Mass Eye and Ear is one of the many healthcare providers these days who provide zero transparency up front when it comes to the tests they plan to perform on you and the costs associated with them.
I visited Mass Eye and Ear in September to figure out why my eyes were irritated and red anytime I wore contact lenses. Within minutes of being seen, it was determined that I was allergic to the contact solution I had been using. That was all I was there to have diagnosed, but instead of sending me on my way, the technicians and doctor proceeded to perform several additional tests and exam procedures - all of which were billable services.
One test measured my astigmatism, and another checked my corrective lens prescription. They dilated my pupils even though they already knew what the issue was! Those are just three of four or five examples. The problem though is that I didn't visit the doctor with the intention or hope of having any of these extra procedures performed, in part because I routinely see an optometrist who performs these tests. I already knew I had astigmatism and I already had a valid lens prescription. Of course my insurance company and I were billed for the unnecessary and unrequested tests.
I feel sorry for the insurance companies and patients required to pay significant amounts of money for tests and procedures that really aren't medically necessary. What makes it worse is that each time you are treated, the bill amount you receive always ends up being a surprise.
I've written to Mass Eye and Ear's Patient Advocacy Group, and was not advocated for. Until I am able to see and approve a list of services that the doctor and staff plan to perform and their associated costs prior to a visit, I don't plan to return to Mass Eye and Ear. Tired of the wool being pulled over people's eyes!
