I have been seeing Dr. Nickel for 4 years. I have felt that my examinations have been thorough and my eye health has been monitored effectively. However, on my most recent visit, I felt rushed and after being advised of a needed procedure, I had some concern with a couple of questions. Dr. Nickel actually told me that he needed to move on and that he had 6 other patients to see. The visit had not been extended in my opinion and isn't it my turn while he is in with me? I guess everyone has one of those days.

I had Lasik done and I'm pretty happy with the results. The intial eyes exams are pretty typical and the staff is very pleasant. The doctors are very personable and seem to act with genuine care and pride in their work. However, the actual surgery was mildly terrifying and oddly reminded me of movies scenes with human sacrifice and alien abductions. They put a lot of effort into making it painless and stressfrees as possible, but I'm the kind of person who is only happy when their miserable, so the whole zen and quite thing they were trying to promote really just kicked my amygdala into overdrive. The only thing I could possibly criticize is that the recovery time they promote is a bit exaggerated. More a lie of omission. I was able to see clearly and drive safely within a couple days, but it was like wearing a new pair of glasses with a much stronger perscription and you can't take them off. Took just over a week to really adjust and become comfortable with my improved vision.

I had an appointment at 2:30 p.m. and here it is 3:30 p.m. they had me re fill out the paper work I already filled out online. There is no sense of urgency here so you might want to cancel the rest of your day if you come here. If the wait for this is a reflection if the quality of their work I'm afraid for anyone who uses them.

I will never go back to this place. I went for a contact fitting ONLY. It was $100 up front. It's always been free in the past at other places. I waited a very long time. I'm bed bound so, sitting in a wheelchair for a long time is very hard on me. Once I finally get taken back, they start doing a full exam and talking about dilating my eyes... I said I did all this a week ago! I think they didn't know what I was there for! The doctor didn't listen to me at all. I had just had a seizure while waiting and he starts asking me all these irrelevant questions. I finally had to say I'M ONLY HERE FOR CONTACTS! It seemed to piss him off but, I really didn't care at that point. My brain is on fire from a seizure and you want to argue with me over a diagnosis that i don't actually have. Why does a doctor need to be involved to get contacts anyway? Bottom line I tried on two pairs that made my vision much worse and made me sick to my stomach but, they kept insisting I give them a try. What the hell for?! All in all I think they are very disorganized and clueless. I spent an hour and 25 minutes there and got nothing accomplished! I still can't see! Either they screwed up in scheduling and didn't want to admit it or this is a scam they're running. There is no reason a fitting should cost that much. I thought it was fishy to ask for payment up front. They didn't do that for my exam. This place just wants to bleed you dry. Save your money and especially your time and go somewhere else.

LOVED my experience with Heaton Eye Associates! The entire staff is top notch. I had Lasik done, and had 4 appointments from first visit to day after check and was impressed with every bit of the experience except timing. Which I have found is pretty much the case at all medical facilities in East Texas. However it is why I am giving 4 stars instead of 5. My 2 hr appointment the day before the surgery they were running 30-45 minutes behind. They did tell me, but with my surgery scheduled there wasn’t time for a reschedule and it left me missing other appointments elsewhere. The day of my surgery everyone was SO SWEET and so excited for me. The entire experience was exactly what you would hope, except once again the timing. Dr Nickles was AMAZING and came and explained the entire process start to finish so I was prepared for each step, Jennifer his nurse was great and made me extremely comfortable. My appointment was for 2:15 check and 2:30 surgery and told I to be ready to leave anytime between 3-4. I had my check at 2:30 and wasn’t taken back to the surgery waiting area until after 3. My ride came and was waiting until 4:15 but my surgery didn’t start until 4:20 and by that time she needed to run our kids across town for 4:30 swim team. The surgery was 10 min and by 4:30 I was waiting but my ride couldn’t get back to me until 4:45. On the 20 min ride home the numbing started to wear off and I was pretty uncomfortable and it took longer to fall asleep than I think it would have had I been able to go home and sleep immediately as they suggest. I recommend that you prepare to be there longer than you anticipate every time. But know you will have an amazing experience, especially if you know beforehand that to anticipate delays. My eyes were great the day after and I’m AMAZED and wish I had done the surgery 10 years ago. It’s life changing and I would recommend Heaton Eye to EVERYONE I know.

Came in for consult on cataract surgery and it took three hours. To me that seems a very long time to have to sit with little break. The surgery counselor looked for me in the wrong waiting room and it was a half-hour before I went looking for her. Apparently a mix-up in where I was waiting for her. Somebody dropped the ball--I understand that happens--but she did not look for me elsewhere. I was where I was told to wait. Everyone was very nice, but it was just a long, tiring process for an old lady!

When having an appointment patient has to wait at least an hour in waiting room, then have eyes dialated. Again can have 2-3 hour wait to see doctor. Many times patients packed in waiting room when we have had appt. In my opinion, the building is too small. Need to build newer and larger building!

Having worked in the healthcare field for 30 years, it becomes easy to find faults within the domain of healthcare operation. With the staff, procedures or the doctors. In my visits to Heaton Eye Associates I have not seen any problems. The staff is always a 110 percent giving into seeing that your visits are pleasant and very professional, yes I do try to trip them up by asking questions I know that they should not answer. They don't fall for it. Dr Heaton is a very well respected physican and explains what you need to know. Other clinics should take lessons.

Very efficient. Very friendly staff. They even have a children's room that walled off from the rest of the waiting room so your kids can play without bothering others. Kind of sound proof because my 15 month old son was squealing and jabber and the sound very muffled as Zoie and I came back to get them after her appointment. Herded through (literally) by very nice young ladies who know nothing. No explanation as to how this cataract surgery would work. After I called back asking questions, the surgical assistant explained a little more about what vision I would actually have after the initial surgery and how long my vision would be compromised. Very important as I work full time. Now I have received some eye drops in the mail but no instructions on when to start or how long to continue. So another call again trying to determine the actual instructions. Folks you could do much better on communicating the procedure and pre surgical instructions. I work in a hospital and know to ask questions because proper preparation is essential for a good outcome.

In 1989, after six years away from Texas, I retired and we returned home to east Texas. The first ophthalmologist I went to missed it on my Eye exam and my vision was worse with my new glasses. I chose another and again was not satisfied. Is the third time is the charm? Evidently it was and I have been with Heaton for twenty eight years, through cataract surgery and all my other problems. And, everything went like clockwork. Dr. Heaton did what he said he was going to do, I did what Dr. Heaton told me to do and, walla, I can see again! What's not to like?! Sidebar - I just love to watch/study good organized operations. Any good organized operation. Heaton Eye Associates is one of the best run, best organized, busy operations I have seen. Everyone is moving with a purpose. They never fail to timely adhere to my appointment time. I hate waiting. Everyone is polite, competent and acts like they are happy to be a part of Heaton Eye Associates.

My son and I really like Dr. Hunter. He’s very thorough and has great bed side manners. There’s a playroom in the waiting room and toys in the patient’s rooms. Which is a plus when you have small children. The only “bad” thing is, the wait. Some visits we don’t have to wait too long and others it’s at least an hour wait, but I think it’s worth it.

Great experience overall for a routine eye appointment. Check-in was easy and staff was very friendly. I got called back 15 min after my scheduled appt, but they were quite busy (after lunch). The tech/nurse doing my initial eye exam/contact fitting was skilled and the machines were impressive.
