was treated as if I had an issue with acting out. The facility was in poor condition and felt like a prison. It was cold and dark, the physical aspects and the emotional aspects. I've never wanted to kill myself more than I did being in there. The group setting meant I had to engage all day long with girls that were up to 10 years younger than me, on topics that would fit across the spectrum but really weren't what I was dealing with. It was about being nice and sitting still, being a good boy or girl because you were told to. There was absolutely no mental health aspects that would help me in the facility. I mostly colored and waited to go home. Terrible terrible place, nightmare of my life. Do not send your loved ones to this facility.

Ashley Garnett

Alabama is not a safe place to have children, it seems like they view them as just a means of income.by the way did they ever clean up that place in irondale? I know just a month ago I was watching a video titled the Alabama corruption trial where the Alabama government was trying to conceal involvement in the dumping of hazardous waste in a black community there. Alabama sounds like such an awful place to be especially for children.

Kenyana Dupree

I was admitted here a little over 20 years ago and at first I was angry and actually broke out, but by the time I was discharged my family relationships got better. I felt better emotionally. They helped me get free from the chains holding me down. I am thankful to have been there. This place saved me. My psychiatrist Tom, I believe that was his name, was excellent. Im not sure about the condition of the facility now, but back then it was very clean and things were not as these reviews have stated. I was out of control and they gave me a way to express myself without exploding. I love this place for what they did for me. And my school work stayed on honor roll. Your parents should have made sure of that. My mother made sure i had school books and assignments. Don't fault the staff for things your parents should have been on top of. The parents have to stay involved in the treatment plan. You cant just drop children off and forget them. Its treatment center to help, not to take over the duties of the parents.

Meagan Trentham

My brothers was at Hill crest an every chance the staff got to verbally an physically abuse them they did this place need to be shut down

John Rittmann

Hillcrest Behavioral Health has always been compassionate and attentive. The staff on the RISE unit is flexible to client needs. Mr. Johnson goes above and beyond when helping other professionals. The therapeutic staff provides insightful, helpful services.

I stay at this disgusting facility for a month. It was the worst month of my life. The staff are very rude and abusive. The staff cuss patients out and get attitudes with the patients. I came out of that hospital 2 times worse than when I came. I never want to go near that building again. I wish I could give it 0 stars but I can’t. The patients are out of control and there’s a fight every 30 seconds. I just wanted to leave the whole time. They put stuff in the food to make you fatter. And the medicine they put me on made my mental illnesses worse. PLEASE DONT SEND PEOPLE HERE

D.Z. Allen

These folks don't ever stick to the same rules when visiting, don't allow toddlers the things they need, even though children and toddlers should never have to go to this horrible place. The staff are rude and ignorant, they act like they all come from the hood, do they even have licenses to practice? We always dread even having to go here as the stress levels, and things you deal with just to visit are ludicrous.

Peyton’s and Rebecca’s Channel

i did not have a good experience with the inpatient care they gave my 6 yr old, they didnt care for his hygiene needs, he had on same clothes two days in a row when i visited him, no socks, no underwear, ear was draining, they didnt care, my child will NEVER go back there, but his out patient dr is wonderful

I was put in there for 3 days and it was horrible. All they wanted to do was drug me up. I needed therapy NOT drug therapy

Don't panic JustLive

I went there when I was in the 3rd grade , I am now 17, but I was admitted there for 9 days, and even to this day I remember the traumatic experiences there. I had to go there because a doctor who I saw put me on a very strong medication for anxiety and I had severe side effects and had to get off of it. I remember the staff there looked at me and told me the day before I was going home that every kid comes back at least 2 times, and that I'd be back in no time. My mom was told lies by the staff, I was mistreated, yelled at, and even punished for throwing up in the floor by accident. I was in the 3rd grade and the reason I threw up was because I was so stressed and traumatized by the things that were happening it literally drove me to become sick!! One day when I was supposed to get a visit with my mom, my mom drove and was waiting to see me and they told me I couldn't see her that she didn't come , and told her that I had done something and my privileges of a visit were revoked. I was crying in my sleep every single night and the staff claimed they came in my room and calmed me down , they told my mom that, but they never did that, they did the complete opposite, they'd open the door and told me to hush up and would slam it behind them. I remember the first day I was told my one of the staff members that you could put your shoe in the door when you were in your room so it wasn't shut all the way if you didn't like having the door shut, and every kid had done the same thing, well I heard one of the staff members telling a man that "we got a new one" he came in there poked his head in the door and yelled "your door has to be shut" and slammed it, and then walked off laughing. I barely remember what he looked like but he was tall as I remember, had a beard and I'm pretty sure had reddish hair. That place was horrible and no parent should ever take their kid there, my mother didn't know any of that would've happened and she said if she knew she would've have never taken me there. She was in shock and extremely upset after she found out everything that had happened. I was a little kid, only in the 3rd grade. Now I am 17, soon to be graduating and I'm becoming a police officer. My life is looking way up, and maybe when I become an officer I can get people like those who worked there , that abuse and mistreat PATIENTS like that, away from children. People like that do NOT need to work with children. This place does NOT help people, it messes them up even worse. I would not even take my dog there. The people who work there with people who are admitted should be ashamed of themselves and how they treat kids and patients. I've read all of these reviews and there's not even one good one here. People who treat kids that way should never be allowed around a child. EVER. That place needs to close down.

Aweful a horrible place to work they are prejudice and ghetto. A place that will set you up to get rid if you. Will document lies and put it on the kids because noone is suppose to question the kids. Will have other techs social workers and therapist join them on a crusade for you to loose your job. I know all people need a job but this one is not worth the hell you go through and if you are not good at being in clicks hillcrest in birmingham alabama is not where you want to be.

Abigail McCulloch

i was here for two weeks twice, let me tell you, this place is actually disgusting. the staff is homophobic and racist,(called me white trash and someone else the n word) (that was a white staff) the food is gross, the showers flood, there’s ants and roaches, and you can’t even see out of the windows. don’t send your child here.

Ben Richardson

Some time ago my parents bought me a digital watch w/many features. I could not have afforded myself. When I went to Hillcrest I was told I couldn't wear the watch there, It would go in a safe. I would get it back when I left. Came the day to leave. The person who told me all this said they couldn't find my watch. They said they were sorry. And that's all they said. They did not offer to replace the watch or give me the cash value so I could replace it myself. The beds are too narrow and the mattresses are extremely uncomfortable. So if they ask to hold your watch say no or leave it at home.

Alisha Brand

Brendan Turner

They do not care about their patients AT ALL. I have been written the wrong prescription twice by Dr. Munoz which has left me without the medication I need in order to function properly. Their staff shows zero concern whatsoever when I tell them that I need their help to get this medication I need for my own safety and stability. As of right now I have to wait over 11 days for my doctor to return from his vacation in order to get the correct prescription. I told them my health is at risk and they said, and I quote "my hands are tied, you will have to wait for your doctor to return from his vacation".

Don’t believe all the negative reviews about this place. The people there treated me well in my 30 day recovery. Very professional and committed to helping others who want help for themselves.

I almost died here, I was locked in a room with no bathroom, the heater was broke and they repeatedly told me the heat was just fine. Some of my personal items were "Lost" I have ptsd and this place made sure to go out of their way to harm me. My meds were never correct, so that entirely messed me up. The day I left this place is the day my life started. I can't even describe the depth of this prison. Instead of treatment for ptsd and other things, I received nothing but hate and they made sure they showed it. They don't care about anyone so please from the very depth of my heart, take your loved ones some place other than this living HELL.

Well after seeing the reviews I was nervous. I came in on time. Signed in, my appointment was at 2:30. After sitting until 4pm they called my name about a co-pay. My wallet wasn't in my purse so I asked the front if my mom can bring the $3.90. She said you won't be able to be seen if it takes too long. It took my mom 15 minutes to get there. I see the nurse laughing LOOKING AT ME. BASICALLY TELLS HER RESCHEDULE. MAYBE IF IT DIDN'T TAKE AN HOUR TO SAY YOU HAVE A CO-PAY BECAUSE BEING ON MEDICAID DISABILITY I BARELY HAVE CO-PAYMENTS. BUT TO SIT THERE THAT LONG AND BE TOLD WELL YOU CAN'T BE SEEN BECAUSE OF $3.90. AND THE NURSE LOOKS AT ME LAUGHING WHILE TALKING ABOUT ME. SCREW YOU

Horrible smells like tuna fish casserole, needs to work on more positive outlooks for the kids who do what they are suppose to by giving them more resources, the food is cooked with burnt kittens and fish grease.

I would leave a ZERO if possible. This is a horrible place for children seeking to be in a better place in life. I have mentored a young lady for over 2 years. They keep changing the password, refuse to call me back on her passes after numerous calls and voicemails. I pick her up almost every weekend. They say I’ve never been there before. I have been out of town for work for two weeks, but picked her up every weekend EXCEPT for a work conference. I requested off work to get her today. They write passes when I’m at work and refuse to write them when I request off for work. Today I was talked to like trash and not even allowed to speak with her. I call during the week and I’m not even asked for a password. This makes no sense and my heart goes out to any child that is left in the care of such heartless workers. *Came back to leave a 2nd review about another bad experience, but it has to go under the first review. I showed up to pick up the SAME child I was awarded custody of finally. I called an hour in advance to make sure she was ready. I was told she was. I waited almost 3 hours checking in on and off trying to figure out what was taking so long. I was finally told by the secretary that they FORGOT I was waiting (for 3 hours). Now this child is still there because they FORGOT I was there for 3 hours. Called me when I got home an hour and a half later (total of 5 hours) to say she was ready.....PLEASE GET YOUR CHILD SAFELY OUT OF THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. I am heartbroken for this young lady in the hands of people that can FORGET she has a home after around 12 plus years of not having one. This is a shame. AND they will NOT admit to their wrongdoings. They simply said they brought her downstairs...but forgot the total of 5 hours drive time/wait time in which I missed work to pick this young lady up. This is SAD and they need to be investigated.

When I was there the staff was abusive (at least the men) everyone had a terrible attitude. When I received a call from my mother saying she was in the hospital I was sent back to the day room in tears talk about embarrassing it seems the staff (most of them) have no human emotions to other humans. Not to mention only seeing the doctor for a 2min breif convo every week (if your lucky)

Patty Yarbrough

horrible i wouldn't put my dog here

Sharonda Marcum

I had to bring my suicidal son out here. The staff went above board to help both him and me. I would highly reccomend this place!

Grant Young

Staff were homophobic and also belittled the patients.

Ressedue

This place has the worst security ever, a child has escaped twice. Once on the roof then a week later they allowed the child on the football field and he ran through the woods down 1st Avenue in Birmingham!! They hardly treated him therapeutically and constantly were rude on the phone with his mother when she addressed these issues would not recommend the stay here. Find your kid somewhere else to go. Oh and they don’t punish these kids with anything other than making them eat a “No sweets” diet. The punishment should be relevant to the crime.

Tbh I never wanna go back here... I was so confused and I didn't get a reason for me being here but the staff are friendly but the food is 100 terrible the beds are so small,,, bathrooms are squeezed up.. I'll miss the few friends I made here but I'm glad I'm out.. They wanted to give me medication which wasn't even signed for.. I couldn't see the time I couldn't do anything it's just terrible 100% why do they convince people on taking the medication yet we don't need it... Some of the stuff are so mean and keep laughing at y'all like we crazy but we not... Tbh I don't really think it's okay to put some of our loved ones here

My son was shot up with drugs he is highly allergic to affter several attempts myself as well as my child trying to tell him he was allergic to them it could kill him and assulted by a staff member on more than one occasion the staff told me he lied about it until i was on the phone today and it happened while we were speaking ...when i called back and tried to apeak with the person in charge of the person over the rtc boys unit the operator refused to give me the information when i pressed on about the subject i was given a random counselors name instead ...looks like the staff is clicked up like a school and look outfor the people in their group after aeveral attempts i still dont know who to contact about the verbal and physical abuse my son was subject to qhile on the phone with me im super worried about my son who did nothing to recieve the treatment he just got and im worried if they give him this drug for the third time after i and my son have warned them about this medication i dont know if thats the last time ill hear my sons voice or not since they refuse to let me speak to him to make sure hes ok now.....im devestated. And worried no mother should have to go through what im feeling right now

Absolutely the worse place ! I do not recommend the mental health department at all . It’s always something with the staff .. my advice find another mental health doctor.

parker davis

I went here in September of 2014 for about 4 days. it did not help me whatsoever. they also lied to my parents about the schedule we would be on. while i was there my mom had a book that said things like at 2pm theyll be going to music class and things like that, but that wasnt true. they also told her there was a pool but thats not true either. a few of the staff were nice but most of them werent. my therapist when i was there was a white guy, dont remember his name, but he took me outside the facility to walk around a field and it was weird. dont take anyone here its falling apart and it sucks.

I work at hillcrest , ive been here for 3 years, the CEO Steve McCabe is a really nasty person, he treats staff really badly, he talks to you like you are nothing. The cafeteria was just shut down by the state because visitors saw rats and roaches crawling across the floor on more than one occasion, they remodeled the kitchen, but after about 7pm u can hear the rats crawling in the ceiling, I've witnessed a roach falling into grits and the chef picking it out then serving them, there are some good staff at Hillcrest but most of us dont really do our part because we are under paid average salary is 9.00 and not appreciated. A lot of people complain about the D.o.n. Bridget Bishop, she has a really nasty attitude, The HR lady Catherine is a mean mean old hag that tries to tell you how to do you job and she hasn't dealt with patients since Noah built the Ark. But anyway if I had a choice I would choose brook wood, st. Vincent or grand view, too many other good choices out there, then to go to the hood

This hospital needs to be shut down it's horrible

My daughter has been in Hill Crest for four days due to Bipolar & ODD and so far we just found out she has been wearing the same cloths being her suitcase was found to be empty even though we just bought her new cloths the night we brought her. She was placed in restraints within the first 12 hours she was there when asked she said she was woke up being pushed into a wall and says she has a huge bruise on her face now.The ceilings have big mold spots in the bathrooms so no telling what they look like past the locked doors Plus when we first arrived we witnessed a staff member bring the wrong child to a parent to be discharged so YES this really is a horrible place and we plan to discharge our child immediately..Please for the sake of your kids DON'T take them here!!

I see Dr Shakil Khan. Yes, there are times when he has to stop seeing appointments and take care of patients that are in the hospital side. He always apologizes for the delay. I've been a patient of his for 6yrs and he's discussed my condition and treatment options. He's very respectful to me, but he doesn't let anyone disrespect him or walk all over him either. I would definitely recommend him to anyone who has a similar condition.

My son went here they kept him 2 and a half to 3 weeks upon checking him out they lost our 200.00 suit case and told us they would check storage but couldn't find it, then said they could give us a voucher but not for the full amount of the price we paid for the bag! I think they let another patient leave with it or the staff stole it, they said they would call me tomorrow after looking for it again. I am going to call the police and report my bag stolen if they don't do what's right and give me my bag back or replace it for the full amout. On top of that they gave him a medication without my approval and he called and told me the place was full of gang members don't send your kids here!!!

Hannah harris

This is the worst place ever I was there a month and had a staff member abuse my roommate in front of me while everyone else was sleeping and not to mention it was a guy that done it she had harmed herself so I went to get a nurse and they came back with a shot and that big tall man came in our room and hit her face on the bed and kept doing it the other people had to tell him to stop the next day me and her had to talk about what had happened to a lady because we filed a report or at least we tried not to mention this place is dirty and old and the nurses are rude I wouldn’t send my worst enemy here they make patients with real mental issues sleep on the floor on their mattress with a sheet I mean the staff there is awful and they don’t help at all and we didn’t even really have group therapy...

Jane The Killer

I went to Hill Crest back in December of 2014. The building itself is disgusting. Staff treats the patients that might require special needs like they are nothing. It's not fair to the patients. Especially the adolescents who did/do not have a choice if they are there or not. I do remember the staff that helped with our adolescent group was usually nice. Except for Mr. Damiyan and a nurse who and I quote said "hey you in the red jacket turn around and shut up!". There was also a fight at the facility in the cafeteria. Do I think that Hill Crest is a horrible place to be? Yes! I agree 100%

Sheldon Sturgell

I was once resident here for over a year in rtc boys back when I was here it was still crazy but they had some figures there that I felt did help and they did try to help and those staff are mr Fred mr rob momma marry ans mr Clarence and mr Gary they truly saw passed a troubled child and tried to help me so to you guys I thank but other staff such as me Hubert and Chris and Darryl the loved to put there hand on me cause I was part white and Mexican and they like calling me racist names so one day after I seen mr Hubert beating up my little friend Chris slay I ran up punched and said a very mean thing back and then they all choose to attack me for sticking up for him and then they tried saying I was racist they broke my arm and did nothing it healed werid and that's why I was revised and they gave my grandma a check if they she wouldn't take them to court for a lot of cash but from what I see it's only gotten worse and the people that do care arnt there anymore or have no control over what happens cause the do like to threaten you with your job and all kinds of stuff so I would think about it before sending your family and love ones here and if some of the staff still work here see this I hope you get back what you did to all them kids and adults and to the people who did help me and other people thank you for your services you guys are great and I want to thank you for the time you guys gave me and truly took to help me and to the one who beat on me and everything else bet you won't na cause I'm 6'6 285 so mr rob better watch your ps and as cause I'm bigger you now boy frfr

I must inform people of this deceiving place. I came here to get help, which I did not get. They write prescription meds to anyone who says they need them, can't sleep etc. I spent 8 days here and it was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. It did more phsycogical damage to me than I can write into words. No one deserves to be sent here against their will.

Resource: EXPERIENCE I really feel this place should be closed down! I was on c-team. A sexual abuse unit in the hospital. Some of the staff were very helpful like Ms. Yulanda & Ms. Tameka. Other than that, the food is disgusting. They have hair in their food & very unsanitary. The food condiments were always sticky and stuck together or old looking. The restraints are just terrible. I was restrained maybe 3 times in the 8 months I was there, that’s just me though. I seen someone get restrained EVERY DAY. One of the girls I was close with actually got pushed down to the concrete and the staff had busted a blood socket in her left eye and left her bruised up! She had scrubs on and only panties. They had tore up her paper scrubs from dragging her on the concrete. I’m sorry but that is WAYYY over the line. They treat you like trash, and that incident has scarred me. Hillcrest changed me. Not for the better, but worst. They act like just because they give you outings and home passes that your stay will be great, but no. You lose your levels over stuff like dating people, sharing stuff, EVEN giving somebody something that they might need (hygiene products, shampoo, etc. ) in the facility, WE ARE TEENAGERS. We can’t help who we like!! This stay was terrible. I got put on precautions bc of how I felt! But truth be told, staff push you until you blow up then want to jump on you. I hate this place. And I’m sure I can speak for anyone. Thumbs down ALL the way.

Christine Roof

I think they really helped my son .

Zoe Duncan

Abusive staff, you sit in a room for 14 hours a day, no exercise, they make you easy excessive amounts of food, building is falling apart, therapists are abusive (especially Bernie Johnson) and the staff steals all of the valuables from the patients. It's also in the middle of a ghetto, you can hear gunshots and sirens at night and all of the nurses are idiots. The building is also falling apart and they refuse to do anything about it. It is in violation of several federal regulations concerning health and incarceration (even though it's not a prison, although it's worse than one) and leaving someone in a jail cell will do them more good than this place will. You know those horror stories about places like Penhurst Asylum and other mental hospitals in the early 1900s? This is the living embodiment of that.
