REVIEWS OF Hammonasset Beach State Park IN Connecticut

Mark Rivard

Great Campground. Huge open grass sites. Short walk to the beach. Most sites are dry camping (no hook ups). They also have a 4 lane dump station in the campground with a potable water source and a double lane Dump at the exit.

Peter Gaffney

Huge, two mile beach...plenty of space whether you’re alone or in a big group...looking over the Long Island Sound.

Howard Cohn

Largest state park in CT. Beautiful beach with large facilities buildings.

Ernie Taddei

Very clean beach. Water was fantastic. Please people...dont sit so close when there are miles of beach...or dont scream when you talk and blast 3 boom boxes of different language music all within 20 feet of each other.

Heather Lyon

Nice little beach for my son to play by himself. Lots of shells of you like to collect them.

joaquin quiles

Awesome place to go Camping at the Beach.

Koulchi Tvdz

Very nice beach , free parking

Tara Porterfield

This place was filled with gnats. Whatever kind of gnat they were, they were biting. From the parking lot to the beach. As soon as we opened the car doors to get out, the gnats flooded into the car and they were all over us as we rushed to grab our things from the car. Once we got to the beach and realized they were still everywhere and other people were trying to swat them away, we realized we wouldn’t be able to sit their and get by constantly. I don’t know what caused all those gnats to be everywhere or if it was the weather, I wouldn’t go back there. Wasn’t even worried about getting my 20 dollars back.

Bruce Provencher

I've never been here during beach season but off season is great. Lots of birds, great views, nice walking areas.

Horace Azasse

F'cking great!

Danielle R

Campsites seemed cramped. We didn't have much privacy. Showed up late and left around 7am during a long road trip. The beach access wasn't open so we couldn't stop there before we left. Bathroom/showers were pretty decent.

Brittany Casillas

Hammonasset Beach has a variety of things to do! 3 different sections of the beach to choose from so it's a little spread out! Not to mention they are redoing all of the areas! Bird watching is amazing as well as any other wildlife seen there! A conservation center is always a plus to add to a beach day to learn about some of the wildlife living in the area, as well as getting up close and personal with a touch tank with a variety of different species of animal! Definitely worth a day trip!

dma kp

Great beach and totally free for CT residents which is amazing! There are waves big enough for small children but no so huge that it is hard for kids to swim. Some trash on the beach and lots of smokers around which is nasty but overall a lovely beach! Clean bathrooms and snack bar which is great!

Amanda Eldridge

We camped for the weekend. For a last minute camping trip it was very nice. The sites are roomie, the only things to keep in mine is they make you rent a fire pit the camp sites don't already come with one.

Yahaira R.

Its a nice place for bike riding, beach and most of all camping is the best time to be spent with family. Only down fall is no pets allowed

Bobby Butcher

Great spot for a picnic, to camp and to bring the pups.

R S R

I did not like it because I couldn't stay in water for long. Water is not clean. Otherwise beach security and staff are good.

Chungcha Cho

Thank you, It was excellent. I enjoyed your place.

Shmuely Saklad

Great park! Very clean and great time by the water.

Tim Shablom

Very nice! ! Quiet! !

ben weekes

Beautiful body be ware of the weekends or gets crowded but amazing facilities hiking trails, beach, campground, fields to play in, cook out sites love it

Christine Scotti

Went to a winery close by and spent the afternoon at the beach. The weather was perfect, the sand was not rocky and I loved the clean bathrooms and snack station. I can't wait to go back and see what the whole park has to offer.

Zachary Kline

Beautiful, well kept park! The staff are friendly, the park is clean, and the people are very nice. Bathrooms are clean and include showers and a station to wash dishes. Picnick benches at every site and water spicits close by. Even with all of these services, it's so cheap!! Will definitely check out CT's other parks now! Only cons are that the beaches are a little shelly (no waves) and you need to bring a fire pit.

Raymond Bauer

The good: Nice place to spend a day at the beach. The park was clean as was the bathroom and showers were plentiful. At 22 dollars a car the entry fee seems fair until..... The bad: Get there early if you want a no hassle parking spot as there is nowhere near enough parking as I found out the hard way. The local constables are only to happy to write you a 92 dollar improper parking ticket if you try to be creative with where you put your vehicle . WARNING: There are unmarked handicapped parking spots located in the main lot just down from the pavilion. Your only clue will be painted symbols on the pavement which of course will be parked on top of and parking on any ( kinda ) grass is a no no as well. Best of luck.

Gary Marino

Grass areas looked excellent, however, I can not say that for the beach. We went to middle beach and from there North the sand was covered in shells, glass, Reed's. My wife and I Like this beach, but this was the worse condition we have seen . Opening weekend, what a way to start the season

richard persico

Great camping and fishing spot and inexpensive

Soreh Heros

4th year in a row camping at hammo for the 4th of july. Love it down there, never had problem with neighbors or anyone. And theirs stuff to do with kids besides just going to beach. It is a very good place to family vacay

The Reviewer 85

I went july 4 and it was very bad experience first they didn't let people go in after 10 I guess it was full had to park 2 miles away and walk. Get to the beach and it was very dirty and alot of trash in the water very upset that people don't take care of what they have for free. The camp site was by far the best thing I saw there. I ate a hotdog and fries but we had to wait at least 1 hour not organized for a large crowd. I dont think I will go back at all it is my opinion there are alot of people that love it there but my family and I won't go back. Stood there for like 2 hours and had to walk back when we get back towards where we park multiple car with ticket for different issue just be care where and how you park outside of park also don't park on the hight you will be fine to.

Alicja Jablonski

Perfect bicycle trail, good for family and kids, also you can bring your dog .dogs have one drinking station

Van Gugi

A beautiful place for sunbathing and walking. You can find many interesting natural things. In the winter on the beach you can find a shark egg and a knob for small slimaczków with shells, these are such springs. There is the Meigs Point museum where you will find out what animals inhabit this area and what vegetation there is. Very interesting place.

Lore Mathurin

In all the years I have been coming here to camp I have never seem campers beach so neglected. It's Dirty, the beach hasn't been groomed like the rest of the beach, the beach sand is full of oster shells making it like walking on broken glass. Why would you keep the entire beach clean and neglect campers beach? Very sad to see.

Sarah Mcqueen

Not wooded but convenient to many cities. It was the only campsite I've ever visited that didnt include fire pits. You have to pay additional to get them and figure out how to dispose of the hot coals before returning them. It being primarily such an open space makes it very easy to hear neighboring campers and be impacted by windy conditions. Dogs are also not allowed on campgrounds. The biggest pro is proximity to a beach.

Carmin Santaniello

Very nice and clean Nice place to soak up some sun

Erika Fermin

Nice clean beach

Christopher Walczak

The seagalls are jurks

Allison Pannella

Great camping spots, clean, family friendly, easy to get to

Snow Peng

Very rocky beaches. Very sharp shards of shells. Hard to walk bare feet.

Pam C

My two sisters and I had fun at the event that was there on Sunday. In the afternoon we walked around the campground that we grew up on. Fun day and beautiful weather.

Rebecca Cao

The trail along the beach is great!

Steve Hanpuppet

A great place to go relax and enjoy nature. With the recently redone sidewalk and new nature center, the beach is now more enjoyable and easier to walk around. Go for a walk, swim, bike ride, picnic, run, drive, party, bird watching, tan, or whatever else you do at the beach. Hammonasset Beach State Park has something for everyone.

Lily Molina

It's an amazing park. I always have a good time there. Clean and very convenient for bathrooms, dumpsters and grills.

Ana Lynn

nice beaches, clean campground, what more do you want?

Allison McSpedon

This is one of our favorite places to go every summer. Simply beautiful and very accessible for families.

Noel Bennett

Rained heavy during the first day of our stay. Tent stayed relatively dry, but the area around the picnic table was pooling. Plenty of tents were under water. There are no fire rings set up; renting fire pots from the camp store or bringing your own is required. Staff are pleasant enough, but seem disinterested. Camping restrooms were beat up a bit. The beach, however, was great. Restrooms there were well appointed. Plenty of space on the beach itself, even though it was obviously a popular beach on the sunny day of our stay. Parking was a bit crowded, but doable.

juan fabregas

Went here for the 4th of July, entry and exit was quick and easy although the place was packed. The beach has hard shells in the sand so flops are recommended. Good place to come and relax.

Mark H.

Not sure how it is now, but used to be terrible. DEP cops and other cops all over the place harassing you and giving you tickets for the everything, patrolling for expired registrations. Alcohol allowed in campgrounds for a horrible camping experience. Letting cheap golfers who don’t want to pay for country club memberships use fields for golf courses, almost got hit with golf balls a few times. Letting people ride horses in the beach and not cleaning up. Like everything else about Corrupticut, corrupt and police state atmosphere in this place. At least residents don’t have to pay to park anymore. Only positive thing they’ve ever done in all the years I’ve gone there.

Hannah Pape

When I went here, I went to the Meig's Point portion of the beach. This beach is very beautiful; the sand is very clean and there is a nice rock pier for fishing. However, a lot of the sand is very shelly and not very pleasant to walk on with bare feet, so be sure to keep your sandals on. There is a facility for restrooms, showers, and changing.

Ruth Krapova

Gross water, too many people...

Ricardo Sanchez

Very nice and relaxing the food was very good and the price was just right.

Matthew Madri

our premier vacation spot!

Charlotte Marshall

Rocks and broken shells make this sand very uncomfortable to walk on. I wouldn't recommend walking down the beach without shoes. Other than that they have a food court and decent bathrooms. I still prefer Rocky Neck for their sand/trails/view

Tammy Baudoux

Smells of sewage and much litter on the beach

Edward Horn

Of course the beach is one of the best in New England, wild, extensive and natural. But do not ignore the interior. It's one of the last remainders of the vast marshlands that once covered the coast. These were the landscapes that inspired the Luminist painters like Martin Johnson Head. If you are familiar with Heade's work, Hammonasset is probably the last place you can find terrain that matches his paintings. There's at least one of his works that seems close enough to have actually been painted there. You can go here for summertime fun, but it is also a place of quiet contemplation.

Joan Berk

Love the beach but you really need to put up signs that say do not walk on the pathway barefoot. Was there on a not very hot day, probably in the 70's, walked down the path (not thinking) and burned the bottom of my foot. It is charred! I worry about the children. My 65 year old feet have been hardened as I walk barefoot all the time. Theirs are not. Please put a warning sign that pathway gets EXTREMELY hot.

Dario Depaula

Great place

Suvankar Roy

Good place to be with family to enjoy the beaches and also has another park on the side used for camping. The weather was great when we visited and needless to say we enjoyed the trip. Moreover parking is free for CT residents

Alexandra Velez

Lovely location but SO many flies we could hardly stand it. packed up our things and left within an hour of us arriving

M HS

Easy parking, go early to beat the crowd before 9am of possible.

Susan Conrod

Big campsites, well kept, part of beach reserved for campers, always a nice breeze off the water, clean restrooms. Place to wash dishes, clean showers. Busy weekends must reserve 11 months in advance. Places to launch kayaks and explore marshes. Dump station. This is mainly dry camping, generators allowed. But no during quiet timet ( 11-7) No dogs allowed at campsies or on beach

Chuck Watts

Great place to camp, go to the beach, bike or walk trails and fish all in the same location.

Andrew Lemoine

Great beach clean

thomas little

Clean,easy to get to

Glori’s World Is Bright

Awesome camping place and lovely beach to keep yourself cool over the summer. You can call to reserve a place to stay. You can have a tent, Pop up vehicle tent and even a big RV. You can purchase a barrel for fire wood $12 and 2 dollors every day. If you want to go real camping out style you can buy a hand held grill and over the fire cook your food. I love the outdoor experience. The staff are very kind. You have bathrooms and showers Just incase you dont have the water to do so. The more you want to live like if your at home the more its gonna cost. The more you want to live like a real camper with your tent and your own food to cook over your fire the least it will cost.

Melissa Datre

Chilly but nice today!

Robert Betteker

Very good family experience.

Jake

I love this beach....

jose Trinidad

Let me start with I haven't been to any beaches for 10long years and today I went my 5yr old son wonder off and in less then 15mins my son was found I love the fact that everyone there helped search the life guards all have my respect and special thanks ..... What I'm trying to say is that although this happened I will definitely be returning beach was nice and clean!!!

Amber Roscello

The majority of the beach is clean and beautiful except for one of the east beaches which is often overcrowded and tarnished by disrespectful people who leave there trash and don't clean up after themselves.

Anthony Siragusa

I've been to a lot of beaches in the Northeast and this one ranks pretty below average. It was in a convenient location to meet up with a friend one day (right off 2 large interstates) but that's about it. Very rocky and a little worn down. The food court was decent though. If you need a beach in CT get closer to the RI border.

Suzanne Huff

Even though almost every site was taken, everyone was respectful and quiet, especially during quiet hours. Close to the beach. Awesome hike and bike trails. Most restrooms were clean and plentiful and close by. There is a playground for the kids. Great state park.

Evan Soderstrom

I love Hammonasset because it’s a great place to come and spend time with family and friends. The beach is great. There is a playground for the kids and lots of places to go crabbing if that’s what you desire. Bike trails are available, and every couple nights there are movies at the outdoor theatre. I love Hammonasset and love my yearly visits.

Learn HowToDrive

To the see you next Tuesday (we'll call her "Karen") who didn't yield at the rotary today, almost crashed into the back of my vehicle, then followed me and held down the horn: you need serious help & to review a driver's ed book. When there's a ROTARY (you know, that big circle you drive around), you SLOW DOWN or even *gasp* STOP for someone who is ALREADY in the rotary. That "yield" sign isn't french for, "keep driving at full speed and run others off the road." Don't be a Karen, y'all. The beach is lovely.

RuthAnne Lansner

Hammonasset State Park is beautiful. There are actually 4 beaches there, West, Middle, East and Megus Point. They all have bathrooms/bath houses. West beach has a snack shack and some swings and picnic area. East beach has a covered pavilion and vending machines. Megus point has a nature center and snack shack. There are beautiful veiws of the marsh and nesting osprey. Middle beach is the only one without a lifeguard and there is no snack shack, but there are vending machines at the bath house. The park is free to CT residents. There is also a large campground there. Can't go wrong for a great day at the beach. Great for kids. And there is nice bike or walking path that runs from Megus point to west beach, about 3 miles one way.

VINAY DUDDILLA

I like this beach, you have a park to play games, have food and the sand on the beach is a bit rough. You can enjoy only if there is less crowd, with more crowd, you might not find peaceful sleep under sun, anyways good, not great.

Alison Gracy

Bathrooms are always clean, camp sites are always well kept, office staff is always polite and helpful.!!!

Helen Alvarez

Love the beach. It's been a few years since we have gone. The down side is the bathrooms are gross. They smell, floors dirty and no soap. They need to have someone maintain the restrooms.

Tom Plank

Nice beach, it was very clean. Bathrooms and showers need to be upgraded. Nice people. We enjoyed our stay.

Enes Y

You had better Go there at summer time

Divya P

Nice beach n good facilities. It has good walking trails n camping sites. It also has different parking locations with appropriate names so that you can plan to park based on what do you want visit like sun rise or sun set or just beach.

Benjamin DiNoia

ok the beach and park itself is nice enough, you can read the other reviews about it BUT I AM HERE TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE OYSTER SHELLS. yeah just be careful of where you step when you go in the water because if you step on one of the many oyster shells that are everywhere in Long island sound you gonna get a mad boo boo. Here's a picture of me with a nasty gash after stepping on a shell, I felt like I was out of Jaws it was a lot of blood so be mindful.

kat singh

Very good place to visit I suggest

Claribel Maysonet

Aaron Flaum

Great place to go with family

Erica Logan

Very nice views from this beach. Kept up very well and clean bathrooms.

Phoenix

This is a great place to get away with your family trust me you have a great time there and the food is amazing

Julie Vanty

Beautiful, quiet beach. However, BE CAUTIOUS OF THE FLIES! They bite your legs/ankles and were everywhere! Unfortunately, myself, along everyone else around us seemed to cut their beach day short because them. (Middle Beach)

Xiaochen Li

Need to pick the right section. Some are good.

Gina Kingsley

This is a beautiful park and beach in Connecticut on Long Island Sound. The beach is clean as are the rest rooms and pavilions. The life guards are professional and helpful when you have a question. There is a covered pavilion with tables and there's plenty of parking. Parking is free if you have a Connecticut license plate on your car.

Tony Boncore

Once again our camping trip to Hammonasett State Park, Madison CT was fabulous. This place is top shelf for families. The beach is clean and never over crowded. Wonderful staff on the park grounds and always willing to satisfy their customers. Enjoy your visit.

Tom Lefavour

Beautiful sunset here

Frank Frank

Nice beach, layed back, handicap accessible.

Matthew Hurley

Ton of large campsites with access to the beach.

IZZY

Excellent place for camping. Been going for over 20 years. Will love it. Over night camping. Prices are great. It is a state run facility.

P

Good size camping sites, clean bathrooms maintained regularly, affordable, short walk to the beach. The beach needs little more cleaning lots of sharp broken shells and debris in the sand.

James Hendel

One of the best places to see migratory water fowl, raptors and other birds. Great activities and lectures to participate in at the new Nature Center throughout every season. Get involved by joining The Friends of Hammonasset; great people doing great things for a greater purpose.

Ruth Gonza

I love this place

Barbara Dionne

It is amazing I took my grandchildren here and they love it.Im sure to come again

John Roy

Best state campground in Connecticut. We have been camping here twice a year for the past 20 years. The sites are large, the beach is close by and the park is clean and well kept despite the huge crowds at the nearby beach. The state has recently added a paved bike path that runs the length of the park. This wind path is a big improvement over riding the road out to Meigs Point.

RavenSunset

Gorgeous views, great camping, very beautiful and clean!

SUBHENDU MAJUMDER

Pretty fast beach and smoke car parking perfect summer /spring weekend gateway in Connecticut state.

Peter Lindsley

I visited here when I was a camper at Incarnation Camp in the early 1970s.

Dr. Giraffe

Great place to take your family. The new nature center looks really nice and is very kid/education center. The beaches are fine but the wetlands are incredible. Overall excellent facilities with great natural features to back it up.

Andrew LaRoche

Well maintained, great beach for swimming. Newly revamped walking trails. Many things to do for the entire family!

Marianne Alicea-Coombs

Awesome place!

Amanda Shin

Love going off season to walk and the kids ride there bikes

Lovely day to walk along the beach. New walking paths keep you off of the road and away from the traffic.

Grechar Loves Ali.

Wow my first time going yesterday. My daughter and I absolutely loved it. Better than what I expected.

William Torres Jr

Clean well manage state park!

Lisa DellaVecchia

Nice place nasty workers and rangers they do not have it together, as far as in they have no clue in their rules and regulations make it up as far they go

Karen Espinal

Our experience at hammonasset wasn't truly Fair because it was a holiday but overall taking the wait and far walk to a decent spot out of it because it was so full due to the holiday it wasn't the best experience. The sand was dirty even aside from the huge chunks of broken shell mixed in. It seemed almost like they mix dirt with sand 2 make the beach bigger lol The water felt sticky and was full of seaweed. We usually go to ocean Beach where the waves are calm just like it was at hammonasset. We wanted to try somewhere different. Don't think we'll return. It's the same distance and doesn't feel like the free parking was worth the experience.

Diane Baumer

They need to remove invasive vines from the trees in the camping areas. These vines will weaken and kill the trees. Then when a hurricane comes all the trees will come down. The new areas are very good will the rain gardens and native plants. The old areas need maintaining.

Adriana Laser

Amazing beach for New England with long beaches not very crowded even on Labor Day weekend. Lots of shells though so be prepared with shoes. Not much as far as current or waves. Snack stands and a nice bike path connecting all the beach entrances. Also the nature center is a cute stop for those with young kids. The camping itself had quiet hours which was definitely needed and very clean spacious bathrooms. They also have movie nights at the ampatheater, a playground, a camp store...And lots of paths for biking connecting all of the amenities.

Tammy Whalley

Our family like all the activities there was very friendly people. My Grandaughter loved the beach, playground and the movie. The site we're clean and enjoyable. Would we come again . Yes a site with electric next time.

Salvatore Magnano

Out of 586 campsites there are less than 20 sites for handicapped campers! That is like .03% availability for the handicapped! Other than that, Hamonasset Beach is a beautiful park on Long Island Sound that is a great getaway for an afternoon, a weekend, or for several weeks! Especially to beat the heat and humidity of a long hot Connecticut summer!

Gaawar Renewable Energy

Nice place to hang out with Family and friends. Great location for Picnic, BBQ and overnight Camping. Loved it.

BigJoe Fishing

Great beach, great camping with camp host activities, good fishing, clean and well kept park grounds.

Best State Park in all of NorthEast...

Justin Tacchi

This is a clean and beautiful beach park. Seasonal camping. Three beach locations. Middle beach has a sand bar that goes way out during low tide. Like all CT state parks everyone in a car with CT liscence plates gets in for free.

Rebecca Rudnick

Clean beach, nice bike trail.

Zyrz

Park appears well kept. Expensive if out of state.

gaurav kumar

Yaritza Figueroa

Great place to go with your family. When you go there you don't have to worry about your kids getting lost. Bathrooms are next to campsite.

Davidoff Lewis

Ae caught it on a beautiful summer day. Yes, it was unexpected, novel and we like the areas for families to spread out, panoramic views of the Long Island sound, long lawns pointing unobstructed to the water, an old mansion and beach ... I will post photos

Charles Wilson

Hammanasett is the best beach every year. It is relaxing and worth the ride. We encourage our children & friends to pack up and enjoy this wonderful piece of Ct.

Angela Caridad

Very nice beach. Bathroom could be a little more clean though

Chris W

Baned boogie boards

Justin Duran

Very well maintained and always beautiful. Can get crowded in the afternoons and the bathrooms are usually sub par, but not anything worse than you would expect from a public bathroom in a state park.

Karen Ryan

Always a good place for camping

Many places to walk and enjoy the beach and the wildlife. Great views of Long Island.

b B

Camped for a week great beach access and plenty for little ones to do ...camping was a bit crowded for my liking but everyone I encountered was very friendly and all and all it was a great time

Angelina Radionov

Beautiful beach, beautiful/ clean camping sites love the fact that there is a lot of grass! I have been camping near the beach with sandy sites and it's the worst.. my feet would always be dusty and no matter how hard I tried I would still end up bringing sand into my tent! Deff recommend this beach!

Sindi Mannochi

Beautiful State Beach for walking, swimming and camping. I take my dog for walks here during the off season (before Memorial Day and after Labor Day) There is an admission charge during the warmer weather.

Caylee Ramos

My hunny and my son absolutely loved this place, beautiful, clean and quiet. Lots to do all day! Restrooms easy to get to.

Shawn Antunes

Lots of parking, there is a place to eat there, not alot of seaweed, and the day I went there was plenty of room to lay out on the beach.

Brandon Malik Rashid

Concessions are located at East or West Beach

Kristen R

Great place for camping

Baz Trading

Beautiful park. The stat did a great job with the new pathway they put in. You can walk or bike all the way from the beginning of the park to the end without having to worry about cars. One of the nicest places in CT in my opinion.

Michael Fitzgerald

Best park in Connecticut by far..well maintained with camping and a huge 2 mile beach.. good fishing at both breakwaters.. meigs point being the best..just bring a cooler and a kite and injoy this 5 star..

Khraig Schupp

Not the best, but always clean.

Jaki Bee

Lovely, clean beach although the sand can have quite a bit of shells.
