Wonderful location with LOADS of potential! We had a WONDERFUL day there celebrating the 375 anniversary of New Sweden with the Kalmar Nyckel and Swedish museum and Lenape and Nanticoke and many others!

Definitely avail of the free guided tour to fully appreciate this site. Our guide was very passionate and knowledgeable and he really made the place come to life with all the interesting stories about the once-thriving Swedish fort and colony. After the guided tour, you can hang around and admire scenic views of the Christina River. You can also visit a nice museum next door commemorating the Kalmar Nyckel, one of the ships that carried the settlers from Europe to this place.

Fort Christina Park is on a tidal peninsula between Brandywine Creek and the Christiana River. It preserves the original landing spot and settlement of Delaware by Swedish settlers. The park is essentially the footprint of the original fort, plus the actual "blue rocks" that are a bit unusual in the tidal flats. One big bonus to this park is that it is virtually next to the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, the home port of the Kalmar Nyckel, Delaware's premier tall ship. Visit both for a great evening into the history of Delaware before it was even Delaware.

Small park but big history. You have to speak with the park rangers to really appreciate the park and its significance; otherwise, it's just a monument at the end of a 15 minute visit.

Ryan Gingo

A small park with a great story! Fort Christina park was built in 1938 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Swedish settlement at that location. The highlight of the park is a Swedish black granite monument commemorating the voyage of the Kalmar Nyckel from Gothenburg, Sweden to what is now Wilmington, Delaware. The ship moored at the famous Blue Rocks, which are still visible at the end of the park. A star fort was built here and the settlement thrived for 20 years. This is a cornerstone of Delaware history and an important part of the American story. This was also the site of the first log cabin in America! What a lot of history for such a small park.
