My university used Thorton Studios as their graduation photographer. Taking the pictures were free, but you end up paying for it on the purchasing end. The cost of the portrait packages were ridiculously expensive, and you could only choose ONE portrait. This was not practical , especially for a doctoral graduation photo session when you have different poses with gown, cap and gown, and no gown. Also we are in a digital age where I think most of us would want our pictures digitally than a hard copy to send to friends, family and to keep copy for ourselves. It was at least $200 to own the digital rights to the photos. Honestly If it were not for my parents insisting they wanted the photographs, and were willing to pay for them, I would have passed on them because of the price. It seems at graduation everyone is trying to rip you off, from the school bookstore selling you cap and gown, to photographers like Thorton. I ended up purchasing single pictures for around $40 each. Now after I ordered, it said 4-6 weeks delivery. I ordered my photos in June, and graduation was in May. It took them 2 months to deliver 3 photos to me. The worst was that one of my photos, I had a huge acne scar on the forehead that did not look obvious from the small squares photo samples they send you in the mail, but when it was blown up to a 8 x 10 it was very obvious. I know that they offer photo touch ups for an extra fee (of course they want to make more money), but honestly, I felt that after developing the photo anyone with an obvious business conscience could have just retouched the photo for free as a courtesy, especially for a once in lifetime photo. Not a very happy customer.

I had the most wonderful experience with Thornton Studio and the high quality prints I received. I needed to have my headshot taken to send to an agency as quickly as possible so I phoned Thornton Studio and they accommodated me the very same day. The studio was very busy when I arrived but I had a very short wait. The photographer asked me about the purpose of my headshot and I told him it was for a particular talent agency. He was so knowledgable about the specifics the agencies look for and he really captured my personality in the photos. In addition to making my session enjoyable, he also included a few poses with my son who was with me. I love the headshot photos and I simply adore the photos of my son and me! Such a nice bonus that I didn’t expect when I left the apartment that morning. I’ll sum things up by saying my experience with Thornton Studio was absolutely fantastic and the turnaround time for my photos was not only fast, but the photos were also very tastefully Photoshopped to remove a small blemish on my face. I highly recommend Thornton Studio and their staff of professionals to anyone who wants an exceptional headshot or other photo related service. Thornton’s 50 years of experience certainly shows!

The worst place ever, John Jay College can do better. It takes forever to get a single picture. I am not asking to do anything special in the picture, just remove their logo and send it to me. Why is that so hard? Unacceptable.

My college used this company back in 2010 to photograph our graduation. They have since switched to a different company and for good reason. Due to flooding I lost the prints from my graduation. When I contacted the company I was informed that too much time had passed and they no longer have those images. In the age of digital imaging, when capturing important moments in peoples life is your only business, what photo studio does not keep prints for more then three years??

AWFUL experience - While the ladies working in the studio were nice, the male photographer was EXTREMELY rude and condescending. He yelled at me when asking if it was possible to take a photo in a different size and spoke to me like an ignorant child. I would never give this place a dollar.

I have been contacting this business for weeks regarding my graduation pictures, which were taken in February. I purchased my photos about one month later and I have yet to receive them. I left voice messages, sent emails, and have not received any responses. This company is very unprofessional. Do you mean to tell me I have to inconveniently visit the studio in person to obtain pictures that I paid for 5 months ago??? Unbelievable. If your school is using this company for your senior pictures, do not waste your time and money.. you just may receive another degree before you get your photos in the mail.

This company charged a stolen credit card and after an hour of dispute with a rude and disrespectful manager, who claimed his first and last name was "Carpenter," nothing was resolved. Did not take a name on the credit card --only the numbers when charging for "senior photos" from some weird college. Awful customer service and clearly allows for illegal activity.

This place is a joke for passport photos. 30 minute wait for them to develop, and then they didn't even bother to cut them to size, making the photos useless. Avoid.

They don’t respond emails, customer service is horrible. Only I asked was take off their logo for ONE picture, to download it, in their website there is not an option to order only one picture, you have to pay for the whole album the cost is $198, and it’s only the digital download. I don’t want all the album, I don’t like all the 12 pictures, that’s why I’m only ordering one, the cost is $29.99 same only digital download. But I’m not getting any email back.

Horrible customer service, and the pictures aren't great either. They dont commit to the time you discussed, rush you through pictures (5min/pp), and to buy the pictures is either like $40-50 per picture, or $100-300 per package with a few pictures. Some of the people on the phone are super nasty too, I hate the fact that my school has a contract with this awful studio.

It's a scam. Someone from the Yonkers Board of Ed must be getting a kickback to even use this business. Even if this is the company that took your child's pics in School, DO NOT, use this service and just get the Senior pics done professionally from a different company. Save yourself the time, money and aggravation and stay as far away from this company as you can. $200 and absolutely nothing to show for it. Downloaded pics that came so compressed can't even make 8x10's and now running through hopes to get the original larger file sizes.

THE WORST! DON'T BOTHER CALLING because they don't care that you don't like your pictures and won't help ease your frustration, also they are going to be nonchalant and have smart remarks after everything you say. I got my proofs in the mail and realized they only gave me only 10 poses when the maximum is 12, they didn't have my school logo in the background and they didn't give me a double exposure picture. OTHER STUDENTS IN MY SCHOOL GOT IT ALL. When I called they told me well u should've asked how many pics, oh your school didnt have the logo for the background that day and the last excuse was oh we just didnt give u a double exposure pic. SMDH !!!! All they offered was to retake it BUT WHO HAS TIME TO RETAKE ? AND I DON'T WANT ANYTHING ELSE TO DO WITH THIS STUDIO AGAIN. I feel they don't deserve my money but I have no choice since I would like to have grad pictures. THE PHOTOGRAPHERS SHOULD SPECIFY THE DAY TAKING PICTURES THAT THEY U WILL NOT BE GIVEN THE SAME PROOFS AS OTHER NOT HAVE US FIND OUT IN THE MAIL #1 PICS MISSING #2 NO DOUBLE EXPOSURE PIC, #3 NO SCHOOL LOGO FOR BACKGROUND. The pictures that were taken came out awfully and the photographers forced an unnatural smile. The retakes came out even worse and had limited options for backgrounds. Finally when I wanted to look back at the original prints, I couldn't because I had done a retake.

My college used this studio for commencement photos. I placed an online order 2 months ago. The money has been taken from my account but I have neither received the photos nor does anybody answer the phone or emails. This place really sucks. Why ever does my college work woth such unprofessional and unreliable people? Just stay away from this studio.

I made an appointment for graduation pictures. The first date filled up so when they added new appointments, I jumped at the chance to make one. I arrived on time and was lucky that another person waiting could tell me I had to register myself at a laptop. There was one photographer there and about 20 people waiting ahead of me who were mostly walk ins. Appointments were not being honored and it was first come first served. When I asked I was told “sorry I’m not the head photographer”. After waiting 40 minutes, I walked out. I couldn’t even get my picture taken. I would rather go get my friend to take my picture. No way I was giving this unprofessional company money for making me wait so long when I had left work early for an appointment. So extremely disappointing!

The quality of the photos were good but the customer service is horrible. I sent three E-mails trying to clarify something on my order. I did not receive a reply because apparently they need a week to reply to an Email. I then called and the woman that answered the phone (I assume it was the receptionist) was rude. The next person I spoke to did not even sound like he was interested in doing his job. Very disappointed with the customer service I received.

FIND SOME WHERE ELSE my school decided to use them for senior pictures. the management SUCKS. if you go to the office the first answer to your question is I dont know. they havent printed my prom pictures that I paid for. STAY AWAY from this company if you want a photo in a reasonable time.the the customer service is disgusting and completely unprofessional. If you need to take a photo better luck taking a selfie

I had two photographers taking my college senior portrait. The first one wasn't even enthusiastic of taking the photo in the first place and had no idea which type of gown I should wear or what collar to wear for the photo. The zipper of the gown shines in every photo. The second guy was a little more pleasant but the photos came out terribly, my hands were half cut, the lighting was way off point, he zipper again shone, I wasn't advised of my hair doing its own thing, and some photos were taken when I wasn't ready and still put online for me to order...why? He was nice though, so the one star is for him alone. The pricing is ridiculous, $50 for two 5x7 photos??? No thank you. Thieves.

Classic studio portraits are offered at this spacious Manhattan storefront. Thornton's is also a full services lab for photographers, with tradition dip and dunk processing to high-end digital photofinishing - all at bargain prices. A definite asset to Chelsea.
