I signed up with Senate Termite in 2000. I paid somewhere around $3000 to have them place down termite traps and got the $100,000 damage insurance. It was my understanding that I would need to pay $100 every quarter and my protection would continue as long as I owned my home. In 2008, Senate came back and told me the traps I had down needed to be replaced and I needed to pay another $3000+ for this. I was super frustrated and got the salesman to insure that this was the last time they would come back to me for more money and that I would just pay my $100 a quarter going forward. Well... Senate just came back and let me know that I needed another liquid treatment applied for around another $3000 if I wanted to keep my $100,000 damage insurance. I am canceling my contract with them and will shop around. I suggested to Senate that they work with their salespeople to be clear about expected costs with future customers. If you plan to have your house for 10 years or less, I think Senate would be fine since they won't likely come back to ask for more money. I would not recommend signing up with them unless you feel they are very clear about expected future costs. I could go on and on about my frustration with how their story changed in my eyes over time. First it was the traps had to be replaced and paid for again. Now it is the liquid must be reapplied or my insurance lapses. I always felt good about using a local company instead of a National chain, but I can't recommend them.

Overall bad experience with Senate. Some of it is our own fault, because you should never sign something without reading it, but on their last visit, they came and did something, and presented some papers to sign like they always do. Only instead of it being our regular service, suddenly next thing you know, 2 of our credit cards are being charged the first $800+ installment on some $2800 service that we agreed to! As the company noted when we asked, we signed for it so we have to pay it. I imagine they actually did whatever the service was, so i can't say it was scam, but we never in a million years would have signed up for such an unimaginably expensive service---especially when they always report we have no issues! Obviously, we will never use them again, and would highly recommend that if you do, you read every word very, very carefully. Their scheduling was also a consistent problem, but nothing compared to the financial disaster that doing business with senate has caused.

Initially picked Senate because they were immediately available. However, once we met with their representative, we were most satisfied and felt no need to contact any of the others (only one of them, Affordable, bothered to contact us). Kris met with us on the day we put the request in to Home Advisor. He was extremely knowledgeable, professional and helpful. Set up appointment for the next day. Craig arrived right on time. He was also very knowledgeable and professional. Treatment was thorough and efficiently carried out. Seems to have solved the problem of the wasps; found a couple dead ones and haven't seen any more live ones. Bought the termite warranty as well and as a result will be saving the $300 fee for the certification document required when we sell our home next fall. About a week or so after the initial treatment came across another live wasp. Called Senate, and true to their warranty immediately scheduled a retreatment at no cost, no questions asked. This company is first-rate and really knows how to run a service business.

For each of the last three times employees came to treat our property, they have either shown up completely unannounced or at a time not agreed upon. This occurred even after we called them and explained the situation. We wanted to cancel our service, but we cannot until the contract ends in November. When we called them today, “Nick” was completely rude and even challenged my husband to go to the office and try to cancel face to face. That sounded like a threat to me. We were told “Nick” was the VP, President, and Owner, so we don’t actually know who he is. We will NEVER use their services again. Update: Based on the reply from the owner, I feel the need to update my review. The tech arrived at 12:56. We have a timestamp to confirm his arrival. That is not the 1:10 that the owner stated in his reply. This was not the first time the techs showed up at a time that was inconvenient for us. We could not be home to have the tech treat our property. When we called and explained that this was not the first time and we were tired of dealing with this problem, we wanted to cancel. The owner told us we could not cancel over the phone, it had to be in writing, and we were going to be charged for the services anyway. The owner's response to my original review says that he stopped our services based on our request, but that is a bold faced lie. We were charged $90 (which has already been taken out of our bank account) and the tech left comments that said "Treated front and left service ticket as per Nick's instructions." So not only did the owner lie about stopping our service, he charged us the full quarterly amount without providing the full quarterly service.

They stand by their work, & guarantee 1 or 2 repeat services if needed, within their 3-month window from your 1st treatment. Well, we had a complicated situation in our home, and thought we had bedbugs. But it was determined that fleas were actually a bigger problem, so they treated for fleas. That was quite a relief, no more bites on our ankles! :{ Then bedbugs seemed to appear, so when I called them back, they gladly came back and did a completely different treatment for the bedbugs - without extra charge!! I could not believe it! They were SO customer service oriented, they were there to SOLVE my problems & create a Pest-FREE home for us again. Plus - the guys that came and did the work were very competent, and also personally CARED about helping us as their own customer. They spent time discussing our issues, making sure to get the right solution. First we had Sean, then we had Matt & Craig. And over the phone, Nick & Maria & Gabriel were most helpful. I was in town visiting my sister in Fairfax when she had Craig from Senate Termite and Pest Control come over and inspect her home. He gave us a step by step description of what he was doing and gave us tips on what to look out for. Because of his honestly and willingness to not only help but educate us as well my sister signed up for their pest control program. I called Senate Pest Control during the weekend after hearing something scratching around in the crawl space above the ceiling. Kris was sent out Monday morning and set a trap in the crawl space and put bait stations outside. On Thursday night when we came home at about 2am, the little creature clearly had died because we smelled it. We contacted the company & Kris came out right away that morning and removed it. I am an out of state landlord and it frustrates me when contractors attempt to take advantage because I'm not there to see what's going on. Therefore, I always get more than one quote for services. Anyway, I was contacted by Senate Termite & Pest Control because I requested their free estimate; John Gray, the representative, came the same day and did an initial inspection. Although he was very pushy with his sales pitch, I told him that I would probably go with the one time trapping service for $345.00 and subscribe to the $90.00 quarterly subscription service that he recommended. However, I told him that there was another company coming by and that as a courtesy, I would at least hear their proposal. At this point, John became very rude and unprofessional by stating "I thought you wanted to get rid of the mice!" He went on to say "I can't believe you had me to drive all the way out here, you've got to be kidding me!", then abruptly hung up the phone. By the way, the gentleman from the other company (named same as a grocery store in the area) came that same evening, stated the immaculate condition in which the tenants were maintaining the property and that there was no need for a subscription; as he saw exactly the point where the mice were entering the house. He sealed the entrance, baited the mice inside and outside and guaranteed his work for six months for $295.00. That's a $230.00 savings by simply comparing quotes.

I originally heard of Senate in MD. They were polite and whenever I had a problem they got it taken care of quickly. BUT the VA office goes above and beyond, which is what made me want to write a review. Not only are they polite, but they make you feel like they really care. Like they want to get rid of my mice problem cause they hate the idea of me having mice, not just because its their job. The weather wasnt great when the service guy came out to our house but instead of complaining he was cheerful and got right to work, These guys are really great. Everyone should call Senate for your bug and critter needs!

I've had you for insect control before, and you've always been good. I've dealt mostly with Erik and Chris, who've both been very helpful. Last year when I saw the rat droppings, you came right out, which I really appreciate, and I agreed to a year of rat control. During that year, I saw a rat in the backyard. After I called, you came out to re-bait the bait stations, which were completely empty of all bait. I had expected you to re-bait the traps periodically, so was disappointed to see the rat and find the bait stations empty. You did come out quickly, though, when I called.

The service was good and prompt. I didn't have any pest issues to begin with, I just wanted preventative care, so I cannot say if it is working or not as there really wasn't a problem to start. However I found the "inspection" that they say must come prior to any service to be pointless, unnecessary and if anything, only drives up the overall cost of the service. While I greatly appreciate the opportunity to learn about what the company can do for me, it is something I can easily do online by reading the "about us" section of their website. The person who came to my home was professional and cognizant of me being under time constraints; however it is not an inspection, just a sales pitch. I would rate five stars but didn't appreciate being told I needed an inspection and couldn't get a ball park quote over the phone - only to have someone come to my home to say the company has a flat rate of $$$ per treatment, the first of which is double the cost of the rest (again, probably because of the cost to have this "inspection" done). Get rid of the inspection and you'll have five stars.
