I have been going to Dr. Elkinson for more years than I can count. It is always a pleasure to visit the office for an appointment. From the time you first enter you are greeted by everyone, all of the staff is very professional and they ensure your visit goes smoothly and without delay. I can always depend on Josh to help me pick out the perfect glass frames - and he gets it right in one or two tries! When I had an eye issue I told Dr. Elkinson calling in and hearing his voice on the answering machine helped to calm me, knowing he would be able to help me solve my problem, which he did. Again - always a pleasant experience!

Didn’t even have a chance to show up here before this place treated me poorly. I called because I was interested in ordering contacts. I am not a patient but my insurance co. told me they were in-network and they sold the same contacts for $100 less than my regular eye doctor. They said they don’t usually service non-patients. I was told they would check with the eye doctor and insurance co. and promised me a call back. Said there have been too many insurance fraud cases going around and they would need ID. I offered to show up with my license, insurance card, and offical eye Rx from my optometrist... they said they’d get back to me. Never heard back so I followed up the next day and was told they were still checking with insurance to find out what their “obligation” is. If I am a paying customer and my insurance co. is referring you there is NO reason to not service me. Very disappointed, I suggest going elsewhere.

He is very thorough and takes his time with you to answer any questions you may have. All his staff are wonderful too. I actually moved away from the area but still make the 3 hour drive to South Portland as I have not found a better eye doctor!

Updated 2018: after being a client for roughly 20 years I became disabled and lost my insurance. Because of that the Dr. decided not to be my eye doctor anymore. Seems to be because he doesn't like to have too many MaineCare patients. "He's reached his limit". After the dozens of referrals (of which there was no perk to do so) and thousands of dollars spent I was denied care because of my disability. Abhorrent! Needless to say I will no longer refer freinds or family to this location after being treated like I didn't matter anymore during an urgent time in my life where I especially need the best care possible. Huge fail in exposing a very greedy side to this practice vs keeping faithful customers who trusted him for decades. Bad choice. original review: Thorough, courteous, punctual and knowledgeable. Not just the Dr. but the whole staff. Customer since the late 90's when he was a room at the end of a hallway in the Maine Mall. He will find ANYTHING that could be of issue now or in the future and work with you and others for the best solution for YOU! Thanks Dr. E

I am very impressed with Dr. Mark Elkinsons office. The staff are very pleasant. Dr. Elkinson is a very thorough eye doctor. He explains every test he performs, not only does he explain, he gives you time to ask any questions or state concerns. I have never felt rushed out the door, he takes his time. The office is very clean. His assistants clean the equipment in front of you. I have recommended him to 5 people thus far; 3 of whom already joined his practice, the other 2 people are looking into it.

My wife and I have been going here for years and have never had a bad experience. Dr. Elkinson is excellent and knows what he is talking about! Optical migraines? High eye pressure? Had no idea what any of that was before coming here. As far as glasses go, Josh is a pro at finding any frames you need.

I made my appointment assuming it would take 60 minutes. When I arrived I learned it would take 90, I was in a bind. The staff stepped up and got me out of the office, all tests completed and my current glasses adjusted, in a hair over an hour. I was really pleased. Josh who does the glasses is lovely. Dr. Elkinson is a gadget hound, which is fun. The woman who did my preliminary tests was smart and quick and kind (I'm sorry I didn't catch her name!). Two great recent experiences. This summer the lenses on my sunglasses warped which I guess can happen on occasion. They were still under warranty and they replaced them for free. Recently I got a pair of new glasses. Short version - I did not like how the lenses came out. They replaced them quickly and without complaint. I'm very pleased. Great service.

I had the same optometrist for a long time (20+ years) so when I moved to southern Maine, I was skeptical. Dr. Elkinson and his crew put my mind at ease with their professionalism and expertise. Dr. E made recommendations without being pushy, provided simple explanations to help me understand complicated situations and paid close attention to detail, recalling not only my medical history but also personal conversations from previous visits.
