REVIEWS OF Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park IN Arkansas

Jeremy Rhodes

Wow! It has been years, when I was a kid, since I have been here. But this place is great. What little impression I had when I was a kid was blown out of the water by what we experienced today, we took the family of four, which included a five and a three-year-old out and we had a great time! We did half of the longer Trail before we had to get back to the visitor center to take the tram ride. The trail is nice, but where your Sun tan lotion and bug spray. The tram ride was a fun experience and the breeze from it was welcomed. Park interpreter Amy was amazing, great with the kids and very personable. Can't wait to get out here for a equinox or solstice program.

Kris Huckaba

Awesome experience, learned a lot thanks to the wonderful park interpreters.

It was a wonderful experience to go an see the mounds. They have a 10 minute movie to watch that explains about the mounds an history of the area. The museum had lot of information on how Indians made tools an cured animal skins an the use of them. Very clean...very friendly staff. It's totally free. Small park, but great facilities. There is a short 3/4 mile, paved trail around the park that includes a scenic walk over parts of the lake. Along the way signs and the booklet they give you talk about the different parts of the park. Inside the main entrance is a small museum. All in all, my family had a very pleasant visit and were fascinated to see artifacts and learn about the people that occupied this area 1000 years ago.

John Stevens

Kind staff. Some of the paths are paved and easily wheel chair/stroller accessible. The rest are dirt paths that could also be if you have good tires. Cool morning walk just a little ways outside Little Rock

Very educational about our heritage. Take the kids out there and have fun. Easy to find take Hwy 165 south out of North Little Rock Ar. towards England Ar. Have fun and be safe this summer and learn something.

It was a ok place. Went on a school field trip with our son but the weather made us leave early it's really cheap though. We did get to walk around the mounds and see much.

David Tanner

It's a bit hilly but other than that quite beautiful and the people who work there are quite knowledgeable about their subjects

Rebecca Schramm

Very low key. The visitors center is aimed at kids, but the mounds themselves are really cool. For what it is, it was very interesting.

This is a mysterious place. Peaceful, beautiful grasslands, prairies, and wetlands. Bring the mosquito spray if its warm out. The mounds are amazing! Entry is free, souvenirs are priced affordably the bathrooms are spotless. Please donate what you can to keep places like these running and clean.

Emily Bures

I love this park. Great for exercise with breath taking scenery. There are bald eagles on the lake as well.

Ann W

I took my children to see the mounds. We arrived too late to go out on the trail, so we shopped at the store. It has a lot of affordable items. We were also able to see the museum inside. What a beautiful place, and narrated as well! No charge for that. I will definitely be returning there!

Dannielle Krisell

Bonnie Kubacka

We had a quiet and relaxing walk through the mounds. We fed a few turtles on the Arkansas River and there was no cost associated with any of the tours, museum or videos.

Brian Golden

Nice education and visitor center with a short movie and various displays. Two easy hikes available, one that is paved throughout. Dont miss the boardwalk behind the larger mound.

Amber Vaughn

Very interesting and informative

Brian Taylor

I visited this place as a teenager and enjoyed it a lot. So I took my grandkids out there on spring break for something to do for a day. The kidos liked it more than I thought they would. It didn't cost a penny and was pretty cool for a few dirt hills in the middle of a field.

Charles Todd

Boring, no guided tour or events to draw interest. Good exercise if you just want to walk the trails around a open field and read a few signs with information on them. Staff was friendly, but its just not enough to do or see.

S. Jason Bransford

Awesome history! Great hike and info as you go. Great addition to Poverty Point!

kenny diffy

Neat place & historically interesting. Friendly staff but after calling days ahead to confirm and being reassured they could accommodate our potentially large group they were largely unprepared even though we brought less than half our anticipated group.

Steven King

Went on a field trip and the kids had an awesome time. Emily was a fantastic guide!!!

Very beautiful park, I recommend the shorter trail, absolutley beautiful bridges and lake.

Great experience

John Donna

Interesting exhibits in (free) visitor center, big picnic/bbq area. Nice paved and/or grass paths with easy access. (Dogs allowed, on leash.) Huge grounds, so even if there's a school field trip it won't be overcrowded - there's even a separate Education Center building. Good & relevant gift shop. Allow time for the nearby Plantation Agriculture Museum, they have much more than you'd think.

dewayne bennett

Lovely park and very informative staff

Had a great time.

Bradley Atkins

I visited as part of a BSA Archeology trip. The park guides were very helpful and informational. The mounds were a sight to behold, only able to be appreciated from up close.

Jessica Grgurich

We enjoyed our visit here. Super peaceful reflection on our history and lots of information in the museum. Easy walking path around the mounds and along the pond. We stayed on the paved path though could probably easily have done the other longer path with the stroller. Really neat FREE experience!

Dave Jackson

Well preserved and well interpreted archeological site. They can accommodate small and large groups, have a nice gift shop and have professionally made exhibits.

Mark Brown

Easy access, lots of displays and uninterrupted native grounds. Looks as if the original peoples just broke camp and left. The state parks wisely left the interpretation of what went on here up to the visitor. They share archaeology methods and findings but force no "vision" on visitors. Great little park

Interesting place to visit. Nice visitor center.

Very interesting for children. Nice preservation of culture.

Lois Jordan

My first time there

Jac Duc

The overall experience was pretty good. There were 2 trails to choose from, one was a bit longer than the other. And both trails had little guide books to help you understand the history of the Plum Bayou people. The scenery was very nice and the view by the lake was very beautiful. The only problem I had when visiting was the concrete path I took. I choose the Knappe trail, the 3/4 mile trail, and on the path was what seemed like duck poop all over. I couldn't look up very often because of the poop. But other than that it was a really good experience.

Good natural science collection. Friendly and knowledgeable ranger.

Justin Bearden

Tour guide was amazing one of the best parks in the state

Michael Smith

If you like to learn about Native American history in Arkansas this has some interesting things to see. There are only a few remaining mounds as previous farmers flattening the others for agriculture. It's a bit disappointing that there is so little known about the inhabitants or what tribe called this place home. The state has done a nice job trying to figure out who they were through excavation and historical maps. It has a nice paved walking trail that is 0.8 miles and a rustic trail that is just short of 2 miles. The trails have numbered markers and a booklet with information to read as you go. The trails pass around the plazas and there is a nice boardwalk to the oxbow lake with many Bald Cypress trees that border the site. It's free to tour the museum and self guided tour. They offer guided tours a few days a week for a fee. The staff was friendly and helpful, the facilities were clean and maintained. I'm surprised I didn't visit the site before and I plan on returning soon. Nothing flashy or digital but it's nice to take in nature and try to imagine the life these people led.

Lovely park with great history about the Native Americans of Arkansas. Short drive from Little Rock. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The 10min film provides a good background of how the site was used.

An interesting g stop if you are in the area.

As usual in Arkansas and most other states state parks are one of the greatest values around... In the state of Arkansas all state parks are free and the Toltec Mounds is no exception but it is an exceptional Place prehistoric and I mean prehistoric tens of thousands of years ago Indians lived here built large Mounds on this incredibly fertile Plains on the Delta live near the Arkansas River and were able to harvest a great livelihood and sustain themselves for Millennia... Although little is known about the people the state of Arkansas has spent a great deal of time and energy trying to must have been exceptional use of our tax dollars

Carol Swboni

The native garden is fantastic. The walk around the Mounds area is flat, so walking is easy. Lots to learn!
