While on vacation in Delaware, I required an immediate emergency eye appointment. Bear Eye Associates was so understanding and compassionate from the initial phone contact right through to the end of the treatment. The office staff worked me into their busy schedule and I was provided with directions on how to handle my situation until we arrived at the office. Dr. MacKewiz was personable, professional, and skillful. I am greatly indebted to him and his wonderful and caring staff for the excellent care I received. Our vacation was back on track in no time. Two thumbs up for Bear Eye Associates!

Im writing this review dumfounded with the lack of organization from this office and their staff. I have been coming to this Doctor for a few years now. The beginning was descent with signs of disorganization but nothing unnerving. As of recently I went back for a contacts checkup and everything began to unravel as my confidence in their capabilities diminished. I initially went in got a check up and setup for a fitting same day but they didn't have my prescription in stock. On this day they told me my lenses would be $65/box. I waited a few days and they called back to which I setup another fitting. I came back tried on and was good to go until I went to checkout. At this point they then quoted me $83/box and I had to advise them that's not what I was initially quoted so they honored the price closely at $69. I then wait a few days to try out the trials and called back to finalize my order. They said it would all be covered aside from a $12 shipping fee that I was just now hearing about. I paid the fee and several hours later they call back stating that they quoted me the wrong price AGAIN and now I owed $42 on top of the $12 they didn't tell me about. I then had to speak with the initial rep in order to get what they quoted me and the shipping waived. She was rude and continued to say this was a mistake and mistakes happen. I completely understand they do but they should also be learned from and given I had to correct them on two separate occasions I cannot say they have. In all honestly, I would not recommend this place to anyone nor go back myself. They are incredibly unorganized and will make you pay for their mistakes. They seem like descent people but are either understaffed or incompetent. Tread lightly here.

My experience with Bear Eye Associates was unbelievable. I thought I was going in for a routine eye exam because I needed a upgrade on my glasses and because of luckily choosing Bear Eye Associates I was able to get a diagnose of a illness I have been pursuing for 17 years. Doctors have been dismissing me for this long. Bear Eye Associates found ptosis and referred me out to a neurologist and my first thought was, what can a neurologist do. I was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis. Thank you for finally giving my dignity back after years of doctors stripping my dignity from me and making me feel less of a human being

Being the parent of a child with learning disabilities, I have seen many doctors and specialists. I called the office for a routine eye exam for my son who is getting older and wanted a great pair of glasses. I've heard the selection of frames was incredible for a a private office, not a chain. I was able to make an appointment rather quickly. The girl answering and scheduling my appointment was very friendly, warm and accommodating when I explained the urgency. I came in the next day only to be greeted by a very friendly staff. My paperwork had been completed ahead of time off of their beautiful and informative website. We went back rather quickly where the knowledgeable staff took our history and concerns. She was very quick and thorough. The doctor came in very shortly, greeted us and examined his eyes. He was very good and patient with my son who stutters and was very nervous. He answered all of our questions and I felt very confident trusting my sons eyes in his care. I did choose to have his eyes dilated which I knew would take about a half hour for them to dilate but I knew the doctor would thoroughly examine and flag any issues if more comprehensive. They did have a video on in the room before the doctor came in which did take the edge of nervousness off of my son! While being dilated we were able to browse the boutique of frames and start our selection. The staff again was wonderful and knowledgeable! My son ended up with a pair of transition glasses. I even got a great pair of sunglasses! A very good day at Bear Eye!

From the moment I walked in for my appointment, I was greeted with a very big smile from all of the staff. My appointment was on time, and the doctor was very personable. He explained what had been causing my eye irritation and how it should be fixed. Prior to this, I had seen 2 doctors who could not solve my issues. 2 days after seeing Dr. MacKewiz, I was completely healed. Side note - Awesome selection of sunglasses, the staff has great taste.

Recently traveled back home to Northern Delaware from the beach to see my old Eye Doctor. Well worth the trip after trying a couple other Doctor's closer to home. Have total confidence that Dr. Mac will get me the right prescription. Dr. Mac and I also talk sports in between testing. Really appreciate his thoroughness. Even though Dr. Mac explained that I didn't have much of a change in my prescription, I got an awesome pair of Costa sunglasses. As the owner of a retail establishment myself, I appreciate a good selection and the great customer service I always get from Renee. Good to know brick and mortar can still compete. If you're anywhere near Bear, this is THE BEST place to have your eyes examined and pic up a pair of sunglasses. It's worth the drive.

Great Dr. MacKewiz is very diligent and detailed eye doctor. He has the start of the medical practice which i like. He focuses on the patient and is very knowledgable - spends time with you and does not rush! He has an excellent staff. Easy to make appointments and knowledgable about insurance. Unfortunately, that lack of balance doesn't work for me any longer. 6/20/17 - Since the doctor chose to rebut my review, let me expound. It took me 2yrs to write a review because I am again due for an eye exam and in the process of searching for a new eye care professional. My last visit was not routine. I went to the office with a genuine concern. While I may have acknowledged my understanding, the doctor's monosyllabic answers to my inquiries could hardly be classified as a "detailed explanation". We chose this office simply due to the convenience of the location. Unfortunately, this became a case of nothing worthwhile comes easy. If the doctor were as sensitive to his patient's needs as he is to constructive criticism, there would be no disconnect.

Had a great experience at Bear Eye the other day. I was greeted in a friendly manner and taken back right away for my appointment. There's nothing worse than having to wait a while when you're on time for you appointment, so I really appreciated the promptness. Dr. MacKewicz and the professionals at Bear Eye Care may have saved my eye sight. I have been going to Bear Eye Care since relocating to Delaware in 2012. It was originally just a convenient location for me when I first moved to Delaware. However, I continued to go there after moving from Bear to Wilmington because of the great service and staff at the practice. However, recent events have given me a special appreciation for their competence and sense of urgency. In December, 2016 I became aware that my vision in my R eye was impaired. I also felt slight pressure in my eye. It felt like an object was in my eye but, could not be flushed. I was able to see Dr. MacKewicz immediately. Through the use of some sophisticated analytical tests he was able to diagnose my condition as Ischemic Optic Neuropathy. This is a condition that can continue to degenerate and cause further loss of sight, can spread to the other eye and in extreme cases, death. And there is no approved treatment. Dr. MacKewicz was able to get a Retina Specialist to keep his practice open late and see me the same day. He confirmed the diagnosis. Dr. MacKenzie also, sent me for bloodwork that same day to determine the form of the condition I have. And he was able to get me into a Nuerologist the following day. The following day I learned that I have ANION (not life threatening) but, still no approved treatment. Through the Neurologist was able to get into a Phase I clinical trial for a drug to treat my condition. The treatment arrested the progress of the condition and has had some restorative affects. The timing was critical-if I had not seen the Neurologist until the following Monday rather than Friday I would not have been eligible for the trial. There is no way to know how much more sight I could have lost. Dr. MacKewicz and his staff continued to follow up with me as I received my treatment. I don't know how many Optometrists I passed that day driving from Wilmington to Bear but, I am grateful I did.

This is my second time using this Optometrist and I like his practice. The staff are very friendly and they were able to answer my questions and concerns. The office has a vast selection of stylish sunglasses and eyeglass frames to pick from. The only thing that I think they can do better is wait time. Due to the fact that there is only one Optometrist, I was there for roughly 2 hours from check in to check out and that is a long time considering that the eye exam was a total of 30 minutes and the consultation with the Optician was about 20 minutes so I waited for more that an hour. That’s the difference between 4 and 5 ⭐️ s.

Took my infant here after talking to a office staff and letting her know the issue. Was told to come in doctor definitely wanted to see her. I felt I comfortable from the second i hit the door. Asking a lot of odd questions. No one was there but it took forever for the doctor to come into the office, he seemed unknowledge about infants and blocked tears. Than I was trying to calm the baby so we could leave and he just stood there as if I was going to do something in the office, I mean I was in there alone for 30 mins before you came in. Just a very uncomfortable office. Not saying it's a race thing but seemed like it.

THE REASON I DID NOT RESCHEDULE THE FIRST DAY FOR MY DAUGHTER WAS BECAUSE YOUR STAFF MADE A COMMENT THAT I WAS TOO POOR TO AFFORD THE MISSED APOINTMENT FEE AND THAT MY DAUGHTER WAS COSTING ME TOO MUCH MONEY. IT WAS AT MY SON'S APPOINTMENT THE FOLLOWING DAY THAT YOUR STAFF MEMBER MADE MY 8YO DAUGHTER CRY. REPEATING THAT SHE WASN'T BEHAVING (WHEN SHE WAS SITTING CALMLY) AND THAT I SHOULD NOT TAKE HER ON THE VACATION WE HAD COMING UP. WHEN PICKING UP MY SON'S GLASSES, THEY HANDED ME AN ENVELOPE, AND AFTER I GOT HOME I DISCOVERED IT WAS THE GIFT CARD. THE GIFT CARD I REPEATEDLY REFUSE TO ACCEPT, AND TOLD THEM I DID NOT WANT. I HAD ASSUMPTED THE ENVELOPE WAS SOMETHING ELSE, RELATED TO MY SON'S APPOINTMENT OR GLASSES, AND IT WAS NOT UNTIL I GOT HOME THAT I DISCOVERED IT WAS THE GIFT CARD, WHICH WAS PROMPTLY THROWN AWAY. THE DOCTOR WAS RUDE OVER THE PHONE, AND I SPECIFIED THAT I WAS NOT UPSET WITH THE WAIT TIME ON THE GLASSES OVER AND OVER AGAIN. CLEARLY HE DID NOT CARE TO LISTEN TO ME WHEN I WAS THERE, NOR OVER THE PHONE, NOR TO ACTUALLY READ MY INITIAL REVIEW. NOTHING WAS INACCURATE IN MY ORIGINAL REVIEW. I'M TIRED OF HOW EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL THIS OFFICE HAVE BEEN, OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I was bribed by the doctor to change my review. He called the day after I left this review, and offered a gift card for me to take my kids out for ice cream. I refused, but he kept asking and trying to pressure to change my review. He would not listen as I refused to change my review and eventually I had to hang up on him because he would not let me end the call civilly There are 5 people working here each time I have been in. There is one OD, 2 light haired and 2 dark haired ladies working. The Doctor does what he needs to do and is efficient, I have had no issue with him. The two ladies with the lighter hair who work here are nice, and pleasant to talk to, but I rarely saw one of them, the other seems to be the one who handles all of the call and all of the people who walk in the door. Neither of the ladies with darker hair were nice, nor pleasant to deal with. They both acted like they had better things to do than deal with the patients. They were curt, and relatively rude with me and my children. Maybe I should have asked how they dealt with kids in this office, but I did specify I was bringing in an 8 and 9 year old, and was not told it would be an issue. It did, however, seem to be a serious issue with both of the ladies who hard darker hair. They remained composed, but were visibly irritated and agitated by children, and my children are well behaved. No information was offered upfront, I had to specifically ask how long it would take for the glasses to come in, and I had to repeatedly ask for a copy of my son's glasses prescription before it was begrudgingly given to me. They said the glasses can take 4-6 weeks, and that is a reasonable amount of time to wait, so I will not complain there. I will not be coming back here for my children, or even myself, again. I felt rushed and disrespected. Once I pick up my son's glasses, I will not be contacting this office again.

He was very patient when he examined my mom who had Alzheimer's Dementia. The staff is excellent and always very helpful in person or on the phone. They have a great selection of frames. Had a pair of very expensive designer sunglasses that were ran over and crushed under a car tire a few weeks ago. These sunglasses were never going to look the same again and I was moments away from throwing them out. BUT, leave it to Bear Eye to quickly take on the challenge, fix them up, replaces the lenses, and somehow make them look better than brand new! Such a great place to go! The staff is AMAZING and Dr. MacKewiz is definitely one of the best eye doctors that I’ve been too! I went to a Lenscrafter years ago and never got the perfect vision that I have now after switching to his practice. I have also tried an MD/OD office and still my eye prescription was never right. I have a large amount of astigmatism and when I tried to tell the previous eye doctors that, they didn’t want to listen to me and gave me less which caused me to get headaches after wearing my glasses for a few hours. Dr. MacKewiz listened and understood my concerns the first time and was able to help fix my prescription after my first eye exam. The opticians are so helpful in picking out the perfect pair of glasses and give their honest opinions when choosing between frames. They have a large frame selection and were willing to work with me to get a pair that they didn’t have in stock. Overall, the office is very clean and professional. The staff there are all very friendly and know your name when you walk through the doors. They really do try to get to know their patients and build a relationship with you over time. I’m so glad I switched to this practice and definitely encourage others to make an appointment with Dr. MacKewiz.

I absolutely love coming here! A few things make this office the best! *Everyone who works in the office always has a smile and offers help. Each person really shows pride in what they do and happiness for being at work. Dr. MacKewiz comes in shortly after you are taken back. He listens to any questions or concerns that I may have. The visit is always as efficient as possible. *The office is so nice! It is clean and it smells nice. When you walk in, you can tell that they take pride in the presentation of the office. Terrible experience from start to finish. I arrived 15 minutes early to my appointment. I was seen 45 minutes after my scheduled appointment because the desk staff was not aware that I was there for an appointment, even after I told her I had an appointment and she asked me to sign in. They made me feel like it was my fault for their oversight and I could hear them talking about me behind the desk ("I didn't know she had signed in. Why didn't she say anything."). When I finally saw the doctor he was cold, condescending, and rude. He seemed like he was in a rush. When doing the "1 or 2, 2 or 3" part of the exam if I told him they looked about the same, he would tell me "Well they aren't. Which is better". Once I told him that 2 looked better than 3 and he said "No, it doesn't. They're the same". He made it feel like a quiz. Like I was supposed to be meeting his standards. He left the room in the middle of my exam twice to take calls. At the end of the exam when he put my new prescription in from of me and had me close each eye and read the letters I saw nothing, just white, with my left eye. He told me to just give it my best guess. I explained again that I couldn't see anything except a white screen and after going back and forth a few more times, he told me I was wrong. This is my prescription. After a moment of frustration he resigned to "start over". I was so upset and tense I was holding back tears of frustration. He asks questions about eye health, clearly not caring about the answer. He just wants to up-sell patients by encouraging extra tests, prescription sunglasses, and getting products that aren't fully covered or aren't covered at all by insurance. His assistant made me feel uncomfortable by discussing what she considered to be my poor insurance coverage. Their frames are expensive and they don't have a wide selection. When I was choosing frames the staff member was rushing me. At this point I was upset, frustrated, and I just wanted to get out of there. I wound up quickly choosing a pair of frames that I don't really like. Upon receiving my glasses I feel like my new lenses are over-corrected. I will not be returning, nor will I recommend anyone to this office. I will go back to my previous optometrist, whom I love, even though it is not covered by my insurance. It's worth the money.

Used to love this office but it seems this Optimetrist and his staff are weird and senile... BEWARE! I’d purchased my mother a pair of Gucci eye glasses a few years ago. As time went by the glasses started to wear so she called this office back to see how she can go about bringing them back in for repair. She was immediately scolded by the assistant who told her she couldn’t. The glasses had been stolen. Well, I know that to be a lie for a fact since I’m the one that paid for the glasses using my debit card. So we went back and forth with them and it came to the point where it wasn’t about the glasses as much as it was about the accusation and insult to my mother’s integrity. Even after offering to show them the paid transaction through my checking account and they declined. So now my mother and I is wondering if maybe someone in the office had taken the money for their own use or if the glasses were counterfeit. For one, in order to even receive your glasses from them u have to sign for them and they personally hand them to you. But I mean, if they were certain my mother had stolen a pair of $500+ glasses- why hadn’t they contacted law enforcement? $500 is a felony in Delaware. So we contacted BBB and months after going back and forth with them without any resolution, they decided to speak with us respectfully. They apologized and told my mother to bring the glasses in for repair. She did. Years later, I go back for an exam thinking everything was resolved and was told that because of an incident with a family member in the past- their policy is not to do business with me. Fine. The assistant kept apologizing saying she was sorry. I let her know there was no reason to be sorry- I have VERY good insurance benefits (Aetna) through my employer, Bank of America and my money can spend with ANY optometrist. I don’t need to bring my money and business to an office full of weirdos.

I used to love this office, eyeglasses, until one day the hubby and I went back for new glasses. The doctor must have been in a bad mood. During both eye exams he was very rude and yelled at me and my husband. His staff was running and jumping around, he had his own staff on pins and needles. I will never go back to this horrible place again, if you are driving down route 40 and see their office, step on the gas and keep going. You will be glad you did. If you decide to use this office you will see after a couple of visits, you made a horrible mistake.Nevertheless, they were very good changing the prices.Also I was going through chemo at the time and had hair loss and appear weak. I have been going to Bear Eye Associates for years and absolutely would not go anywhere else. Dr. MacKewiz and his staff are a great team, they are always very nice and professional. Scheduling an appointment with their online tool is very easy. The showcases are beautiful and the selection of glasses is probably the best in Delaware. First off, outstanding experience! Made a emergency appointment and was luckily seen the same day within a few hours. Staff was AMAZING, very courteous a kind. Dr. MacKewiz is an remarkable eye doctor that gave me the proper eye care that I badly needed. He genuinely cares for his patients and their eyes which makes me want to keep my business throughout my lifetime with him and his practice. I will HIGHLY recommend him and his practice to friends and family in the future. Glasses came very quickly and my contacts were next day arrival. I wish I could give this review ten stars, he is THAT GOOD!
