A bathroom floor had rotted out. The actual handyman did a pretty good job but the design was messed up. They wanted to install tile over OSB board, which you shouldn't do because the tile and the OSB expand and contract at different rates, so cracks would develop which would trap water between the tile and the wood. The job was going to cost $800 but because I wanted it waterproof it ended up costing over $2,000. 1/28/19 revision (two years later): The guy who installed the new floor wasn't sure how to waterproof it so I suggested concrete board, and he got some. Meantime, someone higher up in Schloegel came out and tried to convince me that I didn't need anything between the OSB and the tiles. I said that if water ever got between the tiles, it would sit under the tiles and eventually rot out the OSB. I saw an article saying that when you tile over wood, the wood and tile expand and contract at different rates which causes cracks between the tiles. He then showed me a trowel used in laying down the glue which had grooves in it. He said that because of those grooves, air would be able to circulate under the tiles. I don't know if he thought I was dumb or what, but I told him I disagreed. Then he said, "How would water ever get on the floor?" I reminded him that the floor was in a bathroom. I still don't know if he thought I was an idiot or if he was amazingly uninformed to be in that line of work. Then the installer put down the concrete board but said he wasn't sure if it was waterproof. Then he suggested adding some red stuff that you paint or trowel onto the concrete board, but he didn't know if it was waterproof or just water-resistant. I googled it and found out that it was waterproof, so he added that. All of this work doubled the price of the floor. If they had the expertise on how to install a waterproof floor to begin with, none of this would have happened and I could have saved about $1,000, or at least I would have known how much it was actually going to cost. Then, (two years later) the toilet came loose (which has never happened with any toilet I've ever owned and I'm OLD) so they came out and resealed the toilet and bolted it down for free even though the work was out of warranty. The guy who came out asked me to change my review (formally one star). That's why I'm re-writing this review. I may be too picky, but I was disappointed that this guy flushed the toilet when it wasn't completely sealed. I think that's why I found water stains on the bottom of the OSB in the basement, which were weren't there before. Then he moved the toilet without getting the water out, which caused water to get on the floor, and also get between the drain pipe and the OSB, so the OSB got wet. I didn't want him to put the toilet over the wet flooring, so I put a fan on the area, and, to his credit, he did come out the following week to put the toilet down. However, when he had left, I noticed that the feed pipe was leaking between the hose and the metal part of the pipe at the floor end. I'm sure that happened because when he originally pulled up the toilet which was heavy with water, he forgot to disconnect the feed pipe and inadvertently broke it. So now I have no working toilet. I'll fix this one myself. By the way, Charlie Schloegel answering my original post, says that I had plank flooring. I have 14" by 14" tile, so maybe he was talking about someone else's contract.

The only aspect keeping my rating from being perfect was a lack of communication from our designer. Once our contract was signed, she had very little communication with us and made some mistakes with billing. But we will use Schloegel again. They do excellent work.

We put off our full kitchen remodel for many years because it was overwhelming. We researched multiple remodeling companies throughout KC this winter, and after having a meeting with Schloegel, we knew they were the ones. We have just finished a nine-week Kitchen Remodel which included a Great Room, Dining Room, Hallway, and Laundry room. The process started with the design process. Kelsey Kimble was our designer, and she is amazing. She is very talented and made the design easy and fun. Every Sub-contractor Schloegel used on the project was top notch, and very professional! The project was completed on time, and on budget. Their professionalism, attention to detail, and joy to work with is why we will do our next project, Front Hardscaping, with Schloegel.

After doing much research to find a company to remodel 3 full bathrooms (2 small and 1 master bath) we were looking forward to work with Schloegel design and remodel based on the positive reviews and raves about the work and process. Unfortunately we never got that far. I left a voicemail on Tuesday and never got a return call so I called again on Thursday afternoon asking if I could speak with someone to discuss the bathroom remodels and that I had left a voicemail on Tuesday...I was told that my voicemail was sent to someone and I should get a call back... Come Friday at 4 I had still not received a call back so I called a third time. I was told that they didn't know why I didn't get a call back and there wasn't anyone really available to talk with me but I should get a call Monday... She promised... My husband told me to call back and cancel the meeting and the woman just said ok sorry. Very disappointed in this interaction.

We hired Schloegel Design Remodel to perform a number of minor repairs to our house such as patching drywall, tuck pointing our brick porch, painting some interior and exterior portions of the house, attaching some bathroom fixtures, fixing some loose woodwork on our deck, etc. Schloegel's team was entirely professional from start to finish. We have used Schloegel Design Remodel three different times for large projects in our home, but this was our first experience using the Handyman Division for a small project in our home. The difference between Schloegel employees and other repairman/contractors is amazing. Schloegel makes sure that the project is "finished", from putting on the right hardware to grouting small spots of tile exposed in the repair. Also everything is left clean, and materials put away. I have had other contractors leave me with drywall dust everywhere and even construction debris. You really do get what you pay for, and it matters to have people working in your home who respect it.

Poor communication from Kelly who came to bid the job. Very slow handyman. 3 ceiling fans hung from 8:30a until 2:00p. Still had wood rot to fix and storm doors to hang which wouldn't be completed at the end of the day along with painting the fixed wood. I even offered to paint! Unless you are having a "job" done like a Reno do not use because you will be taken for a ride financially!

Schloegel recently did a few projects around the house from me. Joe did an awesome job with everything he did. The plumbing for my washing machine was not to code and looked like it could collapse or implode at any moment (I live an an old home where short cuts had been taken in the past.) I had just purchased a new washing machine and wanted to make sure there weren't any issues. He re-did the plumbing and not only does it no longer look jankity but it's to code! He also fixed our rotting door frame. He took the time to do it right. I love that the Schloegel team takes the time and has the craftsmen skills to complete projects the right way, the first time.

I’ve used Schlegel on both the remodeling front and also their handyman service. They are worth every penny, always on time, professional, and they get the job done the first time. I’ve never had an unexpected change order or an issue with any of the folks over at Schloegel and I call their handyman service out at least 2-3 times a year. They warranty all their work and there quality is high end. I had them replace a shower last summer and they discovered some unforeseen issues with the demolition and framing. They didn’t change their price and they worked overtime to get the job done in my timeframe...their reviews say it all, can’t go wrong with these guys!
