$30 Refraction Exam Scam: The appointment was fine & they are good at what they do, however, I received a phone call prior to my appointment telling me that I had to pay $30 for the refraction exam because my insurance does not cover it. My insurance does cover it & when I told them that it was clear as day on Emblems website
(“As a member of this plan, refractive eye exams are covered every 12 months.”) I was told to call my health carrier & ask them for the phone call reference # to provide to their office as proof that I was told during the conversation that I’m covered for the exam. Insane that I had to take time out of my day to do their job. My insurance company even told me that the doctors office is responsible for verifying such information. Nice how they call patients and tell them confidently that they aren’t covered when in fact they are & they are collecting $30 all day long from people who don’t need to be paying anything because their insurance covers it. If they are lazy to do their job of validating if this test is covered under the policies they accept, then they should AT THE VERY LEAST not lie outright to their patients over the phone by telling them their insurance doesn’t cover the exam. Instead, they should tell their patients that they will need to check if they are covered for that exam before arriving if they refuse to do their job and verify this information for their accepted policies. Robbing your patients is not the best way to treat the people who keep your doors open.
