Never will I ever return to this trail. A flyer was recently brought to my attention of weekly nature hikes until May titled “Hump Day After Work Hikes”. A few of my coworkers and myself arrived at the center and I had brought my recently rescued dog that is still in training along with me. Being that my dog is still in training, I separated myself clearly from the group and was in the process of muzzling my dog when a woman who did not identify herself came up to me to let me know that my dog was not allowed on the trail. I would like to think that it is common sense that if a person who is clearly separated from a group of people with a dog who is in the process of being muzzled that you should not come up to them hands forward without 1. Identifying yourself and 2. Asking to touch the animal. Not only was the experience embarrassing for being turned away but was it completely unacceptable to the woman to come in contact with a complete stranger who is saying “DO NOT TOUCH MY DOG”. Not only did this unidentified “leader” of this group put herself in danger but she put myself, my dog and the safety of the other patrons around in danger. It is probably in the best interest of this center to train your staff better instead of picking any Tom, Dick and Harry off the street to approach an animal that is not theirs. I have never walked or hiked a trail that did not allow animals so perhaps it would help to put out a flyer that is clear about not accepting animals. Extremely disappointed that I drove 40 mins to be turned away.

I had a great time and thats even attending this event alone. Today we painted rocks. There were many people their with small children. I was just happy to attend a soothing free event that aided me with ideals thats going to add color to my summer garden. The ride was well worth it.

The nature center was nice. There's usually a volunteer on hand to answer any questions you may have about the area and it's wildlife and resources. There's some live local wildlife exhibits, snakes, turtles, frogs, etc. There are a few different trails to hike too. Free admission and parking, but if you can, please consider a donation of some kind.

Nature center has a few animals to look at, artifacts from the area and scheduled nature classes. Call ahead for a schedule of events or stop by and talk to a volunteer. Lots of volunteer oppertunites such as gardening. Wonderfully maintained trails on nature center side of the state park but you can eaisly access the whole state park from this location on the yellow trail at the little bridge. Some boardwalks over marshy areas.

I absolutely LOVE this place. I have two young daughters and we go there at least 12 times a year. We call it "our backyard." We can easily kill a half a day hiking the trails, visiting the bees, watching the birds, checking out the dragonfly pond, playing alongside a creek, walking through a marsh, walking through a pine forrest, owl spotting, wondering through the nature center, etc. It has been an unbelievably fantastic catalyst to get my kids outside, active, and curious.

Sam Parker
