REVIEWS OF Mountain View Eye Center IN Alaska

Brandon Hassett

Had an emergency visit to MVMC, following a rogue branch to the eye snowmachining. Dr. Reinschmidt was super knowledgeable, personable, and efficient through the whole process. I felt exceedingly comfortable (despite the abrasion) and would recommend Dr. R to friends and family.

naomi johnson

Great service at every moment. Front desk, the assistants and the doctor. Very informative and helped me with my insurance questions. 100% would recommend

John Miller

Jeff Castlr

Very unsatisfied with my service here I got a bill for a grand for nothing really being done but to whiteness the un-coordination amongst everyone at eye Catarax place. Yes nice people but waited forever wasted a lot of my time, not only that but time from my job. I probably won't go back after how I felt I was treated. Yes I understand I'm paying for eye tests but to tell me that I was game for surgery then call me in for a second appointment to get charged the whole day again for eye test then at end of day drop me after everyone all day built me up. Maybe this is only an establishment for older people who will take the grief and wait times.

Hans Kohler

Only reason for a 4 star is because of wait time. optometrists was almost a hour past my appointment time.

Brad Carr

Callie N

I received an eye exam here. They were very thorough and professional.

Linds Webb

I have had the best of care before and after surgery. They are taking good care of my eyes and follow ups until they are satisfied with what are doing.

I've been receiving care at Mountain View Medical Center since it opened. Dr. Johnson's thorough exam identified an eye condition that had been missed by previous eye care providers. While her credentials are very impressive, what matters is the delivery. She and her staff are thoroughly professional and highly competent. The atmosphere of the office is friendly and caring. I am so grateful to have such capable eye care.

Lea Castro

Terrible experience. Made us wait for 4hrs. Can't acomode wheelchair. Rude MD.

Martha C Gonzalez

I was in terrible pain in my right eye. Doctor Johnson Katherine came in on a Sunday to take care of me. This is the type of selfless service every Doctor should have. Dedication to patients needs. She came in from her busy Sunday schedule to provide me with the best service I have seen. She took care of me and was very caring and explained all steps as they were happening. Thank you very much for caring. Martha Gonzalez

They wasted my time and tried to overcharge me. Be cautious if you are self-pay. It's a rip-off. I called and made an appointment for an eye exam so I could get my yearly contact prescription. I told them I was self-pay over the phone and was quoted the price of $180. I take time off work and arrive to be told (with a smile) the rate went up by $50 the day before my appointment. No offer is made to provide me the quoted rate. I have to explain I will cancel and then I had to get special permission from someone in the back to get my quoted rate. The rate should have been honored just as my appointment without question. That is the first issue. Then I am told by this same receptionist I will HAVE TO get my eyes dialated. I said no, I just want to renew my contact prescription and return to work. I am told by her three times, You Will get your eyes dialated. This is not true- the customer has a right to chose and I have my eyes checked every year. This is just rude. I am FINALLY told that I will be charged another sum (to-be-determined by the doctor, maybe $100 or $150 or not) to get my contact prescription. I am required to get a contact fitting even though I've been wearing the same contacts for years and years. Add to this the fact that she won't even tell me how much they intend to charge me for what is an annual, routine exam. I finally tell her that for a price that could (or could not) exceed $300-$350 that I will be cancelling. The snotty "have a nice day" follows. An apology for wasting my time would have been nice or anything genuine. We all know what I'm talking about. Grrr. I have Never been treated this way. I have never had an issue getting an exam as well as a quote and I have been getting exams for years. It was rude and I left without an exam and lost time away from work. This could have all been avoided had they been honest with me on the phone when I made the appointment. I will not visit this clinic again, with or without insurance. I would like a little consideration and when someone is paying out-of-pocket, you should have the courtesy to provide a quote to them for services, especially when they are standing in front of you. Have some respect when people are spending a great deal of money and don't treat them like an inconvenience.

5 years ago, completely unexpectedly, I ended up in a medical eye situation.. that actually still continues. Through it all, Dr.Johnson (who is brilliant) and her colleagues (most recently Dr."C") have been professional, caring, compassionate, educational, and patient. I trust them.

Aside from the doctors and the receptionist who were great, the BILLING Department is HORRIBLE! I have had NOTHING but PROBLEMS from them, they never answer there phone, nor do they return my calls more than half the time. I have fought with them for OVER A YEAR regarding a refund... it's unreal. That experience was my FIRST AND LAST, I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO MOUNTAINVEIW AGAIN! There office is an absolute JOKE!

Sue Ann Miller

doctors and nurses are exceptional, but i wonder how many people get turned off by that russian front desk girl, she is very rude!

robyn smith

Everyone from the minute you walk in,to the time you leave are so nice and helpful. It was even the best experience I have had selecting my eye glasses. I have recommended that people I know go here. Thank you so much.

Terrible experience and will never go back or recommend anyone. Was recommended that I go there at the end of December 2014 for a possibly dangerous growth in my eye and the doctor did not seem to care. She did not think it was dangerous but she wanted me to spend lots of money on tests and an MRI so she could see what it was since she did not know. I learned more from googling about it than I did from going to visit her. They said they would sign me up for an MRI at the hospital but refused to do it before the end of the year which meant that my insurance would restart and I would have had to pay out of pocket. I reluctantly agreed to the MRI and they said they would call me back and tell me when it was scheduled for. In January late one night I got a call from the hospital about my MRI the next morning! Mountain View never called me back, I never received instructions for the procedure and basically I did not hear from them again. I cancelled the MRI the morning of because I did not have a heads up and the hospital called me after their office was already closed. I called Mountain View to cancel my follow up appointment. Since then I scheduled an appointment with Eye Clinic of Fairbanks and had wonderful service! I went in and all the tests were fast and simple and the staff was so nice. The doctor was in my room probably a total of 2 minutes and told me it was nothing to worry about, he had seen it before and to come back if it got worse or caused me pain. TWO MINUTES! and he was able to do what Dr. Johnson's office couldn't do in 3 hours, an attempted MRI, $300+ dollars worth of bad pictures taken by a young nursing assistant plus lots of poking, prodding, numbing and a lack of care for how uncomfortable it felt! And I received a call today 4 months later asking why I cancelled that follow up appointment in JANUARY and asking if I wanted to reschedule. Do not waste your time or money going to Mountain View Medical Center, since then I have heard many stories of them wasting peoples time and money. Eye Clinic of Fairbanks was wonderful and so nice.

I was quickly diagnosed with narrow angle glaucoma and had a LPI (laser peripheral iridotomy) first on my right eye, then my left. Dr. Katherine Johnson diagnosed me in 2-minutes, then 10-minutes later, the LPI was complete and she was walking out the door. She explained nothing. Soon after the right eye procedure, I developed halos (beams of light across the center of my eye). When I returned for the left eye, I mentioned this to her and how my vision was affected. She said it was odd, not the result of the procedure and by any means, should not interfere with my vision. A beam of light, across the middle of my eye shouldn't interfere with my vision? This made it obvious she wasn't listening to me, nor did she care about my permanently altered vision. Upon going to another clinic for a 2nd opinion, I now know that 5% of patients are at risk of this happening. I was never debriefed of the possible side effects by Dr. Johnson before the procedures. She made zero effort to comfort me with the possibility of the beams fading in 5-6 months, as my new eye doctor informed me. I stupidly had her preform my 2nd LPI. 3-days later I saw bright flashing lights, blurred vision, floaters and then got a severe headache. These were all warnings listed on the take home sheet reading "contact your doctor immediately if you have any of these symptoms". This happened at 10 pm. I called the number and the emergency number that was listed in the recording for after-hour care was wrong. I called and listened to the recording 4 times, thinking I had written it down wrong. My mother called 3 times. The hotline number given was incorrect. The bright lights faded and after calling the ER I decided to wait to be seen by 'my' doctor. The following afternoon I went into the clinic and the Dr. Johnson was out of state. The doctor sent out to talk to me, Dr. Amestoy, tried dismissing what had occurred the night prior was just an auroral migraine--I'm 33 years old and have never had a migraine in my life. And migraines don't run in the family. Had I not been persistent about being seen because my fear of losing my eye sight, Dr. Amestoy initially refused to see me because it was late in the day and they were closing. He begrudgingly examined my eyes. Since then I've had floaters, bright flashing lights, migraines and permanent halos in my eyes. Dr. Johnson & Dr. Amestoy of Mountain View told me these were all coincidental and had no relation to my procedures. Needless to say, I've gotten a 2nd opinion and have figured out that the surgeries were the cause. The good news: my eyes might adjust overtime to ignore the halos/floaters, the migraine hopefully was a one time occurrence triggered by the prescribed steroidal drops/recent LPI/susceptibility to migraines/stress; and lastly, my eyes currently aren't at risk of vision loss. This is a huge relief, which was not given to me by the Mountain View doctors, whom, for whatever reason, felt it necessary to tell me the visual disturbances had nothing to do with the LPI's. Dr. Johnson has terrible bedside manner and brings her personal problems to the office. I over heard her say a couple of non-professional comments in the hallway when she thought no one was listening. I could never recommend this doctor nor clinic. I was sad to discover how emotionless and unsympathetic Dr. Johnson was, because I chose her because she was a successful female doctor.

Went here for an appointment for myself and my son. Had the appointment scheduled for a month only to show up and find out we couldn’t be seen because they switched their doctors last minute and the only doctor they had in today was an Air Force Doctor that couldn’t see us due to us having tricare medical insurance. They claimed to have called me 2 times yesterday, but I never had any calls or messages. They didn’t even try to call again the morning of my appointment to verify.

My recent experiences with Dr. Scott Amestoy, the front office staff and Gina in optician services have been excellent! They are all very personable, professional and provide outstanding customer-centered care. I was very pleased they recently handled a special request with immediate attention and follow-through. As a former Alaskan medical provider (RN manager), I expect informed, collaborative planning for my vision issues with evidence-based clinical practice. Mountain View MC is one of the finest in my experience, and I highly recommend them.

I moved to Fairbanks in 2011 and had been taking shots in my right eye for wet macular degeneration. I first went to the Eye Clinic of Fairbanks and I specifically asked if there was an eye doctor in Fairbanks that can administer the shots. I was told I had to go to Anchorage. I did so several times at a cost of $250 or more in travel expenses to get treated each time. Then I heard that Dr. Katherine Johnson at the Mountain View Medical Center could give me the shots. I found out she had been offered a job by the Eye Clinic of Fairbanks, but became a competitor instead, so they knew her qualifications and their lie to me cost me over $1500. After a few shots, Dr. Johnson recommended we try a more expensive medication for my condition since the less expensive one was not completely drying the fluid in my eye. Two shots of the more expensive medication dried me up for many months. Dr. Johnson is the best eye Doctor in Fairbanks and better than the two I went to in Anchorage to get those shots. If you have a serious eye problem you don't have to leave Fairbanks to get the best possible care!!

Dr Katherine Johnson and her staff have been caring for my family for several years. I am a physician and chose Dr Johnson to perform my own surgery. As a Harvard graduate from the finest ophthalmology residency program in the country, her credentials are impeccable. Moreover, she has wonderful "bedside manner" exhibiting professionalism, kindness and sincere compassion for her patients. The Mountain View office staff are enthusiastic, professional and knowledgeable, they have filed my insurance forms seamlessly and accurately. The office location is convenient, spacious, welcoming and includes a full optical shop with a large selection and fast, accurate service. Thank you Dr. Johnson and Staff. Very sincerely grateful, Eric

Terrible customer service, they send me forms to fill for an appointment. I stop by the front desk to drop off forms and they say "they don't take veterans anymore". My question is why did you send me a letter with a date for an appointment and then cancel my appointment. I hope this is not how you treat all veterans. Extremely rude customer service, not even an apology. It is a sad day in America when veterans get treated less than a dog.

I went to the optical shop for new glasses. The staff was very professional and efficient. I will definitely return for another pair in the future.
