Nice museum that we all have to pay for now. The park itself isn't much but is well maintained. It's a nice place to go at night to shine for deer, "to watch only and nothing else".

Pyramids in Wisconsin!! Heard about this a few years ago and I am so glad we went. Most people I talk to are not aware of the history here. Great little State Park to walk around and explore. Our kids loved it and rated it as one of their favorite places to date. We also had a picnic lunch...be ready to pack out your garbage. The visitor center was open. Enthusiastic staff willing to answer questions. Cash only purchases. Definitely worth the time to go check it out!!

Really cool if you download the MP3 from the state park web page. It takes you on a walking tour.

Sandy Schlaudecker

Historic area. Stream and hiking trails available. Think you could launch a kayak from the banks, though not sure. There are wooden structures resembling what the native Americans constructed hundreds of years ago. Rest rooms available.

josepj digiboys1@hotmail.com

Its still a work in progress but love the history if you love history you need to at least check it out!

Korey Thomas

I went to Cahokia Mounds (misspelled in Aztalan brochure) earlier in the year. Feeling the connection of this great Mississippian civilization here is awesome. Park should be open at night, since most of the structures there correlate to the stars...

As indigenous people, the one thing my husband & I would like to see at this spot would be a Spiritual Marker, telling people to be respectful around the burial mounds. Even though there are some overgrown stairs on the main large burial mound, people really shouldn't be walking all over it, or the smaller mounds. Walking on top of the lookout mound is one thing... but walking over a burial site is pretty disrespectful & while we were there, we saw LOTS of Non-Native people walking all over that mound. All that being said, this is a great site. Really well preserved & educational. I highly recommend it. But please be respectful of Native Ancestors.

I love to visit and ponder this ancient cosmopolitan city, which brought together the Cahokian people from the south with the Woodland people of Wisconsin. We have a lot to learn and respect from this beautiful place.

One of the smaller state parks. Not as built up as some. But, that makes for a more peaceful hiking experience. Be sure to read the signs about the areas history.

Beautiful area with information plaques throughout your walk around the park.

Great varied trails: for pups and non-pup owners, grassy or paved, through trees or clearings, Crawfish river or middle of grassy meadow. Bring poop bags and please keep it clean! Lots of history here!! Wish there was area for pups to run free a bit though. I understand why not though. ;)

Beautiful place to visit

Sky LaCombe

It was a really nice place to walk around and learn about. Saw a couple of cranes while being there, as well as plenty of fish splashing in the water! Do recommend going there with family just to do something.

Medieval Wisconsin=Aztec Pyramids? I'm glad I did a little research about the site's history before I went. It prepared me to realized what I was looking at. It was facinating to be able to walk around a dozen conical Native American mounds and then go into an ancient city with partially reconstruced stockade. You don't have to go to Egpyt to see pyramids, you can do that in Wisconsin! There are two mostly restored two-tier ziggurats you can walk up on on stairs and another minor pyramid which still gives a good view. Located along the Crawfish River, you'll be able to see and hear a lot of the local wildlife at Aztalan.

One of a kind. Wonder if people in the future will observe our comparatively super primitive culture, coming to the last of our places still standing the same way.

Really lame idea for a park. First the white men, for whatever reason, tear down a huge Indian mound. Then they try to rebuild it exactly how it was using their earth moving machines. This would be like tearing down the Sistine Chapel only to replace it with a small wooden shack. And then there is a fence, like 20 feet long, which is supposed to show that there was a longer one that surrounded the place. Why not build one that would surround to really show what it looked like? And to top it all off, the place is mis-named because the white discoverer mistakingly thought it was the Aztec people from Mexico that lived there when it was a whole different tribe which is a slap in the face to them! So if you don't mind big and open boring spaces with not much to really see and a place that has been desecrated by white men, then this park is for you!

An interesting archeological site with many highly informative historical plaques and diagrams describing Native American life before 12th century. Several platform mounds. Nice riverside walks

Marilyn Gill

I remember going there in the mid-60s. I can only remember the mounds. They are still quite big, even though I am an adult. The cabins of pioneers living in the 19th century are very interesting. I learned about the Moravian church which was and still is popular in this area.

Andrew Parker

First time here and it's a quiet place to walk. Really enjoyed the history here as well.

I was unaware i had to pay to go here. That took up a chunk of time since i had no cash on me.

Iam Ghost

Beautiful yet mysterious place.

Jill Heczko

We didn't get to explore as much as we wanted because my daughter got sick. What we did see was pretty cool. We stopped at the Visitor's Center, which is temporarily in a trailer. The volunteer was very enthusiastic an knowledgeable. The video was very good. It is fairly easy to get to the reconstructed village. I wish the signage was a little better, but it wasn't bad.

Krista Narlock

Such a beautiful and peaceful place to spend a warm day at! I could spend all day just sitting in the sun here!

g k

Amazing to think there was a time well before the current occupants that this was the site of a highly sophisticated, urbane culture based on environmental preservation, open borders, and religious tolerance.

Ben Cedarberg

Very cool UNESCO ancient historical site. Limited hiking and walking around the historical Village site and some picnic tables and grills. Excellent informational plaques for a self-guided tour through the site. There is a manual water pump and and clean pit toilets. Good parking lots. Definitely worth a stop and interesting for the whole family.

Beautiful archaeological site We've had a aztec ceremony there two years ago and the year after that Lovely place and great energy

Cade Gentry

The mounds make this park one of the most unique in the area. The trails are fantastic and the views are amazing!

Deanna Herald

It was interesting to see the restored stockade and mounds. I look forward to when the interpretive signs are reinstalled. My children enjoyed mucking and squelching around the river shore, and the shoeless route to the pump to wash off was not too long. We loved seeing the butterflies enjoy the prairie, eating fire cherries, and a short walk.

Matthew Roe

Good place for an easy hike with prairie, forest, and cool pyramid mounds.

Kevin Conley

Jackie LaVaque

Very interesting place, smaller than I had expected. You can see why the natives wanted a village here. This is worth a drive if you're near Madison.

They JUST finished putting up amazing educational signage as we arrived. This beautiful spot has a wonderful spiritual feeling throughout it. We spent three hours enjoying the beauty and vibe.

Awesome place to wander and explore

Eric Schmidt

I always love to go there to hear the wind blow and watch the grasses sway back and forward. This place is without a doubt on of my favorite places in the world, and I must recommend that you just go there and enjoy the peace.

Tyler Robbins

Nice park for a very short visit. Really not worth the drive unless you have other plans in the area. Interesting site and the placards tell you about who lived there. The mosquitoes were terrible, which made for a brisk walk. It's one of those places we had been meaning to check out, and now we have. It exists.

Tracy Finch

Great history, but I wish the building was opened. Plaques were helpful to understand the history of the mound builders!

Spiritous

If you’re interested in learning about the mounds people and their culture you’ll love this place. It has an interactive display as well. There’s walking trails. Be aware that dogs are only allowed on part of the trail.

Dorothy Kosowski

Very nicely maintained state park. Will definitely return

Joseph Coelho

Historically and archeologically important site. Beautiful location along the Crawfish river. The log walls are an interesting sight. Doing some background reading about the site before visiting helps. There is a plan to put up an Interpretive Center on site.

Glorkar Floki

Neat park. A lot of educational info on the signs located throughout. I wouldn't call this a destination park, but it made for a nice break while passing through the area. Glad I was finally able to make it out here.

Aztlan is the Northernmost Mississippian Mound Site. The state park is free accessible and educational. It is an ancient Native American site from the Mississippian Culture, and is a significant site as well.

One of the most amazing things in southern Wisconsin. It's a grassy field at first blush, but the signage does a lovely job helping you imagine the city that was there
