Facing the Statue of Liberty across New York harbor, the East Coast Memorial is located at the southern end of Battery Park. This memorial honors the 4,601 missing American servicemen who lost their lives in the Atlantic Ocean while engaged in combat during World War II. Designed by the architectural firm of Gehron and Seltzer, the monument consists of a large, paved plaza punctuated by eight massive 19-foot tall gray granite pylons (four each on the southern and northern sides) onto which are inscribed the names, rank, organization and state of each of the deceased.

Massive memorial for the 4601 US servicemen who lost their life in the Atlantic Ocean during the World War II. Their names are inscribed on eight massive granite pylons. Bronze eagle holds a wreath over waves. This monument was dedicated by President Kennedy in 1963. Truly awesome in its scale.

Deb Pearson

Beautiful memorial and eagle sculpture. Nice view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

This is a beautifully situated memorial with views out onto New York harbor. It's simple, with people's names inscribed into tall white slabs of granite (I believe). Toward the center there is a large eagle statue. A nice place to pause if you're passing by.

What a magnificent memorial with perfect views of the statue of liberty. We came here foe views of the statue, which were amazing. There is plenty of viewing room and away from the immense line of people going over to the island. We couldn't justify it, seeing as as soon as you get up close you miss so much. This memorial was an extra that we didn't know existed! Go see it.

The park itself offers Sitzgelehenheiten and from the pier you get from far a good view of the left side of the statue. Great memorial for all of those who had fallen in WWII with a great view of the statue of liberty. An extremely lovely place to stop and reflect and read all of the names and look out towards the Statue of Liberty. Very powerful.

Enjoyed walking around Battery Park, and visiting Ellis Island via the ferry. While the weather wasn't "perfect" or sunny, I still caught a picture of the eagle statue from underneath it, looking up at the stormy sky, and loved how it came out.

Wonderfull memorial to all the dead from the US navy and Merchant corps in the Atlantic campaigns of WWII. The eagle stands out so well against the Manhattan backdrop and with magnificent views of the Statue of Liberty this is a great place to take time out and reflect.

Haunting, and very American in style, with the gloriously huge Art Deco style eagle swooping from above to grasp the Laurel Wreath, a symbol of triumph tempered by monolithic monuments naming the cost with a sea of lost.
