This Park is included in the category of State park.
You can enjoy time there with your family and friends. There is a fishing dock but there is also a lake where you can swim. And you can also bring food there to cook and enjoy. Just a heads up there is a long long if you arrive late but early you'll get in faster. Also if you go far enough close to the rocks it is not deep it is shallow, even for 7 yrs. For me it is REALLY fun. From Maryland it is a 2 hour drive but don't worry, it's worth it. Hope you enjoy it if you go!!!
We didn't stay at the park this time, but rather sailed our catamaran into Lake Canoy and anchored for the night. Beautiful sunset. Calm water with a nice breeze coming in off the Chesapeake Bay. Great anchorage but you have to be careful since there are plenty of shoals. Wouldn't be good for a boat that draws more than 3 or 4 feet.
One of the best parks in the state of Maryland. So much history, nature, and of course: fishing. The cabins are well maintained as well as the campgrounds and bathhouses. The beaches are also relatively clean and the bay is as inviting as ever. Catch a beautiful sunset on the.point or spend the day on the pier with a rod or two in the water. There's a special kind of peace to it.
Beautiful place to relax... I went with my friend and we did enjoy the whole park and museum..... I will be back soon again
Nice campground sites are spaced out nicely. Decent bathrooms (flush & showers) plenty of fishing (causeway, pier boat) kayaking or whatever you like. Nice beach areas including pet beach. And of course the historical sites/museum and nature center. Be sure you go through the correct gate when you get there! I got in the wrong one with the camper in tow. I just paid the 3 bucks!
Def a good spot for fishing. If your looking to get in touch with nature this is the spot bugs included bring your spray lol. But seriously great pier for fishing. My only complaint is went there one night and both gates were closed not allowing to get in to go the pier. Should be better managed to ensure people don't waste their time driving 2hrs almost to find out can't get on 24hr pier.
This is a beautiful park but we had the experience of seen a black snake in the middle of the rocks, close to swimming area. I assume was a Black Rat Snake
Good place to go and enjoy time with
Just beautiful & relaxing
It was nice. A bit dirty. Only bad pay was that the restrooms were closer and the ports John's say in the hot sun, not the shade
Solomon Islands are better.
The place is very good i stayed in a cabin with my family and before you sleep check the bunk beds and everywhere around the cabin because we found insects and the beach is good but their is to much jellyfish and it will sting like a sunburn and it itches
Held my wedding and reception at the pavilion. Rental was super cheap, no one came over and bothered us and I was able to setup the pavilion however I wanted (without adding holes or damaging anything)! The only issue we had were the giant mosquitos! Definitely bring some bug spray when you go!
Beautiful setting with camping.
It's alright for a cookout and a quick dip in the "beach area" but it can get super crowded so make sure to get there early. The dog beach is nice for dog owners and other than that there isn't much to do/see.
It was my first time but I did not like it at all I really do not recommend the spaces are super small
Great places to fishing and camp. Alot of blue fish, macro and blue craf
I love this place and come regularly.
Beautiful scenery and history. The lighthouse is under construction but will be really nice when finished. Locals say it is haunted from prisoners from the Civil War era.
An absolutely beautiful park. Came with a few friends to fish and watch the sunrise. We didn't manage to catch anything but the sunrise made the 2 hour drive worth our time.
We camped overnight in the park Lanier lane. Some highlights: 1) kayak rentals are cheap and easy and the lakes and wetlands make for beautiful scenery 2) well maintained campsite with fire ring 3) helpful staff at the camp store supplied and directed us on how to catch crabs from the pier. 4) Not crowded in the campgrounds during peak vacation season Cons: 1) the bugs are out of control. You need tons of repellent for the weekend 2) there are no pedestrian trails out of the park to the beaches 3) pet beach has nice water but lots of trash on the shore. Overall we will return because it is a 2 hour drive from DC to a peaceful park
Very nice quiet park with plenty of beaches and fishing areas. For the most part pretty clean but still evidence of litterbugs.
This was a surprise adventure planned by my husband! I wish we brought bathing suits but we played in the water anyway! There is a fort, a beach, camping, a lighthouse, a camp store, a playground, bathrooms and I'm sure more. We had a blast discovering the fort and the great little beach where we explored for "pirate treasure". My husband was drawing Xs for the kids to dig. The playground was small but the kids had fun. The only thing we noticed is there was some trash and not a lot of trash cans. Maybe it was because they were not in full summer season when we went. Also if you go to the fort, there is a path to the prison and when we were at the prison we found ticks crawling on us so bring spray. All in all we definitely want to return! We had a great time!
Great place to relax, fish and swim
People really take good care of this State Park. Will come again.
Amazing park on one of the most southern points in Maryland.!
Nice little day trip. The park facilities were closed during out visit but the areas are wonderful to walk around. The beach and picnic area are a lot of fun for the kids. Lots of awesome nature sightings.
Great place to stay camping, your camp space is very spacious, you have alot of space between you and the person next to you. It is peaceful, it is pet friendly in certain spots, has a nice beach to take you dog on. Only thing I wish is the lighthouse was open to take tours.
A little slice of Heaven.
The water was very clean, and there was very little people. Which we loved, we could play everywhere.
I recommend going over a week day, went on a Tuesday and had the whole place to ourselves! Great place!
Kickstands Up Motorcycle Riders rode to this historical wonder located at the southern end of the Maryland Peninsula. Gorgeous view and gorgeous roads. A must see.
The lighthouse and surrounded area is currently under construction. The water view is beautiful, and the area where the lighthouse is located was very windy and cold, colder than the St Mary's City area. There is a dog beach - I saw the sign but didn't stop by. It's a nice State Park with beach, dog beach, fishing pier, camping area and hiking trails.
Shrubby cover gives some privacy in spacious conifererous tree covered campsites on Hoffman's loop. Close by piers offer water access and a great view of the sunset. Nearby amenities outside of the park such as the Pax River Naval Air Museum, and many eateries.
I always love the outdoors.
Pretty, historic. Just don't stray into the tall grass or you might find ticks, chiggers, and poison ivy
It is beautiful here, just stunning nature all around. The view and sunsets are gorgeous. The bathhouse is new, but not very clean.
Overall good experience. Some construction but still ok.
One of the best campgrounds around. Great fishing, crabbing, and nature walks. Beautiful views and cool little tackle/marine shop. Would love to give them 5 stars, but go at the wrong time of year and the mosquitoes will wreck havoc on your trip.
It was very nice in May! There were a ton of bugs though and i imagine miserable in the summer.
Very expensive and parking is horrible on Sundays.
Very nice state park, with great camp grounds and great place to fish with a wonderful place to launch your boat. Great fishing pier as well.
Been going here since 1970. It's a great place for us Locals to enjoy and unwind from a week of work. Plus, it has the History of the Civil War.
Nice place not crowded.
Nice boat ramp
Big beautiful park. Great for fishing and family hangs.
So peaceful and beautiful.
Do not go camping here unless you like to be up all hours of the night with yelling from the drunken college party. There was a wild party with people throwing up in bathrooms and hanging out throughout the campsite and lots of yelling. Someone blasted music at 3am. At 4am I had enough and decided to pack everything up in the dark and leave. I drove here 3 hours with my 2 year old son and family. We had all been looking forward to this camping trip. I knew I couldn't enjoy myself with no sleep and couldn't go through another night of chaos. I tried calling a number they gave with the map with no answer. I am not sure if I called the right number. They do not make it clear on which number to call if there is an issue at the campsite.
Bath house could have been much cleaner.
We had the best ever time with Mr. Ralph Bloor at the museum! He is so knowledgeable, warm, has extremely good stories and a fabulous sense of humor. What a lucky day it was to catch him there on his volunteer day. Beautiful State Park, all the guides and Ranger were very friendly.
We pay but there was no parking
Just a lovely place to visit, and to go fishing.
I don't dislike it the fishing is great
It was was the best water is not to cold
This park is amazing. My dog loves the dog friendly beach and the fact we can take her with us in the rented canoes just finalizes how prefect this place is.
Very nice, clean and well taken care of.
I love to go here every year but this time around I did not like it the lady in entrance of the park was very rude she said the machine to pay wasn't working after I had already paid and said next time if you see me talking to another person just wait and pay with me in a very rude way there should be a sign that says out of service and next the bathroom and showers was close there was only 1 bathroom open which was really dirty and disgusting and it was really far from where I had parked.
Good place to come with family... Lots of things to do here...
Very family oriented.
Good for swimming and it is safe
I loved going here.. A place to calm down and unwind
Great location to watch beautiful sunset.
It's nice calm and beautiful
It is a beautiful park, disappointed by the people who use the park and just leave their trash on the ground by the beach areas and paths for the historic site's!
Very enjoyable day. Not enough handicap parking spot at the beach parking lot.
Neat place, nice sandy beaches, still warm water. Just too many flies. Bring aelectrial racket to xap them.
One of the most beautiful spots in Maryland. Camp at the state campground it’s lovely.
Good fishing spot
What is it with closing the beach bathrooms. Me and my family need to use it but evry time we are here the it's always closed. We see people have to leave with wet cloths. I asked a men that was sitting inside a truck and I ask him that if he could open the door for us and he siad " I can't because since there was to much people and people can make a mess in there and it could be unsafe". But that's why there's security and managers there. Next time I come hopefully they open the doors for the bathrooms. 1. It's really far 2. It's not a like a beach it's more like a fishing place. 3.to much flies 4.the bathroom are always closed. WHY CAN'T THEY CLEAN IT AND LET US IN. 5. It's kind of a waste of time but still a good place. 6. There sould be life guards there because last time we went there was a girl drowning and people thought it was a joke in till they saw it was ture. Also I saw perents leaving there baby's near the life guards seat and my mother thought that there's was no bady in there. What if the bady get stoleing or hurt it was crying , kicking it's feet and all red Cuz of the sun. So plz make this better than it is now.
Enjoyed our drive to Point Lookout from Virginia. We drove around the park and looked at campsite possibilities. Loved the fact that they have a dog beach! We'll be back!
Gorgeous dog friendly beach and ample room to set up beach towels. The water was clean and nice to swim/play in. Only gripe were the people grilling on the dog beach and getting upset when dogs came over to smell their food. They should really pick somewhere that isn't a dog beach to set up their picnics or be ready to share with the canine beach users. Otherwise it was a pretty chill place to hang out for a few hours.
Too many flies they bite crazyyyyy
Most unique camping spot in southern Maryland. Nice beach. Area is swampy though so it can get buggy in the summer.
Nice park overall. Clean and spacious camping areas located close to the water and near fishing, swiming, and your choice of pet-friendly or pet-free beaches, boat launch, and the old fort. This was my first visit to the park and I expected there to be more historical sites to explore... there was enough to make use of about an hour of the day. This park seems to be focused much more on recreational activities rather than historical / educational.
Great park. Very clean and well cared for
getting a doover all nice place to fish and cookout and family gatherings
Great camping in spring and fall, before and after bug season. Has first come first serve spots, but recommend reservations.
Beach, pier, cabins, placr to camp, big place, $5 per person entrance. Too expensive compare with many places, if tinish make sure fish has the right size otherwise enforcement will show up and fine you. Good luck.
Wonderful beach area!! On one side of the point there's a fishing pier and the other side has a playground and swimming area.
The best place to swim in the area. There are rock walls at the swimming beach and as long as there are no strong winds it is perfect to take my 4 year old son out with his floats. There are many beautiful quartz and other stones there as well.
good place to go with the family
I love this beach! The campgrounds are great! This is the second time I come here and I love it! They have many activities for the kids! The staff is amazing! The water is warm, not like ocean city, the waves are not that strong. I saw a lot of bad reviews about jelly fish, but I have not experienced that so far! The dog beach is really quiet and very nice!
Family oriented nice clean friendly u can fish an crab but need make sure u have you lic.. have bathroom an shower's there. Staff is so helpful an friendly.
If you like being outdoors, and around water this is the place for you.
Lots of history. Great local places to eat and plenty to do outside on the water.
State Park gets packed early so get there early to get a spot it was nice
Love this place coming back in the fall
Beach very long and narrow. Water surprisingly deep with soft bottom. Plenty of shade under the trees. Shower facilities convient. Civil War for interesting.
beautiful place . with a nice extension and a spectacular view
Great food and service!
Lighthouse under construction, though beach along the Potomac River is clean and relaxing
Beautiful park with a great view of the Lighthouse
Great experience, good luck on our fishing trip
Beautiful spot, but I'll change it to 5 stars when someone gets out there and cleans up all of the garbage. If you're going to charge people to enter the park, use some of the money collected for trash cleanup.
Awesome family area
Have visited since I was a child and now I bring my own children. Always a good time. Plenty to do, well maintained facilities and grounds. Friendly and informative staff. Great time every time!
Very nice place
This is my favorite park to take my children too .
Live. love.
Beautiful spot does get crowded so I suggest if you want a bench to eat, a parking spot not too far and a grill get here extra early cause lines be hectic.starts even before it opens.otherwise it’s a great place to enjoy be with the family and See the wonderful view.
Great place to visit and hike the area.
It's good to see that Maryland is keeping places like this preserved and open to the public., Very clean and beautiful place to visit.
Awesome park especially when it's stormy and the waters rough very scenic.
Awesome sunset, just gorgeous!
WISH I COULD HAVE CAUGHT OTHER THAN "CAT FISH" & SKETS ?
Fantastic
Went here a couple weeks ago. It wasn't overcrowded but it took some time for us to find a spot to have a little section of beach. The wooded area is nice and shady and just as pretty as the water, in my opinion. It has a lot of picnic tables and a playground. There is also a lighthouse and other amenities I believe but we didn't use any of them.
Its a nice park to share with all family, and Friends, I feel happy to be there
Beautiful setting and well maintained.
Come early! The park closes when filled to capacity (3000 people). Most stay all day. Rangers begin turning vehicles away at about 1030.
Love fishing and camping is great
I don't recommend because Is a lot of water stock on the woods produce mosquito bites recommend repellent but for new born kids get sick for mosquito bite
I used to come here with my parents as a kid, so I've definitely got some nostalgia when it comes to this place. if I'm (trying) to speak objectively, this place can be great, depending on what you're coming here for. If you're coming to fish, that seems like the popular thing to do here. There's a pier, a boat launch, and plenty of shore space. I'm not much of a fish guy, but given how many people fish here, I assume its a good spot for it. The park allows for fishing at night too. There is a swimming designated area and beach, and plenty of picnic tables and grills nearby. I remember there being tons of jellyfish as a kid, though I still had fun in the water. There are kayak and canoe rentals available. There is some history: the lighthouse itself (currently under renovation) and some civil war stuff, but nothing amazing, at least not to me. There are decent photo opportunities here. At the right time of year, on the right night, this is a decent place to try astrophotography. The milky way can be photographed here, with good technique. In the evenings, in the warmer months, beware: the mosquitoes are real at this park.
Amazing park very kids/family friendly and their staff are amazing the scenic routes and other activities that they have are also amazing to enjoy while you visit this location.
Park is beautiful and quiet, but have a lot of mosquitos, which is not in their control
Awesome Park. 11/10
Awful. Let's start with the things beyond control. The mosquitoes and biting flies were terrible, and swarmed us on every beach. The campground itself is literally on a swamp, so there's no walking to anywhere without following the road. Now the things the staff couldn't or wouldn't fix. We paid for 30a service. Most of the sites were on 20a breakers at the main, even though the breakers at the sites were 30. You're never going to squeeze 30 amps through a 20 amp breaker. The staff made excuses about why they couldn't fix it. Multiple calls and stops at the office yielded lots of, "you have to talk to someone else" responses. The water fill station nearest our site didn't work. One maintenance guy told us he had been complaining for TWO YEARS about it. Nothing was open except the beaches. We went to both camp stores during "normal business hours" and both were closed. The office also closed periodically for no reason in the middle of the day. If you're looking to come here for the Civil War artifacts, don't bother. The prison area is fenced off so you can't even walk around. There are a few replica tents set up. But the museum...surprise...was closed during regular hours. Huge, huge disappointment.
You could do fishing swinging or camping
Beautiful historic Maryland State Park. Great for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, camping, and relaxing. Friendly staff and clean amenities. We have also camped here and had a great time. Spent a day just relaxing on the Bayside beach, a day exploring the water trails and a day taking in all the history. The Marshland Nature center is a really cool place that host activities for children and adults. The Potomac side beaches are the most heavily used. On any given weekend you will find a beautiful mix of people celebrating with food, music, friends and family. It's worth the small park entry fee and then some. Please remember to leave only footprints behind and help preserve this natural beauty.
Will have to come back! Beautiful park!
Is a good place to go fishing , cookout and swimming.
I love it , very good for destress .
This place is the best place in Maryland for going to to the beach, camping, and fishing.
Nowhere to park if your fishing at the pier. There are families that have taken over this park, leaving trash, parking anywhere just to access the beaches. Weekends are really bad. Dumpsters and trashcans available everywhere. It is a shame.
Great place to go for a beach that’s not too far and much less crowded than the eastern shore. Some areas have life guards. Those same area can get quite noisy as there are lots of kids, as well as different music. We choose a beach a little more secluded with no lifeguards, but also much less noise. Make sure you get there early. We found out the hard way that parking gets full very fast. Once full, you are told to turn around and won’t be able to come back until the next day. There are a couple of stores there with some necessities in case you forgot something. Overall very nice “local” beach. Minus one star for the parking situation.
Parking is non existant on a weekend. The history of the place is very cool but unless you go first thing in the morning you have to walk miles
Nice place for a picnic and fishing.
Great place to learn more about Civil War history. Really neat museum and beautiful monuments.
Nicely kept up. Large comfy camping spots. Excellent staff. Tiny well stocked camp store.
Its so beautiful at sunset..watching my friend fish ans watching the view was just a great evening
Great spot to fish but.... there’s so many cownose rays
Great day fishing. Be sure to have your coastal fishing license and only keep fish that are big enough. The Park Rangers and DNR are checking.
Favorite place to be with your family
Relaxing place.
I love this place
It has way too many rules that are unnecessary like not to go out on the pier at night or not to night fish. Also if you have a boat and you going to pur in the water. The floating ramps are closed. They are being reconstructed but it has been like that for months. After all the view is amazing. If you do go camping here... try going on weekdays. It's so quiet, no one is around. If you have a camper and your going to camp in it there is a camp space just for you! Over at the camper ground the water and the electrical hooks up to the RV. HAVE FUN!
Love the outdoors, nice campsites, alot of history there
Did some fishing and crabbing along the causeway - one side was the Chesapeake Bay and the other was the Potomac River. Didn't catch anything but it was fun and in a beautiful setting. Very peaceful. Went swimming in the Potomac River which was awesome. Loved the Tulip Loop of the campground where we spent 3 nights in our Travel Trailer. So quiet and private - had a great weekend - we'll definitely be returning here!
My kids love going to this beach and my husband enjoys fishing here. It's never crowded. The beach is also dog friendly. Only downside to me is that its not free it does cost to enter.
Very nice park. We visited in early Spring so we did not experience the insects that other reviews complain of. Campground staff is very friendly. They allowed us to "visit/explore" the campground loops so as to map out our favorite sites. We inspected restrooms of each loop and all were very clean & tidy. The cabins are very nice too. We especially liked the pier access to the cove area. If you are a fisherman this is the place for you!
An awesome riding experience. I love the water! They need to add some snack shops!
MD's best sunsets can be captured right here!
I love the place
A beautiful park with lots to do.
It's great to go there on weekdays but not weekends (it gets crowded). Plenty of picnic tables and shaded area. You can bring food and charcoals to grill. They have bathrooms with showers and porta potty on site. The price is less than 10 bucks per car. They also have a long pier if you enjoy fishing. They have an area for pet lovers as well!
The fishing and meeting new people!
Relatively easy 1.8 mile hike to the beach but get there earlier enough to have time for the walk back.
Beautiful place to go to enjoy a nice summer day. Great views
It's a nice park to come spend time with your family.
Number 1 Fishing Pier In Maryland For The Share Variety And Quantity.
Big, open sky, ocean access, great place for Family gathering together to enjoy being together! Lots of picnic space, grills, a small shop for forgotten cookout essentials, and restrooms and indoor and outdoor showers!
Beautiful and not busy place to visit!
This is one of the most wonderful places to go
Love it . Great place to go sailing. Not as choppy in bay , as upper parts of Chesapeake bay.
Loveeeee itttttt.
The family enjoys going to the beach.
My parents used to take us here when I was little. Only thing i remember was the jelly fishes. Thought it would be a nice and close beach to take my kids for the day. Boy was I wrong! This beach is infested with SO many flies and they bite! They have tons of horse flies as well, and they too, BITE! If you're not in the water, then get ready to be attacked. So many swamps everywhere. This beach is dirty. Take the extra hour or 2 drive to a different beach.
Drove forever to get there but it was worth it
