REVIEWS OF Kalaupapa National Historical Park IN Hawaii

Interesting how ignorance of disease ruined life for so many. Beautiful place, tho isolated.

Oliver Baitz

Amazing views!

Best scenery of Hawaii. Do the hike down, don't take the mule. It's more dangerous trying to balance yourself on the mule especially if someone is overweight. Walking down is more special. My 70yr old mother did it in 2 hours. Then she took the flight out for $60.

Andy Schwarz

Somber and interesting place of great historical significance... So many sad stories and yet beautiful

Flying in and out was right for us. The tour was spectacular. Guides Liane and Rick were outstanding and passionate guides who knew everything and treated us to musical performances of Hawaiian songs and ukulele and flute. Some people who had walked down joined us, but the mule riders had their tour cancelled because of heavy rain the night before.

Super fun hike, regardless if you enjoy the history of Father Damien, which you will. Setting-up entry into the park is difficult and some hikers were turned around because they did not get a sponsor to enter Kalaupapa.

Matthew Lieblong

Absolutely breathtaking.

We walked the trail down which is very arduous. It is WORTH IT! This is an awesome tour and well worth your time. You can fly out ONE way and if you add up the cost it is CHEAPER to walk down and fly out rather than ride the MULES. DO NOT go to Molokai and miss this.

What an educational hike and historical tour! Fr Damien truly cared for the shunned in Hawaii's past, and we were able to shake hands with empathy toward one of the only remaining original residents.

For anyone who is visiting Hawaii or from Hawaii it's a must-see. Take the tour if you're not able to hike fly-in. It is worth it. Unbelievable views, humbling history, a place with a lot of power or as we say in Hawaii "Mana

This place is truly a life changing experience. We walked down because there's story of the mules crashing into each other and one was dead 2 passengers in life support. We don't want to place our lives in danger and cause cruel and unusual punishment to the mules. Walking down is safer and you can test your strength and stamina. Some young guys ran down in 30 minutes. We took 1 hour to walk down and 1 back up. Others took 2 hours but in the end it's the journey you took with your feet that counts. If you are mobidly obese take the flight in and out.

Such an amazing place with life changing information. Mahalo Uncle Rick for your time and your love for this very special place!

Kalaupapa National Historical Park - Michelin's recommendations 2 * "This unique site encompasses a 13.6sqmi peninsula separated from the rest of Moloka'i by a 1,600ft cliff, to create an isolation colony for victims of Hansen's disease (leprosy), Molokaians were relocated from the beautiful windswept promontory in 1865, to be replaced the following year by banished lepers. Beautiful and peaceful place on earth

Jesus De La Pena

Beautiful place, not the norm for sure. It's very isolated, so plan on hiking your needs (food, toiletries) in and out.

My first time their, given a private tour by Ka Ohana O Kalaupapa...made it the most awesomest experience. Plan to take more trips in the near future

The hike is longer coming up than going down. Especially with all the rain that was falling.

Been here 4 times and this is the only place where all you here is the sounds of the ocean, the calming winds, the sounds the birds, and the peaceful tranquility of mother nature. This is #oldhawaii

A stunning view of an important site of great historical import. It’s a must stop just to look out and understand what happened down there.

Ryan Hyypio

It's a very difficult round trip hike. When you come to the bottom you MUST have an individual resident sponsor you as a guest, or you can purchase a sponsor through the mule company. Riding the mule down and back costs extra.

Carlina Larson

Awesome very educational with lot of historical histories.

Wow. You've gotta go here if you get the chance. I went via a flight and tour package deal. I took an 8 seat Cessna plane from Oahu and then took the tour once I landed. Others on the tour had hiked or taken a mule from the cliff-top down to the settlement. Either way, everyone found the experience informational and enjoyable.

Serene, peaceful, and beautiful. If you ever get the opportunity to go here, go at least once. The history of all who lived here as their residence and those who came selflessly to serve them is incredible. Pray for the handful of patients remaining and for all those who keep this place Kalaupapa.

Jian Sato

Really nice park, with some cool sculptures. Lepers used to be put away here in ancient times. There are special tours, and you can ask for a ride on a mule throughout the tour. It is a group thing, and works very well if you are traveling alone or with someone.

Expensive hike with a very poor guide signs up for Damien tours LLC. Not father Damien tours. We chose the later and had a 90 year old man talk about 3 houses and then drive us to the "highlight of the tour"(his words)... lunch. However due to some glitch in their system we were not included in the lunch. If this were not a gorgeous hike and beautiful area this would get a 1 star. However the Damien tours looked like they were having fun and they actually learned about the site.

Blanca Diaz Houle

Quite an interesting tour. Amazing history.
