REVIEWS OF Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument IN Montana

Joel Perry

This place is a national treasure. Wide rolling prairies, beautiful cliffs, awesome river views. Accessible only by paddling, the Missouri breaks gives a great sense of solitude and peace. There are a fair number of developed campsites, with fire rings and pit toilets. During the summer, you will likely have to negotiate with outfitters for a campsite. Sometimes this was fine, on one occasion we were rudely turned away by one outfitter, only to be welcomed and helped to tie down boats by another. Missouri River Outfitters you rock!

Heading South on 191 I came to the Missouri River that was socked in with thick fog, it looked like a great Lake from the elevation on the North side. I descended into what seemed like a bottomless abyss, crossed the bridge but could not see the river below it due to the fog. Nasty while I was in it but a beautiful sight just before the crossing.

Was an interesting natural formation.

Lovely place to kayak, run and bike. We were involved in the first ever triathlon where we did all three. 20 mile kayak, 5k run, and 20 mile bike ride back to the start line. The little town of Fort Benton was very inviting as well. The locals were very helpful in finding a place to camp. We will be back to defend our title!

Virgelle Mercantile Store and the beautiful Missouri River. Rustic cabins to rent for the night, Virgelle Landing for putting in a canoe or camping, and the Virgelle Ferry for exploring the other side. Extraordinary area!!

A unique and beautiful landscape. Definitely worth a visit. Wildlife rich with the presettlement wildlife community slowly reestablishing. Carry water and watch the weather - native surface roads are clay and become impassable when wet. Once the ruts dry out, high clearance is required. We are fortunate to have this public land. American Prairie Reserve lands are private, but public access is welcomed. Thank you American Prairie Foundation!

So many mosquitoes... It's pretty here and there are some nice foot trails but it's hard to picnic or otherwise do much while being consumed alive by the skeeters. Not the park's fault

Such a wonderful place, with the more exquisite landscapes. However, the water is not clean, thanks to the cattle that is raised in the boards of the river.

There's nothing like being there to see and experience that view as seen by those who explored it first.

We averaged 4 miles per hour so 15 mile days were easy. This was the very end of July. Notes: can't filter the Missouri sure to pesticides etc.; Late afternoon wind and thunderstorms can damage/flood tents if you're not careful. Developed camp sites we're great and well taken care of.
