Amazing central NM climbing destination. We did Bouldering next to the car, sport climbing, and multi pitch trad climbing all in the same day. You can chase or escape the sun in any direction depending on the what you want. Lots of camping options, and they have a bathroom! Cant wait to go back for more quality climbing and Nature!

I had heard about the box from my rock climbing friends and while there are so many cool climbs, this was also a great spot for hiking. The area isn't that large but the steep inclines and the varied landscape make this a really great location.

So I went there to hike unfortunately the trail I choose had a lot of loose rock and was very crumbly. I have been the other way before are well and it's just a lot of rocks small rocks that are solid. So I get to a point on the mountain and realize I'm probably going to take longer going down than up. So I turn around and realize the trail is much to crumbly to climb down on and realize I'm surrounded by solid boulders. So what do I do I use the boulders to get down. At this point I'm free climbing but it isn't like a cliff face so just using my knowledge of the rock I am on the kind of sand I am dealing with and the fact that my legs are incredibly sturdy I just climb it down. All the way down I can hear these people learning to climb complaining about how hard it is to climb a boulder and how much their hands hurt. I'm just thinking seriously? So I arrive at the bottom right next to these guys and I'm like sorry to interrupt and point the trail I had just taken. After that I left. It was enjoyable to an extent. Also think I broke my thumb between two boulders no big deal though. Was a fun day overall.

This is a pretty stop on the way to the VLA and I ended up enjoying it more than the VLA itself (not a knock to the VLA, it was still really cool to see). When I was there a bunch of people were practicing rock climbing. It was fun to just wander down the canyon and take some photos. It's BLM land and I didn't get the chance to explore too much of it. Definitely a place on my list of places to go back to some day.

Love the box...pack it out, don't litter it is a great place, hippy hideout years ago. Praise the boulder maybe there with be a bowlful for you waiting. Great place to watch insane people who cling off cliff walls like bugs. Like to go there just to spend a little while in this majestic sheltered canyon. Great place to hike or take fiddo for a frisky in the great outdoors. Respect, preserve, protect by leaving no trace.

Awesome BLM Recreation Area close to Socorro New Mexico. If you're driving past here you must stop and see what the fuss is about. Two huge rocky bluffs form a box canyon with steep 150 foot plus faces for you to repel or free climb. Absolutely stunning from the South Side looking North.

Easy hike into canyon though rocky canyon bed. Appeared to be short climbs into caves which we didn't try. Avoid heat of sun by going earlier or later in day.

I have been coming here since I was in high school; although, I could actually boulder well then. There are plenty of places to rope climb, if that is something you enjoy. There is also a lot of great bouldering throughout the canyon that can make for a great day trip. If you are not a climber, no big deal. The scenery is amazing and there are many short hikes that can be done. It is a great place to visit, but realize it gets quite warm in the summer. Also, watch small kids and inexperienced hikers closely as there are many places to fall off and get seriously hurt, or worse.

I do some sport climbing here with friends. It has a wide range of difficulties, Scarry wall is good for beginners. Can get very hot and there are cacti growing near belaying spots.
