I was introduced to Dr. Gail Royal, in early 2018, through a recommendation from one of my other doctors who had cataract surgery performed by her. I was quite surprised to learn from my doctor that I had cataracts and that I "must" see Dr. Royal! After preliminary examinations by her staff, and ultimately Dr. Royal, I knew I was in a safe and professional environment. I found her to be upfront and honest about the condition of my eyes, and valued her assessment and opinion in telling me that I wasn't "ready yet" for surgery. She was very explicit in her explanation as to why, and explained that certain criteria needed to be met before Medicare would consider processing a surgical claim I met with Dr. Royal several times before the spring of 2019. "The time had come" and my first surgery was scheduled April 26 and the second May 9. Both operations were painless and my aftercare by Dr. Royal and her staff was impeccable. Without question, I would highly recommend Dr. Royal to others.

I have been a patient of Dr. Royal for approximately 16 years. From our first meeting to last I have been very impressed with Dr. Royal. Her diagnostic ability is exceptional and her manner is very personable. Not only does one get the feeling Dr. Royal has a personal interest in your eye health her actions back that up. Dr. Royal has preformed two cataract surgeries for me, one of which was high risk and both were successful with no complications. The staff of Coastal Eye Group os also worthy of mention. They are friendly and professional. Important to me is that I see a lot of the same staff in each of there offices telling me there is not a great deal of turnover and the practice is well organized and managed. Over the years I have recommended Dr. Royal and Coastal Eye Group to many friends and all are pleased with their decision to go here for eye care. I have also been seeing Dr. Doering at the Murrells Inlet office for seven years after Dr. Royal detected a condition that falls within his specialty. All comments above apply equally to Dr. Doering and the Murrells inlet staff. I believe the efforts of Dr. Royal and Dr. Dopering have preserved my eyesight and cannot say enough good things about the group.

Because I am a Diabetic, Dr. Royal had been monitoring my Eye Health for the past several years, and this year she determined it was time for Cataract Surgery. I was impressed with the "well grooved process" that Dr. Royal's Team has in place to address Pre-Op requirements such as what "lens" was appropriate for my eyes, procedures from ordering Prescriptions Eye Drops, having a Checklist for the Patient to follow prior to Surgery, interacting with the Grande Dunes Surgery Center, information regarding Anesthesia, Dr. Royals Surgical proficiency that was further challenged by my Cataract imposing on my Iris which she had to correct, then taking care of your Eyes after Surgery, what activities a Patient can and can not do, thru Post-Op Instructions regarding each Eye Drop Dosage and duration time frames and Post-Op appointments with Dr. Royal. Literally, the Care reminded me of the cliche' "Womb to Tomb", which is what every Patient needs to help them deal with the "stress" of Surgery. RESULTS: Dr. Royal Surgically corrected my eyesight to (Right Eye) 20/25, (Left Eye) 20/20 with BOTH EYES = 20/20, and the Corrective Lens Restriction on my South Carolina Drivers License will now be removed. Dr. Royal, Thank you and your Team for making my Cataract Surgery so Successful!

They are very disorganised and unprofessional. Seems they're just out for the money. Had 5 surgeries, and not much improvement from when I went in. Dr. Sloan put a tube in my L eye that was supposed to relieve glaucoma pressure. It not only didn't work, but after informing him I was having problems with double vision 4 visits in a row and was ignored each time, I found that my R eye looked straight ahead, and my tube eye looked down and to the left. Hence the double vision. It seems the tube was installed incorrectly. Now I have to have a different Dr. attempt to repair the damage. Real hacks ! Steer clear of this place

I had to wait 3 months to get an appointment. Once I got into see the doctor I felt rushed and if he really didn’t know what was wrong. He said he would contact another doctor to check me out and never followed through . It was a waste of money and my time!

Dr Royal's examinations are enjoyable, in that she explains everything she sees and does, and lets you decide what is the best course of action. This was a horrible experience for me. A few weeks after having surgery on my R eye in Jan 2016, I started having trouble. I Called the office and told the girl that answered the phone I was having trouble. She transferred me to "a tech". I told her the about problems I was having and she told me to go to the drug store and get over the counter drops to put in it which I did. Dr. Sloan was never informed that I called. When I went in for surgery on my L eye, I told the OR nurse about the problems I was having with my R eye. She got upset and went to Dr. Sloan and told him. He looked at my chart and decided to not do surgery on L eye until the R eye was checked. I was taken from the OR to another doctor in the practice who was upstairs. He determined I had a large tear in the retina. Dr. Sloan went ahead and did the surgery on my L eye and an appointment was made for me to see Dr. Gutma their retina specialist at the time. Dr. Gutma performed a procedure where the retina was welded to the back of my eye. It has definitely been a hard, painful, aggravating thing to go through. The weld is holding but I have a blob of "stuff" that occupies a portion of the vision in my R eye. Dr. Gutma was going to perform surgery to clean out the blob but when I went in the next time told me he was leaving the practice and moving back north. He said I can always go to another retina specialist. I felt like the rug was pulled out from under me. I wish I had never had the surgery!

Barbara Mc Tiernan was the patient of Dr. Royal and I accompanied Barbara to the surgical center. The staff was there was very professional and courteous. Her surgeon was Dr. Royal, who saw her pre-operative and post operative at the surgical center, explaining in detail what was occurring. I attended her post operative visit with Dr. Royal and the staff at the office were kind and detailed in her treatment. Best short description?: Wait, wait & wait some more. I've been to one of the doctors here 8 times in one year for a chronic problem and it's only been because there's no other specialist in this area, not because I like the doctor or the practice. The doctor (Carl Sloan) appears to be adequately skilled but his "chairside manner" lacks a lot and so do his patient communication skills. The practice is one of the worst run from a patient's perspective. On any day of an appointment, it's necessary to set aside the entire morning or afternoon, even for what should be a quick recheck. I've never waited less than an hour and a half in the first waiting room or less than half an hour in the second. Just sitting...and waiting. Before seeing anybody. A post-op appointment was canceled with 3 days notice because "the doctor will not be in the office that week." Reschedule date?" - 5 weeks later. There was a sooner appt available in another location but "doctor does not allow his patients to be seen in more than one office." The clerical staff are minimally helpful and vary in friendliness depending on the individual. Phone calls & messages to the clerical staff have never been returned. The instant this practice gets any competition I'll bet the clientele drops dramatically. As it should.

Dr Royal performed my cataract surgery. We're all a little nervous about surgery, especially when it involves our eyes. Dr. Royal was great. She removed any apprehension I had, explained every phase of the procedures. She told me there would be no pain and there was none. Dr. Royal and her staff were always professional, kind, pleasant and showed compassion at every step and they LISTENED TO ME. I cannot thank Dr. Royal and her staff enough for making this cataract surgery a delightful experience. After I had the first eye done I couldn't wait to have the other one done. You could not make a better choice than electing to have Dr. Royal for your eye care needs. It was a wonderful experience. I trust my eyes to Dr. Royal and YOU CAN TOO. I AM FOREVER GRATEFUL.

Went to Conway office for pre-op intake.. Had both cataracts removed in April in Georgetown. Frank Sloan Sr. is great. Did not need to wait very long. Both surgeries took less than 90 minutes and with no pain, discomfort.or problems. Was pumping iron the next day.

I would not recommend to anyone. Did not see doctor until over 1 1/2 after my appointment time. While waiting, in second wait area, someone else complained about their wait to nurse. She asked him how long he had been waiting, when he replied that his appointment time was about an hour ago, she told him that was normal. Doctor seemed to be rushed and did not take much care to find out my concerns. Got impression they make their money on volume. Doctor did nothing for my problem but give me over the counter eye drop, which I already had. I just received bill. Called to ask about bill and was told that the girl that takes care of that was busy on computer and she would call me back. Hours later she finally returned my call. When I questioned what I was paying for she told me that if I refused to pay bill they would follow "proper channels to get paid". I told her I would pay a bill but wanted to understand what was done the warranted the bill. She told me she could have the office manager call me back. I told her to have the doctor call me back. I have yet to hear back from either one.

I have never been spoken to the way the receptionist spoke to me on the phone regarding a referral. I initially called another location {closer to my house} and they informed me that my referral went to the Myrtle beach location. I explained this to young lady who answered the phone and in return I recieved a very frustrated and sarcastic response stating that there’s no way the other location would even know because they have different fax numbers. I have a corneal ulcer that another doctor said needs to be immediately followed up with to make sure I don’t lose vision and the lady was without a doubt inconvenienced by my phone call. I ended up calling back the Murrells Inlet office and explained the entire situation and their front desk staff was amazing and pursued getting a referral for me to get an appointment on the books. I understand we all have bad days, especially Monday’s. But customer service trumps everything and it’s saddening that the first voice you hear at practice was so incredibly rude.

My wife & I have been patients of Dr. Royal for many years. This past Valentines Day Dr. Royal gave me a very special gift...my 20/20 vision back in my left eye. Two weeks later she gave me my right eye vision also. Yes, sometimes there's a bit of a wait but isn't getting your eyesight back like when you were a kid worth it? By the way, Dr. Royal did the same thing for my wife 12 years ago!
