REVIEWS OF Sitka National Historical Park IN Alaska

Place is well kept. Clear explanation of each totem pole and it's purpose. A bit busy with a ship in town, but ... Visitors center very good. Local artists willing to explain their work. Read up on button blankets and carving. You'll get more out of what you see.

Peter

They have wonderful exhibits. The information and examples of totem poles are most impressive. The film depicts the Tlingit, Russians and US. Even the small Tlingit exhibition is worth viewing.

Wendell Nealon

A must see when in port. About a 20 minute walk from the port. We walked leisurely and enjoyed the sights. The park is filled with totems along a wide walking path. Inside the museum we were suprised to fins a wonderful lady sharing her experience in beading. What a great day in Sitka.

Matt McNutt

Very cool place! We were lucky in choosing the right tour which included this stop, but to be fair our guide really made it come alive. However, the abundance of plant and forest was mind blowing. The trails were in fantastic shape. Easy to walk. Wide enough to accommodate at least 4 adults shoulder to shoulder. Several benches placed frequently throughout the trails we were on which helped those of us who needed a break every so often. The totems were in good shape as well which gave us gawkers even more to appreciate.

Larry Smith

Highly recommend stop. Walk right up to waterfall.

Fronty Parker

Wonderful place! Early morning is the best time to come for sure, but anytime is good when the salmon are running in the river (the later half of the summer, for the most part). Most of the trail is even terrain, but may not be wheelchair accessible.

Sitka became our final destination for our tour of Alaska and it was a great way to end to trip. Sitka had little in comparison to the likes of Juneau and Skagway previously visited where these two towns seemed largely dependent upon tourists, Sitka did not. We were only in town for a few hours but moving at pace enabled us to see some great highlights of Sitka. Starting out around the harbour we instantly got a feel for the place talking to a local fisherman catching salmon adjacent to the salmon spawning ground next door. This was an incredible sight watching thousands of salmon after spawning at the end of their life cycle preparing to die. A bald eagle even flew very close to us whilst at the harbour which was a spectacular sight. Moving on we next went to the National Historical Park which had some great walks through through the woodlands. The woodland is home to numerous totem poles recovered from over the years and relocated for safe keeping here. What a great sight each one was and the stories attached to them. Continuing through the woods we were surrounded by the sea and the Indian river, the river like the harbour was full of salmon that had just spawned. Our timing was perfect as all other times of the year we wouldn’t have experienced this wonder of nature. This area also marks some of Sitka’s colourful history during the years of the Russian invasion and their habitation of the town. Moving out of the National Park and across town we went to see the Russian cemetery that again acknowledges the towns past. There is even a Russian Princess laid to rest in here. Generally within the town there are some lovely buildings and residential homes with a good range of shops for visitors to peruse. All in all a pretty and authentic Alaskan town that is well worth the trip. We

Cindy Ritacco

Pretty park. The only thing worth doing in Sitka. A very disappointing stop on our cruise.

Frances M

Really a unique and beautiful place. Unfortunately, I visited the city while on a cruise so I didn't get to spend as much time looking around as I'd have liked. I hope to go back one day and have an opportunity to explore it more.

Tony Edwards

Great place for walking through the woods in the trails

D C

Beautiful and relaxing especially when weather is mild and sunny. There is also Sitka Sound Science (salmon hatchery/aquarium) near by. $7 adult admission with tour. Small but fun. In the starfish pool, you get to see and touch the starfish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, sea snails, and other marine creatures. We saw one small eel, too.

Joel Andrew

Unbelievably beautiful trail

angel montoya

Great place , even better people .

shawnverizon Verizon

Very clean and of significant historical value!

Julian Brigden

Really nice trail and some cool exhibits

Jamie Dargusch

Easy trails to walk and see the replicated totem poles. There is an 800 # you can dial to get information about each pole, otherwise there are very few markers to explain their significance. You can play a guide to explain, or do yourself with that phone number that is listed in a plaque at the start of the trail. Beautiful scenery, as is most all of Alaska! Enjoy.

Linda Coleman

Beautiful trees and forest. Salmon filled river. Loved seeing all the nature.

Scotwebs

A beautiful place...

IgorIgorson

Anand Prasad Kruttiventi

Very, very nice place to visit, with an easy walking trail lined with totems. The park is adjacent to the harbor. We had a special bonus - a fishing boat was off loading fish scraps and there were more than 25 bald eagles flying around trying to get their share of the scraps.

Wonderful people and a wealth of knowledge.

Remarkable collection of Native Totem Poles, in a 125 acre park along the seashore. A walk back in time. Stunning indoor museum collection and local artists working on beading, silver carving, weaving and totem carving. Ten minute walk from town along a harbor and past a unique marine science center.

Sitka National Historical Park is a national historical park in Sitka in the U.S. state of Alaska. It was redesignated as a national historical park from its previous status as national monument on October 18, 1972. The park in its various forms has sought to commemorate the Tlingit and Russian experiences in Alaska.

Patrick Chinnery

Great trails, easy to moderate. Very shady of course. Saw eagles and ravens and many totems.

Steve Johnson

A historic place in Alaska containing the battle site between the kiksadi tlingits and the mercenaries of the Russian American company. Featuring artifacts in the visitor center and totems in the park. The first stretch of walkway is called lovers lane

J. P. Formento

Great walk through the forest to see totems. On the way you will see more bald eagles than is believable. At least for a guy who has never seen one in the wild before

Cameron R

I came here on my first day in Sitka. It's a light walk and has amazing views. The totem polls are amazing, some are clearly better than others and they make you wonder about the time it took the artists to make them. The trails are family friendly but keep a close eye on kids and dogs.
