Fun little cave. Great tour, reasonable price. It's a bit taxing physically but it's worth it. I recommend it.
Explore Cathedral Gorge State Park in a long, narrow valley in Nevada. Explore the scenic canyons on foot and admire cave-like rock formations and cathedral spires. The Civilian Conservation Corps Water Tower is also a popular destination. Built in 1934, it is a water tower built of stone and concrete that was used during the construction of the park. Take advantage of the many hiking trails, campsites and picnic spots scattered throughout the park.
Great adventure every time I go. It is beautiful inside. Be sure to bring a light jacket. It is always colder in the cave
Such a beautiful an amazing experience, the cave was much more then my wife an I expected. I will definitely be going back. The tour guide was really nice
A great cavran to experience. The views are gorgeous. Do not pass this up!
Lots of formation Good Tour knowledgeable guides I have been to a lot of gays definitely one of the top
What an interesting cavern. Our guide was very informative. I learned so much.
If you wanna go caving this is a great place .
It's an amazing experience, and not too expensive!
It's nice and cool inside and has about a hour long tour. Bring a jacket!
Awesome! Biggest cavern I’ve seen
Loved it. I went with a school field trip so I don't know what the normal tour is like. We had a nice guided tour that was about a 3/4 mile hike in and out. The path is poured concrete so it is easily traversed.
Beautiful place! One of the best caverns in the southeast! Walkways are paved throughout and handrails where you need them. Be prepared for a 3/4 mile trip each way. They only offer guided tours and the guides (Milton in particular) are very knowledgeable about their cavern. There are so many features to see, you will notice even more on the way out. Take time to walk through the gift shop, and a trail or two while you're there.
Cool to see. Bring a light jacket and a stroller if you have a little one not fond of walking.
Very nice cave tour
Tour was about an hr long. Was an awesome tour. Kinda pricey but worth going. Cold inside so be prepared lol
One of the coolest things I have ever seen. The tour guide was awesome. Milton was very informative. I will go back.
Great tour. Nick rocks!! Much bigger cave than I imagined. A must see, especially with kids!
This was a great family outing! We had a fantastic time and would definitely go back!
We went there today. Had a great time. The cave is a great place to spend a hot summer day. Even walked a little hiking trail they had....was not long enough to hold the kids attention while you are waiting for your tour. Nice outdoor sitting area.
Perfect afternoon trip for the family. Super friendly employees. We have 3 kids ages one, two, and eight that all enjoyed it. The 8 year old says he can't wait to go back. It was pretty amazing to see even the younger ones pointing and saying ooh at the different formations. I would suggest bringing something to entertain little ones while you wait for your tour, or maybe just plan your timing better than we did.
The caverns are beautiful!
Guides make a difference. Been multiple times with a different guide and the stories and points of interest are different for each one. For some it's the bats and shark teeth. Others love to tale how the cave was discovered and upgraded. Good long walk in the cave for exercise. Don't trust Rooster and the golf cart. He scary. Lol.
A wonderful tour guide named "Red Beard" showed our group around. He did a wonderful job doing so. The facility was clean and the staff was well mannered. A fine place for all ages. They even offer golfcart tours for those who dont feel comfortable walking the 0.75 mi trail through the cave.
Easy access, great formations.
The caves are breath taking. The tour was also amazing as was our guide, Leela. She was super nice and funny. Had an amazing time.
Dont go on second Tuesday. No late tours
I’ve been to this cave since I was a child and I come back time after time! My favorite Cave! I’m 58 years old and bring my grandkids now!
Cathedral Caverns State Park is located near Grant Alabama. It used to be called Bat Cave back in the 1950s but opened to the public for guided tours only a few years ago. The main attraction at Cathedral Caverns is the cave tour. The tours run at scheduled times so when you show up go into the office/gift shop to purchase tickets for the tour. The cave entrance is said to be the largest natural cave entrance in the world. It’s about 25 tall and 128 feet across. When you first walk into the cave entrance, it’s a huge space and little do you realize that it goes on to tunnel another two miles though during the tour visitors can only traverse a little over a half mile into the cave. I’ve visited the cave twice. On both occasions I visited during the summer. So while it was about 90° outside the minute you get into the cave the temperature drops. If you visit I would recommend bringing a light sweater since you’ll be in the cave for a while and it’s cold. Another thing is wear a sturdy pair of walking shoes or even hiking boots. The reason for that is because the cave floors are wet and it’s slippery in some areas. The tour guides that we had on both visits were very knowledgeable about the geology and history of the cave. They made the cave tour educational, fun and interesting. A neat thing that they do when you get to the back of the cave as far in as they let you go is that they turn the lights off in the cave. They actually have some lighting in the cave so that you can see where you’re walking but when you get to the back of the cave they shut the lights off so you get to experience total darkness. It’s a unique thing one can only do in a cave a half a mile underground. The ticket prices for tours were $20 a person for adults, which is reasonable for the experience. In my opinion the cave tour is best for adults and kids 8+ years.
Great cave tour. Reasonable cost.
Unique experience, great for children and exploration. Short drive out of Guntersville, Al.
We did gem panning and walked around a bit. Great park for both!
Beautiful place and very fun time here.
Great tour..... fabulous formations....much better than other caverns I have toured
Great experience, knowledgeable staff. Carry a bottle of water with you as its a 3/4 mile walk into the cavern. Very cool way to spend a saturday.
The cave is massive and holds four Guinness world records. The first being the large natural entrance which you will quickly become acquainted with. It is a short but informative walk through the cave and our guide was fantastic, adding a touch of humor to the story. It is cold if you come during the winter, as we did. However, the inside of the cave is a smooth 60 degrees so you will warm up shortly if you came unprepared :).
Well paved walking tour. Our tour guide Randall is extremely knowledgeable and has a great presentation. The cave is incredible. Onr of the largest caves around with some beautiful structures.
Highly recommend visiting this place...even if you have to go out of your way. You can walk up to 3/4 of a mile into the cave. The walkway is a very smooth surface with several elevation changes. If you need assistance with walking you can use you electric scooter. HUGH Cavern! Phone service and GPS is a little scetchy...but is easy to find. Gift shop has VERY fair prices.
Excellent place. You should get Nick as tour guide, he was really helpful and very charismatic.
This was a great experience for my family. Much better than we expected. Beautiful and diverse formations throughout.
The cave tour was very informative. This is also one of the largest caves I have visited. There are very few places where one might feel claustrophobic and many of the formations are very beautiful.
This cave is huge and has some great history. It's kid friendly the paths are paved the entire tour so you could bring a wheelchair or stroller if you needed. Worth every penny.
Fantastic experience with my family. We enjoyed our tour guide so much. Ask for Rooster, if you want knowledge & a good time going through the cavern. He was a wonderful guide & funny. We love that they made everything accessible & assist with your elderly or disabled. We are planning another trip for a family member that would not be able to go if it was not for the elderly/disabled option. Great place, great staff & beautiful cavern.
Well worth the time to visit. A wonderful natural resource of nature's beauty.
Went here on a field trip. Very friendly and educating. Love the stories and caverns. Will definitely come back!
One of the most wonderful places to visit in Alabama. Even seeing the reflecting pool is neat which make the cave look even biger.
Fun and interesting time with my daughter on her class field trip. The cavern is so beautiful and was fun to explore. Can't wait to go back.
Very cool and definitely worth checking out. It has a paved sidewalk all the way so it is doable with a stroller...just hold on tight on the slopes
It was great there. They didn't do too much to disturb how it would look without human interference. And the tour guide did give a lot of fantatic facts. I would definitly go again!!
The history of this place makes it stand out. Ask for Hunter as a tour guide, he entertains as well as educates
This cavern is cool! No... really... its @ 58 degrees year round! And it is a really sweet trip. I highly recommend it for adults and children.
Great experience and knowledgeable tour guide. My first time ever exploring a cave.
Amazing! Gigantic! Awesome! A true natural wonder that is worth the price. Absolutely worth going. Take your phone camera. I didn't and regret it.
This place is awesome! We had rooster for our tour guide, he was informative and funny! It is stroller friendly. Love this place will be back!
One of are favorite places on are 8,000 Mile Trip Belinda was really great
Nick was our tour guide and he did a fabulous job of educating our 57 member ECHO Ministrues group! Thanks Nick!!
Beautiful caverns. Opening is amazing. Lots of interesting cave formations to see. Part of Adventures of Tom Sawyer filmed here. The "starlight" surprise light show at the end of the tour was beautiful. Definitely worth a visit!
Had a very nice visit today. Been there multiple times, Coming through this time to see what kind of changes have been made. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Got out walked the trail today look at the flowers blooming. Always in joyful place to go.
Beautiful natural cavern that visitors can follow for 3/4 of a mile. The tour guides are friendly, and the walkways are manageable for people of all ages and abilities.
An enormous and beautiful cave in this state park. It is very accessible to visitors.
This was an amazing beauty tucked in our state of Alabama. Our tour guide, James, was very knowledgeable and shared fascinating stories of the history of the caverns. Great for kids and adults ! Well worth the trip.
It was wonderful everybody should go see it.
Absolutely the most beautiful cave I have ever been to!
Very interesting tour, easy to walk the total distance. Might be a bit high priced at $19.00 but at least it supports the parks.
An awesome little adventure for family, friends, or dates, rougly 20$ a person, not positive on that. the tour guide knowledgeable and funny, only suggestion is bring a hoodie because inside cave, although very cool, is rather chilly.
Interesting. Hard walking uphhill and down for older folks. Slippery walkway. Bring a sweater/jacket. Cold and damp inside.
Best cave I've ever seen.
Park is beautiful. Great little gift shop with very nice guided cave tours. Loved all of the sights and had a really great time. Only giving three stars because of the price paid 85.00 for three people to tour the cave which is a little steep in my personal opinion. Went with myself and my two children all had fun definitely enjoyed the tour just a little pricey and something we won't be doing again because of that.
Absolutely fantastic. Can't believe I hadn't visited before. Rooster led a great tour. Hope to visit again with the rest of the family.
So interesting. Historical cave with beautiful geology and formations which leave you breathless and amazed. It is truly a place to visit in the State of Alabama.
Beautiful Park. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly!
Have been to other caverns. This place is pricey for what you get. Nice tour guides.
Fantastic caves and very well kept.
Beautiful! Rooster was a great tour guide. I learned so much with our school group. Can't wait to take the family.
Very interesting formations. Worth a visit. Guide did a good job.The only downfall is, I felt it was a little pricey.
Very cool cave to show the family, fun way to escape the heat.
Make sure you have the endurance and that you're not claustrophobic
Staff is great. We really had a great tour. Beautiful cave and formations. Was reasonably priced and we did not feel rushed through on the tour. Our guide mades sure to stay back so we did not get left behind. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
I believe this review would be much different if we had a tour guide that enjoyed their job. Cavern was very interesting but don't know much more about it than what we have read.
Very nice. I first went here as a kid and this is a trip with grandkids, so it's been a while. But the park is nicely done and the cave is spectacular. I would recommend this to anyone.
This is the biggest cave we've been in and so very interesting with all the formations in every "room" of the cave. You get to see fossilized sea sponges and a fossilized shark tooth millions of years old. The guides and park staff were so nice and very knowledgeable. We made it a day trip yesterday from Birmingham.
Worth the drive in the country to get to this little gem. The cavern is not so little and the guide was exceptional on his knowledge. A must see for all in the south east. We toured with a couple from Croatia who had driven that day from New Orleans just to see this cave. I'm saying just do it! Easy walk with a few inclines.
Beautiful place, excellent tour, not over crowded, some nice history to the place.
Wonderful cave tour. My Boy Scouts loved it. Campground was clean. Great trail system and geocaching nearby.
Well worth the visit!
Drove two hours out of our way, got there told us the tours were full. So make sure you call ahead of time to get in. There was only 20/30 people there. so they need more tour guides or replace the old lady at the ticket booth.
Long walk but amazing
the caverns themselves are very nice, grounds are well maintained, however; the employee selling tickets the morning of 7/25/19 could use some customer service skills especially when greeting people from all over that visit your facility. gift shop is typical of any tourist gift shop but looked as though they needed to restock . tour guide, Milton was pleasant. no military or other types of discounts were offered. wheelchair and stroller friendly but extremely steep inclines and declines.
Awesome place to visit very friendly staff and worth every penny
Great tour and guide and nice to do in the afternoon to cool off in the summer!
Easy walk and amazing views...worth the stop when your in the area.
Had a great time, kids loved it. Take the time to do the gem mining. But keep in mind, its alot of steep hill walking inside the caverns.
Very nice tour. Glad I went. Our tour guide Nick was awesome. Keep up the great work. Hook'em Horns!
.Milton was my guide. And it was a great experience. So glad I took the time to go.
The most amazing cavern I have ever toured. The sheer size is mind boggling. The beauty of an underground world! They have made it very easy to navigate with concrete paths and railings. Very well done. The guide was informative and funny. I recommend to anyone who goes through, to visit. You won't be sorry. It's worth every penny.
The cave itself is extraordinarily beautiful. Add to that top-knotch tour guides, and you have a perfect excursion. Go see this place!
Beautiful caverns the walk thru is well documented by the docent. Go at a quiet time if possible as it can be hard to hear.
One place that was worth! All the positive reviews are right and any negative reviews have been corrected. :)
Really beautiful! Our guide was amazing! She really took the time to explain and answer questions and didn't rush us through the tour.
Gorgeous cave but the price is rather steep. ($20/person) It would be really nice if they had a discounted price for Alabama residents since it is a state park. Also if you live in the area be sure to check out the brochure stand. Theres lots of great day trip ideas in there!
Fantastic views, well maintained and trevor was an awesome guide, even showed us some bats outside the gift shop
We came on a family trip...it was an awesome experience.
Have been to several caverns, but this was our favorite.
This was a really fun cave to go to. Be prepared to walk on a wet trail, uphill and downhill. Little bit strenuous for older people.
COO place to be on a hot day.. Awesome place.
I took my Grandchildren there yesterday. We had a great time. Summer our tour guide was excellent. The Caverns are worth the trip and the price. Great way to spend part of the day. Bring your Camera. Highly recommend.
I have fond memories of the caverns in kindergarten and now many years later. It’s fun for all ages. It is a long walk up and down the paved trail.
A great place to visit! Caves are the same temperature year round, so in the Summer you may need to take a light jacket/sweater. Wear tennis shoes. I believe it is a mile and a 1/2 in and out (complete trip). There are many surprises on the way that I won't spoil for you here. They have bathrooms, memorabilia and ice cream! I can't remember if they have food although I don't believe they do. The drive there is also beautiful! Worth the trip and fun for all ages!
I could have given this a 5 star however.... I walk with a cane and I need to sit down often. There are no benches through out the tour. There are no steps, unless you choose to use them, but there are steep angles. I would caution those in wheel chairs. Steep angles are wet and you might have problems with traction. We liked the Caverns and would recommend them, but please truly be wheelchair and handicap friendly, if you promote that you are.
Super cool cave, with some really dedicated folks working there. Just wish the state would share some of the parks dallors and totally rehab the campground and facilities. Proximity to Huntsville could be a revenue generator for the park if it's campground facilities were better. It's best and main attribute, the cave, is worth the visit and cost of admission.
Went on a field trip with over 50 fourth graders. Personnel did a great job with them!!! One suggestion however: Though the information was fascinating to the adults, the attention span of a fourth grader is not quite the same. Maybe a little less detail, outside the main point of an attraction, might help keep a large group of children's attention. Again however, very impressed with how they handled the group.
Not only is it educational but it is beautiful
The guide was really nice. I got to learn so much about the history of the cave and how it came to be. Nice place for photography. Lovely scenery.
Amazing place to visit. Tour guides are very knowledgeable and personable. Highly recommended!
Everyone should see this. Cathedral Caverns is a gem in Alabama. Well lighted and comfortable tour. Very nice drive through the country to get there.
Thouroughly enjoyed my visit to the caverns. A very good guide. Easy to walk. Beautiful lighting.
Wheelchair review. Very clean cute, small park. My daughter (7yrs) is a wheelchair user, she had a blast rolling around the accessible areas. The area around the building and porch area are very wheelchair friendly. The gem mining not so much, unfortunately. As for the cavern itself, while it is wheelchair accessible it isnt so much wheelchair friendly, the inclines are STEEP, very steep. Definitely take advantage of the golf cart (they offer it for free). Everyone was very nice, and we very much enjoyed our time.
Great cavern! A marvel of nature! A must see if you are in North Alabama. James "Rooster" was an excellent tour guide. He was knowledgable and entertaining. The cavern is mobility accessible via a golf cart driven by your guide.
Awesome cavern. Amazing how open it is. Goes back a good distance. As with most caverns, it leaves you wanting to see more than they allow
Excellent family and friend outing! Entertaining guides! Beautiful cave with natural looking lighting instead of garish colored floodlights everywhere.
Beautiful long was tho make sure you have the hike in you
Beautiful experience! The gift shop has tons of cute souvenirs and the prices are reasonable!
Gorgeous! Some avoid caverns because of feelings of closeness. You won't find that here. Don't miss out.
Great way to introduce someone to the experience of being underground. This mile and a half guided tour is both educational and fun. Experienced guides tell the story of the caverns and point out and explain the many wonderful formations. Enjoy the gift shop, and the cool mountain air.
It was ok. Not a lot of color. Guide gave a good background.
Very interesting, good family day trip spot.
It was soooo fun and had Native American artifacts
Very great place to visit with your family and the cave is amazing. It's beautiful and cool inside. The guide tells about the history of the Cavern. Another one of God's creation.
Really wonderful with a great guide-stephanie. You must see!!
Great experience to walk through cave. Accessible paved path and lighting easy for all to access. Tour is required and a bit pricey.
My eight year old great nephew and my nephew and niece were visiting and loved it!! We bought some stuff in the gift shop. The staff was really friendly and informative. Our tour guide was also very knowledgeable about the history of the cave.
Didn't see any reviews about the backcountry campsites so here it is: We took the yellow trail to the mountain campsite for the night and it was awesome. There was an awning over our tent with ropes and easy places to hang stuff, and there were marshmallow hooks provided (big points gained there), and a bucket of water for fire emergencies. There was also an empty bucket there we used to seal up food trash for the night before taking it down in the morning. The yellow trail to the site was our first big hike with fully loaded backpacks this year so we were a bit winded but it was totally doable. Lots of very cool little caves and interesting insects along the way. As for the cave tours, DANG! Our guide Milton was the best. He picked up and (humanely) tossed a snake out of visitors' paths and had so many great stories and cool features to share along the way. What was already a pretty magical experience was made even cooler by his expertise. We had a really great time here, highly recommend.
It's a cool place to go on a hot day
This place is beautiful and well worth the tour! A little adventure close to home.
Just an awesome place! Beautiful! Fascinating people!
Awesome hidden gem of North AL, go visit when summer heat is unbearable... the cave is nice and cool
Easy enough your for little ones and older people.
This place is definitely a must see. Super cool and wonderful.
This was an unexpected find. What a beautiful place. Caverns have always been something that I enjoy exploring and this one is no different. Prehistoric sharks teeth in the cealing of the caves to the 11 story high cavernous room. There is more to be seen here but the cave hasn't opened the way to get to it yet. I'll be back.
Fantastic tour and well worth the time and money. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and fun to listen to. Great thing to do on either a hot or rainy day with the kids! Recommend wearing tennis shoes as path is a little damp and a light sweatshirt/jacket if it’s a really hot day as I was a tad chilly in shorts, T-shirt and flip flops
Good times
Cathedral caverns is a must see. The size is amazing, with easy access on a paved path all the way to the back. Fascinating formations. I have gone 3 times, each with different visitors and have enjoyed it each time
Loved it,I will go again, great for family.
A very beautiful place. A must see if in the area
Wonderful atmosphere. Great tour guide Nick (he said it was only his 2nd week doing this, but I couldn't tell. Very informative and fun.) My only wish is that I could explore this cave off the trail one day!
Great place to visit. Walk isn't too bad, but sure makes you feel your age. The caverns are HUGE for a cave. I've been in a lot of caves, but these have the largest caverns I've ever seen.
$20.00 is WAY too much to visit a hole in the ground... The grounds outside were well kept...but then...that money had to go for something....
Great summer activity! The cave is fascinating and it's so cool and comfortable. Great for a hot summer day!
Beautiful cave. We had a great guide (Rooster)!! Easy walk for all. Highly recommend!
Cathedral Caverns was amazing! What a hidden gem in North Alabama. Our tour guide, "Rooster", was so funny and informative. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes! The path through the cave is paved but it is a tough walk. Up and down some 45° inclines, and at least one that was even greater than that towards the back. I would definitely recommend going and checking out the stalagmite forest inside. And this place gives dark a whole new meaning when they turn the lights out.
Cathedral Cave is very interesting as the formations are beautiful. Unfortunately, it is a dead cave as there is no active growth of the stalagmites and stalagtites. It's worth seeing as the history of it and how it got its name. It is accessible for strollers, and they even take a golf cart in there if needed. Its damp with 100% humidity but the temperature is cooler. People with vision problems or depth perception may want to take a small flashlight even though the concrete pathway is slightly lit. It's approximately 1.3 miles total distance. The natural opening of the cave is awesome.
Cathedral Caverns is a beautiful place. It wasn't busy when we went and wound up with a personal tour guide. She was knowledgeable about the history as well as the cave formations. We did get to spend a bit of extra time since it was the last tour of the day and it was just us. I highly recommend this tour.
Nice change of pace after visiting Ruby Falls. Much nicer time here, less rushed in and out. Thorough tour and good price.
This was one of the most enjoyable cave experiences I've had. The trip into the cave was led by a local college student and was great. The hike is ADA friendly and if you haven't visited you're missing out on one of the jewels in the area!
Amazing doesnt even come close to describing the beautiy of this place
The Cathedral Caverns are a spectacular natural cave system near the quaint community of Woodville Alabama. As you arrive you will park next to a large picnic pavillion that is just steps away from the Park's Office/Gift Shop. The restrooms are clean and well maintained. There is an area adjacent to the Gift Shop that is great for a family or group photo opportunity and an opportunity to screen and wash local rocks an gemstones. The entrance to the Caverns is about 100 feet from the Park Office front porch. Look up into the rafters of the porch as you pass under and you might see bats that are permanent residents of the caves. The entrance to the cave is one of the largest natural opening I personally have ever seen. A 6 to 7 degree sloped concrete path takes you into the cavern system. This is a guided tour conducted by knowledgeable and personable guides. Only 3/4 of a mile of the cave system is accessible by the public, but that portion is beautiful. Be prepared to take many pictures as there is something wonderful at every turn. I suggest the you wear a light jacket, sweater, or sweatshirt as the cave temperature is about 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The path is over 70 inches wide and concrete the entire distance. Wheelchairs and strollers can make the trip, but be aware that there are a number of areas along the path that are at 7 to 8 degrees sloping up and down. The 1 1/2 miles, round trip trek, will take about 2 hours. Well worth the time and effort.
Very nice cavern with large cave entrance. The tour is definitely worth the hour and a half allotted. The trail through the cave is nice and wide. There we're not any tight squeezes along the trail. We were allowed to take our stroller with us into the cave on the tour and had no problems navigating the trail with it. There are a few slightly steep places, and the floor can be wet or slightly slick in a few spots, so that might be the only challenge encountered in dealing with a stroller. The tour takes you about a half mile back into the cave so with the walk back it is about a mile trip total. There are 3 tours offered daily. The waiting area outside the entrance is a nice spot and include s a covered porch, so this is a good rainy day thing to do. There are some trails around the outside of the caves as well, but we have not tried these or the campgrounds, so my rating is based simply on the cave tour itself.
Loved exploring the underground wonders of Cathedral Caverns and the bats that inhabit it. Such remarkable aesthetic beauty.
