What a delight! Beautiful trails with excellent pamphlet narratives to learn about the areas. We did encounter 3 bears along the way also. Did not expect to be so up close and personal. I wish that other tourist would leave them alone.

We've camped her a few times. Always enjoy ourselves. It gets pretty hot in the summer. There are active bears in the camp. This summer there are 2 Mama bears with 2 or 3 Cubs each, and 1 or 2 males. Depends who you talk to. Our neighbors got a ticket with the fine as high as $1,000. They left one tiny thing under a dish towel that attracted the bear which tore apart their site. Great visit center, great North Grove hike. Creek and river not far. Close to town of Arnold with a great grocery store. Bathroom and shower facilities are ok. Each one varies on how clean it is, as well as shower prices. But the showers all take quarters. They do get cleaned regularly though. In fact one of the bathrooms I went into smelled so strong of bleach my throat was on fire and eyes were burning just from being in their a minute. It is a beautiful place. You need to be comfortable with bears and vigilant about not having anything left out or in your car, always locked up in bear box unless you're prepping food.

This state park is just about 30 minutes past the town of Murphy's. Some of the largest trees in the world reside here. A very nice path running about a mile loops through the park to ensure you see some of the largest of the trees. You can have a very peaceful walk through this amazing setting and get back to town in just a couple of hours. It is $10 per car to enter.

Great State Park! They have a brand new visitors center fill of great history and displays. The trails themselves are great, self guided hikes through the groves of Giant Sequioas. Remember to leave your dogs at home if you plan on only hiking the designated trails. They are not allowed. However you can bring them on the forest service roads throughout.

Absolutely worth the 2-3 hour drive if you're in the Lake Tahoe, Sacramento, or San Francisco area. It's the northern most grove of sequoias in the US and is completely breathtaking if you've never seen giant sequoias before. There's two different groves of trees, the north and south, that both have walking trails.

If you need your nature fix this is a great place to do it. Several trails, some longer than others with most areas stroller friendly. My 2 year old enjoyed it. ***Plan accordingly and drive carefully... there’s lots of construction going on with flaggers and one way roads. (I’ve heard this about many roads in Yosemite as well.)*** I’d recommend stopping in Arnold at the big trees supermarket and getting a deli sandwich -way better than subway! or there’s also a large selection of jerky for a picnic. (Round table pizza is also next door.)

The road past the visitor's center was closed to vehicle traffic but open to hiking. Enjoyed a nice QUIET hike up the road. So peaceful without all the traffic. We only ran into three other hikers the whole day. It was wonderful.

So many great hikes for beginners and intermediate hikers. If you venture further in there are more hikes meant for people with experience. If you're new to hiking or just want to enjoy nature stay close to the visitor center, the overlook trail won't open with sweeping vistas bit offers great views of old growth trees.

Such a well-cared for park. The first lot for the visitor center can fill up but if you turn right instead of left there is another lot just a short way down. We did the north grove trail, which was a nice stroll and not a rigorous hike. One elderly lady could walk on the trail with her cane and her friends could push her in the wheelchair when needed. Great photo spots along the way. We walked the whole trail and returned to the visitor center in about an hour and a half.

When I was there only the North Grove was open, but it was nonetheless a wonderful time amongst these awe inspiring trees. The trees are less fenced off then I've seen in other groves, so you can get much closer to them. If you're there in snow (melting) season, bring suitable shoes as there will be snow or water to walk on/around. But as a nature lover that should be no problem. Pay attention to the evidence of men's destructive behavior in times past (the first and largest tree that was found was cut and turned into a dancefloor and bowling lane) and let us learn from this. Let's protect our Earth from those who seem to think she can rebound from all our activity.

One of my favorite places for camping and just to visit. I am always amazed by the giant sequoias. The north Grove trail is still as incredible as it was when I was young. It's the south Grove trail that has the biggest trees, though. The approximately 5 mile hike is difficult but if you take water and have well fitting hiking shoes it's worth hiking. The river was too full and swift to swim in but beautiful to watch. This is a "bucket list" place everyone should experience.

We really enjoy our hike here. Its an easy hike under the giant trees. The staff are friendly and helpful. They have small visitor center. Parking was good but it was weekday. Not sure on weekends. Its amazing to view these giant trees. Its worth every penny we spent for our California vacation.

Amazing place with the largest living things on the planet. Easy access trail around two different loops of the forest. The 50 cent brochure explains 26 different spots and takes you through a small portion of history in the groves. Clean facilities, helpful staff and even an inexpensive snack shop at the end of the trail. Well worth the $10 park fee.

We couldn't make it to Sequoia national park , this one was closer to the northeast California area and didn't disappoint. The trees are humongous and the park has some nice walking trails that lead you to all of the sites of interest.

Saw a mother bear and her cubs walk up behind our cars. Great place to get closer to nature. $10 for the day. Its clean and beautiful. There is a bbqing place along with clean bathrooms. Staff are friendly and the placr is safe for kids.

This is one the best suitable weekend picnic spot for children. This place have different appearances at different seasons. Of course, big trees (very big) worth taking a look at giant sequoias as memory for a life time.

This park is aptly named: it has big trees. And large trees. There's some extra-large trees too. And with a little work you can even visit the humongous trees! The "small" trees here would be large trees in most locations. The North Grove trail is an easy walk and lets you see some extra-large trees. Get the interpretive guide at the visitor center though as it will let you know what those numbered signposts mean. To see the humongous trees, you need to hike the south grove trail and take the side spur to see the Agassiz Tree. This is much more of a real hike: you'll want real shoes (preferably hiking boots) not flip-flops. Also, pack water and possibly even a snack or two. It took us 4 hours with many stops to oh and ah over things and to take pictures.

ONE little thing though quiet time is at 10 and my family and a bunch of others really thought this sucked!! Park is beautiful, we camped at the North Camp Ground, hiked the North Grove trail, went to Stanislaus river and Beaver Creek. All very nice. But there is a lot of mosquito and the restroom ran out of toilet paper both days when we were there. Each camp site has its own water faucet, which is very convenient. The showers are coin operated, 25 cents per minute. To get here, you need to drive through some twisty mountain road.

Beautiful hike and plenty of ancient trees to admire. If you go to the visitor center there is a very kind man who will talk you about anything in the park. There's not a good source of food at the park so be sure to buy some before you go. There is a place to fill up your water bottle and there are several bathrooms at the visitor center.

I grew up coming here as a kid. Decided last year to take a tour around the area after visiting Lake Tahoe. Honestly it was so much fun, I was perhaps a bit biased, but my wife enjoyed it tremendously. If you are in the area you should visit. The area has lots of trails of all kinds of difficulty, the main area is wheelchair accessible. However the secondary Grove, which is less visited and very much worth visiting, takes some actual hiking/walking to get to. Overall, in my opinion, a must see.

This is a MUST visit if you're in the East Bay. Its a drive but the history of the trees, the valley and the surrounding towns is amazing. See some of the largest and oldest trees on Earth, some estimates at 3000 years old. Visitor center welcoming and camping in the forest is amazing. Clean and welcoming with a fair, level approx 2 mile self guided tour.

A magnificent grove of giant Sequoia just 3 hours from the bay area! The North Grove hike is flat enough for a wheelchair (though there are dirt sections). We also did the Lava Beds trail which is completely different, and had almost no one on the trail. We camped at the North Grove campground: the sites were big, people were friendly and the bathrooms were clean. It was a great weekend!

A wonderful place to see and enjoy nature. Sanely the Pioneer Cabin tree has fallen over, but the nature walk is still 100% worth it. There is so much to see here. It’s really fun to follow the map and learn about the history of how this place was discovered and began. I’d highly recommend visiting. Bring a picnic!

Calaveras Big Trees State Park is such a wonderful place. Our family comes here several times a year to walk among these really big trees. There is a very nice visitor center and gift shop with lots of exciting activities for us and the kids, year round. A very informative North Grove trail takes you on and around and sometimes through the trees themselves. The size of some of these trees is pretty mind blowing. For much more amazingly larger trees and spectacular views, continue past the North Grove and head to the South Grove. The trees here are so big you can build a house inside of them! There are many trails of varying difficulty . There is so much to do here that we still have not seen everything. Great camping g at the North Grove with showers, and some awsome environmental camping spots at the South Grove are the best. See you out there!

Absolutely stunning an beautiful views. We were given the recommendation to do the south grove when we stopped for gas. It did not disappoint. The first mile to mile and a quarter there's not much to see. Once you get to the fork you will start to see the redwoods. If you're looking for an easier route go to the left, less dramatic incline and circle around the right. Would love to come again.

Yet another one of California's beautiful big tree groves and aw inspiring parks. Plenty of giant redwoods here. Also, a wonderful visitors center with historical information about this particular site. A wonderful place for a date, or to bring the family. There is also some nice day hiking trails and a beautiful creek that runs through. We say many birds, Squirrels, chipmunks.

The giant trees are magnificent, the park is a great place to visit and hike for everyone. I love camping there. However, the bears are very hungry this year because of the late winter and they have been raiding the campsites for food. If you camp there KEEP YOUR FOOD LOCKED UP SECURELY!!

Absolutely Amazing. There are a couple different trails. South Grove: the less maintained longer exploration trail is closed for the winter. (Something to keep in mind) But there also is Norrh Grove Trail (1.6 miles). This trail has compacted trails for easier walking. It is full of beautiful views of the majestic Sequoia Trees. The only down side is the iconic walk through tree you see in photos is no longer standing. Nonetheless, this site is absolutely worth visiting.

One of my favorite state parks in northern CA! It’s quite small if you visit during the winter, as only one grove is open to exploration. But still beautiful, if not more, when you walk underneath snow dusted sequoias. Rangers and staff are always so so friendly, they even give out free hot drinks in the warming hut with a huge fire! It’s a charming and great place. Parking fills up fast since it’s small, recommend getting here before 11 or even 10 am. The park is dog friendly only on fire roads, picnic areas, and paved roads!

Most spots are spacious with awesome views. Campground spots 1-24ish are all right up alongside the highway into the park so lots of road noise takes the magic out of camping. Beautiful visitors center and lots of great paths. If you want to get to water it takes about a 20 minute drive and during June the water was too high and fast to actually get in. The big redwoods are obviously a sight to be seen. Lots of pros to this campground but a couple negatives as well. Running water, toilets and showers here as well.

This park is wonderful!!! Great to guides, wonderful and friendly staff, beautiful paths. At least one of the paths is even ADA accessible. When we were doing the short loop today there was a man in a wheelchair enjoying it without issue, as well as multiple families with strollers. The Sequoia trees are absolutely magnificent and just completely breath-taking!!! Nice weather in August, around 80s, but do bring sunscreen and a hat. Especially if you're doing a longer trail. 100% recommend visiting here! Parking fee was $10 per car

A great little park that we stopped at on our way back from Tahoe. The park staff were very informative and gave great suggestions on a few day hikes we could take. We did the north loop (I believe) that was about 1.5 miles. This gave us the opportunity to see a ton of big trees and learn more about the area. They warned us about bears, but we never saw one and were fine the entire time.

Calaveras Big Trees: off the hook every time. Some summer weekends, they have the warming hut open for ice cream, lemonade, and snacks. Went to the South Grove area for the first time and hung a left to check out the Bradley Grove. It was beautiful but note that the trail doesn't reconnect with the South Grove trail and there aren't any giant seqouias on this trail. Some other amazing flora is present!

Went when there was 4ft. of snow. Warming cabin was amazing. Hot cocoa, apple cider and coffee. The docents were very helpful and the scenery amazing. Dog friendly park (on trails)

It's an absolutely beautiful place. I've been a few times and I personally think it's better in mid-spring, when there's still a good amount of snow on the ground, but still not too cold. The snow creates a nice visual contrast. Now, admitidly I've only ever been to the North Grove, and all the hikes there are literally a walk in the park. Very flat, not very long, which is great for allowing you just chill and really take in the scenery as you walk. There's a nice little visitor center there too with some cool stuff, but don't spend toooo long in there. A, you'll probably convince yourself into buying something, and B, you're there to see the trees, so go see the trees!!!

We did both the north grove and the south grove trails and while both were amazing, we enjoyed the north grove trail more. I think there were more trees to be amazed by and the trail was way easier and shorter. I have never been so amazed by trees.

This is such a gorgeous place. So peacefully graced by the mountains and weather. This is definitely a good place I will come back to visit. Even if the rooms in Murphy Inn were really over priced and get this no continental breakfast so this is truely a tight knit community your forced to eat out.

Absolutely amazing! This is my second time here. Go in the morning if you can. The morning sunlight breaking through the trees is breathtaking. The visitor center does not open until 10:00a but the trails open earlier. We arrived at about 8:45a and we felt like we were the only people in park! We were able to enjoy it all and take as many pictures as we wanted without feeling rushed or crowded. It was perfect!

The park is large with plenty of space to get into nature. The giant sequoias in the south grove are absolutely worth a visit on their own, as there are few things of that scale that can be found anywhere on earth. Beyond that though the park is rich with a great variety of landscapes, plants, and animals that are exciting to see.

This place is a treasure! We wanted to see the “big Sequoias” and we were not disappointed. We weren’t prepared for a long hike so we took the shorter trail but still were able to see beautiful sights. Pictures can’t even begin to show reality.

Awe inspiring, having grew up in England and visited sherwood forrest on several occasions to see the giant oak ( Robin hood legend) this was magical. Loved it, at 33 years old ill be back.

The Cichlid Nut - Tim Howard

$10 day use fee per car load, sad but true. The North Grove Trail is the signature feature at 1.6 miles and little elevation change, it’s pretty flat. I saw people in flips doing it... :-/ the trail has 23 or so pre recorded stops if you download the App to listen to the narration. The hike is easy moderate with a very low grade chance. Not appropriate for strollers or little children under 3-4 imo. Many photo worthy spots along the way, a few hollowed our trees kids when walk right through, or climb on, pretty cool. The facility grounds are very well maintained. all in all, better than say Muir Woods or even General Sherman Trail.
