I used Mr. Handyman twice. Even if you don't consider yourself handy around the house, let me assure you, whatever fix you can come up with will be just as good or better than the job that these guys will do. They are simply in a rush to move on to the next job and kludge together whatever quick fix they can, so save yourself a ton of money by doing it yourself, or find another contractor who will do a decent job.
For instance, I have a closet door that's constantly coming off the track. I try to fix it, and it might last a few months before it happens again. I communicated this over the phone - that I wanted it fixed properly, and the man on the phone told me that the service workers carried extra door tracks with them and that it could be replaced if necessary.
The service workers shows up and spends maybe 5 minutes on the door before moving onto some other small jobs. I had to go to work and left before he was finished. I got back, tried the closet door - opened and closed it very gently 5 times, and it completely fell over. I called and questioned why it hadn't been fixed properly; the guy gave me some excuse about me having left for work, but I was still there when he obviously considered his (incredibly crappy) job with the door done.
They are also constantly advertising specials and discounts on Angie's List and in mailings, but they don't want you to actually use these discounts. After a job was done, they even denied that they had agreed to give me a discount over the phone. The second time, they gave me trouble using a discount advertised on a mailing, saying the dates were wrong. I had to point out the dates on the mailing, and they reluctantly gave me the discount (I'm sure they just charged me more to compensate).
Their fees are absolutely ridiculous for the shoddy work that they do.
