William Daigle

Nice historical site. Very friendly staff.

Dee Deigh

Did the driving tour and it was Ok.

Robin Schallot

Really great place. Worth a visit if you have some time to spare. I would recommend going in Fall so you can look around outside without melting, but if Summer is all you have that's ok. For sure, there is not a ton to see; museum (which is small, but great), the field itself, and the house. However, still worth a look. Read the plaques and try to envision history!

Jason Kirby

Great experience, tour guides very knowledgeable, and enjoyable.

Mike Allgaier

Reality is better than books.

Dan Martin

A vast amount of interesting information shared in an enjoyable way! One star for forbidding food or drink on the boat, other than that sold for a high price( plus fairly high ticket price).

Mark Javers

Very informative on the history of the battlefield and well maintained.

William B

Amazing place. Small but State of the Art museum and gift shop. Bathrooms are in a separate area. Great staff. Nice driving trail.

Bob Wolf

Incredible to know what Andrew Jackson did to pull together militias, freed slaves, indians, pirates and anyone else who could fire a rifle to defeat the most powerful military of it's time. If Jackson failed, we'd be speaking the Queen's English today.

Vickie Cuevas

Employees were so helpful and offered lots of interesting facts. Driving through cemetary is an amazing experience and loved being able to listen to the stories for some of the war heros by dialing into the number listed at entrance. It was hard to find the sections for each story and where they were located in the cemetary but if you go to visitor center they have a map that is useful too. I highly recommend everyone should visit this well kept piece of history!

Lee DeWoskin

The park ranger was very knowledgeable. The museum is small but worth a visit.

anna raffaele

Stopped there during the Historic cruise tour with Creole queen, small history kinda not so organized! Nothing much to see!

Traci C

Beautiful place and a nice walk

James Taylor

This is an awesome place to visit. You can really feel the history. I do have some important advice for anyone who might think it is a great idea to cut through the field; don't. There are alligators in those stagnant pools. Found that out the hard way! Beautiful place.

Terry Imar

Interesting - the site of the battle of New Orleans. Nice, small visitors center with good videos.

Louisiana Boy

You can learn a lot of history from the story’s they tell and the museum and gift shop was very nice

Adam Dequeant

Great place has alot of information and it has a small museum. But a fantastic little get away and to go back in time.

Randall Archer

Interesting somber lesson In history.

Paul Rose

A very comprehensive visitor center is a must. The battlefield itself is just that: a field with a barrier berm, an overgrown canal remnant, a few cannons, and a self drive one-way tour road with some interpretation signs. There is pedestrian access to the military cemetery, but it is mostly Civil War with only 4 graves of War of 1812 veterans. There is also an observation white stone memorial tower. If you decide to walk on other than the paved walks and roads, beware of the fire ants.

Abner Shoemaker

To really get the feel of the park you need to at least drive through both the Chalmette National Cemetery and Historical Park. The cemetery is a beautiful and honorable place to visit from the time you pass through the wrought iron, painted gates. The park has a nice little visitor center and museum. It does a very nice job of explaining the battlefield. I did select the park on Google Maps and wound up in the cemetery, so don’t be surprised. But on the other hand, you will not be disappointed. Oh yes.. To get to the park from the cemetery, it does try to have you follow a service road.

D M

I liked that this tour had the option to have a guide or self-paced.

John H Ratliff

Given the significance of this battle in American history you'd expect to see much more at the site. There's not much interpretation of the battle on the battlefield itself. The visitor's center is small but nicely done. The rangers were very personable and professional.

Maximilian Upp

Very impressive. Very well done.

Matthew Allen

Very informative visitor center. Free to enter.

Vincent Tyler

A great place to learn some lesser-known history.

Allie Wadsworth

Beautiful, quiet, full of history.

Yughonda Dotson

Great experience, tour guides very knowledgeable, and enjoyable.

Craig Smith

I'm a history buff, so this site of the battle of New Orleans is a gem. Guide was informative and personable.

Keith Roussel

Having lived near this monument for years I can appreciate its beauty in a place surrounded by, well, not so much beauty. The large, old oak trees are majestic, and the old plantation house is something to see and appreciate. The place has history and it is interesting to learn of the difference in casualties between the British and Americans during the battle fought here. If you visit, don't forget the cemetery off to the side, and if you walk over the levee to the Mississippi there is a concrete wall you can walk on. My rating is with respect to other national parks that I have visited.

HeavyEvy Bycr

Interesting and awesome living the feel of that time. We hear of these historical sites, but you get a real perspective by visiting them Thanks

Greg Hephner

Nice, concise overview of the battle of New Orleans. Easy to picture the battle with the displays, films, walking & driving tours. Easy stop to make.

Silja Tanner

This place is full of such important history and it's well-told and preserved here. My whole family loves to watch the yearly reenactment, climb the monument, visit the plantation home, and walk along the Mississippi river levee. There is a gorgeous picnic area sheltered by several sprawling hundred-year-old live oaks. The cannons still work!

debbie nuncio

This is an interesting landmark. The museum is interesting and free with many interactive displays. If you want to learn more about the history here, the cemetery is worth stopping at.

janeal kitchens

Awesome battlefield.

Liz Sheffield

The walking trail was well maintained

David Boquet

Very good trip. The story of this battle's place in American History cannot be overstated. Enjoyed the visitor's center very much. The National Cemetery adjacent to the battlefield is interesting as well. Never forget the sacrifice that made this country what it is today.

Dundi Thompson

Easy, self paced tour.

Alan Cripps

Great history. Great experience. I learned a lot about the battle of new Orleans.

samer jaber

The pirate and his soldiers fought in the battle of 1812 until they triumphed and buried their dead in this camp, Jean Lafitte (c. 1780 – c. 1823) was a French pirate and privateer in the Gulf of Mexico in the early 19th century. He and his elder brother, Pierre, spelled their last name Laffite, but English-language documents of the time used "Lafitte". The latter has become the common spelling in the United States, including for places named after him.[1] Lafitte is believed to have been born either in Basque-France or the French colony of Saint-Domingue. By 1805, he operated a warehouse in New Orleans to help disperse the goods smuggled by his brother Pierre Lafitte. After the United States government passed the Embargo Act of 1807, the Lafittes moved their operations to an island in Barataria Bay, Louisiana. By 1810, their new port was very successful; the Lafittes had a profitable smuggling operation and also started to engage in piracy. Though Lafitte warned the other Baratarians of a possible military attack on their base of operations, a United States naval force successfully invaded in September 1814 and captured most of Lafitte's fleet. Later, in return for a legal pardon for the smugglers, Lafitte and his comrades helped General Andrew Jackson defend New Orleans from the British in the final battle of the War of 1812. The Lafittes became spies for the Spanish during the Mexican War of Independence and moved to Galveston Island, Texas, where they developed a pirate colony they called Campeche. Lafitte continued attacking merchant ships as a pirate around Central American ports until he died circa 1823, trying to capture Spanish vessels. Speculation about his life and death continues among historians.

Vicki Frederick

Awesome place

Rachelle Hermanson

Neat place. FYI-I was upset that the ranger talked the entire time we visited though. We did the steamboat cruise and I did not want to be rude and wander away, but I wish I had! We only had 50 minutes there. So, I say if you go, walk around and enjoy your own tour, as we could not even hear her narrative-she talks softly and there was a large crowd. You cannot go inside the old plantation, but it is still a cool site. The battlefield is mostly a large grassy field, which is only mowed around the old plantation.

robert r

Great place to learn some history of the Louisiana Purchase and the history of new Orleans

Sean Griffin

Randy McDaniel

Unfortunately, there was the threat of a storm just before we came, so the park services decided to shut down for 3 days and nothing was open. It turned out to be a nice, though humid, day! We were still able to walk around and read the plaques and learn about the grounds.

sarah jones

Interesting bit of history. Not much to do there besides the national Park monument and visitor center. I'm good we got to experience it from the Creole Queen.

Jodi Mazola

Great place to visit if you love history

Brandon Skalican

Neat piece of history. Clean and well cared for.

Brad FA

Very interesting tour

stephen vantre

Nice historical place. Worth the visit

65Larry Polizzi

Cool for veterans

Doreen Nalyazi

It's a small spot but informative and free. You can also do a seld guided drive through the battlefield. Make sure to stop at the visitors center for a mini history museum!

Juan Lima

Peaceful and serene. The monument reminds me of a shorter version of the Washington Monument. I went to the top and took some incredible photos. It was relatively cool with the thick concrete wall the monument is made out of.

Barbara Dixon

Beautiful place to visit. Very friendly and helpful staff!

John Brately

I was disappointed I couldn't hear what the park ranger was saying finally was informed that there was a video in the building by the time I went in to watch the video watched for a minute-and-a-half they told us our boat was getting ready to leave wasted 3 hours tour guide on paddle boat was informative

Debbie Gros

We had a wonderfully educational time here. We will definitely be back when we can get there early enough to visit all the things to see.

Andrea F

Great historical site of the first major win of the Revolutionary war. Cemetery and battle accessories are still here.

Kelli Romero

I learn a lot of very interesting information on the war. Very nice place to visit.

Deidre Smotherman

Very beautiful and educational if you stop and really appreciate...

Niki Perkins

Visited the park as part of the Creole Queen historic cruise, neat way to arrive at the site. Several areas to check out including a rampart, monument, home (if it is open), national cemetery and small museum.

Ryan Brandenburg

The public buildings, including bathrooms, were closed for some reason so only the outdoor things could be explored. Thst said it is a beautiful area certainly worth visiting if you're close enough to do so.

Art Magana

A great historical visit, site of a turning point battle in American history

Charles Wade

Great visitor center that has two short movies that explain the battle. The site is easy to navigate. Only climb the monument if you want the exercise. The view is not that great. It takes less than two hours and if you are a military history buff, it's well worth it!

Gopi Sankar

Amazing and must visit for all who comes to new Orleans

Q Bienemy

Lost almost 80lbs walking here!

Rodney Miiller

We took a paddle boat to get there. Wendel was a tour guide on the boat and he did a great job. He was very knowledgeable. The National Park tour guide was dressed in period appropriate garb. Nice place, check it out.?

The tour from the lunch cruise was entertaining! Nice museum and place to relax and take in the nature... Especially after walking around the filthy city for a few days. Nola is great but it is dirty!! This your is one i always like to take when I bring new people to the city.

Historic and an essential stop if you visit Louisiana. A great history lesson and something that will make you reflect on our history, the challenges and ultimately the success of the war.

Arunkumar Gurusamy

This place is huge and requires at least 2 hours to cover fully. Was on a river cruise and did not have time to look around the entire place. But its worth the time

Lou Griffith

Very informative. We really enjoyed the interactive pieces.

Kandis Rodgers

Nice historical tour

Donna Smith

Nice little stop about history from the paddle boat tour.

It was very nice to visit this site where the famous battle occurred to relive this country's history. It's grounds were very beautifully maintained and preserved with a friendly and helpful tour guide to narrate the story of the battle. Highly recommended for anyone interested in history.

If you are a history nut, you will enjoy this well preserved site. Chalmette Battlefield is part of the Jean Lafitte Natural Historical Park and Preserve. This is the site of the January 8, 1815, Battle of New Orleans. The last fight of the War of 1812. It was here that General Andrew Jackson's little army won against a stronger British force. Admission is free, and the visitor center has a great exhibit providing history about the site and importance of the war in creating the America we know today. I loved the lighted map and video that outlined the movements of the war. If you only have time for one thing in the visitor center, watch that video with the lighted display. When you pass through the gates to the Battlefield the first thing you will see is the Chalmette Monument, the battlefield's 100-foot-high obelisk. It is only open on Friday and Saturday (9:00 -3:30 pm). You can climb the stairs to the top viewing platform. You can take a self guided walking or driving tour (with convenient pull offs) of the grounds. There are signs with historic information that will guide you along your way. At the back of the site is the Malus-Beauregard House, an antebellum plantation. And you can walk on the other side of the levy to see the boat dock and Mississippi river. To access the park you can take the paddle wheeler Creole Queen from New Orleans' French Quarter to the battlefield. Next to the battlefield is the Chalmette National Cemetery which was established in May 1864. Here lay Union soldiers who died in Louisiana during the Civil War, veterans of the Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, and the Vietnam War. Four Americans who fought in the War of 1812 are buried here, though only one of them took part in the Battle of New Orleans.

Chris Stathis

Very cool place.

Catherine Griffin

Very well kept up. Quite a neat detour if you have the time!

Kurtis Kozel

In terms of national parks this one leaves much to be desired. Very few landmarks and comfortable footpaths. The main one doubles as a road and is probably only around 1 mile long with few signs for history and little nature to view. To compare this with other national parks, especially other battlefields such as Moores Creek Bridge, leaves it wanting. The visitor's center was exceptionally small and much of the park seemed as if it needed some upkeep. A key part of great parks are a well kept and interesting visitor centers/museums, good trails, and key landmarks and natural beauty. This park seemed merely there to preserve land, as opposed to a vital and essential part of the area serving tourists and others who might want to bask in the history, as it were. For a park marking the location of such a battle with such interesting and influential people (Andrew Jackson fighting alongside pirates, for a start) and such cultural relevance (the famously popular Battle of New Orleans by Jimmy Driftwood and covered by many artists for example) one might anticipate more funding, but sadly this park is left far behind most others I've attended.

mike saunders

Family really enjoyed our visit!

Thomas Werts

Great spot for a photo shoot

dan erickson

Another must see when you visit New Orleans. There is so much history in this area. My father-in-law loves history, so we surprised him and stopped here. It was amazing. Unfortunately, it was during the shutdown, so we couldn't do the driving tour or go in the museum.

Paul Chang

Site of the Battle of New Orleans where Andrew Jackson and his French speaking allies defeated British allies during the War of 1812. According to our guides, this victory cemented the ties between New Orleans and the United States.

Kimberlee Shipley

We stopped here on a historical tour and I loved all the info! The guide on the boat and at the site were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, that made it fun for me to watch my kids take it all in.

Jeetendra Pujari

Excellent walking tour of the battlefield. It was part of our historical cruise tour

Allen Todd

In 1814 Andrew Jackson led a group of farmers, frontiersman, backwoods men, free and enslaved Americans down to New Orleans to protect this newly acquired port. New Orleans sits at the mouth of the Mississippi River. The Mississippi rivers being a vast intercontinental waterway which intersects with some of the world's most productive farm lands makes the port one of the most valuable ports in the world. Britain in 1814 recognized this and sent 8000 British Regulars to capture this strategic port, on the mighty Mississippi. January 8, 1815 Jackson with 5700 miltia met on this field. When the dust cleared almost 2000 British including their commander was killed, wounded or missing. Jackson lost less than a hundred men. Even though this battle was fought after the signing of the Treaty of Ghent it still was important because it gave the young nation pride. And generated a new national hero. If you are in the area, stop in to this little gem of a historical park. There is s small visitor center that is worth a look, but the greatest part is to walk where heroes sacrifice for a young nation.

Tina Marxmiller

Restrictions and no restrooms. But not bad, monument, house, trees. Short trip off of creole queen.

Cynthia Noel

Great piece of U.S. history.

P Walker

Have a clue. The cheap tourist company/Diamond Tours prepare a buffet style dinner four our tour group there. The whites sat on one side of the room and the blacks on the other side instead of taking us to a local restaurant as they promised.

Latrice Edwards

Nice and informative presentation. We didn’t have time to spend inside the visitors center.

Noelle Pike

So much to learn here. We took the paddleboat down. Most enjoyable. If you're a history buff...you gotta check this out

Wendy Rawlings

Rangers were super helpful, knowledgeable and personable. The grounds were lovely and the displays and walks were educational.

Billy Tharp

Such a learning experience. Everything presented in an easily understandable manner. Great for a long walk or an easy drive around the battlefield if walking is a problem. One warning. Watch out for the wind. It took my hat off my head and dropped it in the Mississippi River.

luis bello

Nice place very historical

Stacie Leech

Great little hike to learn about a size of New Orleans history few know about. Not just the battle of New Orleans but the relocation of the community that became the 9th ward. The visitors center is clean and informative. A pleasant little gift shop offers candy and momentos.

charmedsingingangel

Wonderful!

Katrina Kelly

Jacob Camp

Little museum, and monument; pretty cool

Greg Chopek

Interesting battle of 1812 how the Americans saved New Orleans's

Ms Schonheit

I definitely learned a lot on this tour! The information was presented in an entertaining yet informative style. My teenager enjoyed this one because she said, 'it didnt feel like a long boring lecture or a school field trip' . . . . great job Wendell!!!

Beth Quinn

Took the Creole queen Cruise to the battlefield. Good combo.

Dennis Pohle

Very historic location. The visitor center gives provides a multi-media presentation with short movies, displays and artifacts. We spent about 2 hours here between the museum and walking the grounds. Placards on the grounds help tell the story of the battle.

Carolyn Thompkins

The battleground yesterday was beautiful and green. The visitor center was very neat, attractive and informative. Park personnel were friendly and helpful. Tour guide from paddlewheel boat was a wealth of information and well spoken. Terrific even in a downpour of rain

Jackie Wade

The guides are the funniest and friendliest I have ever met. The information from the exhibit and videos are very well done, and the grounds are really beautiful. Unfortunately when we visited, the house on the grounds was closed, but it was still nice to see. I do recommend walking the tower and counting the steps. It's a hike, but the view from the top is great.

Stephani Todd

Rangers were very informative and made the history come alive!

robert odom

Good American history to see

sabine 66

Great place especially if you're a history buff. The actual cannons were still there. The grounds were limited to where you could walk and visit. We went there as part of a Creole history cruise.

Alexa Sandford

This place had a lot of history about War of 1812. It was a very interesting place.

Brenda Tucker

Great talk by the Park Ranger but standing outside on a concrete slab was tiresome. Go inside for interesting exhibits.

Ladayna Penrose

Visited on a rainy day. Tower is fun.

a.j. sisco

Quiet peaceful historical setting. Nice place for a walk, jog are just take in the Majestic Oaks. Right next door is Chalmette Battlefield, where the battle of New Orleans took place in 1815. There is an old Antebellum home there and also a visitor's center. If you feel up to it you can walk up to the top of the monument and take in spectacular views of the surrounding area.

Barbara Schuellein

We really enjoyed learning about the Battle of New Orleans. The Visitor Center is excellent, with a few videos to help put things into perspective for kids and adults alike. We attended the ranger talk at 10:45 and it was quite good. According to my son, this was a very cool place!

Edwin Stark

I had a very pleasant time visiting this historical location, although it rained the day before, making the ground a bit soggy and hard to walk around.

Sylvannia Young

Enjoyed it a lot. Learned a lot

Darlene Mulligan

Very interesting historical location... travelled there by way of Natchez paddle wheeler boat on the Mississippi!

james caulfield

Very well preserved and informative. Great staff
