Dr. Kumar and his staff have been wonderful over the last 2 1/2 years. They answer all my questions, kind, and worry about your well-being. The entire office always has a smile. I am glad to be a part of Carolina Retina Institute and would recommend them to anyone who is need of eye care.

Stellar Care by all! Dr. Kumar has created a culture of caring in this office and I am so grateful for all the folks who work here. From the front desk to the technicians and support staff - thank you for your knowledge and kindness throughout procedures and tests. Dr. Kumar answered on the second ring on a Saturday when I thought I was having a serious issue. He put me at ease, gave me sound advice, and the office followed up first thing Monday morning to check on me. That shows such excellence in patient care! I appreciate these professionals and would highly recommend!

I've been seeing Dr. Kumar since the beginning of time. He is not one of the best, but THE BEST Ophthalmologist I've ever been to. His work is very thorough, and takes the time to answer all questions and concerns. I'd recommend him to anyone. Along with Dr. Kumar being the Best Ophthalmologist he also has outstanding staff from the front desk down to his technicians who are also very thorough and understanding at each visit. Brittany is such a sweetpea. I just love them all.

I just had the strangest conversation with the office staff - whoever answered the appointment line. I wanted a routine medical eye exam, the type you're supposed to get every year or so. The office person told me that isn't what they do, that they focus on retinal matters. Since they are listed simply as an ophthalmologist, I asked how do I distinguish between a limited scope provider such as themselves and a full scope provider who will perform a routine eye health exam. She said, oh, you need an optometrist. I said I thought optometrists only did eyeglasses and contacts. She said that is correct. I said, but I want a medical exam, the routine type you're supposed to get every year or so. Isn't that an ophthalmologist. She said it is. So I said, back to my original question, how do I tell the difference between someone who provides what I need and someone who does limited scope such as you do? She said, you go to an optometrist. At that point I gave up and said I'd try somewhere else. Really, your office staff OUGHT to know the difference and be able to speak intelligently about it. The owner replied to my initial low review and apologized for the inexperience of the new staff person. And I learned from my insurance company that it’s now commonplace for optometrists to perform the general medical exam. So I’m better informed now, and I trust the new staffer is too. I appreciate the owner’s reply.

I am convinced that of any review we write, a health care professional's can be invaluable for those looking, in times of need, for a caring ethical caretaker for whom a patient is the reason he or she is in this profession. Some one whose work ethics are guided solely by what's best for the patient and not for their personal pocket books. Unfortunately innumerable times have we either heard or personally experienced being a little more than a number at a doctor's office. A feeling and an experience my aged in-laws have never had at Dr. Amit Kumar's practice. He has wonderful bed side manners and an expertise that provides an amazing sense of peace and comfort to those dealing with vision issues. My in-laws are patients at his practice and always come away from their appointments voicing their delight at his care, mannerisms and professional acumen. My mother-in-law, who is diabetic since the past 2 decades and therefore has several related vision issues, is always taken care of most gently and respectfully by Dr. Amit, and never rushed out of the appointment. Kudos to Dr Kumar and his staff for making sure there is great 'heart' along with eye care.

The best relationship with any doctor is when you have a feeling of complete trust, respect for the doctor's knowledge and his being truly concerned for your health. Doctor Kumar gets an A+ in providing all the above attributes. He also has taken the time/provided his staff with sharing his knowledge and methods. You can sense that from each of his team.

We have been very pleased with the quality of service and the meticulous work of Doctor Kumar. Doctor Kumar is very detailed and cautious with his delivery; genuinely concerned about his patients with no surprises. Being able to see out of both eyes is a miracle and we highly recommend Doctor Kumars services.

Stephen Katz

Staff was quite courteous and efficient. Dr. Kumar was as well. What I thought was disappointing was that nobody appeared to have looked at the forms I filled out or they would have realized that I was a physician myself.

About 18 months ago I was sent to Dr, Kumar by Dr. Kevin O'Neal. I couldn't see out of my right eye. I was greeted by his staff with a smile and kindness. After diagnosing my problem Dr. Kumar explained the problem affected both my eyes. He started treatment immediately. Dr. Kumar has the ability to put his patient at ease. You feel a kinship to everyone in the office. My daughter always accompanies me and we have complete confidence in Dr. Kumar. I highly recommend Carolina Retina Institute.

I have been going to Dr Kumar for many years. He did my cataracts and that went very well. He is also very careful and concerned about the impact of my diabetes on my eyes. I trust him.

Dr. Kumar and his staff at the Carolina Retina Institute are super! I had Cataract Surgery at Holly Springs Surgery Center and the receptionist, the nurses, the anesthesiologist were amazing. Dr. Kumar was professional and he had me out in 20 minutes. Thank you!

My in-laws have been going to Dr. Kumar for several years. He is a very trusted professional and extremely thorough. He carefully explains everything to them and they feel so comfortable discussing any concerns or questions with him. He provides excellent care and a very thoughtful diagnosis and treatment when needed. We are so thankful for the care he gives them!

In Jan 2015 I was referred to Carolina Retina Institute and Dr Kumar for an emergency condition with my left eye. Dr Kumar diagnosed the problem immediately and explained to me what was happening and why. He explained treatment options with pros and cons of each but recommended no intrusive action at that time. I was pleased that he recommended a conservative approach of continued close monitoring which time has proven to be the correct action. When it later became necessary (2016) to have cataract surgery (not the problem discussed above) I chose Dr Kumar because of my previous positive experience with him. The cataract surgeries are now complete. Both the vision results and the overall pre through post surgery process experience far exceeded my expectations. I give Dr Kumar and his entire staff top grades for their efficient, professional and friendly manner as I progressed through that experience. I highly recommend Dr Kumar and Carolina Retina Institute.

I have a scar tissue problem in my left eye and I also had cataracts in both eyes. All of this was detected by Dr. Kumar and explained professionally and in detail so that I completely understood the conditions and possible treatments. At a point I felt the cataracts were impinging on driving night vision I decided to go ahead with cataract surgery. The specific choices for replacement lens and living with them afterwards were carefully explained. Dr. K and staff would not go forward until they were convinced I fully understood the options. I chose the Toric IOL lenses, which also corrected for natural astigmatism. I also chose the mid-distance focus point, which requires reading lenses. The surgeries, although always with the emotions of any surgery, were by that time with complete confidence in Dr. K. Surgery of any kind gives me the willies at best, but it really helps to be inwardly sure things will be fine afterwards. The results are such that without any glasses at all I can read labels up on a shelf in the store, that in the house the usual surrounding room is in good focus. Glasses are not needed for watching TV. At night, if I wake up I can read the clock across the room. It was a wonderful improvement over before. Before the surgery I had been wearing progressive lenses for decades. I now have a single pair of progressive photo gray glasses which takes care of reading, sun glasses, a mount for my bike-riding rear view mirror, and my preference for night time sharp far distance (1 mile) focus. Daytime ordinary sun glasses work fine for driving. The zero astigmatism result from the Toric lenses allows the widest possible focus for progressive lenses so the progressives are really good, noticeably better than they were before the surgery. I usually take the glasses off in the house unless I'm reading or on my smartphone or the computer. For long computer sessions I have a $10 pair of 1.25 diopter reading glasses from Walgreens that now puts the computer screen in perfect focus top to bottom. My situation is so much better than it was before. Thank you Dr. K!

Dr. Kumar has been my retinologist for several years. He is a modern doctor with all the latest equipment and skills; but is still willing to take the time to listen and talk to his patients. I travel two hours each way to visit his office because he is worth it. I highly recommend him to anyone needing a retinologist; he saved my eyesight!

Dr. Kumar is a Harvard graduate, so that fact says much about him being highly qualified. He is never in a hurry, and thoroughly answers any questions. His office staff is very efficient, and his medical assistants know what they're doing. I can not recommend Carolina Retina Institute highly enough.

Stacy

I had a wonderful experience from the first time I called to inquire about getting an appointment. The front office staff is exceptionally friendly, which is important since they give the first impression of the practice. There was a bit of a wait in the lobby on the day of my appointment, but once I was taken back for my exam, I was treated with care and respect and my exams were done with sophisticated equipment. The technician was helpful and friendly. Dr. Kumar came in and shook my hand and gave me a thorough exam and explained things to me in a very professional manner. I would highly recommend Dr. Kumar’s practice to anyone!

Joe Tooley
