Having any Dr. remove the old lens in your eyes and replace it with new ones sounds pretty radical for cataract surgery so I walked into Dr. Portis's office for the first time with apprehension but confidence knowing that I was going to one of the best Ophthalmologist in the nation! I chose the LensSx Laser approach with the AcrySof ReSTOR multifocal lens implanted ( which I qualified for after all the tests and measurements ) and it's like having new eyes! What was once blurred vision is now with amazing clarity and crispness. No glasses needed except for reading small print and that's with the weakest 100 power "readers" only. Dr. Portis and his entire staff from the office to the surgery room exude caring, patience and a professional demeanor that made my entire cataract surgery experience a wonderful one!

Truth be told, no matter how many people told me that it would be quick and easy....I was so scared to get Lasik! But, the fact that I now needed both glasses and contacts made me put the fear aside. I was referred to Dr. Portis by a great friend who also happens to be a MD. Dr. Portis took the time to find the precise prescription...it was definitely worth the extra visits. He clearly explained every step of the procedure and the after care. Now a little over a week past Lasik and I could not be happier with my decision. The procedure was all of 15 minutes and honestly didn't hurt at all. All that anxiety was for nothing. If I could change anything, the only thing would be to say that I wish I did it sooner! I am so grateful to have found my new ophthalmologist!

I am a patient of Jon M. Portis MD. I first want to say that I cannot write enough good things about him and his office to really get across how excellent he and his entire staff are. I have a very complicated prescription and have been to many eye doctors but he and his staff are the very best I have ever been to. The environment in the office is so friendly and family like and the staff goes out of its way to make sure you are comfortable and taken care of. They also make every effort to conform your appointments to your schedule. I want especially to commend Freddy who first screened me and checks the problem and prepares me to see Dr. Portis. I first went to Dr. Portis because my eyes were really red and dry and I could hardly get them open in the morning without using eye drops. Right away he knew I had blepharitis and prescribed just what I needed to cure it and keep me cured for a couple of years now. I no longer use any eye drops. I also had ink black floaters, which I no longer have, and I praise God who healed me and for the excellent eye doctor he sent me to in Dr. Portis. And when I have a problem, such as when I began to see a flashing light in one eye in the early morning, Dr. Portis' staff fit me right in the same day though it was fully booked and he saw me and took the time to examine me thoroughly and relieved all my fears as everything was good in my eyes. Then he did a follow up. I also have received from him the best prescription I have ever had for my eye glasses. And I must say that his optical department with Edgar Gonzalez as optician is wonderful and gives you very high quality frames and lenses. Edgar is a very kind and understanding person who is an expert at his job. He also helps you out with the fit and will keep adjusting for you if you need it. He is just amazing and makes you feel very special. Dr. Portis does that too. And even though I am not at his office very often and he sees hundreds of patients (he is very popular and always voted "Best Doctor"), when we were both at the grocery store one evening he recognized me and knew what problem I had had with my eyes and asked about how I was doing. I was amazed. I am an attorney and I have many clients so I know it can be difficult to remember the details of what you did for someone when some time has passed- especially if you just run into them at the market! I highly recommend Dr. Portis to everyone I know and I wanted to share that. If you need a good eye doctor and you want to get really excellent glasses you need to go to Dr. Portis and to his optical department. And his staff is wonderful. And they make sure everything used to examine you is sterile and clean too.

I put off cataract surgery 3 years after my optometrist said I was a prime candidate for it. Hence, to say the least, I was fearful and apprehensive. I even thought Hawaii had become ugly because I wasn't seeing the beautiful greens and blues!! To make a long story short, Dr. Portis did a magnificent job on a difficult laser surgery of very mature cataracts. Of course, I cannot believe the difference!! Having been extremely myopic since early childhood, it's been wonderful to see nearly 20/20 w/o glasses or contacts. I highly recommend Dr. Portis for anyone needing cataract surgery, and especially using laser technology.

Six months ago, I made the decision to finally get LASIX eye surgery to correct my nearsightedness that has plagued me for 20 years, and I couldn't be more pleased. My vision is now near perfect after the first couple weeks of variation (which was expected). No more tired eyes in the evening, nor being constantly worried about something happening to my contact while at the beach, or hiking, or traveling. Dr. Portis and everyone at the aloha laser eye vision was so polite and professional, highly recommended!

I am 67 years old and have worn either glasses or contacts since I was very young. The procedure I had done was LASIK to establish clear distance vision. The procedure was literally painless outside of some minor pressure applied for a short time around the eye socket during the operation. The procedure literally took less than 10 minutes and I was out and on my way home in minutes. The next day, my vision was a clear 20/20 with no complications and has remained that way ever since the operation took place. Dr. Portis's office staff are very professional and efficient and Dr. Portis is a no nonsense direct medical professional and very easy to deal with. I highly recommend Dr. Portis to anyone considering having this procedure done.

For 10 years I've been trying to decide if I should do Lasik. I finally had it done in May 2016 and I don't regret the decision. It has been a life-changing experience. Dr. Portis did an awesome job. My husband watched the surgery and was impressed with Dr. Portis. Sat in the office for 45 minutes, never got to see the DR. because I had to leave. I sat next to a lady that said she had been waiting for an hour and a half!, Very unprofessional. I highly recommend LASIK for anyone that fits the criteria for this surgery. The procedure itself was very quick, and I was home resting the same afternoon/evening. The freedom from having to wear contacts/glasses for distance vision is a huge benefit. I still have to wear reading glasses, but it's a small sacrifice compared to everything else. Dr. Portis and his staff prepared me well and covered all expectations before and after. It's been two weeks now, with no complications.

After much deliberation, I decided that if I qualified as a candidate, I would move forward with getting LASIK treatment. Dr. Portis is an expert and the ultimate perfectionist - exactly the type of doctor I wanted for my LASIK surgery. Throughout the process, his expertise in performing LASIK showed (in particular through the lifting and resetting of the corneal flap), and my procedure was not only quick, but performed with the utmost of precision and care. I had a very fast recovery time and little to no discomfort. Most importantly, I was seeing with around 20/2000 vision before surgery, and my LASIK corrected that to 20/15. Dr. Portis doesn't accept anything less than perfection with his work, and it shows.

I recently had cataract surgery using the Crystalens replacement lens with Super results. The correction is in one eye only at this time but has greatly improved my overall vision and now have 20 / 20 vision in my " new eye ". This has been a very positive and rewarding experience with Dr. Portis and his great staff ! The Crystalens is a good option if you are a looking for for lens replacement.

Loving Lasik. Two weeks in glasses to prep my eyes for the procedure when my vision was finally stable enough to qualify me as a candidate was the biggest hurdle. The procedure took about 15 minutes for both eyes with less than 10 seconds of 4/10 discomfort on each eye in the beginning, then a few minutes of focusing on red and green blinky lights. When I sat up I was able to read the clock! Two Valium and a long nap later I had just the mildest foreign body sensation in my left eye. Aftercare included antibiotic and steroid drops four times a day for a week in addition to the Restasis twice a day that was started one month prior to the procedure to address the anticipated dry eye. Systane Ultra single serving drops were a lifesaver for the first 6 days after the procedure when I had dry eyes and a very mild foreign body sensation in my left eye is completely gone. Now 8 days later my vision is perfect and my eyes feel great. Thank you for your amazing work Dr Portis!

Dr. Portis has been excellent in terms of service, knowledge and chairside manner. I have been seeing him for yearly checkups for prescription lenses and glasses but I decided to go for LASIK. At first, I was a bit anxious because I was afraid that something that might go wrong during the surgery that may affect my vision, but I was rest assured when he said "if you have ever slept with your contacts on, then that is much more dangerous than doing the surgery". You'll be awake during the surgery, but I was calm. It may have been the Valium that they give you to take 30 minutes prior to the operation. While awake, Dr. Portis was walking me through the process and asking often if I was doing okay. I felt no pain at all, just pressure being placed on the eye. Then right after the surgery, he stressed to keep your eyes closed so that the eyes can heal properly. Prior to the surgery, I was considered "legally blind" without corrective lenses. The day after the surgery I was scheduled for a follow-up and was seeing 20/20, which is amazing! The freedom to sleep and wake up with good vision and not worrying to remove contact lenses or look for your glasses in the dark has been awesome. I did suffer a bit of dry eyes during the night, which is a side effect of the surgery, but Dr. Portis reassured me that it will get better over time. I am 3 weeks out from the surgery and he was right, my eyes are not as dry as they were directly after the surgery. If you were looking for a reliable ophthalmologist, Dr. Portis is your guy. I also want to add that the the staff at the laser center and his office, especially Stephanie was really kind and helpful.

Dr. Portis has performed cataract surgery and three corrective laser surgeries on my wife following a retina detachment. We were very careful to select him as our ophthalmologists based on reputation, rating, and education. All of his surgical procedures were absolutely excellent. We are convinced he is one of the best in Honolulu. We have been patients for many years and highly recommend him. There was a period when his front office staff wasn't the best, but he now has a new team that is unfailingly excellent. For example, I experienced troubling symptoms today and the office staff was knowledgeable enough to recognize a potentially serious problem and find time for me to see the doctor immediately. I would now rate the office management staff as highly as I do the doctor himself.

Simply put...Dr. Portis is the BEST. Experience, highly-skilled and caring. On April 24, 2015, he completely restored the vision in my right eye in a procedure known as a Posterior Capsulotomy. I was one of a percentage of cataract patients who develop cloudiness in the capsule which holds the implanted artificial lens. With skill and confidence gained from years of performing this procedure, Dr. Portis perfectly aimed a laser and opened up the rear of the cloudy capsule, resulting in a return to my normal right eye vision of 20-25. The procedure took only about two-minutes, during which you're seated upright, in the same type of chair as a routine exam. There is no anesthesia. The only prep was eye drops and it required ZERO recovery time afterward. I was released immediately following the procedure and walked home without any bandage or patch over the eye. I was well-informed about the procedure by Dr. Portis in advance, but was still surprised at the how quickly and easily it went. I must admit to waiting too long to schedule an appointment to have this done. Maybe it was a little fear that it would be as easy as advertised, or fear of the laser. Boy! Was I wrong--on both counts. Having my vision restored, literally the minute it was complete, is mind-boggling. I can only urge those of you who have concerns (or fears) about the procedure to speak with Dr. Portis and learn more about it, rather than wait, like me. Sight is too important to not take advantage of this procedure. Laser technology, used by highly-trained, experienced professionals--like Dr. Portis--has been proven exceptionally safe with an unmatched record of success. Here's what it did for me: prior to the procedure, the vision in my right eye was 20-400! Now, it's back to 20-25--exactly where it was following the cataract surgery! My thanks go out to Dr. Portis' staff and administrative personnel. The procedure is covered by Medicare which I was extremely pleased to learn! They made everything easy for this old guy. Dr. Portis is an exceptional doctor, he performed LASIK eye surgery not only on me but also on my dad almost a decade ago. My father is actually the one who highly recommended Dr. Portis. Dr. Portis is great because he explains the process of LASIK thoroughly and really makes you feel comfortable with the procedure before moving forward. LASIK is a super-fast surgery in which you feel no pain. The procedure is about 10 minutes and Dr. Portis is always checking in with you, making sure you are doing okay. In my follow up appointments, my eye sight was verified to be 20/15, which I am super happy about! My experience with Dr. Portis from beginning to end has been phenomenal, I highly recommend him to anyone who is thinking about doing LASIK.

I had the best experience possible with my lasik eye surgery with Dr. Portis this past week. I only had one week in hawaii before heading back to california and everything went very smoothly. I was a bit worried about the timing of it all since I had a wedding to attend 2 days after the surgery and a trip to kauai the day after that. I wasn’t sure what the recovery process would be like but I had no issues whatsoever. I was able to enjoy my week without any complications as long as I followed a few simple directions post surgery. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and I would highly recommend Dr. Portis to anyone who is thinking about Lasik. I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I can finally see! Thank you!

I flew to Honolulu from an outer island for cataract surgery both eyes because (1) I sensed Dr. Portis to be a brilliant surgeon who would take the time to provide thoughtful attention to my unique eye condition & (2) he uses the modern femtosecond LenSx cool laser technology of real-time precise video images to remove your cloudy lenses & to install your new clear ones, vs the old-school method of manually using a blade to guess where to make the necessary incisions in your eye. My intuition was confirmed by the level of care he took with both my surgeries, & the great results achieved. Dr. Portis is an excellent & caring communicator. I recommend him to anyone.

I have been a long time patient of Dr. Portis. I have worn glasses almost all my life. I was very leary of Lasik as I had heard about stories of problems with the procedures in the past. I finally got the nerve to ask Dr. Portis about it. He provided me with great information and even had me try mono vision using contacts. He assured me that the technology has advanced so that I should feel no pain and the results will be exactly what I was hoping for, no glasses! When I found out I needed to have cataract surgery, I went to Dr. Jon Portis. It was the best choice I could have made. From the very beginning, Dr. Portis was so under- standing of my fear, anxiety, frustration--the whole nine yards about getting my eyesight back again. I've worn hard contact lens over 45 years. My astigmatism was so bad I could not wear soft lens. When Dr. Portis told me he could correct my eyes so that I would only need reading glasses, I jumped at it. He removed the cataracts, performed lasik and inserted a toric lens to correct my astigmatism and now I have about a 20/30 vision. I have never seen so well. I am so grateful to Dr. Portis. He opened my eyes (literally) to a whole new world.

I had the new symfony lenses inserted while removing cataracts I WAS both far and near sighted, I can now read fine print and see distance. I am about 7 weeks out from surgery and just started Surfing again, what a change. The recovery was fast I could read the next day!! I have a bit of haloing at night with street lights and a bit light sensitive at the beach with the glair off the water and sand. But the results are worth it. I cant recommend DR Portis and the Symony lens enough Mahalo Nui Ben Severson

He is patient and kind and inspires confidence in his professional capacity. My personal experience, after injuring my retina due to a fall, was that he was responsive and successfully repaired the damage. He continues his education to keep up with "cutting edge" techniques and offers lasik (to eliminate the need for glasses), an optician and a selection of frames for glasses, if needed, and even cosmetic botox treatments to reduce wrinkles around the eyes. When it is time for cataract surgery, I will trust Dr. Portis with the confidence that he will use the latest and safest techniques.
