It is a very clean office with modern equipment. Their selection of glasses is huge, and all of my options were explained to me based on my needs. I would highly recommend this office.

Terrible customer service, incompetent lens manufacturing, and expensive/hard-sell tactics. What more could a consumer ask for? Every time I got glasses there they messed up the lens to the point they had to be sent back. EVERY SINGLE TIME You'd think they'd figure out not to polish the edges after the first or second time. Nope. This last time the sent them back, sanded the edges then realized they didn't fit the frames anymore. Genius! I also don't know what all the staff actually do there. They just seem to go in the back for 10-15 minutes, maybe browser their FB, chat with every other then eventually wander back out. Ridiculous. Never again.

So disappointing and dishonest! New in town (and in America) with my family, I bought eye glasses yesterday for my son (12 yo). The prescription was made a couple of days beforehand by one of the doctors in the same place. In the optical part, the clerck gave me a global number for the lenses and another for the frame. The total was about $370 out of my pocket! It's quite a lot and I asked her a detailed quote but she only wrote those 2 numbers on a little sticking paper. As I am new I didn't know if it was "normal" for a kid eye glasses here in the USA. Once at home I looked closely at my receipt and she sold me a bunch of unnecessary stuff such as "edge polish", ""anti reflective treatment premium" or "high index 1.67"! Why didn't she give me the detailed quote so I could refuse these unnecessary stuff! This is so dishonest. When I called them today in the morning to cancel the order, they told me it was too late. I feel like I was stolen :-((

I needed to have Oakley Rx lenses ordered to be placed in new frames that had been ordered online. My vision provider did not have a contract with Oakley. I found the local Oakley dealers from the Oakley website. I called another local dealer and they were short, curt and rude. She basically said, bring the frames in and we might be able to do it. I called Blacksburg Eye next. The woman who answered the phone was very pleasant. She answered all my questions and offered up the hours that the office was open. She said I could drop by anytime. I went to the office around lunchtime and the office was busy but I was serviced quickly and successfully. In the meantime, I also considered purchasing safety glasses. Note: I did not visit with the doctor and cannot voucher for his care/performance. Five stars for office staff and a pleasurable Oakley Rx lens order.

Great service! Dr. Mitchell was great and thoroughly explained everything to me. Everyone was quick to assist me in everything which was awesome. The only thing is that they didn't go over my insurance correctly so I now owe more money once I go back for my fitting which isn't a huge deal but no one ever likes to have to owe more money then was told. I will definitely be back though for my yearly visits it was a great experience.

The atmosphere was friendly and chic, but some of their practices were questionable, in my opinion. Two weeks ago was my first appointment with them. On the form I filled out, I checked a box that said I "Declined or had questions" about a procedure that required a dilation to check for abnormalities in my eyes (I wanted to ask a few questions). They did not ask me if I had questions and did the procedure. Later I picked out a frame, and someone helped me with adjusting them (Cindy, I believe). Today I picked them up, and had a problem with them pinching. Another woman suggested I get a larger frame, and asked Cindy why she didn't advise me as such. Her response was that she did, but I insisted on keeping it. It was brushed aside when I said the Cindy never told me that, and a relative who was there with me both times didn't remember that happening either. While neither of these things are bad on their own, I'm worried about if there are any other lies or malpractices happening going on. I will go back in about 2-3 weeks to pick up the new frames, so I'll see how that goes.

Dr. Dovie did great with my 3yo, but the office staff was less than helpful with me and my contacts, looking for opportunities to charge fees. Most importantly, the exam I received missed high ocular pressure in one of my eyes. Won't be returning.

I have always had issues with my eyes and usually I get so annoyed by how hard it is to find good glasses/contacts that I give up and just go with the bad eye contacts/glasses. It is really unfortunate because it impacts all aspects of my life as I cannot see well. I think over the years this has made my vision worse, impacted my school performance, and my happiness in general, but I have had some doctors really work with me to perfect my vision and that is what my experience here was like. Some doctors would just get annoyed and tell me that they can no longer help (I have had this happen), but here, Dr. Mitchell has been working closely with me to make sure I leave with contacts that I can actually see with. While we are still in the process of perfecting that, I know we are so close and I am so appreciative that I haven't been made to feel like a burden at this office because I also wish my vision wasn't so bad. I did have one really bad experience with a receptionist, and sometimes I have to leave a few messages to get a call back, but I can deal with that since the doctors are so great. I am glad I found Blacksburg Eye Associates and will continue to be a patient there!

Dr. Mitchell does a great job. However, once one gets to the glasses selection part, it's very different. They charge as much as they possibly can, bordering on the dishonest, the person "helping" me was in her own little money-grabbing world, programmed by her bosses.. She did try to see if she could get me a better deal when I pushed back hard against her, but her (invisible) bosses could not do it, she said. I like the facility, that doctor, and the selection, but will not go back there because they are out to make big bucks by claiming to be "high-end". She also read from my record that I had not "adjusted" to my glasses. In fact, the glasses had to be adjusted for me. Why not start with the patient's point of view? And why buy frames that boost snobbishness and, most importantly, the price, by getting then from Europe? Are there no US-made frames? We should be well over such silliness in this country!

I always feel confident after leaving Blacksburg Eye, because Dr. Dovie really cares about the condition of my eyes and offers feasible ideas to help with any vision or dryness problems I'm experiencing. I love everyone at Blacksburg Eye - Kim, Charlene and Dr. Stewart have taken great care of me. I recently got fitted for contact lenses for the first time and they worked with me time and again through probably 4 different varieties (brands + types) of contacts to find ones that work and are comfortable for my difficult eyes (crazy astigmatisms and such). That's also four (free of charge) contact lens follow up appointments too (at least... TBH, I lost count...!). I never ONCE felt rushed or felt in any way that they were less attentive or less caring. Every experience was as wonderful as the first. I can't recommend Blacksburg Eye highly enough! And... I love my new contacts!!! :)

Fortunately, every experience I've had with Blacksburg Eye Associates since moving to the area a few years ago has been absolutely amazing. The staff is always friendly and answers any questions I have with the utmost patience. Dr. Mitchell is my number one go to for any eye issues I'm having. Including but not limited to when I started getting ocular migraines a few years ago out of the blue and thought I might either be going crazy, or losing my eye sight entirely. Dr. Colleen Mitchell needs some instruction to improve her patient-doctor relationship skills. She was very condescending and made some unnecessary assumptions about me during the exam, saying things like, "I'm going to use some words you may not be familiar with; they may sound a little frightening, but don't worry, this is for the transcriptionist." She then laughed when she looked at my glasses to note how scratched and "dirty" the lenses were. I didn't schedule an exam to be belittled and laughed at. I will never frequent this business again, and I will actively tell others to avoid it. Note: This happened more than a year ago; however, the terrible experience at BEA with Dr. Mitchell has stuck with me.

In my first appointment I was pressured into dilating my eyes which I didn't want to do. Because my eyes were dilated, I didn't get the right prescription which she said only happens to 2 out of 100 people. I made a second appointment to fix my first prescription that they got wrong and was told on the phone I only had to pay my copay. At the end of the appointment they charged me twice my copay with no explanation. I had to wait in the exam room for the doctor for over 30 minutes (both times) and at the end of my second appointment, they were 45 minutes past their closing time so the woman who took care of me after the doctor was very rude because it seemed I was keeping her there late when it was the DOCTOR that was over 30 minutes late to a 10 minute appointment. Never again. Save your money.

The facilities and physician services were of a quality nature. However, for those reading this before trying them yourselves, BEWARE! When beginning to look into purchasing glasses, the assistant assumes you will use "premium quality" services and prices your product accordingly WITHOUT EVER ACKNOWLEDGING THAT ANYTHING LESS COSTLY EXISTS OR OFFERING YOU, THE CUSTOMER, AN OPTION! Only after persistent questioning did I get the truth and received a more reasonable quote. EVEN THEN, my estimate contained services I did not request or need! This happened to my family on more than one occasion. (Once we were quoted a price of $900+ for progressive bifocals AFTER the insurance payment.) It certainly smells of the sales associates receiving commissions. Whether that is true or not, I consider it very, very deceptive!

I was really impressed by the exam I received at Blacksburg Eye Associates. The doctors are always patient and caring, taking the time needed to explain things and never rushing the process. The lady in Optical was great, she showed me the new Maui Jim glasses (not sunglasses) and how they are the only place in the area that carries this line. I ended up getting a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses during the visit as well. I have been in glasses/contacts most of my life and have been to many places in the past and no place comes close to being as awesome as Blacksburg Eye.

I asked the women who served me not to give me the glasses in the show case and ratger to give me a new one. She promised to do so but then shae gave me the used one and after a week i got it broken. I send it to be replaced and again they give the same one after fixing the part and it broke again. I paid over 400$ out of my pocket including what they got from my insurance and they said sorry we can't do any change nor replacement. Save your money and go.

I wish to amend this review to say that even though the doctors are wonderful my correct glasses have still not arrived after 4 weeks and I have heard from at least two other customers with similar issues. So as for the optical department I am not nearly as impressed or happy. The prices also seem quite a bit higher than my previous visit. So as much as I love Dr. Dovie, due to the service post exam I am lowering my rating by 1 star :(

I’ve been going to Blacksburg Eye Associates for 3 years now for general check ups and have always had great experiences. However, I recently injured my eye and needed to go in to have it evaluated. The office staff was fabulous and fit me in the same morning I called. They didn’t ask for any information when I came in and let me go ahead and take a seat since I was in pain. The girl who took me back was very courteous and kind. She did as little as quickly as possible. Dr. Dovie was amazing during his exam and treatment plan. All information is digitally analyzed and stored for future tracking. Also, all relevant clinical tests, glaucoma screening and eyeglass prescription examination. Dr. Dovie is an excellent Doctor, and has even found relatively rare retinal cancer several times in the past in his practice. You will get a comprehensive discussion about the health of your eyes, as well as professional advice pertaining thereto. Eyeglasses are available on site. You will consider yourself fortunate that you visited this practice. The potential for retinal detachment and loss of sight is there as most of us reach retirement age. If you notice arc flashes in the corner of an eye upon a sudden turn of the head, or problems occurring in your field of vision, to include new floaters: Make an appointment with this practice. Hopefully, your eye might be ok, but this practice will evaluate in detail, photograph and track these developments. The fix would be a referral to a simple laser procedure, if there were a problem in progress. You will be happy you came in for an eye examination.

Dr. Dovie seems to be the best if you wear glasses - if you wear contacts beware. In 16 years of wearing contacts I've never had so much trouble. And after going through 5 different pairs of new contacts (that he wanted to change the brand) they wrote me not only the the wrong Rx, but it was for contacts that aren't even made. From others that I've talked to - there is a much greater attention to detail to actually getting prescriptions right if you wear glasses.

Fantastic Experience! My wife uses Blacksburg Eye Associates and has been impressed with them so my annual exam came due so I called and schedule an appointment. When I arrive I had my paperwork printed off to hand in to speed up the process of me being a first time patient. Within 5 minutes I was called back by Tiffany to get the exam and photos started. I have AMD so I have to get dilated anytime I'm seen by my specialist and I was dilated this time as well for my exam. After I was dilated, Tiffany said Dr. Mitchell would be in to see me shortly. When Dr. Mitchell came in she explained the reason she was not in to see me sooner was to make sure the dilation took full effect and to give my eyes time to relax and adjust to the dimness of the room. During and after the exam, Dr. Mitchell took the time to explain what she was doing, looking for and the reason behind what she was doing. She did "fuss" at me because I wear contacts mainly and sleep in them often, but the fussing was only because it could damage my vision or make my situation worse. So I was appreciative of the "fussing"! After the exam was over I had a few questions and she answered them all. She even gave me her business card which had her email and I emailed her to ask a couple of additional questions I had forgotten to ask during my visit. She responded in a timely fashion and was detailed in her response. I'm very glad to be seeing these folks at this office because they have a legitimate concern for our eye health! I will continue to see them even if insurance changes and they are no longer an "in network" provider. Keep up the great work and the professionalism and friendly staff!

Overall every staff person was very nice and helpful. The doctor herself (I don't recall who I saw) was also very nice. Usually the part of the exam where they ask you "one or two, three or four" is kind of stressful for me because I'm worried I'll pick the wrong one because it's often a toss up about which blurry image is less blurry. But she was patient and seemed to already know which one I was going to pick and I felt really comfortable about it. One of my favorite parts was picking out frames. I usually need help with that because I can only see about 5 inches in front of my face without glasses. And they actually provide that help! It was fun and I can't wait to get my new frames. I only have two minor complaints: 1) When I looked at the bill at the end of everything, there were some surprises. The doctor or maybe someone else had talked to me about a couple things that would be done to the lenses, but no one explained that those things would cost extra. I probably should have asked and I was going to get those extras anyway, but it would have been nice if they had been more up front about it. 2) I didn't realize that they don't do lenses in house until after the exam. Again, something I should have looked into, but as someone who has only ever gone to LensCrafters I was basing my expectations off of those experiences.

They have a great staff at the front desk and they have the best selection of glasses, contacts and sunglasses. They text you to remind you of your appointment and I ordered contacts like three days ago and got a text a few minutes ago saying they are ready to be picked up. This might not be a big deal for you city dwellers but out here everything takes forever to ship! I LOVE THIS PLACE AND ILL NEVER GO ANYWHERE ELSE. ALSO it's probably important to note that one of the staff members at the front desk to uncovered a benefit in my health plan for $150 that I had no idea about and would have never known to use had they not been knowledgeable about the insurance.

Blacksburg Eye Associates is fantastic. They are very easy to work with in terms of scheduling and trying out different contact lenses perscriptions. My favorite part is the fancy machine that takes a picture of your so you don't need dilation drops. It costs ~$40, but it's worth it. You'll get to see the inside (nearly 360 degrees) of your eye.

The optometrists are competent, quick and friendly. Unfortunately, the optician part of the business is a massive rip-off. They charge you an extra $20 if you want to replace lenses in frames you already own (instead of buying new frames from them), and quote lenses at 2-3x the going rate anywhere else. For example, mine were quoted at $575 for a pair of high-index, prescription sunglass lenses (w/o any frame). I have been wearing glasses all my life, and the last sunglasses lenses I purchased, in Philadelphia in 2016 and at the same prescription, were $385. Their justification for the $200 difference? "Premium materials"—no explanation of what these are. In addition, they nickel and dime you. Besides the aforementioned $20 charge (which also comes with a statement that they take no liability for your frames), they charge $45 to determine your pupillary distance (something that takes almost no time or effort, and most opticians do for free). I walked right out. I recommend that you avoid their optician business.
