I hired Charlie to paint the entire interior of our home (minus closets) to match the existing paint color that was already present. We were just moving into our house and we didn’t mind the paint color so all we really wanted accomplished was holes and nail pops taken care of and a fresh coat of paint. Charlie was quick to get me an estimate and begin work. He bid me $3,200 for the painting of all interior walls with a single coat, and another $1,400 for all trim work. I decided to exclude the trim portion and just go with walls. He was a little more expensive than other bids I’d gotten, but I needed it painted before my furniture got deivered, and Charlie was the only company who was available within 2-3 weeks. He also talked me into one coat of paint, claiming that since I wasn’t changing the paint color, he could get it done in one coat and it would look great.
Well, it did not look great. For the most part, the walls are good, in most places. But in our foyer, you can see every single roller stroke because the paint was spread far too thin. It looks horrible in the sunlight, which is the whole point of a foyer (to lets sunlight in). There’s multiple spots in between where they cut the trim in and the roller strokes stopped where paint was not applied and areas missed. Also, after the job was finished, I spent the next two days painting over paint drips on my white doors, white base boards, and removing paint drips from my hardwood floors.
Overall, there was just a lot of carelessness incorporated into this job. The crews commonly showed up late to the job (from when they told me they’d start) with the average being about 45 minutes late. They even told me they’d be there at 8:00 AM and didn’t show up until 10:30. There were multiple spots throughout the home that were flat out missed, and areas where they didn’t cut in the trim. Also, a large number of areas that were cut in were messy, with wavy paint lines and parts where the paint went underneath the tape onto the white trim and baseboards. They washed their tools in my bathtub, sinks, and used my shower towel to clean something up because it was completely wet. Somebody spilled paint on a white blanket that was on my bed, tried to cover their tracks, and didn’t tell me about it. The only way I found out is when I got into bed that night and noticed my blanket and sheets were completely soaked. That said, Charlie and I did come to an agreement on a suitable replacement for the blanket. Somebody also put out their cigarette in my mulch bed and started a fire next to my house. Good thing I caught it early before it took off.
I brought up a number of inconsistencies with Charlie before he left my home and his response was, “what do you want me to do? Maybe I should have bid the job differently.” I even emailed him a few days later to remedy the situation and express my dissatisfaction with the job. He responded with placing all blame on me, the paying customer, and said he would not come out to fix anything without being paid more money. Unbelievable. He was also very nasty in his email with me even though I was more than cordial with him in the email I sent.
I wasn’t super happy with the job Charlie’s Painting did with my home. There was just too much carelessness in this job, too many spots I had to go back to personally re-paint because it was blatantly obvious (in any amount of light) that spots were clearly missed, and I had to clean up the white trim/doors from paint drips, as well as scrape it off of my hardwood floors. I also wasn’t happy that the owner of the company tried to blame me for his work or tried to tell me, after the fact, that he should have bid the job differently. Well, he didn’t bid it differently and he didnt, in my opinion, complete the work as promised in the contract.
