When diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma I was terrified and confused. I felt like I was on a freight train heading for a washed out bridge. Somehow I had to get control before I crashed into the darkness below! I found myself calling back original bearer of the horrible news to seek out the names of the surgeons who might be working on me through their hospital system. After researching them, and discovering all were general surgeons, I decided to check out my options.
Taking charge I called my insurance and, armed with a list of dedicated breast cancer surgeons in NWA who were covered by my insurance, I turned to the net! After reading about all of them, I called and made an appointment with Dr. Christopher Menendez. His office got me in for my first appointment in only two days (four days sooner then my original appointment with a general surgeon was to be).
I never looked back! I'd called and gotten my original results from the first place to take to my appointment, but I need not have bothered. Dr. Mendendez had my records in hand when he walked in the door. After introducing himself he went right to work explaining all that I needed to hear in a way I really needed to hear it. I was so relieved to know I was in the right place, I had my first good cry.
Thankfully my Cancer was caught early and I was able to have it taken care of by only having partial breast surgery (lumpectomy) followed up with radiation using the Bracytherapy (Savvy) procedure. Dr. Menendez was so wonderful leading me through the surgery as well as the placement of the Savvy device. He then handed me off to the equally wonderful Dr. Hershey Gardner (Highlands Oncology Group Radiologist) to handle the radiation treatments. Radiation from start to finish took only 9 days (there was a weekend in there), as opposed to the 5 weeks of daily treatments using the more common whole breast radiation procedure. I highly recommend the Savvy procedure if you are a candidate for it.
Through this whole harrowing journey I don't believe couldn't have found a better medical team team to guide me then Breast Cancer Surgeon, Dr. Chris Menendez (with no small support from Janina..his aide de camp) and the equally impressive Radiation Oncologist , Dr. Hershey Gardner, and his Savvy staff, and my Oncology Dr. (Recommended by Dr. Gardner), Dr. Brook Brander (she's terrific and very sweet!). Thank you all for a job very well done!
