Amazing place to visit. Many trails leading to different cliff overlooks of the ocean. Certain cliffs you can jump off of into the water (scout the water for rocks first!) Incredible old war bunkers covered in some decent graffiti. There are bunkers in multiple locations so scout out them all! Pretty awesome that it was 100 degrees F out and we walked into a wide open bunker that felt like 68 degrees F. My friend said that was from the spirits in there.
This place is endless!!! So big, so much to see. You think it's just woods and you find a path that takes you to somewhere incredible.
Beautiful spot on a cove. Great for swimming, kyaking, paddle boarding. Water is nice and cool.
Such a cool place, and every time I go there I find more I didn't see before!
This is a cool spot, wading and snorkeling, shelter from the waves, quiet and ample parking too.
Awesome park.
Beautiful
Beautiful
Beautiful views. Very different and segmented sections of the park that you have to either walk or drive to. The old fort looked cool but without lights inside, I was wary to explore very deep. The coves are great for divers so expect to see a lot of them here. You can also see all of the boats going to and from Newport, which is a pretty sight.
Absolutely Beautiful
So much history and very beautiful views of the Atlantic ocean
Really nice scenery cute little Park great place to go fishing
Beautiful
Great for a day outing with the family
Great place to hang out and relax. Great for picnics and water watch
Amazing place for a day trip.
Come here to climb on some rocks and appreciate some mediocre graffiti. Don't come here late at night. It gets creepy.
This state park is a beautiful place to visit was once a Seacoast battery during World War II they have a spectacular view out to the ocean looking toward Castle Hill Newport and Narragansett also there are benches to sit on at the cliff and also a boat ramp. Bathroom facility also.
Beautiful scenery
A very special place... plenty of bench seating overlooking Castle Hill, Fort Adams...and with the entrance to Newport harbor right there it's a great place to watch the beautiful sailing yachts coming and going... don't forget to bring binoculars and a deli sandwich.
Loved it
Fun and easy adventure though this abandoned fort. Some scary dark tunnels to travel through or just check out the graffiti done by some talented artists. WARNING: Not all the graffiti is art, some is just immature drivel. Read up on the history before you get there, it all makes much more sense and gives you a better idea why this place exists. Plenty of great places to eat around here too, check out Slice of Heaven for lunch outside.
Fort Wetherill is a super cool historical spot on Rhode Island’s island, known as Jamestown. This fort, which is now a state park & tourist stop, straddles the perimeter of Jamestown coastline nestled in the Narragansett bay. I would challenge folks on wether if they have seen pure beauty, if they have yet to make there way to the cliffs of Fort Wetherill. Stop by & have a family Picnic on the grass or negotiate the weathered fort. Either way, make your way, very carefully, to the 50 to 70’ cliffs with picturesque New England shoreline views. One would would only need to watch the armature & professional artists who make the journey daily to realize the natural beauty. The fine print here would inform adventurers that they should leave small children behind & adorn long pants & appropriate footwear if they plan to investigate the paths, fort, & cliffs. I offer this as a mere suggestion, but you don’t have to take my word for it. Yours truly, Scotty
Convenient
Hhistorical and Great to keep fit
Great place to walk and enjoy ocean views, enjoy a picnic. So relaxing.
Great place to bring the kids to teach about history and a good scare in the underground caves. Been going here since I was a kid. Picnic areas, fields, and bathrooms for convenience.
AWESOMENESS
Nice little park with decent views, when the fog isn't heavy. We enjoyed the area, and the old fort was interesting to see. It is a bare bones remnant of the fort, and there is a lot of graffiti. We did walk a little along the shore, and bushwhacked for a few geocaches. I'd like to see this place on a better day, but I doubt I'll be back through any time soon.
Great place to walk by the water and explore the fort!
Beautiful ocean front park!
I like going here, came here with a friend.
Nice place to visit. Beautiful view from the cliff. But be careful. There is a lot of poison ivy there.
Beautiful, well maintained beach.
Many fond memories here and I just added one more.
Great place to visit or do a photography or photo shoot. History in the making . Of what this country has gone through. To make it free
Beautiful place! Love exploring the old fort to see all the unique graffiti, some of which is stunningly beautiful, and all of which I think ought to be preserved for future archeologists to see how my generation speaks and acts, haha. The fort area is poorly maintained so its best to go in spring or fall if you wanna explore the trails; it is definitely Tick City there. Amazing views of the Bay, and can see Newport Mansions from the cliffs.
Very cool abandoned fort. This is not a well-maintained historical site. There aren't any historical or point of interest signs explaining the history of the fort, but you can access a fair amount using the sturdy iron ladders that are still in place. The barracks and fort itself are WWII era and are constructed of concrete. Compared to the Newport side, this feels very quiet and secluded. Right at the fort there is a little stone beach cove where we watched spearfishermen. There are great, quiet views of the water and nearby cliffs. Absolutely beautiful.
a very scenic place where you can spend the day.
My guy Maximo Arias loved scuba diving here with old colony ambitions . He went diving in rockport and had a heart attack and drowned.Sunday June 23 2019. I went today to place a reef with my family to say goodbye. Let little max swim with the turtles and find octolady..kiss kiss babe
Nice park, cool ruins.
We go here every year to watch the fireworks. Always a great experience
Great location for launching a small boat (kayak, Hobie, RIB) into the bay, spearfishing, scuba diving, having a picnic, or just spending a day with the kids on a quiet, uncrowded, protected, rocky beach.
Excellent park,quite and clean
Want to see nature and history vandalized? Visit Fort Wetherill. The only reasons I'm not rating one star (1) a genuine effort is made in landscaping (2) the public restroom was surprisingly tidy (3) the locals seems to have reclaimed the outer areas for a dog park. If you visit I'd suggest driving to the upper most parking lot and walking the coastline. The rest isn't worth viewing.
Such a cool place and beautiful even with the graffiti
Great for scuba diving and awesome location for landscape photography
Great veiw. Fun to explore, just be careful.
Great place to go with the family great place to go site seeing also.
This was a great place to visit with the family and do some fishing
Really beautiful to go there and look out at the boats on the ocean from on top of the rocks.
My favorite adventure as a kid was to hike around ft.weitherill and climb the cliffs behind it!
Poor beach access and no clean water. Not a family friendly beach area.
Great place to visit. Very interesting and a nice lunch spot.
pretty place to swim and enjoy the incredible scenery!!
From Central mass,we always have a good time here.
Good diving and fishing.
Great place to go scuba diving.
From biking, hiking and diving this fort is rich in history and peaceful grace. Picnic areas where a family ballgame may easily be played. Precious gift of open space, cherished.
Bring sneakers and jeans, to truly appreciate some of the vistas around the fort you are going to be going through some brush. The fort itself is a haven for graffiti, some of which is beautiful artwork.
Great views, favorite place to go when in the area
There was a lot of graffiti here but I kind of like it so take it for what it is also a couple of benches and nice views. You'll have to hike up a little hill to get to it though
We've been her several times now and there is so much to explore! Great for kids and adults but I wouldn't bring young children because some of the areas are hard to navigate and you could easily fall a good distance.
Beautiful park with great views, good fishing, good scuba diving.
Nice place to visit, lots of options for picnicking, exploring, fishing, etc
Beautiful and soothing
Lots of fun
This is clearly a place to come to if you are interested in learning some history. There is so much you can learn about this place and the view of the ocean and sun setting is by far breath taking. I come here a lot to find peace and relaxation away from the city and all the drama that comes with it. Its great for picnic's and for an adventure through the FORT. Come prepared if you wanna to in the fort. Bring some flashlights with extra batteries if you plan on staying after dark. Please Enjoy a part of our HISTORY where a part of life journey began.
Great Rhode Island Park in Jamestown! There is so much history related to this location dating back to the native Americans to the Navy’s use of the location during WWII. It’s beautiful and close to the eastern passage of the Narraganset. I very appreciate the park and recommend this place to everyone.
Amazing views, great trails and awesome artwork!
Great place to bask in the Sun or be shutter bug great views. Great place to take kid looking for an adventure exploring the forts and roaming the ground nice place for picnicking.
awesome for the family and kids the state did a good job keeping this jem alive
This is a place for a quick stop and explore if you are around the area. It is not a place to travel too just to see. But again if you are around, it worth a quick visit. The fort is old and abandoned, and vandalized. I have been there in summer and winter. They look so different. Was cool to see the difference.
One of the best protected shore dives in Little Rhody.
Very popular scuba diving / snorkeling lagoon. Incredible views of Newport, with many various sail boats and ships traveling west passage. Many Benches overlook the ocean. Excellent views of Jamestown. WWII Large Gunnery Placement which can be explored. Picnicing with bathroom facilities.
one of the best places i have been it has forts and tunnels you can go throw there is so much history to learn at this place you have to go back
One of the best view spots on the island. Great views of Newport and the ocean. There are also many ww2 bunkers part of Fort Wetherill that are cool to check out!
This is a small out of the way park on the southern end of Jamestown Island. There are cookout areas and trails leading to cliffs overlooking Narragansett Bay. There are also remnants of the fort still standing which you can access. The walls are covered in graffiti, so bring your cans of spray paint if you want to make your mark. ;-)
This is a review of the fort portion of the park. We didn't see any other parts. I really don't get why this place has such great reviews. The state has chosen to allow defacing (to put it mildly) of a piece of American military history. This place is covered from top to bottom with swastikas, swear words, phallic drawings and occult symbols. I suppose locals are used to it and think it's cool or unique to allow such disrespect. In reality this place should be leveled if it can't be treated with more respect. Judging by the drawings that are all over this thing I shudder to think of what horrible things have been allowed to go on inside... And I don't mean when it was operational.
Really nice park. Free parking, picnic tables, trees to hang hammocks on, grassy area to play games, scenic fort, place to scuba dive, or bike all of Jamestown from here as we did.
Love this place, so many great spots to just relax in peace. Great views
Great park with lots of trails and beautiful views. Perfect for leisurely hiking or scaling some rocks. The remnants of the fort are great to check out as well.
Beautiful ocean front park!
Dalyn's little gym. Great place to hike and enjoy the waterfront
Love all the secret rooms, dark and mysterious. Fun.
The kids loved this place and we spent hours investigating. Bring flashlights to check out all of the tunnels and watch for all of the poison ivy.
I absolutely loved exploring the bunker i hope to go again soon
I've been coming here for 35 years. It's a little run down, but there is so much to explore. My 12 and 9 year old kids love it.
Great for picnic and fishing.
Beautiful ❤️
Lots of poison ivy, can walk through much of it if you are able to get up and down stairs. Take a bright flashlight, it is too bad that it has been vandalized as much as it has. It's history is an interesting read have fun.
Love this place, it's do cool!!
Beatiful landscape. Freaky dark halls in the fort are fun.
Always a great place to spread a beautiful day at good picnic areas and lots of places to explore
This was one of the first places I ever visited in Rhode Island, and I wasn't disappointed. It's a nice walk and it has beautiful views. For the adventurous, there are paths through the woods that lead right down to the water. Its awesome when you get the opportuity to see one of the street artists while they paint. This one of my favorite places of all time.
One of my favorite places in the state. The fort is pretty big an it's interesting to crawl through the tunnels and look at the graffiti
Nice view, but not much to do.
This place is amazing to explore! If you do i suggest good flashlights. They have really cool tunnels to go threw!
1 of my favorite spots in state
Nice place
Great little dive site. Love it. Can't beat the view.
Where I want my ashes thrown when I die
Beautiful view of the ocean.
Gorgeous beach and neat old forts
It's spray painted to hell and smells like pee, needs to be fixed up asap.
Loved going to check out the creepy tunnels and passageways in the fort. Some people don't like the graffiti, but I think it makes the place more interesting: you never know what you are going to find. Honestly I think it makes the place much more interesting and helps with landmarks to keep you fro m getting turned around. The cliffs and water are great too. Definitely recommend wearing sturdy closed for shoes!
We LOVE climbing around this old concrete fort and getting some AMAZING views of the ocean and the coast South of Newport.
Great place for a wedding!
Love the forts and beaches. I go as often as I can
Great place if you love exploring and going off the beaten path. The lack of maintenance and informational signs adds to the intrigue in my opinion; you might have to do a little research on your own to explore the park's interesting historical significance. The large concrete structures were batteries constructed just prior the the United State's entry into World War II, but were supposedly never put to use. Now abandoned, the vast network of rooms and tunnels are very fun to explore if you are brave enough and have a flashlight. Although they can be hard to find, there are a lot of small trails that lead to beautiful craggy cliffs and views of the harbor, a perfect location for something like a picnic. For any Wes Anderson fans out there, the filming location of the dancing scene in his movie Moonrise Kingdom was at the westernmost cove in the park, so definitely check that out. This cove is also a great place to swim, as the water is super clear and not too cold in the summer. Overall, this park effectively captures the beauty of Rhode Island, and it is a great place to come on your own or with a few friends.
It's beautiful. There are old forts to explore. This is my happy place.
This is one of our favorite places to visit. I'm personally a fan of all the old historic battery structures, even with all the graffiti. I actually think it adds a lot of personality to them. The walk is relaxing, and sights from the coastline are breathtaking. The pictures are of the second battery, the first is quite a bit larger, and my wife and I were actually able to walk on and through it.
Neat old fort with tons of cool graffiti!
Nice place to walk around with the family, during late winter and early spring.
Great place to explore. Don't forget to check out the small passageways. They come out top bigger rooms.
Beautiful and peaceful !
cool place to walk around
Cute little spot. Very much a traditional little fishing harbor. Has an interesting view of Newport harbor and some of those big houses along the shore. You can sit on a deck chair and watch all the fancy sailboats go to and fro from Newport harbor.
Not much to see. Lots of poison ivy along the narrow trails. Popular dive instruction site.
Great place to unwind and take long walks on the trails and view the rocky shores. Dogs love to play and chase balls in the open spaces. Nature will cure what ails ya.
Great cliffs by the sea!
Nice place to see some history only thing there is a lot of girfiati
A favorite of mine. Full of history and you can walk around and explore for days and days. Clean condition and i hope it stays that way.
Beautiful, historic spot right on the water. Check out the beautiful views or the strange abandoned military facilities. Would be a good destination for a bike ride adventure.
This could be a great place to visit. Unfortunately, people use it as a trashcan. This is unfortunate and sad. This is why we can't have nice things. If people would treat the outdoors with respect and dignity this world would be a great place. If you change your child's diaper don't leave the trash for the next guy. Take it back with you. Also, bring your fishing trash home with you. This is crazy. I would like to visit again and if I do, I will bring gloves and a trash bag and clean it up!
Great place to train for scuba
Beautiful place! Very clean! Highly recommend coming here!
My absolute favorite get away. On my days off
Fun place to hike and climb
Beautiful day on the cliffs
Interesting old fort grounds with graffitti all over. Seems to be popular spot for local teens. Nice water views.
Romantic and shrouded cliff and cove both with a great view of the ocean. Gps navigation is iffy and wouldn't recomend skating there without a helmet
Awesome old battlements with breathtaking views. This is an amazing place to do a photo shoot.
Very nice for a fun day out with the kids
If you are looking for a nice location for a picnic and some ocean views, then this park is a perfect place.
Nice little beach area and shallow cove for kids. Local scuba diving destination. Used by many out-of-state folks (especially from CT.) Used by many as a scuba training site. Parking lot get's quite crowded in the summer. Porta-John facilities in main parking lot. From the top parking lot, you get a very nice views of Newport/Castle Hill/Brenton Point. There are benches overlooking the view, you can watch the boats come and go: power, sail, large auto-carriers, etc.
Great views, good place for a picnic, and rest rooms
I can't go home and not go here!
Nice place for fishing. Beautiful to look at. Not really a family place.
one thing i liked was we had to eat on the ungook
Great to see the sunset and after all it is in Jamestown, a lot of hidden places to go, it's a favorite spot for photos even for the locals. Although we have 1 secret beach that's even better for sunset. I can't give away our special spots though. Think of an untouched Newport, RI. That's what Jamestown is, an untouched paradise filled with historical locations
Great place to explore. Bring a good flashlight and explore the fort foundations. Very unique
Pretty cool place to explore, didn't know it existed. Thanks to my daughter again for being or tour guide and teaching us the history.
One of the most interesting and fun places to explore. Right on the coast to boot!
Beautiful
Great rock ledges and stunning views
Very cool place to hang out at with friends.
Short paths to spectacular vistas with tons of long benches to sit on!
Beautiful day enjoying a walk along the water.
I love this place. Wish I had more pictures from my camera but it is what it is. I got a glimpse of a nice cruise ship of the top of one of the bunkers near boat launch side of the park. Lots of history here and plenty to look at. Unfortunately a lot of graffiti but some are actually really good. I love history and walking through the fort is a blessing as it was blocked off by metal doors. But thanks to vandalism the majority of the fort is accessible. I recommend flashlights and a hoodie when walking through as random ditches and obstrustions are throughout the place. Also if u find a trail I recommend taking it as well as it will more than likely lead you to the water with some views as well. Enjoy.
A very nice place to spend the day
Amazing views over the water, graffiti, and walking trails.
Amazing place. I love climbing the cliffs near the ocean and exploring all over. Me and my 8 friends all got a ticket for leaving like 15 minutes late so BE OUT ON TIME! The game warden is a really nice guy but he has to do his job too!
Awesome sites and places to see here a must do park for your summer time!!!
Great place to visit.
It's a ten but don't go there. Leave it for me.
It was so much nicer when I was a kid. The spray paint all over the tunnels is such an ashame. I wish that renovations could be done. It has such a beautiful overview of the oceam.
Been going here since I was a kid. Really cool place.
