Had a great tour given by Ron who is an awesome ranger who knows all there is to know about the history of the site. Definitely worth a stop if your in the area to see a site where native Americans collected flint.

Surprisingly fun. The guide was wonderful, just make sure you call in advance to make sure they are doing tours.

The area surrounding Lake Meredith is stunning for the Texas Panhandle. The Alibates flint quarry is a wonderful place for a day trip and is truly an escape. We love going.

The ceaseless wind will drive you slowly, inevitably, and completely insane, but there is a start beauty in this inhospitable landscape

I had hoped to take a few night images from the area but the overcast skies kept me grounded. I took advantage of this to explore the area, heads down, to see what's there. I like macro photography so there are many options for that type of work, plus some cool roads through the area to access various forms of nature. Can't wait to come back in the spring

Ramona Ruebush

Tony was a great guide. We enjoyed the tour to the quarry site and learned a lot. The wild flowers were exceptional this year.

Very interesting place to visit, over 700 mining sites that Native Americans mined flint. They used flint for tools and weapons.

Wonderful area to explore with a free guided tour from a ranger or volunteer. Whether interested in prehistory, geology, or nature, the guides are knowledgeable. I suggest you call ahead of time to get your place on the tour since they only give so many tours per day and you can't go to the quarry unguided.

Karl Siggelow

Great history! Love the scenery and park staff was very helpful and friendly. Must See.

Nancy Holub

Wonderful tour with knowledgeable ranger. A good hike too exploring the flint. Learned about artifacts around the thousands of 5 foot diameter mini quarries.

Jackie Mowery

Grandkids (and I) got to learn to use an atlatl! Hiked up to the remains of ancient quarries (still visible) with polite, knowledgeable guides. The extraordinarily beautiful flint found here was traded clear across the country for thousands of years. Warning: the flint pieces you see are beautiful, but, as they say, they are all "leaverites". As in, "leave 'er right there." No souvenirs.

Jeff Owens

If you have any interest at all in geology, Native American history, survival in the wild or even US history, then a ranger tour of the flint quarries MUST be on your list. What might have been a passing interest in some pretty rocks was transformed into a unique and fascinating educational experience. Starting with 2 short films in the visitor center, the tour continues with a hike to the top of a mesa where piles of this gorgeous stone are scattered around excavation sites. Bravo Ron for a great tour. Remember to call ahead for a ranger tour; flint sites are inaccessible otherwise. And ask whether there is a school trip planned, so you can pick another day. Cannot even believe that admission and tour are both free. Worth much more.

For the last 13,000 years or so, this is where folks in this part of the continent got their tools - arrowheads, hammers, scrapers, etc. Thus, this is more of an intellectual destination than many national parks and monuments. The natural beauty is fine, but folks go primarily because of the place's historical significance. I'll add that this place is up to the national-park standards; everything perfectly clean, great architecture, excellent little museum, extremely helpful park rangers, and great guided hikes. One highlight: holding rocks which were handled by artisans long millennia ago. That's something which is hard to find elsewhere in this hemisphere.

I had been hearing about the AFQ for a while and really could not imagine what the big deal was. Joe Minh made it a wonderful and informative hike. About a mile up and about a mile down. Joe showed us dozens of plants and rock formations and, of course, the quarries. He was knowledgeable and fun. It was a thoroughly great and easy hike. Highly recommend.

The history of flint and what it meant to the survival of Native Americans and Settlers is interesting. They have a movie, and cool stuff to see. Call for ranger led hikes.

J French

I got lucky. I showed up and was taken on a tour within 5mins of being there. The tour was free and very informative. A good, little place to see and learn about the history before America.
