REVIEWS OF Assateague State Park IN Maryland

Cheryl W.

Loved seeing the horses roaming around the park. Visitor center shows films periodically. Informative area for both young and old. Great visit to this national Park!

ishwor marahatta

It is a beautiful island only 25 min away from ocean city. They have wild horse and beautiful beach. The parking was little confusing buut there was a nice gentleman behind me who helped me to figure out how to pay for it. It is 5 dollar for out of state resident. You can put money in an envelope and drop it on the Honor box. We enjoyed our time both at the park and the beach.

Dave English

Beautiful wild beaches. The water on the water on the bay side is much warmer and calmer. It's perfect for kayaking or paddle-boarding. It's nice seeing all the wild horses too!

Robbin Walker

We love Assateaque State Park. We never go into Ocean City for the beach anymore. Having the convenience of the bath house and the camp store is great and not crowded like OC

Joe Cacciapaglia

A wonderful Nature Preserve on the Maryland seashore. Lots of wild horses roam the area. Camping, biking, kayaking. The only negative is the hordes flies that bite. Bring plenty of insect repellent.

Brycen Marner

Beautiful, uncrowded beaches. Lots of horses. Excellent shower houses. Friendly camp hosts.

Sharon Rogers

Dream of a lifetime! I have been waiting to come here since I was in elementary school and Read the book Misty of Chincoteague! Camping, beautiful beaches, wild ponies running on the beach free!!! Park is open 24 hours. Campfires allowed even on the beach at night!! Nice family vacation or for singles!

David Hamilton

Great park haven't camped here yet but plan to.

David Henry

Beautiful beach. Well maintained. Life guards. Surfing, body surfing, relaxing. Snack shack, change rooms, restrooms, gift shop, camping. Anything you would need.

Debra Bilby

It was awesome. Love how clean it is and how friendly people are. The wild horses are beautiful.

Wendy Garone

I loved this park! Sites are nice beachfront or wooded sites. Horses roam the entire property and are beautiful. I would definitely come back again.

Gwen Parsons

The beach was nice, but expensive to get on. I really don't think one should pay to get on a beach. Very crowded. We did see several horses, which was cool. Probably wouldn't do it again.

Cecilia Garrett

I'm not sure what the hubbub is about. Not to be a downer it was pretty, it was cool to see the horses but you cannot interact with them and there were three as you see in the picture chilling by the building just being horses. I guess I'm not a horse person and that's okay. It was offseason so we did have the beach to ourselves. Nice ride over from Ocean City

Lisa Horwitz

Visit this park 2 times a year. Love it here! I learn something new from a park ranger everytime. Everyone is friendly and loves talking about all animals and marine live native to this park.

Shanna Eckenroad

As always Assateague never disappoints! One of the cleanest beaches!

Brian Tantlinger

Love it here. But if going for more than one day turn right after bridge and go to federal side and get the week pass cheaper

Matt Mullen

Wild Horses! Park is well kept and the visitor center was very cool, with some exhibits for the kids (including a touch pool with different aquatic wildlife), an informative video about the wild horses, and staff willing to answer questions. Best part was obviously the horses. We explored for over an hour and finally got lucky and found a pack of 4 horses.

Melisa LaBadie

We've been camping here for 20 years or more and still love it every time. The showers have been improved which is great. The sites have plenty of room and are usually pretty close to the bath house. A quick drive to Ocean City.

Alex Vogel

A fun place for camping on the beach. The bathrooms are very clean and the island is well maintained. A great spot for all ages.

Bobby Johnson

Nice, quiet beach. Feral horses are cool to observe. Looks like a nice place to camp. But $20 entry fee isn’t worth it if you’re only staying one day. They should offer day passes instead of week passes.

Jennifer Houghtaling Deleon

Beautiful quiet, clean, beach area with indoor showers and restaurant. After labor day we even got to bring our dog. And if you're fortunate enough to see the wild horses, they make the experience that much more special. Just don't get close to them. :)

Stephen Bozeman

This park is amazing! The public beach is huge. Great bathrooms. Concession bar. Very clean and well kept. The campground is huge and very close to the beach. And of course the wild ponies are amazing.

Barbara Crider

The ocean is beautiful. The new bathhouses are gorgeous. Unfortunately, they are slimy, dirty and covered with dead bugs and live ones. The outside showers would be great, but they are filthy, every day, every time. We will only spend 2 weeks there this year and I dread every shower. Just gross.

Zack Wegman

Beautiful scenery. It's incredible. Will come back

Joseph Alfonsi

Wonderful day spent away from the crowds. Very beautiful beach, so easy to get to. Does cost money to get in, but worth it.

Carlson Jones

Beautiful beach. Drove through the park and actually saw the Ponies grazing right next to the road. Yeah they are just Ponies but the fact that they are wild and roam free there is absolutely amazing. It is an experience that you will remember. Can't wait to come back.

Kathy Davenport

The park is beautiful and the campground is steps to the ocean. I love watching the horses roam free. They do get a little curious around the campers. Great place to camp. The sites are primitive but the have nice clean bathhouses to use on each loop of the campground.

Carolyn Hurt

We have been coming to camp at the state park here for several years. We have had both good and bad experiences camping here, but the campground itself is amazing, the hosts are always very friendly, and any negative things are more related to weather etc. A tip would be that it tends to get very windy, so make sure your tent or other sleeping accommodations can withstand that wind. We have had to retire more than one tent after strong winds broke our tent poles. Also, the horses will roam through your campsite, so don't plan to leave anything out unattended. Bring a flashlight to look at the ghost crabs on the beach at night.

Chris Powers

Words cannot describe the beauty here... This place is so special to me! Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and book your reservations asap for an experience you will never forget! This was our first time putting up our new 'yurt' tent as well! Pictures included. If you like the beach, nature trails, camping, wildlife, including wild ponies and deer, (although we never saw any deer) and birds, birds, birds, or rivers teeming with life, you will find something to enjoy here at Assateague State Park!

Ren Semans

Again another place I can't get enough. The wind was whipping today and it was perfect for the heat. Never made it in the water...was told it was pretty chilly. Tried out my new chair and umbrella. Umbrella was broken and the chair was not a beach chair! In spite of my peeves, the beach was wonderful. No loud music... plenty of room to stretch out. Slowing down to see the horses is always interesting. What's even more interesting is watching the people disregarding the posted signs stating do not get to close to the horses because they kick, bite and will eat your food. Last year one time there, my marine son was late coming back to the beach. When he finally got back to me he apologized for taking so long. Seems a horse wouldn't let him out of the car!

Ken Siemasko

The staff at the campground with excellent they have all new bathrooms basically camping directly on the beach

Wendy M

This our 2nd year coming to the beach and we Love it here!!! Very friendly people and family oriented!

Michaela

This place is so beautiful but we experienced a horrible time with the flies. Its was everywhere and bites a lot. We have to leaves early just because of it

Randy Sensenig

Cold and windy weekend this time around. Always seems to be windy when we camp here. Another dislike is all the little seed pods with VERY VERY sharp needle-like points. I love that you can camp close enough to the ocean to hear the waves from your campsite. Bathrooms and showers are decent.

Shelley Elebash

True natural beauty gem! So peaceful & just a wonderful cathartic experience for the soul. Lots of ponies!!

Ray Chen

We got there Sunday, early afternoon and parked at the Assateague Island Visitor Center to prep for our search for horses! This is a fantastic spot to start your walk, run, or biking as you'll cross over the Verrazano Bridge and see the lovely views. Be warned that it can get VERY WINDY as you cross, so make sure your hat is secured and your small children are tethered to you. We were lucky enough to see a small pack of horses (about 6) grazing pretty close to the beach. Definitely check out the beach while you're there!

Beverly Hendricks

Worth a visit especially for those who read Margaurite Henry's horse books as a child. We spent time with friends at the campground which was very nice. The Assateague wild horses could be seen hanging around all over the place. They maintain the horse population at about 125 through birth control. The beach has beautiful nearly white sand.

Josie Usko

Love it here! Have been coming here for the past 7 years. Friendly people, uncrowded beaches, and those beautiful horses!

Rachel Bonas

It was amazing. We were there 3 days 2 nights of which every single day we saw horses. It was so interactive that the horses ate our dinner one night

Kristin Carlson

Great concept..was so happy to go visit an Island to see wild horses..but as we later found out..population quite low and we only ended up seing?? 5 on entrance to park. We did go to the beach though ..busy yet lovely..lifegards constantly alert ..having to deal with emergency in short time we were there

Ann smith-reiser

We got a perfect weekend. Great camping spot steps from the beach. Sun and 78 with a nice breeze and no problems with flies or mosquitos! Warm days, cool evenings, campfire, stars. Spacious, clean bathroom. Horses were around but not in my site! Great spot. Just gorgeous!

Brian Meagher

Very clean and well run Maryland State Park. Showering and bathrooms are spacious and fairly clean. There's a nice snack bar with lots of menu options typical of a beach stand. Also a small store of souvenirs and camping needs. Lots of wild ponies to see everywhere.

Subba reddy Alla

Omg, this is amazing state park that every nature lover should explore. There are a lot here, to explore and best place to relax. If you don't like sun, probably it's not for you. But, it's worth if u would have good precaution followed. And crab catching is so much fun

Mm Qqq

Amazing place to camp. Gorgeous beaches . Amazing wildlife. Campsite bathhouses are CLEAN gorgeous tiled new hot water showers and ckean flush toilets .....the public bathouses had cool water and were not as nice but still a LOT more offered than many state parks.....EMPLOYEES FRIENDLY and very knowledgeable and helpful.....all around terrific location .....national park further down ....vault toilets icy cold showers ....but access to the bayside areas for crabbing kayaking etc

ken shuey

Camping at the beach doesn't get any better than this. Price is right. Great scenery.

Kate Bornschein

This park is great! The ocean beach is beautiful with ample room to find yourself a quasi private spot. Lots of shells wash up that make for a great time shell hunting. Still, the entry to the water is smooth. And have I mentioned the wild horses?! Such a pleasure to watch these beautiful animals go about their business. Tons of fun for kids and adults.

Cynthia Hernandez

It was our first time here and beach itself was beautiful along with the wild horses! The only thing is I wish the bathrooms and showers were cleaner they were gross and dirty but other than that we had a good experience

karishma kamal

A nice place to go to if you want some relaxing time. Got to see the horses which the island is known for while driving through. The beach is also very less crowded and quiet with all the facilities.

Daniel Buben

Recommended strongly over the national park or city parks because of much better facilities. The $6 / adult entrance fee seems high, but you pay for a nicer calmer experience. The visitor center on the mainland side of the bridge is also quite interesting.

Elika Rosilawati

Beautiful beach & pretty clean facility. We were lucky to see some mustangs along the way.

Annita Eleanor

A place all animal admirers & wildlife preservationists should visit at least once. A lovely place to go kayaking, biking & camping. There is also a beach you can get a yearly pass for or pay per visit. The wild ponies here are the main attraction as they're a wonderful reminder of how nature can unite people to enjoy nature.

Chris Ballantyne

Great park and beach. Next year I'm getting the permit to drive my truck on the beach! Horses are amazing.

K H

Go early or late to avoid crowds. It's never really crowded. The horses are a hit or miss depending on their whims.

Madison Johnson

Bring lots of bugspray if you walk on the trails! The horses were gorgeous. We saw at least ten in one day.

OLGA VURA

Beautiful park! Amazing wildlife and nature! The beach area is not as nice as used to be! Too much trash around , too many dogs! Unfortunately, owners do not care too much to clean up after their pets!

Heather Bivona

Beautiful beach & horses. Soft sand, no rocks. Long breaking waves for long rides in on boogie board, bodysurfing or surfing. Lifeguards on some parts of the beach. It's a carry in/carry out state park. No garbage cans. They have bags at entrance for people to take, so they don't leave any garbage behind. It's a shame that, some people don't know how to clean up after themselves. Not sure if smoking is allowed, but people left butts on beach & witnessed a guy smoking.

Heidi Knode

Didn't pay the 20 bucks to go into the park and didn't see any horse's but I'm sure it's hit or miss. The drive is very pretty..

Brian P

It will be a shame if they shut this place down. Very neat. The control and cost to enter is kind of annoying.

Dennis Nardi

The park was beautiful. The beach is huge, and there's a large portion that is essentially only accessable if you are camping. The bathroom facilities were top notch. We also saw a ton of horses wandering though the park.

Lorraine Jordin

Great place to visit to regain perspective and remember God's glory!

Fred F.

Lovely scenery, loved my century ride from Salisbury to Assateague and back... Going back next year

Ryan Murray

I didn't really get to visit the State Park very much but the entire area is extremely beautiful, I mean, wild horses right on the ocean? That in and of itself is worth the trip from anywhere throughout the U.S. I've heard, from speaking with park rangers, that they do not any longer allow alcohol on the State Park side but still do in the National Island Seashore area.

Bianca S

One of the more lovely and natural beaches in the DMV. On my last visit here not only did I see wild ponies and jelly fish but a sting rays! Overall just a gorgeous natural beach that us boardwalk free.

Mike Alvarez

Beautiful place to beach camp and surf or fish, lots of birds, horses, some deer. Gets pretty full in summer but fall is the golden time here

Rachel Snell

It was $20 to park on the National Park side with cool trails. Got to see the wild horses and some herrings. Some of the beaches on this side can be extremely private and peaceful, at least after labor day.

Bernadine Minnier

Horses seen right away. Was windy with sand blowing but I loved it.

Joe Sorrentino

Great beach for skim and boogie boarding. Excellent for biking and hiking. Wild horses!

Anne Carroll

Gorgeous setting, amazing ponies and birds, varied and fascinating landscapes. Trails are very short but online narrated tours add a lot of value with interesting info suitable for both adults and kids. We'll go back!

Nancy P

I love it here. Peaceful, and you can buy food,an a gift shop as well. Bathroom facility. Out of state 6$ per person instate 4$.enjoy!!

John Schilling

Very nice, clean beach. Not too many people. Didn't see any ponies. Food little visitors center. Air conditioned, but no munchies or pop machine. Water fountains and bathrooms tho. Really a nice place to kill three hours

James Hurler

Been coming here since I was a kid. Wish they still did the campfire sing-along on the beach though.

Montu Shah

Great time with family. Like camping and trip to the beach? Go here you'll love it.

Timmy Jo Given

Very pristine, natural outdoor spot to visit and take in the sights and sounds of the barrier island. The beach is great as are the walking trails. I wish there had been a little more space in which to park at each walking trail; we had to forgo the dune trail due to finding that parking lot all filled up. Hoping to encounter wild horses, we only saw evidence of their presence until traveling the main access road on and off of the island. The horses were in the road! So the cars had to slow down and sometimes stop altogether for the grazing horses. What an amazing experience! I hope to return soon, and often.

KNT O

Love this place. Only 4 stars because they have only one electric loop (hard to get into) but otherwise no hookups. But the bathhouses are great (on the new loop H as of 2019, former loop I) too. But I guess if they had full hookups it might be even harder to get into than it already is if you don't plan ahead.

Sophia Lejtman

Great adventure! Gorgeous sunset and stargazing on a clear day. Had a BBQ by the bay side. Be sure to hide your snacks; the ponies are not shy about helping themselves!

Lindsey Allen

Everything was great. We came in after hours and just checked in with the rangers in the morning. The oceanside beach was beautiful, and yes, we saw a few ponies! Lots of birds and deer as well. Definitely recommend - and it's cheap!

Wendy Fu

Love the beach and wild horses in this park. $20 per car to get in and park, but the pass is good for seven days. Water is not clear, but it's not dirty either. There are sand bars that go out pretty far, so it's like having a huge pool that you can safely swim around in.

Corey

We loved this park. We visited for two nights and wished we had two weeks. The only down side is the lack of shade, the poor quality fire wood for sale and that it. The pros include a fantastic location, wonderful beach, interesting wild life (birds, hares, ponies, deer, butterfly's etc) , great facilities (fantastic bathrooms, sites and shops) and great staff, one thing we really loved was the out door showers and built in dish washing locations. When we checked in the staff was very help full giving us pleanty of information on the park, the horses, our site the beaches and the store. We then found our site with great beach access and close to the dish washing area (a great feature more parks need) and bathrooms. We then spent the next two days hiking the beach, watching the ponies, swimming ,and generally having a great time. Some good things to know are that the park sells ice (big bags, small and blocks) and fire wood(not very good), the ponies can be a bit assertive and may toss your site, the sun is intense plan accordingly. If you don't mind not having life guards swim by your camp site much less crowded same great beach. Another recommendation is to get up to catch sun rise, and at sun set walk the beach often the ponies are down to cool off very cool to see. I cannot recommend this place enough we will be back.

Chelly Pazdan

Nice, clean beach. Bath house on site along with concessions. Easy parking and short walk to the beach, plus the wild ponies!!!

Marcus Wagner

Nice beach for shells. Be careful driving cuz the horses wander around. Bring cash for 10 dollar entry and parking

T AA

Very serene place to go and enjoy. They offer beach, trails, hiking etc. Their is a fee to enter. They have wild horses roaming around. Beautiful place.

Larry Rogers

Great food facility, shop and restrooms. Horses make it even cooler

Robert Reeves

Camping is available both here at the state park and a little further South at the National Park Service maintained National Seashore. If you have the choice of one over the other, I'd highly recommend the state park for the hot showers and proximity to the causeway for visits to the mainland. The closer the campsite is to the ocean, the fewer bugs you'll have to suffer through.

Renee Morinelli

Beauty at its best. The horses were magnificent and free

Juniper

Beautiful location, very well kept. Could easily spend all day walking or biking around to see all the wild ponies, deer, and birds.

Eduardo Cruz

Pretty nice experience camping at the beach. Definitely make sure to bring something for shade to keep you cool.

Dean J

Great place to sightsee and spot horses if you are lucky and they are close. Nice free beach to spend the day. Parking can be tough but someone is always leaving.

Jason Thompson

Beautiful State Park and National Shoreline. The best way to see the mid-atlantic coast line with limited man made influence. It has wild horses, beautiful beaches, nature walks, bike trails, water sports, fishing, rv sites, camping on the beach, camping by the bay, over sand vehicles, etc. It also has it's fair share of bugs so be prepared, but if there is a nice off shore wind the bugs are pushed closer to the Bay and aren't too much of a bother on the beach. What it doesn't have are the typical beach town tourist traps but if that's what you're in to Ocean City, MD is 20 minutes north.

Abby Gray

Very buggy biting flies and mosquitos put a damper while camping on one of our last beautiful natural beaches. Wild Horses can be scary as you try to make it to the bath house in low light. Mostly a wonderful location. Keep your food stowed.

Casey W

I took a left at the fork in the road on the island. When I remember Assateague, it will always feel like it was a beautiful dream, not because of the horses on the beach (unfortunately there was none while I was there) but because the shift of pace felt so good. Going from being on the boardwalk to this calm beach was a wonderful choice. I went on a Tuesday afternoon. I believe the gift shop is closed tuesday and wednesday.

Mohsin Shabbir

Great peaceful place. If you want to come to the beach away from the crowd, this is the place to be! Catch a glimpse of some wild horses as well.

Kyle Pumphrey

So cool! The wildlife is great and the beach is readily available. There is a really great bike path, and supply trucks come through the campsites every evening. The day use area is crowded, but the beaches accessible from the camping loops are open.

Carolyn Dubble

End of summer Assateague island camping always the best time of the season!

hannah stone

Super fun to camp... camping is very private people there are so nice. They even have out door showers they are super clean. Also they have electricity in certain spots. Bath houses have electricity and outlets to charge anything. Beaches there are super nice and not crowded just watch for horse poop and wild roaming horses

Sabina Thorblad

The beach is absolutely beautiful! We did see a few horses driving in the park. Would love to come back and spend more time there.

Nicole Leigh

Absolute heaven!! So clean and peaceful. Loved getting to see the horses in their natural habitat. This will definitely be a recurring trip!

Cody Dietrich

absolutely beautiful beach. much better than ocean city. and you can to come close to wild horses. so awesome

Brian Stupi

Great beach, parks, views. The rangers are very helpful. I look forward to returning to see the horses.

Leah Watts

Assateague island is probably the best beach to go to. It's not as popular as ocean City to which there lies the best part.... It's never that crowded!!!! Plus it's much cleaner.

Lisa R Long

Please remember when visiting this beautiful park that there is only one roadway in and out, if you must stop to take pictures please be considerate of others by not stopping in the middle of the road holding up traffic and please do not touch or feed the wildlife. Great park please help us keep it this way.

Cissy71

What a magical place! Rustic and lovely. You get almost no cell service so it's easy to unplug. Can't wait to go back.

John Wilson

Clean and beautiful. Maybe not the most friendly at times. Don't be in any hurries here. All the facilities you need for sure....showers and toilets are nice and plentiful. Upon leaving, if you are RV'ing, if you leave near check out time, you will be an hour or more emptying tanks and trash. Best to leave early to beat that rush. One water filling spot, one emptying spot. That's it. And the line can take hours. Other than that, beautiful place for no hookup, nature camping with wild ponies as close to a beach as you can get. Will be 5 star for some for sure, not so much for others. My 4 stars is purely for the times we spend in lines. And maybe that's on me, not the place. I keep coming back?!

Zully Keen

It is worth every penny. The beach is beautiful! Bathrooms with showers, are clean. Umbrellas and chair rentals are available. The visitor center have great information and a small museum and shop in it. Ask to watch the movie it is very informative. We even got to see wild horses and dolphins.

Kimberly Latham

We camp here every year and love the way it feels to be so far away from everything. Falling asleep to the sound of the waves, watching the sunrise on the ocean and set on the bay. There was a foal sleeping at the site this year :) there are a few nature centers and a playground for little ones.

Sky Striker

Really pretty, but overcrowded and full of people. Good luck getting entry/parking during peak season.

William Shoul

Spent the day enjoying the park. From the beaches, the trails, and the campsite the park is very nice and enjoyable. Make sure to pick up after yourself as you do not want to cause any harm to the horses. The bathrooms at the campground were clean and taken care of. Most importantly my kids enjoyed their stay.

Stella N

Beautiful park with one of the best visitor center I've ever seen. Definitely worth a trip. Super interesting

Monica Erhard

A great place to camp. Bathhouses are clean and roomy. It is great to be on the beach and see the wild ponies all of the time.

Monkey Pig

Clean. Safe. Has youth program. Hosts does a good job keeping the place clean. Rangers do their rounds up till 2200. But very crowd during Friday- saturday. Wall to wall kids. But the ponies are worth it. Ocean too cold to swim in June.

Adam Wilson

Great vacay spot beautiful well kept beach and state park

Christopher Miller

This is a fresh change from the hub-bub of Ocean City to the North. There is still a crowd by the lot and by the lifeguard chairs, but walk a few hundred yards and you'll have space and peace to call your own. The sand and water is plentiful and a super place to watch the local surfers home their skills. Don't count on seeing the Horses, but don't be too surprised if they pay a visit looking for an easy meal. DONT FEED THE HORSES! Take pics from a distance and give them their space.

Angie Auth

Beautiful State Park. Always see the ponies when I visit and really cool when they run down on the beach although beach-goers need to stay clear. Nice having a cafe, restrooms and showers on site too. Get there early during the summer season as it gets very crowded. Staff at the park are wonderful.

Derek Springer

Assateague is beautiful and much better than I expected. We came up here to spend on the beach mid afternoon til evening. Beach was very clean and sand was very soft. Least going in September beach wasn't crowded at all. Having a fire on the beach was great too. Seeing the wild horses was very cool to see. Highly recommend if you are ever in the area.

sheel shah

Loved the breeze..openness. the experience was great. We liked the cleanliness of the bathrooms and the proximity to our camp site. We could easily access beach and bathrooms at night without fear. The place is safe. A good family place.

Toni Sterling

Great park. National side $20 parking for one week to see horses. State side $6/person out of state (free for veterans), mostly just offers the beach. Beach on national side is less crowded. Cannot access hiking trails from state side. Nice boat launch area with bathroom.

Yani Yanev

I have been coming here since I was born. Definitely a place worth going to.

mike fissel

So I paid 90 bucks for a sand off road permit only to find that only about 2 miles of the beach were open to vehicles and the back road was also closed. Used to be able to drive about 15 miles to the VA state line on both the beach and they back road. How sad they've restricted access and raised the prices by 300 percent. Just isn't worth the time or drive anymore unless you are a hiker

Sharon Kurland

The beach and the waves kept my family busy all day. Saw a few horses and a Mama and baby deer too. Wonderful place wonderful day

Christine Goida

My family would vacation here when I was a kid and now my mom and dad volunteer as camp hosts for a whole month during the summer. I visit as often as possible (I'm from PA so it's a 4-5 hour drive). Wild horses + camping + beach = heaven! My daughter calls it The Beach as if there is no other one! The bathhouses are new as of the last few years. There are outdoor and indoor showers. Be sure to protect yourself from the sun. We wear UV shirts, it's not worth the bikini look. You will burn. Wear good bug spray once the sun starts to set, the mosquitos can be a pain! But the campfire and stars are worth it! You can see so many stars on the beach at night, great telescope spot. Listen to rules from camp host & rangers.. keep your food where ponies can't get it (they are way too smart), stay back from ponies and other wildlife, FOLLOW ONE WAY and SPEED LIMIT signs!! I can't tell you how many people we saw going wrong way and too fast this year. Dangerous for little kids on bikes and wildlife. The state park is beautiful!! We love it! I hope you come to camp and share in the beauty of nature with us!!

Ken Bennett

Best beach around! Clean, clear water and great gentle waves for the kids. The wild horse experience is a must see. Your family will loce this Natiinal.Park....only $20 for the whole week...a muat go/do in DE.

Kevin Pelley

Best place to stay on the Maryland beach. Our site was rustic with no electricity, water or sewer. But our RV was cool enough at night to open the windows and enjoy the sea breeze. The beach was clean, and so were the comfort stations. And the horses! They walked right through our campsite.

Winship Schmitt

I am surprised of friends that have never visited. I know a common misconception is all the bugs. If you visit the state park which is straight ahead after the bridge, a walk on the beach will get you bit by the sun and no bugs. Also with the sight of ponies walking g around, that's pretty cool.

rosemary flannery

Very nice park to visit, however, we never even saw the beach due to severe storms that rolled in

Colleen Richards

Wonderful place to camp! Very well maintained! Peaceful, friendly atmosphere, close to the beach and attractions and, of course wild horses!

Tiffany S

Staff was great! Facilities were clean and neat! Lovely beaches!

Katrina Paisley

Stopped at Assateague beach for our last day at Ocean City. It's so clean and beautiful. The kids loved it.

Jacob storm

Plan your trip here and ensure you do your research. Start at the visitors center and be prepared to walk across the foot bridge to the island. Every road on the island leads to paid parking lots and camp grounds there are no helpful signs warning you before hand but if you walk in across the foot bridge you do not have to pay.

Phillip Johnson

Beautiful place for families. Lots of horses all over and the beach is perfect sandbars on the ocean allow you and the lil ones to travel far. Just remember the beach and state park have separate fees if you want to enter them.

rick wilson

We had a wonderful time tent camping here. Showers and restrooms were excellent. We enjoyed our visit. September is the time to go for a peaceful trip with less crowds and warm water.

Carole Schlenker

My favorite place for a camping vacation ! Quiet, clean, affordable and non-commercial !! They recently added electricity ( and maybe water ? ) to some of the camping loops. Clam digging near the bridge is a fun activity, and watching the wild horses meander thru the park is an experience only available here ! The beach has sugar-like sand and is just awesome in general !

Mary Vick

Lovely seashore with beautiful scenery and a variety of wildlife. A nice place to camp and enjoy with family and friends.

Kevin Q

Just like the OBX only smaller. Nature and the beach combine with family time perfectly here. Lizards, horses, crabs, surf, & sun.

John Phillips

Pretty cool place , there is a state park and national Park there so pay attention where you go cause they both have gate fees, one fee doesn't get you into both places

We went to the Maryland side of the island. Saw ponies immediately... and often! Groups of them were scattered throughout our drive and were literally everywhere. Scenery during the drive was beautiful as was the beach. Of note: Can drive on the beach for an extra fee. We did not, but the option is available. I was initially surprised at the large number of tent campers present but after experiencing the beach, not surprised at all... and would like to do that myself! It was a very pleasant experience.

Fun but so many mosquitos and fleas. Lots of crabs running around the beach at night

I've been visiting the Assateague State Park beach for more than 25 years. It has the best waves, best walking sand, and none of the hassle of OC.

Ioan Vlad

A good place to be outdoors. I wish there were more serviced camp sites. I will return

Joe

Close to Beach and camping facilities good, but limited electric sites.

Rocky Bohrer

Great place to go. Nice beach. Stunning sunsets over the bay. Love that you can take your dogs to the beach too.

Charlene Arnold

I absolutely love this we tented rate on the ocean front at night you could hear the waves very comforting call me and during the day you got to watch the wild horses that walk to the campsites but stay far away from them they are wild and will bite and kick this place is simply amazing if you can get along without electric or water hookups you are good to go even in a camper configure solar system

The first time I came here I had a great time. When I arrived they were shutting down the ranger station so they quickly got me my passes. I spent around $180 total because I knew that I wanted to return. The second time I came I arrived around noon and made my way to the off-road beach. I was able to drive the beach for 5 min before getting pulled over by a ranger. He informed me that he was looking for the pass and a equipment inspection. Since this was 4 months after my initial visit the required equipment slipped my mind. Even though I was only missing a shovel he wrote me a $130 ticket. I can understand the need to carry a shovel and I was wrong for not having one but a warning would have went a long way. I was asked to leave the beach which I did. I had high hopes for this place I’m sure the reason why I had a good time the first time was because it was off season and after hours. I will not be returning to the beach hopefully they will start handing out warnings because they do very little to educate they’re rules and regulations of the beach

My wife and I loved the beach and seeing the wild horses is one of our favorite memories..

I have been camping here with my family for over 10 years. The beaches and campsites are clean and well maintained, the staff is friendly, and there is so much to do locally. The only issue is tourists getting too close to the horses.

Dennise D

We saw horses walking on road and grazing on side of road. That was cool. The beach at state park was full of waves/swarms of dead flies. Really weird, but it helped to hear my friend describe as a nature "event." It took some getting used to! Huge beach plenty of room not overcrowded on July 3rd, we also hot there late (2:30ish). The outdoor showers were a plus!

Krissy Kallemyn

Another fun visit. The beach was beautiful and we saw some wild horses!

Monte Sanchez

We try to go here at least once a year with the boys. They love being so close to the beach and camping out. Restroom and shower facilities are well kept.

Kevin Kearns

It's like the desert, but with water and ponies! It's hot, did I mention it's hot? Ponies have a tendency to nap in your campsite. If you got a Smoky fire they will circle around it. All in all nice place to visit, p probably will not be camping there again.

Awesome place to bring the family lots of history and not to mention beautiful wild horses and camping and a beautiful beach and clean restrooms

jerzc nate

This is a beautiful park and beautiful piece of land. You can relax on the beach or drive around looking for wild horses. Speed limit is 25mph please drive it cause you never know where the horses are. They post a sign stay 40 ft away from the horses. Horses bites and kick but you know people are stupid. That is how we get great videos to laugh at also some of the best pictures and videos. On this day the horses where out on the road grazing they are some beautiful animals. We slowly drove by pictures are taken. Not only can you fish relax on the beach you can chill with horses. Now people when you are on the boardwalk step away and take in some nature it's definitely worth it.

I have come to this park every year for the last 27 years. The park is well maintained and quite beautiful.

Sara Griffin

My husband and I have camped many times at Assateague State Park. It's always beautiful. We tent camp and hope to some day have a camper. When we go, it's always an adventure as well! You won't be disappointed.

LeBronLiza

Very windy so if your camping smaller tents work better . Ours broke

Michael Schneider

The National Seashore was fantastic. The park service does a great job maintaining the facilities and land. Both days that we visited we saw some horses.

Sherry Simons

Clean fun family environment. The camp site is always clean and maintained and there are fun things to do on site on their calender.

Matt Stevenson

Awesome place to bike and walk. Or sun bathe and swim in the Atlantic. I like park at the visitor center then bike over to the beach. Even when it's crowded it seems pretty safe I've never had bike messed with or anything stolen. I've even left expensive sunglasses on my bike seat for several hours while I swam. There's abundant bird watching opportunitys places to launch kayaks into the bay. A great place to bring your family

Sally

If you like camping you will enjoy this.A good family friendly vacation. Wild horses roam freely on the campground which is a barrier island. Be sure to follow the instructions...DO NOT FEED THE HORSES or get too close!!! Also be sure to tie down your Coolers. The horses are masters at opening them and stealing your food. Think of them as oversized sea gulls... and just be smart about encountering wild animals. That aside it is a lot of fun to watch them. The beach itself is beautiful. Ghost crabs come out at night near the shoreline. We saw an American bald eagle fly by. Amazing... The campground has public showers and toilets in each loop. There is a family shower. There is also a place to wash your dishes and some of the loops have electricity. Nice walking and biking paths. A lot of people seem to come year after year here. Saw a lot of people doing tent camping in addition to RVs. If you're going to camp in a tent ,I recommend 10 or 12" stakes to pitch the tent. The bugs are relentless if the bay breeze shifts... But campers already know this. Pack bug spray , sunscreen and a hoodie... Also keep things in plastic as everything gets a salty , marshy coating on it.

I love camping here, and it is beautiful. The horses are amazing and camping here is a wonderful experience. There are a ton of mosquito's and you are sure to get a sunburn. This year the people on golf carts were extremely rude to us and others, but I really hope this is not going to be a regular thing. They have all been so nice in the past.

Chris Northrop

Amazing place to visit, there are lots of trails, bike paths and beaches to explore. Several camping sites suitable for tents up to large RVs to stay, there are restrooms and shower facilities available as well as a gift shop and food. We thought it may be difficult to spot the horses, but we were able to see 20+ in the few hours we were there! Good for short day trips or weekend long getaways. I believe there was also kayak, canoe and SUP rentals available.
