Amazing hike to Barnard Mt. and you have the place to yourself. Must see!

Ray Paradis

Never made it there. Google maps sent me down logging roads and then on to a snowmobile trail. My 4×4 was up to it but the snowmobiler's were giving me dagger stares.

The only negative reviews are from bitter locals like Justin Waceken, who didn't want this to become federally protected land. The government did not take this land over; it was purchased privately by an individual citizen and then donated to the government. That citizen had the right to do WHATEVER she wanted with it. And by the way Justin, it's spelled "sense" not "sence".

Beautiful! A great gift to the people of Millinocket and to all who love the beauty of nature.

Makes no sence... why would anyone go here when you have such a better atmosphere more mountains and more streams and a way better experience at Baxter State Park which is next door.

Michael Morin

Beautiful scenery in a peaceful setting. An out of the way spot well worth exploring.

Absolutely beautiful National Monument!! The park is still very primitive with not much around in terms of people and cars. I spent a half day hiking and didn’t run into another person the whole time I was there. It’s a really shame this National Monument is on Trump’s chopping block.

East Branch of the Penobscot River, the heart of the National Monument, is wild, remote and beautiful. For folks not up to that challenge, the loop road is wild and wonderful, with spectacular views of Katakdin, and all accessible from your car.. But go with a full tank of gas and some time to explore. Forever grateful to Roxanne Quimby and her family.

Probably the best hike of my life. Katahdin should be on every hikers/nature lovers bucket list. In fact, every person should go at some point their lives. I'm glad this a National Monument so it will be around for a long time to come. Just go, you will not be disappointed!

We drove up from Belfast Sunday Memorial Day weekend 2017 and got off at Medway, took Maine 11 up to a hard right hand corner at Swift Brook Road: there are no signs for this entrance so if you get to Sherman and the Irving company store you went too far. You will need a good map and follow it. There are no signs to direct you. (shame on the locals for that) If you head in on Swift Brook Road just keep going and you'll get to the "loop road". There are great moments of scenery but I felt blessed to be at the beginning of a long look into the future. It isn't all tricked out like many parks, it's just getting going. Roads are rough, services are next to nil, and fellow travelers... maybe we saw 20 cars in 7 hours. What we did see was a ferocious army of black flies. I cannot imagine hiking in that and we did not. What we did not see, other than a few cars of kind of giddy visitors, was any sign of civilization. Thank you for the great gift and we'll be back.

I hiked Mount Katahdin when I was in 8th grade it was my first time being in that area of Maine I am from the Coast of Maine and I saw a slew of wildlife on that trip. Although I did not complete the hike the experience itself made an impact it allowed me test my self and to see another part of Maine I had not.

Great gift to the people. Best use of area resources. Land that will never be destroyed by greedy commercial interests from away. Finally, a real economic boost for this struggling area. Governor Paul Lepage has called attention to it and now you should visit this monument. Private property placed into the public domain for all to enjoy just as the land owner wanted. Thanks to the Qumby Family for making this wonderful gift to the American people.

The secret Little gem.

Charlene Cummings

Only drove the loop road wrong way it turned out but was well worth it need to go back when I have more time to explore

Carolyn Hardin Engelhardt

Was there last September and the views are spectacular!

Tremendous gift to the American people from a generous patriot. Beautiful woods, breathtaking scenery, rivers galore. Come see for self. Saw a black bear on the trail, very cool.

Do not follow Google's directions they will not get you there.

On my bucket list, but from all reviews and friends been there, it's everything but "mosquito" factory LePage tried to make it. I was in Maine Woods most of summer, AT & miles of trails, mosquitos were least of wildlife. That said, anyone who expects no blackflies in ME spring is not paying attention.

Absolutely beautiful! What a wonderful gift to give to this country
