REVIEWS OF C&O Canal IN Maryland

Thought users of Google Maps might want to see some old photos of the C & O Canal and related structures. Many of these photos I am posting are from Civil War era (including Mathew Brady/Levin Handy, Library of Congress) to early 20th century. The photos were compiled in the book, "Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, Old Picture Album" by Thomas F. Hahn. This early photo shows Lock #3 looking down canal towards Rock Creek. The Veterinary pictured leased this building and catered to treating mules used to tow the canal boats. The building of course is long gone. Worth noting is that the Veterinary was originally the Duvall Foundry which provided iron works associated with the construction of the canal's structures and boats.

Beautiful canal to look down on, but I was afraid to walk through it because of potential mosquitos during the summer. It's also mostly grown over with plants, so not much water in the summer.
