Dr. Pence is very personable and never talks down to like other doctors have a tendency to do. She explains things in terms everyone can understand and empathizes with her patients.

After a few days of significant discomfort in one of my eyes, I gave Madeira Optical a call. The technician on site whom took my call was helpful and empathetic. She got me an appointment with Dr. Pence immediately due to my high level of concern. Right when I walked in the door, I was screened by the technician. She was efficient, asked clear questions, and provided exceptional service. Right after, I was sent to see Dr. Pence who came right in and provided a quick but thorough. I received a diagnosis, information to avoid similar issues going forward, and a prescription request within 15 minutes of walking in. Big thanks to the staff with Madeira Optical - the level of commitment and caring you ladies provide for your patients is notable. Skyler

Found better service at LensCrafters in the Kenwood mall. They did their best but I wear contacts and they didn't measure me for contact but they did for glasses. Long story short, they told me that I had to do a double appointment, one for glasses, one for contacts. anyway, super nice but inadequate.

Dr Pence is outstanding. She caught a potentially serious problem with my eye and referred me to a specialist. The specialist was impressed that my optometrist caught the issue early. I highly recommend Dr Pence.

I have been a patient at Madeira Optical for many years. I drive 45 minutes each way for a visit and it's well worth it. I'm always impressed with how clean and fresh the office is at any given time during the day. The staff is timely and professional and I'm always greeted with a smile and hello. During my last visit I was in for an exam and I decided I wanted to try new glasses. Lisa helped me sort through a lot of options and helped me decipher what looked best on my smaller head. I totally trusted her judgement and even had fun as we laughed at the not so flattering frames. I ended up choosing a red pair, which is a little out of my comfort zone. I'm so glad I trusted Lisa's opinions because everyone loves them and they are my favorite pair to date... and I've been wearing glasses for 25 years. During my exam I was having a little trouble with my eyes burning and itching. My prescription had changed a little and my contacts had been uncomfortable for awhile. Dr. Adams was very patient with me and really took the time to listen to my concerns. We discussed different options and she ordered multiple trial contacts for me to try. Dr. Adams wanted to get to the bottom of my itchy, burning eyes, so she examined further to find that they were extremely dry. She gave me some moistening drops and talked with me about how to care for my eyes during the allergy season. She was very helpful and I could definitely tell that she cares about each and every one of her patients. Before I left I went to the counter to checkout. All my paperwork and information was printed and ready to go. Lisa explained that when my trial contacts were in I would be notified and I could try them out and see which ones worked the best. If I still felt uncomfortable with any of them, then they would try some more until I found the ones I liked best. That is really important to me since I wear contacts all day, every day and want them to be as comfortable and clear as possible. I'm always impressed that I never have to wait very long when I arrive, yet the Doctor's, opticians and staff take their time with me and I'm never rushed. Scheduling patients and appointments in any kind of doctor's office setting must be highly calculated to stay on track and keep patients happy. The Madeira Optical ladies know what it takes to make it work.

Very poor customer service!!! After making an appointment over 24 hours prior to my visit and providing all insurance information. They inform me as I'm walking through the door that they don't accept my insurance. My insurance was documented on their website as one they accept as well as the receptionist stated they accepted it when making the appointment. I completely understand not accepting the insurance, however, it is unacceptable to tell a patient/customer you don't accept their insurance as they're walking through the door at 4:45pm for the appointment ridiculous!!! I took two hours off work and suffered through rush hour traffic to be turned away!! And the only reason provided was they normally check earlier in the day but didn't, it was a freak accident was the receptionist exact words. The most frustrating part of this situation is the totally lack of initial responsibility. When the receptionist called me as I was walking through their door to tell me they don't accept my insurance there was no accountability for the error on their part initially, it was simply ma'am we don't accept your insurance. After speaking with her in the office she finally admitted that it was an error on their part but then try to say it was a freak accident. Tell that statement to people who have actually lost a loved one in a real freak accident. This was an error on your part take initial responsibility and don't make excuses defending it. Very disappointed in the reaction to their error.

EDIT April, 2018: I went back to Madeira Optical for my one year check-up. AND....I was happy to say that Dr. Pence and the office HAD corrected many of my specific concerns and comments in my review. I felt that I was in a different office - for the better. The staff was much more friendly and engaging, without losing their efficiency. Maybe they just felt more relaxed in their roles, but for whatever reason, I just felt the home-town friendliness. I'm the type of person that - once I find a business I like, I'm loyal to them until something changes. I was not in the market for glasses in my following visit, so I cannot say whether I felt there was a significant change in frame selections, but...perhaps on that point I was a bit harsh considering that Madeira Optical is a small facility. After reading Dr. Pence's response to my original review, I really appreciated her frank and careful comments in return: transparency is the basis for a good, long-term relationship between a service provider and client/patient. ORIGINAL REVIEW: June, 2017 First of all, I would say that Dr. Pence is a fantastic doctor: thorough, personal, friendly, and helpful. Beyond my experience with the doctor, though, I did not enjoy my several visits to this business (was here a total of 3 times - once for me and twice for my daughter). The women who work here are very dedicated and efficient and friendly in the most superficial way - but for the most part, I did not find them personable or feel that they were actually glad I was there. Their names were not offered...I had to ask them. With only one exception in 3 visits, there was no conversation, no chatting (even while waiting 15 minutes in silence for one woman to process some information) that was not essential to business interaction. Some people might like this...but this did NOT feel like Madeira. I try very hard to choose businesses with the small-town Madeira feel to them. THIS place could have been in a Forest Park strip mall and I never would have known the difference. The selection of glasses is sparse. It looks like they have plenty to choose from until you realize that many of the frames are the 3 or 4 various colors available of the exact same shape. I was not happy with my final selection, but it was the best I could do. Finally, they are so NOT up front with costs - except for the extra cost for the eye ex-ray ($25), not a single mention was made in my 1.5 hour visit. Finally, after sitting 15 minutes watching the woman sitting at her post (practically silent) tallying up the costs for the visit, contacts, glasses, frames, etc, I finally had to ASK what anything cost. She dutifully went over the charges (we were above $800) and they were fine for me, but I think it's ridiculous that a customer has to ask a business what anything costs before she hands me the full bill. I took my daughter in 6 months, thinking that perhaps when I first visited, they were having a rough day, but our experience was pretty much the same as the first time I was there. In truth, I enjoyed our trip to our new Madeira dentist more than going to Madeira Optical.

This is one of my first reviews on google but I believe this doctor deserves it! I went to a previous doctor a year prior and was given the wrong prescription for my eyes and was forced to wear this contact prescription for a year. I didn’t like them and was recommended to Dr. Pence. I went to her and she corrected my prescription within 30 minutes and it was all covered by my insurance. The staff was very kind and helped me through the entire process. I am even going back to get my glasses through Dr. Pence. Great doctor, great staff and very thorough!

I've been going here for at least 5 years and all the technicians, doctors, and assistants I've worked with are wonderful. Dr Pence did my exam this year. She always explains what she's looking for and it's obvious she has experience in diagnosing eye diseases. Plenty of parking space in the back. One of few offices in the area covered by insurance that carry Lafont frames, in addition to other unique styles.

Always on time, fairly priced, optimal knowledge of all aspects of eye care. Thankful for this staff and office!

My first appointment with Madeira Optical was the best eye doctor appointment I've ever had. Dr Kritzer was extremely thorough, communicative, personable, and caring. She wanted to make certain I knew exactly what the tests were for, and what the results meant. The welcoming staff of Megan and Chelsea put me in great spirits as soon as I arrived. Chelsea helped me find a perfect new set of glasses, and all was a breeze. I also like that they take the payment right from my insurance, rather than charging me first, and asking me to get the reimbursement from my insurance company. Highly HIGHLY recommended!

Thank you all for a smooth experience from start to finish. There were many appointments times available that suited at my schedule when I called. I was greeted warmly by the front desk staff on the day of my appointment, thank you Stephanie! I didn’t have to wait for long at all to be taken back for my pre-testing services before my exam. Megan was professional, personable and efficient. She made me feel very comfortable and at ease. I saw Dr. Adams for my exam upon a personal referral from a good friend. Dr. Adams was lovely and took the time to answer any questions that I had and with sincere interest. I was fitted with contact lenses and they haven’t let me down yet! Very comfortable and just right for my needs. I took home a full years supply and I’ve already booked my next annual exam! Thank you Madeira Optical!
