A fun and interesting place to learn about Nebraska history! The museum is full of neat displays and artifacts and the grounds are very well maintained for easy exploring. Can't wait to come back for a Living History weekend and see all of the reenactments!

I love finding historical places to take my son. Had a great time, and even got a smashed penny souvenir in the welcome center. The sweet older lady in the welcome center was super helpful.

Great experience with Grandchildren 5&7. Living History was fun.

I went there with my three kids (7, 5, 1). The two oldest enjoyed; the youngest was along for the ride, but she enjoyed toddle-running through the large open parade grounds. Three of the four barracks (which also served as the fort's walls with firing ports) have been rebuild along with several other buildings. The site is on a bluff just above the former location of the Missouri River (geography lesson for kids: the Missouri has since shifted three miles to the East). Plan to go on weekends when Friends of Fort Atkinson are having living history sessions (first weekend, May through October). Events include craft displays (and butter samples), treaty signings, marches, and rifle & canon firings. Pros: plenty of open space for kids to play, well maintained, good geography, A GIFT SHOP WITH REASONABLE PRICES(!) Cons: relatively low on the historical significance scale (but still a nice way to spend an afternoon)

Lots of history. Living history at its finest.

Great park, enjoyed a weekend that included a living history portion with people living as they did when the fort was in use.

As history goes, an awesome place to visit. But honestly be warned, most of the Fort was closed up, including the visitor center. Granted, mid-week, mid-day visit but very disappointed in the long drive to lose out on the extras available if everything wasn't locked up. Very pretty area, large grounds. I hope to revisit when the Fort is staffed. I happened to be the only person in the park for my 1 1/2 hour visit.

It was a fun place to take the grandkids to learn a little about history. Interesting things to check out. Better to go when they do the reinactments of the war.

The Fort Atkinson State Historical Park is part of the Nebraska Game and Parks system. This park contains a reconstruction of an 1820 US Army Fort, apparently the largest western fort at that time. The Lewis and Clark Expedition also stopped at this location in 1804. This park is a wonderful property, with lots of interesting things to see and do. There's a nice visitor's center, various hiking trails, and of course, the Fort and various other related buildings (like a settler's shop, a blacksmith shop, etc.). If you visit on a Living History Weekend (first weekend of every month), you get the same feel as Colonial Williamsburg, with lots of people dressed in period costumes doing things exactly as they had in 1820.

Stephen Baker

I've been a living history volunteer here for 25 years starting when I was only 8. The fort provides so many experiences. It's a scenic 15 minute drive north of Omaha. The fort is on a large state park grounds with trees surrounding it so it feels like modern civilization disappears and you go back in time. When there aren't volunteers present, it's a serene walk through open fields with enough to see to make it worth it. When there are volunteers, there is a lively representation of life at Nebraska's first real presence of Western civilization with canons and soldiers and blacksmiths and a general store and so many other things. The more you interact, the more fun it is.

A very good family friendly place to go . On the first weekend of the month from May thru October they have reenactments of what life was like in 1820. The people dress in period clothing and every one of them are very knowledgeable about the life back then

Deep Crack

This is an important historical point in Nebraskan and American history. It is a good place to do whatever you want, because there is barley anyone there. Sadly it may be closed due to low attendance.

A wonderful experience for the family. Get outdoors, enjoy history at its source. Don't tell Iowa but this is the location where Lewis and Clark met with the Native Americans...yes, this is the real Council Bluffs, right here in Nebraska. There's a marker on the location. Military reenactments on some weekends in summer. Winter events too. Fun!

Nicely preserved Fort.

Lots of wide open space to walk around and where history took place. They have living history over the summer months on weekends. That seem like it would be fun to participate in, or visit during. See how they lived, dressed, what they ate. The Fort was larger than I had anticipated, isn't that always the case? Love that they have the statues to represent and all the signs to help you with history.

Attend the Heritage Day Festival. Overall, the experience was interesting. However, I felt uncomfortable with the interaction I had with a volunteer. I spoke to her and she did not respond. She looked at me and told the other volunteer that she would have to finish up what she was doing, gave her the instrument for her to complete the task, folded up her apron, placed it on the chair and turned to talk to other people surrounding me. The people with whom she spoke, did not solicit information from her. They were just observing. I was very offended by her behavior. It was as if she did not want to talk to me because of my ethnicity. I did not want to take a large leap to assume that this was the cause of her behavior. Therefore, I contacted a representative at Ft Atkinson and describe my experience to him along with my ethnic background. After I throughly explained my experience, he remained quite on the phone, as did I. He finally responded with great reluctance, "We have volunteers and I am sure she did not mean it." I remained quite on the phone. He too sat quiet. Finally, he stated, "thank you for letting me know, I will talk with her. " Such a sad, sad sense of concern.
