I hired Coco & Sons to repair and repaint my historic storefront in St. Louis City. Throughout the entirety of the project I dealt solely with the owner, Chris. When asked, Chris said the work should last about "10 years". I told him I'd be fine with them either replacing the rotted wood, or repairing it based on their professional opinion. He insisted it could be repaired with a rot stop product and he wrote the contract as such. The work was completed over 2 days in early May and, for the most part, went well. His crew was polite and efficient. They even spent an extra 30 minutes doing a direct switch on 2 light fixtures on the façade free of charge. Immediately after completion I actually recommended them to a neighbor.
Unfortunately, within a week, cracks began forming on areas of the façade that were repaired. Soon after, Chris came by to take a look. He said he would return very soon to repair the areas. As a few more weeks passed more cracks began to form, the repaired areas of wood became soft, and the paint began to flake (photos attached). During this time, Chris did not return as previously stated. Further attempts to politely follow-up were met with excuses and avoidance. It should also be noted that I offered to pay Chris for the extra work that needed to be done.
I decided to wait nearly 4 weeks before following-up again. At this point the excuses and avoidance quickly changed into hostility, bullying, and even, at one point, a strongly implied physical threat (caught on video by my Ring Doorbell). In short, his behavior was completely unprofessional, inappropriate, and, at times, totally bizarre. Furthermore, I was told that my job was only $1,850 and I shouldn't expect much, especially not a guarantee. Obviously, had I known they didn't guarantee any of their work, I would have hired someone else. I'm now left with sub-par work that must be repaired by another contractor.
Even after this eruption at our final encounter, Chris went ahead and poorly smashed a bunch of fresh caulk into some of the cracks (photo attached). He then said he would return to check the caulk and paint over in a few days. To no one’s surprise, that was the last time I saw him.
I’d like to state that I completely understand that work sometimes does not come out as planned, even when the contractor is great. My real issue lies with the unbelievably unfortunate behavior during the follow-up. I rarely post negative reviews, but my experience was the worst I've ever had with a contractor. In fact, it was one of the worst experiences I've had with any business --- ever. I feel obligated to let others know about the encounter so maybe they can avoid the trouble we faced.
