After going there two weeks in a row with a high fever and terrible cough they sent me home with cough drops both times and charged me $150. Went to a different clinic and found out a had pneumonia and almost was out in the hospital. Don’t go to this place.

DD went to SHC Tuesday after suffering shortness of breath. Dr. Hunter noticed heart rate was high, didn’t attribute it to just being sick, and ordered an EKG. DD was in AFIB and she caught it. Not only that, she called and checked on DD twice while she was at UAB getting shocked back into rhythm. Dr. Hunter went above and beyond and that does WONDERS for this mom’s peace of mind!!!

In 2014, I got very bad high blood pressure and want a medical withdraw. But they told me no withdraw because hypertension is not a big deal.

The staff here really do care; they are great about responding to calls and questions. I have had great experiences with all the doctors and nurses. I recommend going either early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid long waits. Also, use the patient portal--doctors and nurses respond quickly (same day in my experience) and can sometimes offer new treatments through the portal, which saves you from having to go back and wait to be seen again.

Sarah

The pharmacy has always been quick at getting prescriptions filled and able to answer my questions.

Terry Parish

Fast and friendly. Felt like a regular doctors office with some added convenience considering they have a pharmacy in the building. I have no idea why people have given such negative reviews but as far as I am concerned they have excellent service.

Patrick Hampton

The people are nice enough, but I never feel like they really know what they're doing. They act like they just want to prescribe me something and get me out of there. The worst part is that with my student insurance, i have to go there or the insurance doesn't pay. If it's summer break or a UA holiday - well, better not get sick.

Saw Dr. Joseph today. She’s great. Listened to me and sent an Rx over to the pharmacy in the lobby. They had it out in less than five minutes. Always easy at this pharmacy and the people who work here are courteous. I used to be a pharm tech and know how difficult that can be sometimes.

Tried to get in touch with them multiple times through phone on multiple different occasions and can't even get an answer, Patient Portal is worthless, need a change in management or something.

One of the best experiences I've had with a Doctor. Seemed to really know what he was talking about and didn't explain it to me like I was dumb.

Honestly, I would stay away from this place and go to a walk-in clinic instead. They are extremely unprofessional. I had a deep open wound on my foot and had to get an X-Ray. The X-Ray technician didn't have anything to show that it was my right foot on the X-Ray, so instead she puts a DIRTY paperclip on my foot next to an open wound. Not only that, but she kept poking at it as well with the paperclip. My foot needed stitches at the time, but they failed to do that. Almost three weeks later and my wound is still split open. Save yourself the time and money and dont go here.

If you’re going to use the SHC, I recommend 1 making an appointment to decrease wait time and 2 to make the appointment with Dr. Hunter. She’s so knowledgeable, understanding and easy to talk to. I prefer her over my doctor from home that I’ve been seeing since I was an infant. She and Dr. Joseph are my two favorite doctors at the SHC and are willing to talk through your symptoms and truly listen to your concerns to find the best care plan for each issue you have.

Waste of time. I would think because it is connected with the university it would be a great place to go. I went in for an exam that I have gotten for years so I know the procedures and I left feeling like nothing was done. Go to the Tuscaloosa health department or a walk in clinic instead.

It does no good to try to call and make an appointment because no one ever answers, but if you don't already have an appointment when you walk in you can sit there for up to three hours. Not an overexaggeration, my family and I have sat in their waiting room for hours. My mother was actually *hung up on* once after hours on the phone trying to get in contact with someone. When I was seven years old, I went into this very clinic multiple times with "strep throat" and they couldn't tell me, after looking at my pus-covered, golf ball tonsils many times, that I had tonsillitis. Recently I went in with concerns of scoliosis, and the person they sent in didn't even bring the tool to check the curvature of my spine, which IS starting to curve. Another time when a nurse was checking my hearing in the box thing they have, she didn't shut the door, so of course I couldn't hear anything and I had to shut the door myself. They switched my brothers and I to the Fayette clinic and didn't inform my mother, resulting in her being charged for bringing her child to this clinic. We still are in the seemingly neverending process of getting switched back to the Tuscaloosa clinic. It's not worth anyone's time to go here, find a walk in clinic or something.

Often misdiagnosis, and the lady running the "appointment hotline" has never answered a phone call in my 4 years of school here. Honestly, not even once, and I've tried 100+ times over the past 2 years at all different times of days. It's infuriating.

Go somewhere else. You have a better chance of getting misdiagnosed or sick with something different from someone in the waiting room than actually getting help.

The staff are always respectful and helpful. They listened to my concerns and addressed my questions. Plus the pharmacy on site is quick and convenient.

I would honestly give this place -10 stars because that's how horrible my experiences have been in the past 3 years of being a student. They have misdiagnosed me many times causing me to have to go to another urgent care center and spend more money on medicine. At least their medicine works, the UA student health center is a joke of a health center that does not know how to properly treat students. I went in last week for sore throat pains. I've had strep many times before and I was very certain it was strep again. There was even white pus ( sorry) all over my tonsils. I told the doctor all of my symptoms. I also had a minor cough so I informed him of that as well. He proceeded to prescribe me everything for a minor cough. Decongestant pills, throat lasagnes, promethazine syrup, the whole 9 yards. Nothing for my throat, the main reason I went in. After looking at my prescription sheets I asked him what will help my throat? You didn't prescribe me any antibiotics. He looked at me like I was completely DUMB. He told me it should help. So I said whatever and filled the medicine. Took it for 3 days with no change. My throat has progressively gotten worse with white pus spots all over my entire throat. I'm currently typing this review on my second hour of waiting in the Northport emergency room. Roll tide.

Arrogant doctors and horrible service. They also like to treat you like an idiot.

These people truly do not know what they’re doing, nor do I think they care. I have a terrible experience everytime I go. I have a few health conditions and when I go to be seen for things like the flu or pneumonia they do not listen to my needs. They even googled one of my chronic illnesses right in front of me. Save your time and go somewhere else.

Jocelyn Hurst

Matthew Petry

The SHC deserves a better rating than they have on here. I guess only the upset people post reviews. On my first visit today, they were fast (relative to other clinics), professional, and it was an easy experience. It's also convenient that there's a pharmacy already there.

It depends on the doctor or nurse practitioner you get to see and which nurse is working with them that day. I worked there several years ago and some were awesome but others were just there for the pension plan, or so it seemed. The nurse practitioners were always great and emphasized the importance of women's health and they were also what I would consider teachers in that area. If I were a student and had access to them, I'd choose to see one of them rather than any other GYN Dr. They do (or did) have strict protocols on how to treat certain conditions and adhere to that for the most part. Most diagnoses get a referral to a specialist so other than women's health or something minor, I wouldn't expect any aggressive treatments for major conditions.

Went in for a referral to get my tonsils removed. Ended up leaving an hour and a half later with a diagnosis for mono which later proved negative. It's been a week since my visit to the Student Health Center and they still can't give me a diagnosis. My symptoms have only gotten worse since my visit as well. Will never go back to the SHC again.

Brad Lawrence

Good place to go for a cold or the flu. But doctors change just about every year and it's difficult to develop a a good relationship. Most recently I visited and was treated like I was trying to scam drugs, even though i had be getting the same medications from the UMC for a few years. Dr. Gates was very unprofessional refusing to even provide me with chantix to assist me with quiting smoking. After accusing me of trying to scam pills and saying that i wasn't really trying to quit smoking she stood up and RAN out of the room. I had to get a nurse to find her and get her back in the room to give me copies of test I had asked her to run so that I could find another doctor. Place is fine for routine seasonal ailments, not suggested if you need to develop a rapport with a doctor.

jhuds4 .

Awful. I've been here many times and been prescribed an entire pharmacy of things that didn't help me one bit. I went there three days ago and got tested for the flu and it came back negative. Went to a doc in the box today and tested positive for the flu. Thanks to them I have suffered from the flu three days too long. The doctors don't know what they're doing so they just prescribe you something and send you on your way. Don't waste your time by coming here.

Julie Jackson

Super convenient and fast

If you are trying to set up follow up appointments in any capacity, good luck is all I can say. Bad customer service is one thing, but the people that are in charge of a health care facility should not be as difficult to deal with as those at this institution. When you take up a job that stands as a portal for someone's physical and mental health, it is time to put on your big kid pants and learn some modicum of patience.

I went there and not only did it take forever to get a room to see the doctor, the doctor never took me seriously and refused to give me a test for mono "because it was too painful". They gave me only throat lozenges and send me on my way and charged me like $50. Then, I went to an actual doctor and they gave me the mono test (which was only getting blood drawn) and I tested positive. Would succumb to any illness before stepping foot in there again.

Had an allergic reaction to my prescribed antibiotics. Called the dr as instructed by pharmacy. Left multiple messages and was told I would get a call from the doctor, Who never managed to get back to me. Had to go to urgent care instead to get new antibiotics

if you like being misdiagnosed this is your place!

I’m currently still sitting in the Student Health Center because the nurse practitioner insists I wait on my blood work. Having an unfortunately extensive experience with doctor’s offices, I know it’s considerate, if not customary, for a doctor to let you leave and call you with blood results later. I came in with symptoms of dizziness, nausea, and fainting. After taking bloodwork and doing an EKG in half an hour, which the kind nurses did flawlessly as far as I could tell, The staff told me to wait for the nurse practitioner to come back in to speak with me. Little did I know they meant in two hours when the bloodwork results come through. Due to midterms, I have not been able to eat since 8am, and it’s currently almost 5pm. So the logical thing to do when a patient has issues with dizziness and fainting is to prevent her from access to food and water, right? It appears that’s what the Student Health Center deems appropriate. Sorry, kids. You’re better off elsewhere.
