REVIEWS OF Grand Portage National Monument IN Minnesota

Such a beautiful place! This is a trip we take every year. We spend the weekend at the powwow and we always visit this monument. The people here immerse you in history so that it comes alive. The people who are involved in this all dress in colonial attire. All the tents and the tools they use are all historically correct. This whole monument is built of wood! The kitchen and dinning hall is amazing! The table and chairs were hand made. They also have other areas that show how other things such as canoes were made. The blacksmith is amazing to watch. The gargen area is beautiful. This is a must see place!!

Miles Lesperance

What a neat slice of Ojibwe history. A lot of buildings to see, and the historians on site offer a neat perspective on what it was like to live in that time. Also some neat history on the North West Company, and the hats they made and sold.

Irene Potap

It was a pleasure to visit and learn more about Grand Portage, trade, and canoe making. Amazing people greeted us and shared many fascinating details. Rain or shine, visit to the monument will be a good idea.

Christy Young

Amazing historical place to visit- take the whole family- living history before your eyes.

Michael Hecker

Just about six miles from the Canadian border and Grand Portage State Park is Grand Portage National Monument. No fees are required. Highly recommend that you start your experience with the 15-minute movie in the Visitors Center that is very good at explaining the history of the area and the fur trade run by the Northwest Company. We also visited the Fort William Historical Park in Thunder Bay, Canada. We found the movie and interpreters in Grand Portage more informative. We got more of the history in Grand Portage than we did in Fort William (a fee is charged). The fur trade by the Northwest Company started in Grand Portage and later moved to Thunder Bay when the international border lines came into existence.

Nice and easy paved trail to see the largest falls in MN

Carson Koehnen

The staff was very knowledgeable and it was maintained nicely.

Hugo Hackenbush

Fantastic exhibits& free admission. Walk the trail which looks down on the post: it's about half an hour and loops from the post to the corner of the visitor center parking lot. Steepish climb: compacted dirt & stairs from parking lot to almost the viewpoint, cement & stairs from viewpoint to the trading post. There are signs numbered 1-14 on the loop trail, but no secret decoder ring that I saw explaining the numbers. I walked about 1/2 mile up the Grand Portage trail: it was very, very easy - just the mosquitoes overwhelmed me and I turned back.

Michelle Farrell

Terrific stop. Watch the movie at the Visitor Center!!

Gina Stillwell

Beautiful views. Helpful staff and good information in their museum. Incredible and beautiful wood burning fireplace!

TheSpookb

Ok. This place is pretty awesome. Be warned... If you have little kids. This might be boring. However, the history of this landmark and heritage is well documented. Its actually a really cool place. The staff is always around and will tell you anything. They are great. If you have the frame of mind... Look around and just be in awe. Beautiful, historic, mind opening. Love it. Oh! Be warned! There is a hike that says .5 miles to the top. It is but, it's 900 ft of stairs and incline to get there. Worth the view. Just... Be warned that it is a pretty heavy hike

Clara Kammann

Danielle Grunz

Interesting area, wish there was a bit more instruction on where to go/order to follow. Beautiful scenery and history.

Nikki Wakal

You are going to love this place! And the best part, it's all free!! The building was so educational, and had interactive areas as well. But the actual village, shut the front door! There was a dude MAKING a birch canoe! Oh, and all the actors are volunteers! They did a great job engaging people and knew SO much! I am so sad this is far away from me, I could spend a whole day there!

Jason Greff

Really good tour. Doesn't look like much from the road, but it's worth the stop.

Interesting NPS site on the Ojibwe reservation devoted to the history of the trading post and portage route used by les voyageurs and natives. Fascinating place, with a very modern visitor center with great exhibits (and videos!). I highly recommend a stop here if you're in the area. It almost feels like a different country all the way up here.

Amazing national monument and a blast from the past. Make the trek its worth it.

Beautiful visitor center and rebuilt hub for fur trading back in the day. Awesome place! Could easily spend several hours or more here. The rangers dress in period costumes and reinact the events of that era. They are so excellent and knowledgeable! More than impressive!

The people who work here are full of knowledge and taught us so much. It's amazing how much history we have right here in Minnesota. I highly recommend visiting this place. It was a wonderful, educational experience.

Brad Allison

Very interesting exhibits. Helpful and knowledgeable staff.

Samantha Cummings

Loved it!! The staff is very informative and dressed historically for the time fur trading was booming. We talked for quite a while with a gentleman about how beaver pelts were used as the currency, how beaver pelts were turned into hats, and how the Ojibwe tribe traded with settlers. Very very interesting history. There are hiking trails around the monument with overlooks to see Isle Royale as well and a dock into Lake Superior. Great place!

T. P.

One of the northland's must see attractions! The interpretive Park Rangers are extremely knowledgeable and passionate about their work from sharing the museum with visitors in the main center to giving guided walking tours of the trading post. Depending on the day, you may even get to watch a canoe being built by hand! I highly recommend joining one of the hour long tours so you can check out the inside of the Great Hall and kitchen.

A great free educational experience. Learned a ton about the fur trade and lifestyle of someone in the 1700s. The best part was the jolly, incredibly funny and knowledgeable canoe maker. He shared a ton of great information about how the fur trade worked, in a way and a level that my 7 and 9 year olds were very interested in. Loved the experience, informational video in the visitor center, and all the great people who make this park possible.

Becky Mudgett

Wonderful museum and great interpretations by actors. Be sure to take in the free movie and walk down to the ‘fort’ to step back in time.

T Nara

The people at each station that told us about the history were all fantastic! The short hike up to Mt. Rose was challenging but the view was worth it. So glad we stopped there! Picnic area is beautiful.

Michael Bogan

This is one of the best visitor /Heritage centers I've visited. The staff here were well versed in the history and information relevant to this site. During our visit there were to ladies behind the counter, one was a retired National Park Service biologist, from Alaska, and the other was a retired school principal from Texas. The facilities are amazing! filled with historical period correct artifacts and recreated items. One of those items was a birch bark canoe, built by staff, originally used by native Americans. The attention to detail of this canoe is phenomenal. This National Historic Monument is out of the way but worth the time and travel to visit.

Kienan Mick

Grand Portage National Monument gives a wonderful depiction of a crucial period of US and Anishinaabe history. The monument itself is collaboration between the US government and the Grand Portage tribe of the Anishinaabe people. The film is not to be missed, as it describes clearly the history of the fur trade, the voyageurs that worked with native people of the area, who shared with them the Grand Portage to Fort Charlotte on the Pigeon River, and the opening of trade to the West. The volunteers and the rangers who enact roles within the buildings that are on the site of the actual settlement of the North West Company provide a powerful sense of history.

Alicia Henderson

Watched very interesting video of the history of the area. Guided tours available.

Jameson Johnson

Very neat! Great guided tour of the land and buildings. Wonderfully and lovingly reconstructed. The views are amazing!

Ryan Just

A great experience for anyone interested in the history of the area. The staff is well informed and friendly.

Amanda Braith

I had no idea what you expect here and I LOVED it!! So interesting and I learned a lot. The staff talks to you as if they're actually from that time. The displays are super interesting; I liked being able to see and touch items. Some of the property was under construction so I couldn't explore everything but I would definitely come back in the future. Gorgeous views too!!

Jordan O. James

While there always seems to be construction occurring when I visit in the summer, almost all the staff is very friendly and the kids love running around and checking the place out. If your in the area it's a great stop for sure.

Danielle Main

Best National Monument ive been too! I was so impressed by how well they incorporated the indigenous people and their language, telling the story from more than the white perspective. My son 12 was thrilled and loved learning about canoe building and how they constructed their buildings.

Leaf Fael

Must see! This visitor center was amazing, fun and educational! Both indoor and outdoor viewing opportunities and both are recommended. Start with the video! Awesome Junior Ranger patch upon completion of their packet. Bring a coat and stable shoes for the outside portion. Plan on 2+ hours!

This place is well worth the visit. Wow! We were there the 2nd week of June, 2018. We watched the interpretive video about the history of the Ojibwe and fur trade in the area and it was so well done--honest, respectful, and balanced. The hike behind the interpretive center gave us beautiful views of the lake and a bird's eye view of the fort. We had lots of fun interacting with the actors and learned so much. We didn't expect this stop to be a highlight of our trip, but it definitely was. I was traveling with kids who were 16, 12, and 10 years old. We all recall our visit with fondness and enthusiasm.

Jamison Davis

Cool place to check out

Arkajyoti Misra

This is one of the rare places where native Americans and European settlers cooperated to establish a booming fur trade. The actual trading post is recreated authentically to provide the visitor with a window to the past. Every intricate details of the daily lives of the traders are on display and one can't but marvel at the way how people used to live a couple of centuries ago.

Sharaun Davis
