REVIEWS OF Chickamauga National Military Park IN Georgia

Lesley Roberts

It's truly beautiful place to walk and read about history. The museum is very informative and they do reenactments during the year. But really the just driving through is very serene. Recommend going here if you are a history buff homeschool family or just enjoy being outside in nature. Or even driving through, I often take the detour to go through the tree lined roads

Thane Mitchell

Beautiful battlefield from the Civil War. If you take your time visiting the sites of where battles took place, they will educate you and make you appreciate the country we are today, despite our differences. You realize that that's what makes us the greatest country on earth! Such a beautiful place to walk the dogs, go riding a bicycle, take a hike or just lounge on a blanket in one of their large fields. Landmark statues all over the place, historic and remarkable! I go any time I want to get some fresh air and soak in our history.

Katrina Meinel

We went during their anniversary celebration and it was SO informative and very well done. It was interesting for our whole family. We spent so much longer there than we had planned because it was so fun.

William Boydston

The park is beautiful and very well kept. Watch out for the cyclists!!

Marie Lucia D'Andrea Bartolameolli

Love civil war places. They fire the real Cannon's on certain anniversaries. They just did one a few weeks ago. It's a awesome place to go

Hugh Hicks

Beautifully done park. Love Civil War history. Makes me proud of where I come from.

David Wynn

Staffs are friendly, informative. Parks are well organized. The orientation movie at visitor center worths every second of your time and so does the museum...too much history to be learned in one visit

Wanda Stephenson

We love the Battlefield! I was born and raised in this area. It never gets old.

Barbara Bean

Always Love This place ❤️

David Brownsword

love me some civil war history! the park itself is well kept and the visitor center has lots of good info. it even has a theater which was a nice surprise

Rowan W

Beautiful park. Convenient bathrooms scattered around. I would visit multiple times a week. The visitor's center was very interesting and the staff was very friendly and helpful.

Heather Simones/Shanks

Beautiful well taken care of. Wished all the rds was open a little later

Aaron Harris

Tones of monuments, trails and historical plaques. You certainly cannot see this entire place in one day.

Cheryl Hoeppner

This was so great to see them shot off a cannon today. Got to see and what it heard like dearly the war.

Cindy Corle

There is a great visitor center at both Chickamauga and Lookout Mountain. Be sure to watch the film. If you enjoy looking at antique guns, make time to look at the collection at Chickamauga.

2009WorldChampion

Chickamauga is a great place to go to see our history laid out right where it happened. Hundreds of markers and memorials to tell the story of one of the largest Civil War battles. Peaceful and serene, it just does something to you.

Donna Freeman

I drive thru here everyday going to work. Very peaceful drive

Jenn Kraschnewski

Easy self-guided tour around the park. You can call a number for audio guide as well. Lots of little trails to explore and dog friendly!

Rocco Cipriani

One helluva hike but well worth it if you are a Civil War buff or like spectacular views

Brian Argetsinger

Lots of options to take different trails for return trips.

Steele Showalter

Very nice quiet place to walk. Every person I ran into was very friendly.

Paul Oudenhoven

Nice slow paddle upstream 2.5 miles and back

Steven Crowley

Amazing historical location with tons of activitys for the whole family.

Mary Fincher

One of the best battlefields out there to visit! Plan on spending a few days here to see everything, including Point Park at Lookout Mountain. Start at the Visitor's Center and view the 30 minute film. They also have excellent displays as well as a decent book shop. The Park Rangers are always friendly and helpful.

Laine Williams

So much history! The welcome center has a 20 minute movie that is a must see. Also has an awesome gun collection. A driving tour at your leisure is very well marked and set up for activation from your phone for details about each site. Heaps of photo opportunities. Everywhere you looked in the distance there was a monument.

Susan F.

Lots of monuments, in a drive through, audio narrated, go at your own pace way.

Ronda Walker

Beautiful and well maintained park. Has paved side roads which are secluded with nature and very wheelchair accessible. My friend felt like she was hiking the trails herself!

NoOne Knows

Could spend all day there. It was great

Scott Campen

Went here for a run, and it was peaceful, open, and beautiful. For my purposes, it would have gotten 5 stars if there was better trail surfaces (lots of standing water), and more interconnecting trails. But all in all, a quiet place with (obviously) a lot of history.

Ashley Geise

Such a wonderful historic site. Well preserved piece of history.

Steven Rust

Great staff from the NPS and a great visit. We biked the park with a free trails map and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. You could stay for 2 weeks and not see all there is in this park. If you are a Civil War geek (like me), this is a MUST SEE Park. Although the buildings shut down at 5, the park is open until dark. Take water on hot days!!!

Jim Mowrey

This was the largest battlefield in the Civil War, and the 2nd bloodiest battle. We did the self guided tour, with a map, and our cell phones to listen to points of interest. It was a bit of a let down for me. I don't know what I expected, but whatever it was, I didn't get it. Maybe it would've been better if we'd been there earlier in the year, and we'd taken a Ranger guided tour. Will try this one again maybe next year.

Lee Wills

excellent. The people at the center were most helpful. Signage a little difficult but very interesting.

Harrison Lewis

Excellent, excellent place to visit. Alot was totally free. Excellent park services, very friendly and knowledgable about this history.

Ken Ewbank

Great visitor's center to start with. Takes at least a day to see most of the monuments. Well worth visiting!

LongLifeHerbs GA

Wonderful place to picnic. Go for a hike/walk. Just a gorgeous place.

Truman Hall

It's a great park. Tons of monuments and historical landmarks. Good place for a walk, bike ride, or even scenic car ride

Samantha Cummings

Really neat Civil War park. There are markers on a driving trail to see where Confederate soldiers and Union soldiers fought. During the drive there is a stop you can climb a tower for a beautiful view of the area. It gets dark in places so watch your step! The visitor center has a lot of information for history buffs. There are canons out front and a whole very large gun collection inside that my husband took his sweet time looking through.

Derek Harville

Best place in northwest GA and Chattanooga TN to go to play Pokemon Go. Unfortunately, GA has made it illegal to drive while using your phone so as long as you don't get caught, or park and walk it's still one of the best places.

Tonya Meeks

Beautiful place. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking.

Andrew Cross

Amazing time exploring the battlefield lots to see and do

Dean Hervat

I was impressed during our visit. The visitor center is great. We timed it perfectly and joined a tour led by a ranger ... in a caravan of cars! The ranger drove to three crucial sites and about six cars followed. At each site everybody got out to hear the story of what went down at that spot, and then back in the cars to be led to the next spot. What a great idea! Tip: bring a folding chair to sit in while the ranger talks. The guy was super cool weaving the story of the battle. If you're into history this place is a gem, other wise its a nice nature preserve.

Jan Lambert

Love it here! So many walking, running and bike trails. All the monuments have a lot of history on them to check out. Great for just being by yourself or family and friend outing. Lots of places just to pull over and go hike on the trails. This is place not to miss if you are in the area.

Michael Garrett

A wonderful bit of history. Extremely easy to navigate. Unable to get info from Visitor's Center since it was closed due to gov't shutdown. But the trail was very well marked and audio descriptions were available at several points. Plaques marked positions of troops (was able to find where my gr gr grandfather's Regiment was, stood where he might have stood, waiting for the battle to begin). There are also monuments erected by both sides, helping to mark where a particular action took place. If you go, allow yourself at least a couple of hours if you do just the driving tour. Or you can spend a day or more taking the trails and getting more of a sense of the history of the place. It is some amazing history.

B Hudspeth

So nicely maintained and beautifully designed. With the Civil War being so misunderstood it is nice to step back in time and see proof that life and people and circumstances were far different from anything we can comprehend today.

Lance

Interesting muesum with a film show that shows the battle very well

G Waites

Beautiful Park oh, lots of walking trails and great staff. Can't wait to go back

Jett K.

Wonderful, detailed description of battle and lasting impression on the nation. Great tour guides/rangers.

Curtis Deaver

Was one of the nicest parks I've been to. All the rangers were helpful and always willing to answer your questions. The trails were clean and well maintained. The park itself is beautiful, SO many monuments and markers. The tours, both auto and hiking are well marked so there is no difficulty following them. So quiet and peaceful when I was there, I saw a deer laying in the shade next to a fallen leaders monument.

Juney Shober

This is a nice place to explore. I took my dogs there to walk around and we had a good time and it inspired me to learn more about the civil war history of this area. I plan to go back without the dogs to do some more of the historical stuff

samantha reynolds

Always love walking through the battlefield!! Love the history..

James Blount

Lots of trails. Learned a lot about battle I knew very little about. Liked that didn't have to use an app to listen to driving tour.

Tiffany Green

This place is so peaceful and beautiful. I love to ride my bike or drive around looking for deer or other beautiful things in nature to photograph.

Kevin Morgan

A fantastic place to learn about a portion of U.S. history-hopefully it won't be lost by current and future generations! This site MUST be preserved! Have family buried in an unmarked Federal grave here (served with the 9th OH VI), so it holds a special place for us. Thank you to all of the great staff here.

LaTricia Franklin

I love going to the park..historic fun(learning about the civil war) meets gaming fun(PokemonGo) both with some walking and out doors nature..the best

Rafael Peña

First off, thank you Claud and Zenada Fuller for your donation. Everyone check out the Fuller Gun Collection. Good way to spend an hour. Our country is truly amazing where you can visit the entire site, the visitors center for free. They have a well directed movie about the battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga and the Park has multiple locations besides the major battlefields. May we all learn from their sacrifices. If you can go, go visit it and appreciate some history.

Kim Clark

Very interesting. The monuments are beautiful and we enjoyed the car tour. We also loved seeing all of the the deer that were out!

Deborah Stephenson

Beautiful place to ride bikes! Amazing bike store!

Dan Spahr

I can't visit often enough. The Park Ranger led programs are terrific.

Lisa Wiley

Absolutely beautiful! I love this Battlefield!

Lisa Jones

I've been going there since i was a teen i love it

Becky Brown

Beautiful place. Very peaceful and we saw several deer.

David Hooper

We ride our bikes through here several times a week. There are a bunch of people riding in here all the time so drivers are used to it and respectful. The scenery is great and the wildlife are far from shy so they don't run away when you go by. If your a history enthusiast there is a lot to learn too!

Thomas Whited

The visitor center was great. I would definitely spend some time there first. We watched the movie, which provided a great historical synopsis of what happened at the park and lookout mountain. The park has nice, easy to follow signs for a tour around the park that you can drive to, and you can call into a phone number to get an audio tour. The park itself is well maintained and has a plethora of monuments, canons, and open areas and trails to walk around.

Mandel Cook

My kid loves going! So many deer walking around.

Derek_Noel Sorensen

It was amazing cant wait to do it again soon

kenny wu

The largest military park in the US. A great place to learn but also to escape as they have miles upon miles of open trails. Absolutely worth a visit.

B B

So cool. Great views without being ripped off at the place that charges

THAPOWEROF1 UGA

Hey what can I say..... after 27 plus years I'm back home. I have always loved this place. Great place to grow up and live in.

Michael Battey

Acres and acres of history, with a stunning and beautiful visitors center tucked into a lovely rural setting. Bravo and well done! I'm going back soon.

Carol Hemmings

I love biking here, it's a big challenge for me, hills and more hills, and a little history education everytime. I've done 20 miles in one ride. Horseback riding allowed, great family outing, with lots of deer.

Dawn Combs

Clean grounds with lots of historic monuments and trails. The visitor's center has educational movies and relics.

Carolyn Ritchart

Beautiful peaceful place with plenty of wildlife nice place for family gatherings or to just take a walk their is a beautiful museum with plenty of civil war relics

Philip S

Pristine and well preserved park. The visitor center offers a 30 minute video to give visitors an overview of the battle and events that took place there. A tour with cell phone audio guides takes you through the battle step-by-step.

Kyle Yebba

Wonderful place with a beautiful view. It was very quiet, though that may have been because it was closed due to the government shutdown. Regardless, we may or may not have jumped the wall to check it out and view the cannons. There's a nice souvenir shop nearby as well.

Wes Harris

The movie was great. The car route tour was free and informative. Stop at 6 and climb the castle. So pretty, not just history but an attempt to restore after this bloody civil war. When we went there was also an extensive gun collection on display.

Amy Rector

I absolutely love the battlefield. Deer roam around, owls are flying as well as Hawks and crows. Its been well preserved and I love that they have statues, monuments and that they have a lot of information for those that aren't as familiar with it. The visitors center is nice too. I've been told they do reenactment plays, so that would be very neat to see. Very educational there and they have a cpl of cabins that are either original or replicas of an old jail and house. The cannons that sit throughout the park are nice too. The tower is gorgeous, yet a challenge to get to the top. It gives you a deeper appreciation for the soldiers that used it during their time. When standing at the top. The view is amazing. Very clean, well maintained. Nice for picnics, and you can ride your horses through there as well. Take walks or ride your bicycles. Either way, it's very nice. No season, is better than the other there. Highly recommend.

Erica Corbitt

My dogs and I love all the trails here. Easy to move between paved and dirt trails. People mostly abide the speed limit so it's pretty safe. For some reason, there are no more trash cans around the parking lots which makes it difficult for me to get rid of my dogs' waste.

Debra Lines

Beautiful site. Looked at some lovely town homes along the river. It would be a great place to retire to.

Angela Gilbreath

Great place for history and spending quality time with your family and friends.

Gavyn Paschal

The battlefield was very great of an experience as in the fact that we got to hear and see SO much history. It was a amazing experience. And we will be going again. If you have kids, are in a good spot schedule wize.. this would be a great place to go.

Donnie Stephens

Beautiful area was pleasant places to sit and talk picnic and get to know one another and also a very educational environment

John Pulliam

Absolutely loved visiting here and seeing more than I had....even with living so close to there all my life. Highly recommend it for anyone who wants to see relics of the civil war.

judy waits

An awesome Walk thru our history.

Martin Bailey

Next time I hope to walk the grounds. Did see a good show about the Battle of Chattanooga.

James Lloyd

Incredibly well preserved, historically accurate, and just a beautiful place. Reminds me a lot of Shiloh.

Tiki Johnson

I grew up in the area so the Park has always been a part of my life and I consider it one of the best places to visit

Kacey McDaniel

I've lived beside this park for many years. I love walking the trails and being close to nature. The history of the place is fascinating. I'm happy to live so close to a national treasure.

Georgia Peach

It's beautiful just need a little upkeep

Hunting Maniac

Very informative and helpful staff. Huge area. Wish we had more time to see it all.

wolfy savige king

Always fun and gives the kids plenty of room to run and wear them self out lol

Sean Kornacki

Not what I thought it was going to be. Some of the vendors were cool, but others seemed like they had the same things. Some 40 or 50 vendors were like 10. Maybe it was timing. I went around lunchtime.

Tina Fluermond

While the battle that took place at Chickamauga was a win for the Confederates it in fact marked a turning point in the war as the Union side followed it up with a win inn Chattanooga which set the stage for Sherman's march through Georgia. Be sure to drop buy the visitor's center to get a great overview of the battle and the park guide. There's an easy to follow driving tour with eight spots that gives you all of the key highlights. We also listened to the audio tour portion which can be accessed through a website noted on the guide. The park is quite large and the number of memorials overwhelming (more than 700). Be sure to walk up to the top of Wilder Monument for great views over the battlefield. There are also many great sites to see in the Chattanooga area which are highlighted in the park brochure.

Will Steed

Great trails and very scenic. Very easy to spot deer as well since they'll walk almost right to you. Fantastic place to go hike / walk with your dogs.

Bri Lindstrom

Had a nice visit. Would have liked more interaction from employees. They were efficient, but not friendly.

Patrick Nolan

Great history. Worth the short drive again part of a great visit to Chattanooga

Tim Patz

This is spectacular park. Had the opportunity to run through this park several times while working in the area. The final day ran the entire park from visitor center 9+ miles around back. Great day. If in the area and looking for a place to get some miles in, take advantage to the sights and beauty.

Sheldon Ware

Very nice well-kept facility. Lots of deer around 6 to 7 in the evening. A lot of history in a great place for family day. You could definitely spend the entire day or two walking around looking at various plaques and checking out the other awesome amenities that this facility has to offer. Also includes a pretty nice museum with knowledgeable and friendly staff

williAm Holz

Incredible historic site. Very well maintained and mapped out. Restrooms are scarce so heads up.

Quiet. People are friendly - but not intrusive. Great place to run.

Doug Ford

A favorite Park to hike along with all the national history. A very well maintained large park too.

Rebecca Welch

Enjoyed finding out about our history as a people and a country. We have visited many National Parks and Monuments and each one enriches ones appreciation of our ancestors. Trials that many of us today would wilt under the pressure.

Linda Dressler

The views are just spectacular. I love starting at the bottom of the mountain and hiking up to the top....FUN!!!

Emily Elrod

This place is awesome. I haven't been here since I was a child and just remembered it as the place with cannons and a few battles were at.... well my thoughts have been totally change. They have a phone guide tour with signs that make it so easy to follow. It was a joy and my 4 and 8yr old loved it. Great job making history fun!

Chris Chandler

Fun to have a place to let my dog off leash to sniff to her hearts content. She's never more than 30 feet ahead of us scouting and she has a blast!

J H Spain.

Great place to take kids. Good history.

The Know It All Naturalist

Beautiful and well done. Informative and great place to ride your bike. Saw lots of families riding.

Michael Walton

Very austere grounds with several markers locating the different divisions on both sides of the Civil War. The visitors center is chock full of historical information. A very scenic drive. Lots if hiking opportunities.

Anthony Miles

A great historical place to visit with living history demonstrates. They fired the cannon. What could be better than that. Friendly staff, very well kept and clean.

Ken Wallin

Really a amazing spot to vist they dont have alot of spot for kids and strollers without being on a road but the roads arent busy odf the main one an there usual deer in the early more and dusk in the open for you to see

Mark Hyaduck

Chickamauga Battle fields are a wonderful site to see, full of Civil War History as is Many Places in Chattanooga TN and the surrounding area. Anyone visiting or new to the Area should spend a day checking it out. Although I don't think you can visit all the Historical Places around Our Great City. This Area is rich in more than just Civil War History, Indian History aswell. Chickamauga Lake is also a great place to for Boating, Fishing and Recreational use.

keithandaninha

This is a huge national park that displays on a large scale the battles between Union troops and Confederate troops. It is in the Chattanooga Vicinity and is not hard to find. The visitors center is full of exhibits, a theater and a large scale map showing the geography of the battlefield. The center is manned by knowledgeable and helpful U.S. park rangers. The highlight is a guided car tour of the battlefield accompanied by very well versed Park Ranger who gave talks at each stop.

Ronald Wieszczyk

$7 to see this view is worth it and check the times for the park ranger lecture/tour. They are very informative.

Toni K

It's a full day's visit, at least. Visitor center is nice to visit half way through the day, to take a break, see the Battle of Chickamauga movie, browse the gift store. Buy something to support the park!

TROY M

Great place. Historical history, glad they have preserved it well.

D. AISTROPO

The guide clearly studied oratory. Spellbinding.

Carolin Pollock

If your a battlefield buff ,this is a great place. The driving tour can be a bit confusing. Lots of monuments and markers to see. Some are hidden in the woods. There are several nice picknick areas , although you have to pack out your trash as there were no trash cans available.

Alexandria Bryan

I really enjoy walking my dogs in the park it is beautiful and I love the trails! I also enjoy bike riding and here unfortunately isn't the best place to ride bikes. It is okay if you want to casually ride on the road in the battlefield but I think trail rides should be permitted. At least have a specific trail for bike riders or let us ride on the 'horse trails' once a month. Not good for bikes. Great for walking.

Shane Cross

I thought it was nice peaceful place to go on a nice walk. Did not see the whole park, but the places we went were nice. The staff working the desk helped us out and recommended a great hike. If we had more time, might have hiked more. Trails were nice to walk with our dog.

Sarah S

Make sure you stop into the museum area. The collection of rifles they had was amazing. There had to have been hundreds starting in the 16-1700s. We also downloaded the national parks service app and then did the driving tour with it. It was great to learn so much stuff that you would not have without the app/radio. You really got a feel to how monumentally huge the battle was with the app and it taking you to different locations. We only planned for about 2 hours for this location and I wish we had planned longer. In the future we will go back and check out some of the hiking and walking trails.

Christopher Guelcher

A huge national park that one can explore for several days. Be sure to watch the award winning video that is shown in the Visitor Center before venturing out to explore the park.

Paula Stanton

Historic and educational. Friendly staff. Very enjoyable

Andrew Edwards

My wife and I loved it. We was short on time and didn't get to see it all. Def6coming back

Maranda Kelly

Educational. We have a museum with all of the civil war era weapons, wagons, rifles that have coffe grinders, or grain grinders! To make flour! There's a lil movie theater. Out in the park are cannons & plaques commemorating each battle. On some occasions they display actual canon shots! You can feel the rumble roll through the earth for miles! Really gives a glimpse of what our soldiers dealt with during the civil war. Out in the park- Peace. Serenity. If you you like taking long strolls though the woods- just enjoying nature- this is a great place for that! Highly likely to see deer, turkeys. On occasion you may be lucky enough to be in the presence of an owl! If you haven't visited- you should!

Kisa Wolf

Great place for pokemon go lol

Jerry Eddy

Historical. Quite a collection of rifles and civil war gear. Love tbat they keep history real for both sides, and don't try to erase historical statues like everywhere else is eradicating.

The Unknown Known

The wife and I went to take pictures before the storm came in. I would recommend seeing the tower while it's open. Be prepared for many, many, many steps. Lots of other places to visit. Trails to hike and horse trails if you have them.

1st Impression Advertising

I love historic places! This one is one of the most amazing places, you can feel the history come alive as you tour the fields. Cant be done in just a day

Sheree Hall

teresa dampier

A very interesting and informative park if you are a History buff. Beautiful and great for bike riding too.

John Sanker

Beautiful park with excellent interpretive self guided car audio tour. Highly recommend you stop at the visitor center at the start and watch the 25 minute movie about the battle. The center has excellent displays and historical details.

Brandi Tramazzo

One of the best battlefields to visit! Very interesting. The film at the visitors center is A MUST SEE! So glad we watched it prior to the driving tour.

Kelsey Glenn

Beautiful place. Great history. Wonderful place to experience a mixture of events; hiking trails, history tours, horseback riding trails, baby deer running around, pokemon go, and harry potter wizards unite.

Tony Collins

Very informative visitor's center with an incredible display of 250+ shoulder arms used in the Civil War, a theater that showed a 25 minute movie highlighting the Chickamauga and Chattanooga battles and their significance in the outcome of the war, and a great gift shop. Very friendly staff. Don't miss it! After the visitor's center, we did the auto tour. My 9 and 11 year old sons loved it.

Phoebe Huggins

Love this place. History is amazing. Kelley Log Cabin is from my Grandmother's family.

Wyrd Blogger

It is a interesting place to meditate on where the heroic sons of the south fought.

Rebia Gates

One of the best days ever, the preservation of our civil war is astonishing

Krystdevon Blues

This was a wonderful experience that we did on our own without a map or tour guide. We just followed the signs and got out when we wanted to explore. We saw wild deer in the fields and found a tree branch that had been destroyed by carpenter ants and had likely just fell! I think we may have picked up a tick there but I flicked it out the window. Awesome building we climbed to the top. Interesting to think that a war went on right where we were walking and that they died there. Sacred ground. Peaceful now and may we remember the sacrifice.

Kenny Tomlin

Chickamauga Battlefield the great place provides living history programs bicycle races in bicycling great place for Law and over 80 miles of hiking trails

Kiree Jeans

Peggy M

Beautiful! Well kept! Don't forget sunscreen and water!!!

Kyle Schadewald

I love this place I go every time I'm not around it's so beautiful I would go any chance I get

Richard McGinnis

I lived there for years. Lots of civil war history. Very nice city, Chickamauga, Ga.

Bones McNally

Fine display of different examples of Civil War era artillery outside the main entrance of the Visitor Center. Inside, a very helpful staff provide maps, information, advice and tips about the battlefield and surrounding points of interest - of which there are many. There is a gift shop, small museum and a film screening room where the visitor can watch a video that provides background info on the Civil War and of the military engagements that took place in and around Chatanooga.

Ceasar Phoenix

The battles of Chicamauga and Chattanooga, were pinnacle in opening the South to the Advance of.the Union Army, on Sherman's march to the Atlantic and the battle of Atlanta. The park has a small museum at the visitors center, be sure to check out the Fuller gun collection. Various monuments are around the Federal park dedicated to both the confederate and union army. Bring you're walking shoes and since most of the battlefield is outside be sure the weather is agreeable. The Rangers and staff were awesome.
