REVIEWS OF Cumberland Island National Seashore IN Georgia

Camping at the beach! Not on the beach, but less than 5 minutes after waking up I was watching the sunrise over the Atlantic. Not to mention it's a national park / Private island with limited access via 45 min ferry ride. So almost private beach!

Carrie Young

Hot and Sandy! Gorgeous island for sure. Not alot of amenities so bring your water and food. I'd suggest being as fit as possible to get the full enjoyment of the island. Lots and lots of walking. Go in the cooler months . Not in the summer as we did. Wild horses , TICKS, snakes, bugs. We didn't find hardly any shells. Beautiful sand dunes and canopy trees.

Bryant Welch

Beautiful, stunning, serene. Just a few ways to describe this place.

Wonderful boat tour around Cumberland Island. Wildlife galore. First rate narrator

Sue Reese

Just did the van tour. Our guide Mike was wonderful and entertaining. Would recommend this to anyone who wants to know more history of this wonderful place.

Bruce Davis

Awesome place. Will go back to take the tour. We road our bikes this time from the south end to the north end and back. Need to keep it protected from any building expansion.

Nadine Tureman

Absolutely beautiful a must to see

We had an amazing time! We packed a picnic lunch since there is no place to purchase food on the Island. There are several spots with picnic tables to stop at. The horse's were out on the beach when we got down there. We were so excited to see them! I would recommend making a reservation for the ferry ahead of time.

Tim Lehman

Great island for a day hike! Take a ferry from Saint Mary's to the island and you can hike and explore this beautiful island that has Rich history dating back to the 1780s. See Robert Staffords plantation and ruins from the Carnegie's estate. Wild horses still roam the island that were once owned by the Carnegie's. Hike through the island to the Eastern seacoast to spend the day on the beach. I have never camped on the island yet however I have walked through the camp sites and each site is surrounded by walls of palmetto bushes. Very private. The reason for 4 stars is for the lack of drinking water on the island. If you plan on hiking all day, make sure you bring extra bottles to refill and carry.

Jaimee Howard

I went on Tuesday, November 20th with my boyfriend. The weather was great for the ferry ride to the island, but we were both glad we brought a jacket. We did not need bug spray, but wore sleeves and pants just in case. There are some burs on the island, so we recommend sticking to the trails or roads when possible. There were a lot of wild horses out when we came. The horses and the ruins were my favorite things to see, but we also saw the museum and the beach. Bicycles are available for rent if you would like. Overall, it was a great experience.

Tony Guo

A secluded island with feral horses just off the coast of Georgia! One of our favorite spots when were on the east coast. Explore miles and miles of the island including beaches, marshes, bushes, and forests with hardly a person in sight.

Mary Tobler

I camped there about 10 years ago and want to do it again. When I went the last timed, we camped in the dunes just above the beaches, it was so incredible and relaxing. We cooked our food, froze them and took a cooler full of simple warm up foods, so it was fun taking little time. This time I will be bringing in 3 older teenage boys for camping, fishing and plaing kick ball, hiking and swimming. We like to come the full week, the week of July.

Karen McLean

Beautiful nearly uninhabitabed island, with lots of great camping and different historical landmarks. Wild horses and armadillos everywhere. For day trips, bring water bottles to fill and remember there is not trash on the island.

Elena Iogha

Absolutely fantastic! Well-maintained facilities and trails, great staff, and, of course, a gorgeous place to visit.

Samantha Garza

Cumberland island is beautiful! It is perfect for a secluded outdoor adventure with nature. There is plenty of wildlife and history in each path. We did not get to cover much ground on foot so next time we will rent a bike!

Lori Grinter

Excellent tour on Amelia River cruises

James Eusey

Hade fun with the kids

Kyle Thomas

We actually saw this park from the water while on a jet ski tour, but I will say that it is gorgeous and very cool that the wild horses are just kind of hanging out all over the place. We plan on going next year and spending more time at the actual park.

Melissa Landrum

Very nice waterside park with a view of Cumberland Island and Fernandina Beach. Located right in the historic district of St. Mary's. Within walking distance to many places to eat. St. Mary's is a sleepy little town. Great for a laid back getaway day. They have a traditional park for the kids and porch swings for the grown ups.

Donna Kay Cothron

A piece of Heaven on Earth

Nyle Vincent

Love this place a unique place on the Georgia coast. The island is breathtaking and a wonderful place to visit.

Earl Medlock

Looking out over the waters wondering what adventure is awaiting out there!

Thomas Warren

Adventure and beauty is what I found. Love it.

BandBHerrmann 1213

Yes a couple fees to get there and get in but worth the money to see this nature. We saw wild horses, deer, and dolphins on the way over and back. Lots of walkibg so take the guided tour or rent/bring bikes.

Jen Canfield

Great day trip to the Island. Peaceful. The horses are fantastic. Taking the tour is highly recommended.

Nicole Davis

Love this island

Chad Hembree

Loads of history and nature to explore.

Lou Ann Parker

Can't wait to spend the day on the island

CAB Farms

For avid hikers, wildlife, island flora, history buffs and crazy horse peop...uhhh equestrian, fans! We did a short hike to the beach and and back around to several of the islands historic sites and saw 4 feral horses; one of which was on the beach. That was a very Gilligan 3 hour tour. I could camp a solid month on the island and still feel wanting. Wonderful trip.

Ad p

First timer but will definitely be back!!

Jeremy P

Beautiful scenery, was able to see the horses, an alligator and dolphins, a good day!

Wade Randle

Great place for a long walk on the beach

April Harris

Beautiful serene and perfect time with only a few people.

David Heery

Didn't actually visit, I was traveling down the Intracoastal Waterway on a private yacht on the way to the Bahamas and anchored off the island, beautiful place, beautiful sunsets

Denise Cornella

A fantastic day trip or primative camping trip. As a National Park the island is nearly pristine with a facinating history ranging from the Indians, French Huguenots, the Spanish and the British up to and including the wealthy Carnegie family. Ferry reservations are required so plan ahead to have a marvelous adventure.

Edward Lee

Full of wildlife. Lots of things to see. They offer tours. Came here for a backpack camping trip. The beach is very nice and empty. My group hiked the beach for 3-4 miles to get back to the ferry dock from Stafford Beach and came across less than 10 people. The beach is always breezy. The amount of bugs depends on season. Stay hydrated.

Lacey Dunn

Absolutely spectacular! Like nothing you will see anywhere else.

A Sr

Go back in time 100 years. Travel light as possible. Wear good shoes. Thanks to the Carnegies for preserving it for all of us!

Joe Arnold

Beautiful scene of the St. Mary's River from the marina. Have always enjoyed walking the docks and walkways. Great park nearby

Himey Baker

Had a great time.

james carter

There is great scenery and a lot of trails. Be sure to pack snacks and drinks for the journey. Excellent workout!

Tanja Mletzko

Cumberland Island is simply amazing...I've been there now 6 times. You won't regret spending a day trip there or a camping-weekend.... Stunning all around

Skylar Reynolds

Absolutely gorgeous island that is mainly secluded from man's touch. Tour guide said only 300 were allowed on the island each day and it definitely seems to be true. Wild horses roam the island and are a sight to see!

Vicki Cooper

Enjoyed the scenery and the education. The Captain and pilot were knowledgeable and kept it fun and interesting. This tour was also reasonably-priced. Would definitely do it again.

Tonia Britain

A favorite of mine for 50yrs.. Loved camping there until National Graphic ran documentary some 35yrs ago. Then difficult to get reservations. Greyfield Inn is small, serene & expensive. Charged for everything-felt gouged. Hate to sound negative of this beautiful & historic island but the demand has spoiled it for us.

Kyran Day

Nice scenery, great parks and hikes.

Float Gmail

It's like going back in time, the island and seashore is rustic and pristine.

poka lock

If you have a boat within the area to reach this National Park, do your research on the restrictions and visit immediately. It is magical! I don't have a boat in the area so we had to take the ferry. A little spendy but worth every penny! It is a true affirmation of God's Love and the Park System to boot. My wife, my ten year old and I brought our own bikes and covered maybe a third of the Island in 5 hours in Low 60's weather. I wouldn't go near that place in the middle of a GA summer. But we had a blast! Absolutely beautiful! Awe Inspiring beauty!

Jessica Goode

Loved the Horses !

Will Wright

Hourses, beaches and history!

Daisy

This is my favorite place!

Rob Morrell

One item off the bucket list!

A D e

Great!

Wes Meaders

Such a beautiful place! Full of history and wonder! The wild horses are amazing to see. No other place like this! Camping is available. Both and a managed camp ground and back-country camping. You can canoe in and back-country camp (recommend leaving form Crooked River and watch the tides) but you'll have to pick up you permit ahead of time in St Marys.

Nate Mansfield

Beautiful. Can't wait to actually go on the island.

Ananda Chhetri

Best place ever! It was humid when we went there but those park people were very nice. They gave us cooler to use for the night! Specially when they found out it was our first time camping, they were super nice. And one guy even came and checked on us next morning making sure we were alright!

Camille Templeton Staley

My favorite place to camp!

Johnny Ingram

Great place

Going Digital

Great place to visit if you are sailing the east coast. I mean come on, wild horses.

Thomas Ring

Overrated. Tour was painful due to roads. Malnourished horses b/c rich folks just left them behind, not Spaniards. Do NOT go in August. Miserable heat.

Phyllis Chowaniok

White Sandy Beach, wild horses, and miles and miles trails to walk. You can only get there by ferry or private boat. It's worth a visit though.

Gene Monnier

Wild horses, unspoiled beautiful beaches. Best way to see Cumberland Island is by air! Call Florida adventure sports

Richard Malerba

One of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches and maritime forest in the united states. Only 60 people per night are allowed to overnight on this 17 mile island. Talk about having a place to yourself. The campground is great. Tucked under the tread and a short walk over the dune to a huge beach. Wild horses, ruins and the old mansions from the builder age. To see it is to believe it.

Tara B. Lyons

I can't rave enough about how amazing of an experience this was. We did the Land & Legacy tour and our guide Mike was just phenomenal! What an incredible day- one I won't soon forget & a memory I'll always cherish. I look forward to the chance to go back someday.

Nathanael Sperger

Take a ferry onto the island. No cars around, except for park rangers. Beautiful trails, camp grounds, beach, and even some old ruins to take fun pictures with. This is the place to go and spend some good beach camping time with kids, the special someone or a group adventure. There are carts to haul your piles of necessities to the Sea Camp campground, which is very convenient. Bathrooms and fresh water to wash up with. The campsites are large enough for a big tent and whatever else you might want to bring. We loved our time here and will go back without a doubt.

Jodi Szalapski

Such at beautiful island! There were mossy oaks, wild horses and huge butterflies everywhere! It was breathtaking! Wish we would have made the trip during a cooler month, because August was very hot. Bring lots of water(there are filling stations around the island, but at least 2 bottles per person to start), pack lunches witj salty snacks and wear tennis shoes! Tennis shoes are necessary, trust me- your feet will thank you!

Allison Xanthopoulos

Such an amazing experience but boy is it hot in the summer. The dense flora and low canopy create a very humid almost jungle like atmosphere. Being plenty of water and food. We have camped here as well, also not recommended in summer but that is when you can swim! The beach is pristine and nearly empty. Even on our day trip here, we had ample space from the next family. Lots of cool wildlife to see. Pack in pack out your trash. Bathroom facilities do have running water but only cold showers.

Peter Brezny

Great national park for a day trip or overnight camping. Be sure to reserve a spot on the passenger ferry. No cars on island. It's neat, crawling with wildlife, and the ruins of the Carnegie mansion a poignant reminder of the ultimate downfall of all excess and greed.

Becka

This is one of my most favorite places

Tami Eason

The beauty is breathtaking

Ashley Becton

Nice campground. Clean facilities. Beautiful island. Loved the ruins and the home tour.

Josh Hall

Beautiful Stunning amazing. This place is untouched by our modern world. Breath taking Sandy beaches on one side and untouched wildlife abounds everywhere.. bikes are available a small fee. (sometimes free) overnight camping is also available for a small 4-5$ fee per night.. tours are given on the hour at the standing Manor house@ 'plum orchard' a quite bike ride down the island.. or walking is always a nature lovers option.. never many people on it's beach.. get in touch with your inner self on Georgia's largest barrier island located in St. Mary, GA

Karen Bonin

This is a really fun place to go. Good swimming on the Atlantic side of the island. There is a fair amount of walking to do that, however. The trail on the way to swimming is shaded and an easy pathway. Bring supplies, food, water. The ferry is a lot of fun also.

Priscilla Engler

Booking online was easy. Read the directions for what to expect. Checking in at the visitor center was quick and easy. Bought my park pass, parked in the lot, and was on my way to this awesome adventure. Packed water, sunblock, bugspray, hat, long sleeve sun shirt, and some food. Picked up a map at the visitor center. The ferry ride is great. It goes quickly. I chose to explore on my own. It was so much fun, hiking the trails and beaches. And also seeing the ruins. The best was the wild horses. They are all over. The new babies were so cute! Behind Dungeness keep walking to the water. They hang out in a few separate groups way back there. Just an amazing experience! I will be back. One day is not enough time. Camping would be ideal and also bicycles.

Tonya Davis

Very unique experience. Ferry was relaxing to the island. We chose to explore the river trail and the Dungeness Ruins. There many other area to experience but we were limited on time. Take sunscreen, picnic lunch/snacks, and water for the trip. You can even camp out overnight and fish. Great family fun!

Jessica Waynick

Make sure to wear comfy shoes, have water and rent bikes! Had a blast! Saw wildlife, beautiful beaches, and great bike paths

Reuben Stugart

Awesome kayak trip and several days of camping. Do your research and pay attention to the tides if you want to take this on!

Frank Black

This location is great place to visit and relax.

Aidan Cantin

Very beautiful beach. Lots of shells due to the lack of people.

Dean Miller

Love the horses!

Winnie Kennedy

So Bueatiful . you see wild horses walk by you like you are not there . Deer walk around free . old buildings . so much to explore . love this island .

Rob Martin

Interesting shoreline with beautiful driftwood

Amy Norris

Beautiful. There are swings to watch the water, docks, a fountain, a gazebo, an amphitheatre, bait store, bathrooms, a really cool high tide clock, children's playground, and dogs are welcome with responsible owners.

Marie Johnston

Wonderful! The Land and Legacies van tour is wonderful

Joe Rizza

Not open to the public, fascinating history, wild horses roam freely, natural unspoiled area. One extremely high end hotel on the island only accessable by boat. Visit and view from the water only, by boat sightseeing tour from Fernandina. Bring binoculars.

Jenny Erickson

Hiked the recommended loop but adjusted course and timing a bit to avoid the worst of the crowds. If you like a little more privacy I would recommend deviating from the loop they recommend.

Michael Keegan

Very scenic

Archie Sean

Awesome little house we came across while walking around. We love the house

Jon Boy

Beautiful.

Julissa Rodriguez

The island is absolutely breathtaking. Forest, sand dunes, beaches, fields, HORSES. It has everything. I can't wait to go again.

Mel Bellwood

Great times, walk the island and see nature.

Niccole Wildes

Absolutely amazing.

David Strickland

Beautiful place

Kelly McClellan

The beach was beautiful! Great escape!

Lara Morgan

Enjoyed fishing of the shore of Cumberland. We took a charter out of Jekyll Island. Unfortunately boats on Jekyll are not allowed to drop people of on Cumberland.

Andrea Witwer

An escape to unimaginable tranquility!

Vicky De La Cruz

I fell in love with this place!

Jon Bedingfield

Words can't accurately describe the natural beauty and man made wonders of this unique treasure...a must see for all...

Kevin Albert

Awesome place. Lots of walking and it's really hot and humid. Horses running wild and an abundance of wildlife. Old homes and homesites. Sand dunes and a large open beach. Take something to eat and drink. Bike rentals are available.

Scott

This park is really a must on anyone's bucket list. A ferry takes you over in the morning and picks you up in the evening. I was initially thinking what in the world are we going to do all day. Let me say that Cumberland Island didn't disappoint and I wish we had more time to see everything. My family will definitely be going back. Something I would highly recommend is renting a bike on the island. This made seeing more of the island easier and just an amazing time to enjoy the moss oak tree covered paths.

Tara B

Nice and relaxing. When you're there you don't have a care in the world. Just make sure you have water and snacks! There is no place to purchase drinks, food or anything. There are some water refill stations along the way, but not many. It's $10 each person to enter the island. We did the 4 mile walk and it was really nice. We took the ferry from St. Marys.

jason c

Great place for a day of hiking...mix of woodlands beach and history. Bring your beach bike and ride on the hard pack sand...rental bikes aren't allowed on the beach so keep that in mind. Free boat dockage but sign says only allowed Fri/sat/sun which I don't get. Huge beautiful island been many times and not even close to seeing it all

Sarah Mcneill

Beautiful place that everyone should visit...it will be unforgettable and you will want to rerurn.

Laura McGuffey

Always a great way to spend a day. We go by boat. Anchor out for lunch. Southern dock closed, but we dinghy ashore, staying away from boat ramp where ferry pulls up. Or do the same at the next dock. Read signs. They are posted.

Coach K

I very much enjoyed my time here. It is a remarkably beautiful area. It's pretty. It's nice. It's spread out. It is indeed a prime place for camping, hiking, capturing astounding photos, and bike riding. If you are a shell person, the the coastline here is the place for you. The largest collection of pristine shells I've yet to come across! I would definitely return

Marty Barron

Love the coffee I got there

Bonnie Jobe

Wild and natural setting. Boat ride over had beautiful views! The van for the tours is comfortable and air conditioned. The roads are not paved anywhere, it's just sand and dirt, and the trees canopy over the roads. You feel like you are traveling back in time, to a bygone era. It's delightful!

Margie Jury

We came just for the beach! It was beautiful! But it's a bring everything on take everything off kind of island. Walking the 1/2 mile loaded down with a cooler, chairs and a 4 year old was a bit challenging. It was gorgeous though! I'm not sure we would be back though.

Evangeline Cordova

Natural beauty! Must see. Undisturbed nature

mark lundquist

The history here is amazing. Wild horses, Ruins of mansions. You can only imagine the great splendor that this place once Had! Would go back again in a heartbeat!

Bruce Hunter

Visited for wife and family friend to get stamps in their national parks passport. Talked to ranger about the park and its museum. Spent time in the museum going through the displays. It was very informative and free. Could not go out to the island itself as we arrived after the last ferry departed. Visitors who want to go to the island should check the park web page for the very schedule and allow plenty of time to arrive, park and purchase tickets.

Jerry Sullivan

If this place doesn't GET YOUR MAGIC ON you need to stay home!! It is remote, as nature intended..it can be harsh, as nature is from time to time.. primarily, IT IS BEAUTIFUL as nature is!

Jared S

Go! The wilderness campsites are calling your name. In my opinion, Brickhill Bluff is the best one and is the hardest to get to by walking, because it's the furthest (10.5 miles). It's worth it for the views and easy access to water (needs treatment/filtering). Or you could stay near the center at Yankee Paradise so it's s short walk in the morning to see the sunrise and again to the west for sunsets a Plum Orchard. Both the sunrise and sunset views were gorgeous (and private) and I'd highly recommend your visit in the early-mid Spring or mild temperature Fall. There are only wild animals on the island (no tames ones), so don't go trying to make friends with the horses. There's even a bobcat which is occasionally seen. DON'T FEED THE ANIMALS! Getting them too used to humans may cause an incident that needs them to be destroyed.

Tiffany Mann

Clean beaches unspoiled habitat historical fort views of wild horses gator and dolphin. This place is awesome!

April Goldwire

Great time.

Johnny Troup

Nice and quiet. Walking trail and swim beach

Matt Schenecker

The tour was great and the captain and his first mate were entertaining as well as providing interesting facts about the history of Cumberland Island . I have been on their cruises three times and have always enjoyed it!

Christine

Wonderful visit today, saw horses, turkeys, armadillo, collected really great shells, biking fantastic, Carnegie ruins awesome. ..Beach GREAT!

Charlie Stevens

This is a fantastic Island that used to be owned by the Carnegie family! It is good to go in February and March. There are a wide range of things to do including biking kite flying on the beach swimming and of course hiking and camping :-)

Duane Nicolette

If you love to explore or even camp this is the place to go. Wild horses and deer populate the island and it has such a rich history.

Dennis Jones

Natural untouched paradise

Samaria Bulemu

The waters were calm and relaxing and the boat ride was informative. We enjoyed seeing the submarine submerge into the water. It is an amazing place to visit. It was not to crowded, so you are able to enjoy yourself.

Amy D

Rent a bike! Found a perfect spot for lunch and some awesome sharks teeth

Alexandra Marvar

Gorgeous wilderness. "Attractions" (mansions, ruins) are far apart -- if you're coming for a day trip, bring a bike. Our stay at the Greyfield was lovely -- dinner available there even for non guests with a reservation.

Ashley Whitaker

Beautiful place

Adam Croft Broxton

One of a kind place. I highly recommend camping and renting a bike. On one morning I wrote out of the camp at day break.. I saw hogs, foxes, horses and countless deer. The surf fishing is incredible

William Goughnour

Did a boat tour and saw bald eagles, dolphins, horses, and much more. A really good tour and tour guide with Amelia boat tours.

J Gudger

Most beautiful idyllic coastal scenery in Georgia

Kayla James Johnson

A beautiful national seashore. I highly recommend a day trip over.

Edna McDermott

Very unique place for relaxing. We chose to explore the river trail. There are many other area to experience but we were limited on time. Take sunscreen, picnic lunch/snacks, and water for the trip. You can even camp out overnight and fish. Great family fun!

Janine Hughes-Cornell

Beautiful location and well kept facilities. We enjoyed walking around the area and it gave us a nice break from the traveling that day.

Amanda Sawning

This was am awesome boat ride

Roundaround80

I would like to see some solar-powered lights placed on the beach markers. When you are traveling at night along the beach, it would make traveling more convenient.

Mark Little

Like a trip back in time to the gilded age. Our forest service park ranger provided a great walking tour which ended at the Dungeness Estate ruins. The landscape appears untouched by the modern world.Do yourself a favor and explore on foot.

Annebritt Birkeland

GORGEOUS! Piloted a cataraman to the south beach, watched dolphins bank fish along the river and bubble net in the bay, found hermit crabs, flounder and so many more fish & shells along the beach and enjoyed peaceful moments with wild horses as they grazed. Loved. Every. Second.

Toni Larimore

Phenomenal adventure! Definitely a place where you need more than a single visit to see the majority of the island (unless you take the tour). My husband and I had a great day and will return for another visit!

Eddie Canales

Beautiful and it was so peaceful - we didn't see another person our entire time (after leaving the ferry). And since there aren't many people, the beaches were full of awesome shells and sand dollars. My only regret was not coming over on the morning ferry. Could have spent so much more time there.

Al Sherling

beautiful. saw several horses.

Viktoria Nyari

Wild horses and armadillos. Beautiful walk in nature. Wonderful views and one can spend a day to discover this island.

david cencak

Very scenic worth the visit
