Great park to explore.

Didn't see any volcanoes. I don't think we were anywhere close to volcanoes. It was I think a fissure area. Walked on lava flow from 1868. Saw small lava tubes. Saw old lava flow around a tree. Climbed up a large cinder cone. Not what I wanted to see. I wanted to see lava tubes I could walk in. I wanted to see steam from cracks and warm ground. I wanted to see lava flow from last year. I was told Hawaii Volcanoes park has been closed since April last year. We were in the part of the park referred to as an annex of the park since the sixties. So we did technically go in to Volcanoes park. One needs to read the description of the tours carefully to see what one wants to see of volcano sight seeing. It is a little tricky. I heard that perhaps there was more to see outside of the park. Also I was told that after 35 years of lava flow it has now stopped.

This place is beautiful! Wish I planned for more time to hike. The trail map looked like it would have been fun. Not too difficult.

If you want to get up close to older lava flows this place is for you. There are several hikes that take you right through old lava fields and through green pastures, a fascinating contrast. The staff here are friendly and enthusiastic about the park. The park is open a couple days a week, call first before visiting. We stopped there on a whim and are happy we did. Bonus: the particles that make up the green sand beach line many of the trails.
