Absolute painting was recommended to us for a small paint job I had as we prepare our home for sale. We made contact with them and the quote was provided via text after sending pictures and measurements.
The job involved 3 different paint colors and the quote was provided via text. The quote was “between $400-$800”. I thought was that was a pretty large range and I asked if the price included paint and was told yes. I chose to go with them because quality was an important factor and they had good reviews.
We scheduled and Absolute had to reschedule their original date. We understood and we asked if there was something we could do to help such as getting the paint? Conrad said that would be a big help.
Conrad and his father arrived on time and even suggested fixing a couple of ceiling cracks. I was impressed and I told them I would go to Lowe’s and pick up the paint for the small area on ceiling.
Conrad and his father were kind, clean and accommodating. Good people and we felt fortunate for the recommendation. They did a great job and we were pleased. Unfortunately, just as they were finishing up, my husband and I noticed a small ding in one of the walls. We brought it to their attention and Conrad’s father said he may have done that with the ladder. They patched it, painted over it, finished clean up and we thanked them. We told them we were grateful for their help and we may be interested in having them do some additional work down the rode. It all just felt really good.
The next day we noticed the area where they patched and touched up still wasn’t blended but I thought perhaps it needed more time to dry since it was brushed rather than rolled (I know very little about painting). The following day I sent Conrad a picture showing it was still noticeable. He responded “Oh sorry, normally it blends but the wall would have to be painted”
I told him okay and said he could arrange it at their convenience. He scheduled the repaint and showed up on time.
He repainted the wall (34” wide 96” tall) and finished up quickly -it looked perfect.
Then, Conrad told me it would cost $50. I was so surprised! I told him that I felt this was an error on their part and that I had no idea we would be charged. He responded in his text with an apology and made no mention of a charge. He told me his father said he didn’t think he damaged the wall and that it was necessary to charge because there is a cost for them to come out from Wailuku (to Wailea) and if I would have noticed it before they left, they wouldn’t have charged. I told him I didn’t mention it because the paint was still drying.
Conrad made no attempt to reconsider—he would not acknowledge it was their quality issue/error. I paid him and told him I was sincerely disappointed. Quite honestly, my feelings were hurt. I told my friend that recommended Absolute Painting and she told me they were at her home that very same day and repainted their ceiling. She lives about 5 miles away (not Wailuku).
For me, quality includes integrity. Using a phrase I recently heard—I don’t mind paying a good/fair price for quality but I do not like to feel robbed. Well, it was a small amount compared to the full charge but Absolute took ownership of the damaged wall and repair. They know more about blending/painting than I do, they apologized and they told me they needed to repaint the entire wall. I asked them to do it at their convenience and they were doing a large job about 5 miles away. Lastly, there was zero mention of charge. Yes, I feel robbed. And taken advantage of.
Edit from Absolute Response
* The repaint was to correct a quality issue, not a change order
* You were more than welcome to purchase paint. You said that would be a great help if I did. Not once did you provide me guidance what paint I should use. You are the pro...not me.
*You made zero mention of charge when stating you would need to come out and repaint wall.
*Our "friends" that recommended you are also very disappointed and surprised how you handled this. It's integrity....
