Tent camped here 5 days 4 nights mid-July. Never got tired of looking at bears and salmon. Something new every day. Mornings and evenings were awesome, as all the day trippers were gone! No wait for the falls platform during those times. Lake/bridge platform was just as awesome as the falls platform, since babies hang out there with moms. Tent campground was wonderful and affordable (book permits well in advance - the day they go on sale). Water is potable, but I wish I had brought my water filter as it did not taste the best. Rangers are wonderful to talk to - they really know the bears. Food at the lodge was pricey but good, and a nice break from eating freeze dried camp food. Coffee quality varied, but I can't complain cause bears! This park was the highlight of our 2 week vacation. Highly recommend staying a few days rather than a day trip.

There is absolutely no way anyone could not have a good time here. If you are a nature and animal lover this is the place for you. Bears are abundant as well as other wildlife. Staff is super friendly . Awesome place. I hope to return again someday.

Katmai National Park was mind-blowing awesome. It is very remote and difficult to get to, very expensive as well given the access issues but the view of the salmons swimming upstream on Brooke's Falls and the bears trying to eat them is a treat for the eyes. We saw about 15 bears in that half day visit of which 11 we saw safely while watching from the platform built for visitors on the falls while the other 5 (a mother with 3 Cubs and then a lone bear) we ran into in the wild on our way through the jungle on the trail from the visitor center to the falls. Experience of a lifetime!!

This is one of my favorite National Parks. The flight in was exciting. But watching fifteen brown bears at the falls fishing all at the same time was absolutely mind blowing. A great spectacle that we hope to repeat in a few years. The people on staff were great and most of the visitors were fun to talk to.

Spent 3 days visiting Brooks Camp in Katmai in early July 2016. This is a very organized operation that ensures everyone has a fun safe experience. There were plenty of bears to be seen and the weather was perfect. Also the lunch at the lodge was great! If you love viewing brown bears you'll love this location.

We took a float plane to Brooks Camp at Katmai National Park and Preserve and had a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We saw a mama bear with 3 cubs before we even left the building that you watch the educational video and get some training from rangers. Once we got to the viewing platforms, it was amazing and an unforgettable experience. It’s not cheap to get there, but this is you stereotypical Alaskan “bears catching salmon” scene that’s everyone sees. We were lucky to go at the right time since the bears aren’t always as plentiful, but what a neat experience getting to get that close to these majestic creatures and not fearing for your life. These bears are used to humans and focused on fish, but the rangers do an excellent job ensuring everyone’s safety. Highly recommended!

From the float plane ride in to the flight out you won't be able to get enough. Beautiful trails and scenery with bears everywhere. Watching them during the salmon run is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Be prepared to take a bear etiquette class before you are allowed in, and you are on a time limit watching the bears so every guest has an opportunity. Most of the visitors are amicable to this (as they should be) but we did run into one or two smug photographers who I wouldn't mind never meeting again. Overall, though, amazing experience.

Amazing, but one of the hardest national Parks to access. We took a boat across Naknek Lake which was a rough slow scary ride. First week of August saw lots of sockeye and therefore lots of brown bears. Fished from the Brooks Falls down to Brooks Lake and had bears around us the entire time. Two fly-ins later in the week to the far reaches of the park were even more remote and better fishing. But also many more bears. On the Moraine River we had 15 bears around us all day.

(Translated by Google) We were two days in June on site. The weather has been pleasant. The park, we were in the Brooks Lodge, was not crowded by crowds. You could relax and enjoy the nature and silence, of course, also observe the bears in sufficient numbers in your familiar surroundings. Pure nature. Unfortunately, the arrival and overnight at the lodge (simple equipment) is not for a small budget. (Original) Wir waren zwei Tage im Juni vor Ort. Das Wetter ist angenehm gewesen. Der Park, wir waren in der Brooks Lodge, war nicht von Besuchermassen überfüllt. Amazing. The zoo has nothing on this place where you can see bears in their natural environment, fishing to their hearts content. You can get super close to bears and they don't mind people- they are there for the fish. I would recommend this place to almost anyone. There is a 1 mile hike in and you should be in walking health. Staff are very friendly and helpful. If you want to know if it is worth it look at the bear cam on their website during the salmon run

Due to an ever increasing amount of day trippers present at the park in the area surrounding Brooks Lodge, the viewing platforms can become quite crowded and uncomfortable to use. However, the wildlife and scenery more than make up for it, and make it a worthwhile place to visit.

Katmai is a breathtaking place. The bears are truly every where and the lakes and rivers make for gorgeous views. There aren't a ton of established trails but the ones they have are very enjoyable. I really recommend hiking to the summit of Dumpling Mountain if it's a clear day. The trail is long and steep in some places but the view is worth it. Brooks camp turned out to be a great place to camp and the near by lodges were nice if you wanted a small break from outdoor life. At the lodge they had showers, flushing toilets, a small store and daily buffets all available to buy. The actual campground offered a gear/ food cache, pit toilets and cold potable water. It's steps from the beach and has semi-private spots. I'd honestly love to go again and check out more of Backcountry. We went the first week of August and the weather was perfect everyday. The salmon run was technically over but there were still plenty of bears and plenty of salmon in the river but a lot less people.

James Beltran

I loved our national parks and Katmai really stands out. To visit we took a seaplane from Anchorage as there are no roads to Katmai. This makes it one of the wildest national park in our system, but makes the view of seeing the bears catch fish all more impactful.

(Translated by Google) We want to see coastal brown bears but where, on Kodiak or in the Katmai National Park? We choose Katmai, where Disney made a 2013 film about these brown bears. They will probably know why they have chosen this wonderful national park, we think. The adventure, hopefully it's going to be good, starts the next morning at 7:00 am, with its 40 year old Cessna, John from Homer flies over to Katmai. John has been flying through Alaska for 25 years and is a master of his trade and so we end up on the beach right in front of Hello Bay Camp, how could it be otherwise. This place is amazing. Bears, bears, everywhere! The Park Rangers do an incredible job educating everyone that passes through on safety and keeping a very close watch to ensure all the rules are followed. They're always happy to answer questions about the bears, from educating about the species & how they live to identifying the bears that are around. There is also plenty of other wildlife to enjoy, especially birds. If possible, I would suggest camping instead of going on a daytrip. The platforms feel like a ghost time during the mornings and evenings, and there were multiple points where I was able to sit down, stretch my legs out, and just enjoy a little quiet time with the bears. No place on Katmai is safe, but the campground is comfortable and the electric wire fence that encourages the bears to keep out is well constructed. With all this said, please do not go here if you are not prepared to respect the rules. This is not a zoo and while these bears are habituated to humans, they are wild. At times it was discouraging to see Rangers having to shout at guests who seemed to be intentionally ignoring their instructions. This is one of the most magical places on the planet that anyone could ever hope to visit and hopefully we can keep it that way & not mess it up for the next generation.
