REVIEWS OF Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument IN New Mexico

We came here on a whim and it was probably the most spectacular thing that we saw in the greater Santa Fe area. The slot canyon trail is unbelievablably beautiful and even if people have reduced mobility they can do the beginning. Super helpful and friendly people at the visitors' center.

Stevie Lynn

Almost didn't make it to the park after we saw the line of cars waiting to get in. We took a detour and stopped by a visitor center at Cochiti Lake, where the guide told us we shouldn't miss Tent Rocks. On our next try, we were first in line for entry. The man at the gate was very helpful and drew us a trail for exactly where we should hike, and where we should take photos. Keep in mind - the park closes at 3, so everyone has to start back down the trail at 2:30. But the views are incredible, and well worth the hike. My sister and I covered it in about an hour or so. There were several moments of scrambling and jumping, some awkward footholds, and a few tight spaces. Overall, it was the most incredible landscape we saw on our trip.

Maximilian Upp

This place is a gem. Used to be totally under the radar but the word is out. Worth the visit but you’ll wanna go early. The hike is fairly strenuous with some pretty good climbs if you’re not used to it. So kids and casual hikers be ready.

Pointy hoodoos... not really worth a long detour...and IMHO not really worth NM status...

Amazing place to hike, and a photographer's playground. Great vistas and hidden canyons. Bring a lot of drinking water! Heatstroke and dehydration are real dangers here.

This is a must-do in northern New Mexico. I recommend getting there as early as possible (we got there before opening) to avoid the crowds because there can be a wait to get in. Hike all the way to the top and enjoy stunning views overlooking the hoodoos and the surrounding scenery.

If you will be in either the Albuquerque or Santa Fe area, it would definitely be worth your while to visit here. Awesome spot--don't miss it! Beautiful canyon, very narrow in some places but a natural wonder, reminded me of the landscape in Cappadocia,Turkey. You will need sturdy shoes and plenty of water!!

Troy Fisher

Beautiful place to hike! I would suggest going to the morning for you can enjoy it for most of the day and parking gets filled up fast. Try and go during the week if possible because weekend are really busy. It’s also 5 dollars for parking so make sure you have some cash!

For those of you looking for the Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, this is the wrong location. The actual location is near Cochiti Pueblo

I highly recommend this amazing place. You cannot bring a dog here. Apparently since some of the trail is very narrow dogs going up and coming down can fight. This is why I was no longer allowed. I don't recommend leaving your dog in the car it's too hot. However, the hike is amazing! It's like going to another space and time.

Different landscape and beautiful view from the top

Beautiful! Will return! Nice walk, didn’t take all that long to walk the trail.

Yikes! This place is NOT a good day trip distance from somewhere like Dallas or Fort Collins. When we came here it was a little crowded. There is not a good place to fill your water bottle before your hike so be sure to bring water with you! (You can purchase some good water at most gas stations or supermarkets). The hike is not too bad, but it’s HOT. We were sweating a lot while we climbed. The rocks look a little bit like tents, but I think they look more like other things. (like rockets or monks). Be careful not to get dehydrated and watch out for velvet ants, snakes, and scorpions!

Kristin Bogopane

I love exploring the outdoors and grew up traveling to the national parks and state parks in Utah and surrounding states. This is a great hike. We saw many older people doing the hike and were so impressed! I thought it was a hike around a rim of a canyon from the pictures we've seen, but you go through the slots in the canyon, walk along the base, then go up the mountain. They have some steps, but some places can be a bit strenuous and you'll have to climb over rocks. Bring plenty of water when you go. It took us about 3 hours with kids, but they all did great! It was 106 degrees out when we went, but the breeze and shady spots made it bearable. I believe there rangers hike up to the top before 4pm and start hiking down at 4 and make everyone hike back with them even if they haven't made it to the top, for safety reasons. Great hike, get out and explore!

Awesome and unique hiking trails. The Slot Canyon trail is steep and has some tight spots at parts but is very rewarding, amazing geological formations and great views from the top.

Julio Garcia

This was an amazing experience. Beautiful is the only word I can use to express it.

Slot Canyon trail is amazing. It (and the Cave Trail, which we didn't do) are closest to the entrance. We only did part of the trail as we'd very tired 3.5 and 7.5 year old kids who were so tired from a month of traveling. So we ended our hike before it got steep... boo hoo. STILL, it was awesome and amazing. The views, the experience was unique for us adults, and the hikes had no problem. The interesting topology means this is one of the very best beginner hikes in the world. Google Map is quite incomplete wrt to this national monument, so check the official website. We mapped our route using Google Map navigation towards the Tent Rocks Scenic Overlook. It turns out to be useful as it puts us at the right entrance. That spot is a few miles further down from the Slot Canyon on unpaved gravel trail, which we skipped. Given the high heat (100F day) and our young kids, the ranger at the entrance recommended Slot Canyon trail. It was truly a perfect outing.

My wife and I went for a little hike. We have never been so pleasantly suprised. This is one of the best hikes we have ever done. Views are spectacular but you have to go all the way to the top. "Breath taking". Take plenty of water on the hot days. Will definitely be doing this again.

All I can say is do not miss this trail. Seems long and portions near the top are difficult but my goodness the summit is worth the effort. Got to be one of the top trails in the US.

Left Albuquerque at 10:30 and had to wait in line to get in at noon. 15 minute wait in the middle of May was not bad. They only allow a certain amount of people in so be there early if you don't want to wait. Nice parking also for long campers, paved road. It had rained the previous day so there were some areas that were slippery due to mud. Some parts are narrow enough that you need to wait for your turn as there are people leaving as well. Very windy and you will leave with sand in your hair.

This place is really amazing and not far from major hubs in NM. The slot canyons are incredible! The hike to the top after the slot canyons is neat for an overview but may be challenging for some. If you don’t feel like climbing after the slot canyons - don’t. The canyons are really the star of the show anyways. Really fascinating landscape. Pretty accessible. Good signage. The canyons offer plenty of shade but so make sure to wear sturdy footwear and pack plenty of water. Highly recommend some type of hydration bladder backpack. Also make sure you take your camera!

The Tent Rocks with beautiful trails giving you more surprises as you walk. They have an overlook point as well. The park closes at 5 in winter so if you wish to do trails and overlook you would probably spend 4 hours at this place. Keep your water bottle with you as it's a dry place. No matter how many pictures you see on Google or take with your camera, it surely doesn't give you what you can experience with your eyes.

This place is not to be missed--amazing rock formations. You should definitely do the Slot Canyon hike. If you're not into clambering over rocks or heights, you can always turn around when you get to the wild part.

Unique natural beauty. Rest frequently, stay hydrated!!! Don’t overextend.

I see a lot of reviews from people who went to the wrong place, but that shouldn't affect their review of these tent rocks. This was a moderate 3 mile hike, mostly in shade in stunning, almost otherworldly terrain.

Awesome! Loved this hike and it was just right for the moderate hiker. Traversing through the slot canyon was beautiful and when you exit into the Canyon the views are fascinating. The climb over the rocks to the top was the most challenging, but if you take your own pace highly achievable. Must see from the very top. You look back down over the Canyon floor where you started the journey.
